Who we are...Iowa Sports Foundation The Iowa Games, a statewide Olympic-style competition, is the most well-known of the Iowa Sports Foundation events. The Iowa Games started as a one-weekend effort in 1987 and now has grown to more than 34,000 participants from all 99 of Iowa’s counties. • • • •

In 2002, the Iowa Sports Foundation Board of Directors saw a need to combat Iowa’s growing obesity problem. Live Healthy Iowa is a fast-growing program which has started many wellness initiatives, including the 10 Week Wellness Challenge. The Live Healthy Iowa initiative is key to ensure Iowa is the healthiest state in the nation. • • • •

The Iowa Sports Foundation is just in its fourth year of building the Adaptive Sports Iowa (ASI) program. Our mission is to provide statewide leadership in the planning, promotion, education and organization of sports and recreational activities for Iowans with physical disabilities. Compared to the Iowa Games and Live Healthy Iowa, the numbers are smaller, but the enthusiasm and energy around the athletes is electric. • • • • •

The Iowa Senior Games were developed to encourage Iowans aged 50+ to continue a health and fitness-oriented lifestyle. Seniors focus is regular exercise but our statewide Olympic-style championship provides a goal and recognition of achievement and effort. • • • •

FOCUS To provide sports and recreation opportunities for all Iowans through Olympic-style festivals, events and programs.
Summer Iowa Games Powered by the Iowa Food & Family Project The 2014 Summer Iowa Games was held over three weekends in July. The Summer Iowa Games hosted 12,683 athletes with 97 of 99 counties represented. The main weekend featured the Athlete Jamboree and Opening Ceremony with the Iowa Food & Family Project Field of Champions, entertainment and Ames native and NBA player, Harrison Barnes, as the keynote. Dekhockey, Kubb and Black Powder Shooting were the new sports contested in 2014, making the total number of sports for this year, 62. Winter Iowa Games Powered by the Iowa Food & Family Project The 2014 Winter Iowa Games had 4,399 athletes from 78 of Iowa’s 99 counties. The majority of events were held in Dubuque and Cedar Rapids. Twelve other Iowa communities played host to Winter Iowa Games competitions including Ackley, Ankeny, Asbury, Cedar Falls, Des Moines, DeWitt, Eldora, Fort Dodge, Harlan, Johnston, Peosta and Story City. Iowa Games Net Fest Basketball, Soccer & Volleyball Iowa Games Net Fest had a combined 1,817 athletes compete in the basketball, soccer and volleyball tournaments. The soccer tournament was held the first weekend in November, followed by the basketball tournament the weekend prior to Thanksgiving and concluded with the volleyball tournament the first weekend in January. Fish Iowa Games In partnership with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the ISF developed Fish Iowa Games as a fun and educational program for kindergarten through high school students. Students learn three different casting techniques and use these techniques in a competition of accuracy. A total of 10,122 kids participated in the 2014 Fish Iowa Games. Iowa Games Hoopin’ At The Dome Hoopin’ At The Dome 3 on 3 outdoor basketball tournament was held in the shadows of the Iowa State Capitol. Partnering with the Des Moines Parks & Recreation, the tournament hosted 416 athletes. Iowa Games Mud Run Presented by the University of Iowa The 2014 Iowa Games Mud Run was held at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines. This 3 mile trail run, 1 mile fun run and Little Muddy Buddy run had 1,516 runners. Iowa Games Golf Classic Presented by Mediacom The annual Iowa Games Golf Classic was held at The Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City. Sponsors, board of directors and supporters of the ISF made up the 22 four-person teams. Glow Run 5K Partnering with the Kansas City Running Club for the second straight year, the Iowa Games assisted with hosting the Glow Run 5K in April. Starting and finishing at the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines, 3,362 participated in the evening event. Cycle Iowa 2014 was the inaugural year for Cycle Iowa. Annually, Cycle Iowa will offer a series of bicycling tour rides throughout Iowa. The first event was the Northeast Iowa Cycling Experience (aka the N.I.C.E. Ride). The NICE Ride was held September 20th and 21st in Decorah, Iowa. Each day cyclists rode different routes with a long and short route option. Riders started and finished each day at the Winneshiek County Fair Grounds.
FOCUS To provide health and wellness opportunities to educate and motivate all Iowans to live a healthy lifestyle.
ADULT CHALLENGES 10 Week Wellness Challenge The 10 Week Wellness Challenge is a simple and affordable challenge encouraging Iowans to make healthy choices. Over the 10 weeks, teams of 2-10 people, compete in friendly competition, tracking activity minutes and/or weight loss through the Live Healthy Iowa website. The 28,016 participants received a T-shirt, weekly motivational tips, unlimited access to online healthy resources, and opportunities to win incentives and prizes. Strut Your Pup Challenge Live Healthy Iowa offered a unique way for canine owners to walk, run or play regularly with their pets. In the third year of the program, 485 participants tracked their activity minutes for six-weeks with their four legged friend. Live Healthy Iowa 5K The Live Healthy Iowa 5K was held on April 12, 2014 at 10 locations around the state. The inaugural event had 1,828 runners, joggers and walkers participating as a celebration to the end of the 10 Week Wellness Challenge. All participants received a finisher medal with the top two in each age group receiving an award. The 10 locations included: Atlantic, Bondurant, Britt, Carroll, Fort Dodge, Grundy Center, Hiawatha, Mount Ayr, Storm Lake and Waukon. The runs benefited local wellness coalitions and Adaptive Sports Iowa’s Outreach. Burst Your Thirst Challenge Burst Your Thirst Challenge is a six week effort to promote healthy hydration and physical activity to Iowa adults. Teams of 2-10 earned points by reporting water intake and physical activity minutes on a weekly basis. 2014 featured 2,803 participants. Participants received Live Healthy Iowa water bottles to help track water consumption. The Next Step Challenge In 2014, 4,349 Iowans participated in The Next Step (TNS). TNS is a fall challenge to keep Iowans moving as the weather changes. Participants tracked the number of ‘steps’ each week of the six-week challenge. Participants received a pedometer, weekly motivational tips, as well as, opportunities for incentives and prizes. YOUTH CHALLENGES 10 Week Wellness Challenge In 2014, 30,530 kids participated in the 10 Week Wellness Challenge. The program is designed to encourage young Iowans to increase their physical activity levels and make better food choices. Teams of 5-30 youth, from grades kindergarten through twelfth, track minutes of activity, as well as, fruits, vegetables, milk and water intake and screen time. Fall Fitness Day & Go The Distance Day On October 9, 2013, a record number 126,075 kids participated in Fall Fitness Day (FFD) while on May 2, 2014 a 47,108 kids participated in Go the Distance Day (GTDD). Both FFD and GTDD are one-day events in which schools are asked to have the entire enrollment perform 30 minutes of aerobic activity. These events bring awareness to the importance of daily activity in a healthy lifestyle. Exercising Your Character As part of Go The Distance Day, the Iowa Sports Foundation, Hy-Vee and Character Counts! brought over 7,000 fourth and fifth grade students from central Iowa to Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines for the Exercising Your Character event. Olympic athletes talked with the students about the importance of exercise, eating healthy and how to practice the Six Pillars of Character Counts! Speakers included Iowa football coach, Kirk Ferentz, Iowa State football coach, Paul Rhoads, Olympic triathlete, Hunter Kemper and former Major League Baseball player, Casey Blake.

