Tornado Wash

U.S. Bancorp, the parent company of U.S. Bank, was founded in 1863. U.S. Bank was honored as one of the Best Banks in America in Money Time magazine in October 2012. It also has been awarded the Most Admired Super Regional Bank four years in a row by Fortune magazine.

Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened their first store in Beaconsfield, Iowa, in 1930. Their goal was to provide “good merchandise, appreciative service and low prices.” The two men began calling their store the Hyde & Vredenburg in 1933, but in 1938 it became Hyde & Vredenburg Inc. after their store began to expand. Their first president was Dwight Vredenburg, son of David Vredenburg.

Tornado Wash located on Duff Avenue connected to Jiffy Lube, is a great choice if you are looking to make your car shine like new. Tornado Wash is a local Ames business and its washes are affordable for college students with prices ranging from $4 to $12. To make sure each car gets a great cleaning, Tornado Wash has an 80-foot Rocket Conveyor and a FoamBrite material to enhance the quality of each car wash. Students can find a Tornado Wash coupon in the Iowa State coupon book that is handed out each year. Tornado Wash is open early for early birds and late for those looking for a nice evening wash. Hours are from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

With three branches and multiple ATM’s scattered throughout Ames, this bank is one of the most popular among students for their monetary needs. With warm and friendly service, it is easy to see why students choose to bank with U.S. Bank, which has locations on Lincoln Way, Main Street and Grand Avenue. U.S. Bank is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. 1ST RUNNER UP: Wells 2ND RUNNER UP: First

The company is now called Hy-Vee and is the students’ choice for the best grocery store in Ames. With two locations in Ames, this supermarket is where students choose to fill their grocery needs, but groceries aren’t the only thing that can be found at Hy-Vee. Their stores include a pharmacy, a flower shop, a kitchen, a bank, a bakery, a postal drop-off and a Starbucks. With a helpful smile in every aisle, customers can expect the best customer service around. Both locations on Lincoln Way in central Ames and west Ames are open 24 hours, which makes it a great place for students to grab a late-night snack between study sessions or for any last-minute needs.

BEST Consignment Shop

Barefoot Campus Outfitters

The Loft, today’s fashion at an affordable price, located on Main Street in Ames, is a locally owned consignment shop where you can buy trendy clothing that you might not buy at its original price but can now afford. The store originally developed from its sister store, Duck Worth Wearing. Owners Eric and Amy Abrams realized the parents who brought their kids when they were younger now needed a new place to sell their old clothes as they grew up. So the Loft was created to allow young adults to bring in their gently used clothes and make some money.

TBarefoot Campus Outfitters, new to the Ames business family, provides vintage and traditional apparel for Iowa State. Barefoot opened in autumn of 2015 in the same location as the former Campus Bookstore. Owners and brothers Matt and Mitch Copeland originally started the company simply as an internet website. It developed into a sports apparel site, then to what they now call Barefoot Campus Outfitters. They saw a need for campus clothing that wasn’t the same as every other school. They hope to expand and add more stores in the Midwest. They carry many different brands so any fan can find something they love. Barefoot has a variety of apparel from shirts, jackets, sweaters and more for both men and women. They have fun extras to buy such as jewelry and cute cups to drink from at a tailgate. Barefoot works with 11 universities across the country to provide fun and unique styles that support those 11 teams. Iowa State is the only college that Barefoot works with in Iowa so fans won’t see a rival team fan wearing the same shirt, but with their rival’s logo on it. All the employees are Iowa State students, and they offer many opportunities for student organizations to raise money, such as donating 15 percent of sales for the week to a student organization. Barefoot also will help any organization, sorority, fraternity or person design their own individualized clothing. Customers can bring in a design they have created or they can work with the Barefoot designers to help create the perfect shirt. The clothing they chose for Iowa State comes not only in traditional colors of cardinal and gold, but also in many other colors. 1ST RUNNER UP: University 2ND RUNNER UP: Cy’s