Wheelchair Basketball ASI sponsors pickup basketball games every Thursday evening in Ankeny. ASI provides 12 sport chairs on-site for athletes to use. Games are non-officiated and casual. The goal is to have fun and experience the sport. ASI All Star Youth Sports Club The ASI All Star Youth Sports Club is designed for our younger athletes. This safe, supervised, and coordinated program is intended to serve more as a physical education activity time. Activities include tag, dodge ball, basketball, boccia and other playground type games. Beep Baseball Established in 2012 as a result of hosting the World Series of Beep Baseball in 2012; the Iowa Reapers are a competitive team representing our state. Beep Baseball is an adapted version of baseball for the blind and vision impaired athlete. The season is comprised of a number of charity events in which the Reapers take on local businesses and groups. Power Soccer Power soccer is a sport for those who use a power chair. By attaching a guard to the front of a power chair, the athletes are able to push, pass, and defend a 14” diameter soccer ball. Games are played most Tuesday nights at the Valley Community Center in West Des Moines. RAGBRAI Team In 2011 ASI established the first team supporting cyclists with physical disabilities. The 2014 ASI RAGBRAI team was comprised of approximately 60 people including volunteers, support crew, and cyclists to take on the seven-day, 431 mile trek across Iowa. After four successful years, the ASI team has become a part of the RAGBRAI culture and the Adaptive Sports Iowa brand is recognized amongst the thousands who take part in this event. Winter Ski Experience In collaboration with our counterparts at Adaptive Adventures from Chicago, ASI offered a snow skiing event for the second consecutive year at Seven Oaks Recreation near Boone. This three day event presented opportunities for both local instructors to learn the adaptive equipment, as well as, physically disabled participants to experience the sport. ASI served over 42 athletes with disabilities at this event. Goalball Weekly during the winter, ASI offered the popular Paralympic sport of Goalball for the blind and visually impaired populations. In this sport, two teams of three players try to score on each other’s goals by rolling a ball on the ground. National Goalball Championships In 2014, the City of Ames and Adaptive Sports Iowa hosted the National Goalball Championships. Over 370 athletes from around the country participated in three day event. Corn Belt Regional Track Classic This year’s event was hosted at Waukee High School stadium. This event serves as a regional qualifying event for the National Junior Disability Championships. National Junior Disability Championshihps The City of Ames, Iowa State University and Adaptive Sports Iowa hosted the 2014 National Junior Disability Championships, July 5-12, 2014. Over 1,100 athletes, representing 24 states participated in the event. Sports included: archery, boccia, power lifting, swimming, table tennis, track and field, as well as a hand cycling exhibition. Bowling Each Tuesday of the month, ASI athletes and families are welcome to bowl at Warrior Lanes in Waukee. Ramps are provided for those unable to handle the balls in a traditional manner. Community Education Events Throughout the year ASI took part in community education and awareness events in an effort to recruit new athletes, expand public awareness of our mission and represent the physically disabled community effectively. Such events include the Iowa State Fair, SCIA Adaptive Sports Clinic, Iowa Bicycle Summit & Expo and school assemblies. These events allow for ASI athletes to engage the public in a unique and meaningful way.

The Addition of the Iowa Senior Games In 2014, the Iowa Senior Olympics joined with the Iowa Sports Foundation and is changing the name to the Iowa Senior Games. The Iowa Senior Games is a multi-sport festival that offers competition for those 50 and over. For 27 years the event had successfully been hosted in West Des Moines, and that will continue in the coming years. Matt Beatty was hired in December 2013 to serve as the Iowa Senior Games director. Beatty came to the ISF from the Muscatine Parks and Recreation where he served as a program supervisor. With Beatty’s background in sports and recreation programming, Bourke considers him a perfect fit. The Iowa Senior Olympics board contributed $44,500 for future use towards the Iowa Senior Games. The ISF plans to increase the number of sports offered for seniors, as well as offer regional competitions around the state of Iowa. Summer Iowa Senior Games The 2014 Iowa Senior Games were held primarly June 12-15 in West Des Moines. This year’s event saw record participation with 915 athletes in 29 sports and skill contests with nearly 100 events. Athletes from 73 Iowa counties and 23 states competed. The 2014 Iowa Senior Games served as a qualifier for the National Senior Games which will be held in Minneapolis in 2015. Four hundred ninety-one Iowans qualified for the 2015 National Senior Games. Pickleball Challenge This event was co-hosted with the Des Moines Riverfront (downtown) YMCA with the intent to provide exposure for Pickleball and the Iowa Senior Games. For this event only, anyone age 45 or older were allowed to compete. The one day tournament had 37 participants.

Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship In honor of former ISU basketball player Brian Pearson, who died of brain cancer in 1997, the Iowa Games began awarding the Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship in 1998. Each year, the Iowa Games awards a $1,000 scholarship to one female and one male who exemplify the spirit of Brian Pearson. The 2014 Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship winners were Nate Van Veldhuizen of Oskaloosa and Bridget Concannon of Story City. Marty McHone Iowa Games Athlete of the Year In 2003, the Iowa Games Athlete of the Year award was renamed after Marty McHone who was the 1996 Iowa Games Female Athlete of the Year and had competed in the Iowa Games track meet for 16 years. The award annually is given to two Iowa Games athletes who best exemplify the qualities of outstanding integrity, citizenship and athletic achievement. The 2014 Marty McHone Athletes of the Year were Natalie Whitcher of Ankeny and Tanner Weitzel of Boone. Sean Runyan Adaptive Sports Iowa Athlete of the Year Named in memory of Sean Runyan, a Central Iowa wheelchair athlete who was the first in the nation to compete in a sanctioned high school athletic event. The 2014 Sean Runyan Adaptive Sports Iowa Athlete of the year was Stan Boyer of Waukee. Caring Coach Award The Caring Coach Award is designed to recognize coaches who have made significant and positive influences on the actions and development of their players. Anyone who has coached a youth team sport in the Iowa Games and has had a positive impact on young people may be nominated for the award. The 2014 Iowa Games Caring Coach was Ray Dentlinger, trapshooting coach from Storm Lake. Iowa Games Official of the Year The Iowa Games relies heavily on its volunteers, which includes its volunteer officials. In most cases, a volunteer official receives a T-shirt, lunch and an occasional sign of gratitude from an athlete or spectator. Many of our volunteers officiate all day long with no expectations of recognition or reimbursement. The 2014 Summer Iowa Games Official of the Year was Dennis Jones of Ames. The 2014 Winter Iowa Games Official of the Year was Karl Schaper of Nora Springs. Iowa Games Volunteer of the Year This award was designed to reward our volunteers and give them the praise and recognition they deserve for effortlessly giving their time and talents year after year. For many of our volunteers, it is the feeling of accomplishment, sharing in others’ success or just having fun that keeps them returning. The 2014 Iowa Games Volunteer of the Year was Cliff Pence of Ames. The 2014 Winter Iowa Games Volunteer of was Sumei Xiong, Ames. Character Counts! Coach of the Year The Character Counts! Coach of the Year award, sponsored by the Institute of Character Development and the Iowa Games, is awarded to a coach who displays great character traits in the school and community. The award is presented by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) at the girls state basketball tournament brunch and the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA} at the boy’s state basketball tournament. The 2014 IHSAA recipient was Warren Haacke of Riceville. The 2014 IGHSAU recipient was Gary Richardson of MOC-Floyd Valley.