The Loft

Several ISU students work at The Loft, but the Abrams’ relationship with the university goes much further than this. Trend Magazine partners with The Loft and uses its clothing in photo sessions for the articles in the magazine. The Loft also advertises through Trend hoping to bring more students there to shop and sell. The store also is involved with the annual Iowa State Fashion Show. Another link to ISU includes all the U.S. and international students from a variety of nations who bring their clothes in to sell and give unique global clothing choices to the store. The Loft only buys seasonally. It is currently buying spring wear. It will start purchasing summer clothes beginning at the end of February. The Loft prefers clothes to be in fashion within the last three years. Selling clothes is simple and takes no more than 10 minutes, but sellers can sell only 25 items at a time. The clothing for sale appeals to men and women, from teens to adults. The Loft’s inventory includes many name brands, such as Gap and Express, at a college-student-friendly price as well as unused Iowa State items. The store also has a selection of formal wear and is always in search of more dresses or tuxes. It is an easy way to make a little extra cash for the clothes students don’t want anymore. 1ST RUNNER UP: Goodwill 2ND RUNNER UP: Miss

BEST Tattoo Parlor

BEST Jeweler

Heroic Ink

Ames Silversmithing

Longtime award-winning tattoo artist duo Mump and Hugo opened the doors of Heroic Ink at 409 Douglas Ave. in 2009. Since then, the shop has enjoyed its title as “Best In Story County” for all five years of its operation. In that time, it has welcomed additional tattoo artists and now employs six full-time artists.

Gary Youngberg was always interested in gems and stones, and while a college student, he taught himself how to create beautiful jewelry. After two years of attending college in Iowa City and in Ames, he decided it wasn’t for him. Instead of continuing his college education, he took $1,500 and opened Ames Silversmithing with his fiancé, now wife, in 1976. The Youngbergs never really had goals for their business; they just enjoy doing what they love and giving back to the community, but they say their ultimate goal is to be happy.

As a “no flash” parlor, Heroic Ink prides itself on the amount of custom tattoo art that it generates for an evergrowing number of serious tattoo collectors looking for the best that the industry has to offer. Customers can bring their own designs to the artists. But they need not fret if they don’t have any tattoo ideas, because clients can book an appointment with artists and discuss desired designs without any extra charges. With a variety of artistic abilities, no style or design is too difficult for the Heroic staff. Heroic Ink also boasts a piercing staff that has been trained to maintain the highest standards using modern techniques combined with a superior jewelry selection of the highest quality materials available. Heroic Ink promises customers a clean, comfortable and family-friendly environment. The artists welcome anyone who walks through the doors without judgment, putting the customer’s experience first. For the passionate artists, it is an honor to be trusted to create a permanent mark on their client’s skin. Heroic Ink’s focus on artistic expression combined with technical ability, leaves its clients feeling confident while enjoying a warm and professional experience. Heroic Ink has received praise for being incredibly clean and using a one-time needle. Heroic Ink is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. It is open from noon until 6 p.m. Sunday and is closed on Mondays. The minimum price

Ames Silversmithing has many designers and a beautiful location in downtown Ames. The Youngbergs have expanded their store four times since it opened. The latest expansion happened in 2005 when they created space for new showcases and interior displays. Their designers help create one-of-a-kind jewelry and perfect it to precisely what the customer wants. They also size and repair damaged jewelry. They have a great relationship with ISU students because they provide quality jewelry for engagement rings for young couples. They do not offer student discounts because they believe value is key. Their high-quality jewelry is already at unbeatable low prices. Ames Silversmithing has been named the best jewelry store in Story County for 13 years in a row. They are open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and on Thursday they are open until 7 p.m.

BEST Bakery Van Hemert’s Dutch Oven Bakery Denny Van Hemert, owner of Van Hemert’s Dutch Oven Bakery, comes from humble roots in Pella, Iowa, where he worked in local Dutch bakeries before and after school. He then moved on to a different bakery job at HyVee until he met his wife, Terri. In 1983, Denny and Terri started their own family-owned bakery in Boone. In 1990, the Van Hemerts expanded by opening a shop in Ames, and they have been offering an endless variety of pastries and baked goods ever since. Van Hemert’s Dutch Oven Bakery has been crowned Story County’s Best Bakery numerous times, as well as receiving awards for their wedding cakes, but that’s not all. They are also famous for smaller pastries, such as the “S” shaped Dutch letters, bagels, pies and more. Today, family-owned bakeries seem to be a thing of the past, and that is what makes the Van Hemerts so special. At 8 p.m. every night, the next day’s items are baked from scratch in the Boone bakery and are delivered by 3:30 a.m. to the Ames store, hospitals, gas stations and Iowa State University. The bakery offers more than just pastries. Dutch Oven Bakery has delicious sandwiches, soups and lattes for students who need a quiet study spot or their daily dose of caffeine. Students also like to bring boxes of these baked goods to their teachers and study groups. West Street Deli

Superdog

With a cult following from ISU students to Ames natives, West Street Deli is known for its specialty sandwiches, made-from-scratch soups and freshly baked breads. Bruce Runner founded West Street Deli in 2000 with his son Jonathan. Runner took out a loan to buy the building and equipment needed to make his vision come to life. Now, Jonathan and his brother Andrew are the owners and operators of this beloved deli.

Open no earlier than 9 p.m. every night of the week, Superdog is a staple in ISU nightlife. Late-night food aficionados can find this beloved hot dog cart on Main Street or across from the Kum & Go on Welch Avenue.

West Street Deli differentiates itself from other delis by cooking its own meat. Even though everything is homemade, the deli is still able to keep its prices low, which makes it inviting to a college student’s budget. To keep its customers on their toes, West Street Deli changes its chili and special sandwiches weekly. The specials are so loved that some customers go to the deli with that specific sandwich in mind, and if it is sold out, then the customer will try again the next day. Another factor that makes West Street Deli so popular is its Make Your Own option. Customers are able to get exactly what they want on their sandwich, which makes it even more accessible to anyone’s diet, no matter whether they are vegan, gluten-free or a picky eater. From 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, customers can stop by in their most casual attire and enjoy one of the deli’s innovative creations. 1ST RUNNER UP: Downtown 2ND RUNNER UP: Depot

A Superdog is an all-beef hot dog with five different sauces, such as pineapple, garlic cilantro, ketchup, mustard and special sauce. That’s not all. On top of the sauces are potato chips, a slice of bacon and Monterrey Jack cheese. The dog is broiled so that the cheese melts before being handed off to the customer. Superdog is so important to the ISU community that not even cold winter nights can stop students from wanting one of these delicious dogs. Chad Watkins, co-owner of Superdog, said the cold is never an issue for the students, but if it is for him, he will layer up because he knows how much his customers love his product. But if it is below 20 degrees before 8 p.m. Monday or Tuesday, the stand is closed. It will open every other day of the week unless it hits below 5 degrees. Music is always playing and people are dancing at the Superdog stand, and Watkins said the best part of owning the Superdog cart is interacting with the students. Watkins tries to be as personable as possible no matter how long of a line he has. Whether he is helping a student light a cigarette or staying open past close so everyone in line can eat, it is obvious how much Watkins cares for his customers. A Superdog isn’t something that can be found just anywhere. People often try to recreate Superdogs at home, but it’s never the same. So come join the line at Superdog, dance to the music and enjoy the most intriguing hot dog in the state. 1ST RUNNER UP: Rico’s Tacos 2ND RUNNER UP: Macubana

Jeff’s Pizza

+39

El Azteca

A pizza staple in Campustown, Jeff’s Pizza serves some of the best pizza and calzones in the Midwest. Founded originally in Wisconsin by Jeff and Chris Uetz, this pizzeria has been an ISU staple since it opened in 2004. With hours lasting until 2 a.m. or 3 a.m., Jeff’s Pizza has become a hotspot for Ames’ nightlife.

Starting in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, Alessandro Andreoni was raised with the passion of cooking and sharing it with others.

For a taste of Ames’ spicier cuisine, students flock to El Azteca, a family owned restaurant that serves some of the best Mexican fare around. With its two locations on Dayton Avenue and Stange Road, the restaurants are easily accessible to students as well as anyone else looking for a place to chow down in Ames. Since its arrival more than a decade ago, this cantina has been serving authentic Mexican dishes like none other with a flare that makes guests feel like family. When entering the restaurant, guests are immediately greeted by one of many friendly waiters or waitresses.

Jeff Uetz himself has worked every position in the pizza business from delivery boy to manager, and he uses this knowledge to make the experience for guests the best it can be. Pizzas hot out of the oven, classic desserts such as Rice Krispie treats and its famous smotherella sticks will make this pizzeria an instant favorite to any who walk in the doors. What makes Jeff’s so popular with students are the weekday specials offered, including buy one, get one free and discounted sides, perfect for a college student’s budget. Single slices are sold in-store Wednesday through Saturday. Jeff’s also takes pride in how active it is with the ISU community, often sponsoring sports and clubs to show that its dedication to the community extends further than the kitchen. 1ST RUNNER UP: Great

Andreoni’s love for food was obvious when he used his grandmother’s recipes to open two restaurants, one in the Alps of Northern Italy and another on the island of Sardegna. Although he was successful with these restaurants for years, Andreoni decided he wanted to share his family’s traditions with a new audience. He traveled across the world to bring the people of Ames quality, authentic Italian cuisine by opening +39 Italian Restaurant, Market & Cantina. Andreoni eventually landed in Ames after a friend described how much the residents craved authentic Italian. He met two brothers from Ames, Brian and Michael Gorman, both of whom loved Italian food and culture. Brian, the head chef, traveled to Italy with Andreoni to work in authentic Italian restaurants and discover what the brothers and Andreoni wanted in their Ames restaurant. As a team, they created a restaurant that transports their customers to Andreoni’s grandmother’s house. Andreoni’s wife, Elisabetta, contributed to +39 Italian Restaurant by compiling a list of quality retail goods to sell in the cantina section of the restaurant. The true essence of Italy can be experienced at +39 Italian Restaurant, Market & Cantina through dishes such as papardelle bolognese or arancini to all of the small details this team perfected. 1ST RUNNER UP: GeAngelo’s 2ND RUNNER UP: Valentino’s

The wait for a table, even during the two cantinas’ busier lunch and dinner rushes, never takes more than 10 to 15 minutes. After being seated, guests are provided chips and salsa, but be careful because customers could easily fill up on those before the meal reaches the table. The selection of classic authentic Mexican dishes ranges from standard fish tacos to chile verde and many others. The food always comes out quickly, fresh and served with a smile. The owners are passionate about giving their customers the best service around and are known to walk around and check up to see how the meal is going. El Azteca was voted the best Mexican restaurant in Story County in 2015 and hope to win it again this year. What sets El Azteca apart from the average late-night burrito cafe in Campustown is that the cantinas pride themselves on treating every guest like family, going above and beyond with their service. They are always happy to see ISU students walk in the door, and one taste of their Chori-pollo, chorizo and chicken with a beautifully decadent cheese sauce, will have you coming back for more. 1ST RUNNER UP: La

For those in Ames who constantly crave high-quality Chinese cuisine, Mandarin Chinese restaurant is the place to be. Located on Lincoln Way, this fine Asian cuisine is never more than a quick CyRide trip away. Winner of Story County’s best Asian restaurant for nine consecutive years, Mandarin serves some of the most authentic tastes of Asia in Ames and ISU community.

India Palace is conveniently located in Campustown at 120 Hayward Ave. Stepping into the cozy, family-owned restaurant, customers are likely to be welcomed by the friendly owner, Gurdeep Banwait, and his wife, Manjit Banwait.

Since 2008, Fuji Japanese Steakhouse has been providing Ames with a delicious taste of Japanese cuisine. It has a convenient location off 16th Street and Duff Avenue. Fuji goes the extra mile to make customers feel like they’re in the heart of Japan. The atmosphere and décor make the experience authentic as well as the hibachi grills and sushi bar. Customers have the choice of more than 40 rolls from the sushi menu, so it’s great for both sushi veterans and those who want to try it for the first time. Fuji has a full bar and offers a two-for-one deal on cocktails on Mondays. Fuji offers sushi and martini night at a special price Tuesdays. Hibachi nights are Wednesdays, when customers can get 50 percent off their second adult hibachi entrée. Fuji also offer special food items and cocktails each month. 1ST RUNNER UP: HyVee 2ND RUNNER UP: Showgun

Open for both lunch and dinner, the choices range from Kung Pao chicken to curry tofu. The restaurant prides itself on being able to accommodate almost any guest that walks in the door, with many vegetarian as well as gluten-free options. Going home with leftovers is not uncommon at Mandarin because it serves big portions at reasonable prices. Its lunch entrées always come with a side of rice, soup and an eggroll. Dinner entrees come in family portions, which is larger than a lunch entrée, with a side of rice. The restaurant is a beautiful display, from dazzling golden ceiling to the oriental wall hangings to the tables themselves. The staff makes it a priority to leave the place spotless from the front door to the silverware. So next time a craving hits for the zestier side of Ames, a quick hop, skip and jump to Mandarin won’t disappoint. 1ST RUNNER UP: The

Before Banwait opened India Palace, he was working in his family’s Indian restaurant in Iowa City. Many ISU professors loved his food and persuaded him to open a restaurant in Ames. In 2005, Banwait finally found his way to Campustown and started offering his delicacies to the Iowa State and Ames community. Banwait takes pride in cooking each dish himself, while his wife helps serve customers. India Palace is known for its homemade naan bread that cannot be found in other stores in Ames. From tandoori chicken to chicken tikka masala to butter chicken, India Palace offers all kinds of traditional Indian food. It promises 100 percent fresh and homemade food to its customers. Gluten-free dishes and vegetarian food are also available across the menu. Catering services also can be provided. India Palace is open Monday through Saturday. A lunch buffet is available from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and costs only $8.99 per person. Buffet selections rotate daily so diners always find something different to try. DG’s Tap House is the premier rock club of Ames. Located on Main Street, DG’s Tap House is known for its microbrews and live music performed four times a week.

AJ’s Ultra Lounge initially opened on Lincoln Way in 2012, but later moved to the corner of Stanton Avenue and Chamberlain Street, owned by the same local business owner who owns AJ’s Liquor.

Mickey’s is popular among students who attend Iowa State, partly because of its location in Campustown, where students congregate when not in class. BEST Administrator at ISU Steven Leath Steven Leath, the fifteenth president of the university, started at Iowa State in the spring of 2012. Leath’s most recent academic position before coming to Iowa State was the vice president for research at the University of North Carolina. With his education in plant pathology and research experience, Leath has been instrumental in the growth of ISU Research Park, including the recent launch of a Phase 3 expansion, which will encompass building an Economic Development Core Facility as part of an initiative to grow Iowa State’s economic development for the state.

Best Student Leader at ISU Dan Breitbarth Student Government President Dan Breitbarth has been working to implement small changes that make a big difference throughout his time at Iowa State. Some of his key initiatives include pedestrian safety, new power outlets at Parks Library, additional seating for students to eat at the Memorial Union, printing credit reform, resources for students with diverse backgrounds and revitalization of spring events. Majoring in business economics and business management, Breitbarth hopes to use his experience at Iowa State in a career in environmental economics or policy reform to help with sustainability issues. He plans to work in the field for a few years before pursuing a master’s or law degree. Breitbarth will remember Iowa State for the right-of-passage traditions such as camping out for basketball games and listening to the Campanile chime as he walks around campus on a nice afternoon.

In 2015, Leath exceeded past fundraising efforts to break the university record with $165 million in raised funds and also increased ISU funding from the state government for the fourth year in a row. During his presidency, Iowa State has faced rapid enrollment growth, presenting new challenges. However, Leath still makes time to interact with students, even going out to parties and bars this past Halloween to ensure that students were making good decisions and to get to know them better. Other elements of Leath’s strategic plan for the university include strengthening ISU’s scholarly reputation and growing the diversity of the students, faculty and staff, which is why he has created the position of a vice president for diversity and inclusion. He belongs to many academic associations and has worked hard to maintain ISU’s membership in the Association of American Universities, an organization for 62 leading research universities.

But more memorable will be all the people he met during his time at Iowa State. He was first involved with the Hall Council when he lived at Willow Hall and served on InterResidence Hall Association, as well as the Business Council, all of which prepared him for Student Government.

Leath and his wife, Janet, have two sons, Eric and Scott, and two dogs, Dixie and Quill, who can often be seen playing in the backyard of the Knoll, where the president and his family lives.

Feb. 22, 2016 | Iowa State Daily STUDENT CHOICE and Janet Harris Squires. The goal was to allow the public to have easier access to art. This year the Octagon will celebrate 50 years of bringing art to the Ames community, which it believes allows for individuality to express yourself.

BEST Arts & Culture Octagon Center for the Arts The Octagon Center for the Arts on Main Street uses art to bring creativity to the people of Ames. It is a nonprofit organization that has been influencing Iowa artists since 1966. The center has received funding from the National Endowment of the Arts, the Iowa Arts Council and a variety of other organizations that fund the arts. The original location was in a century old house in the shape of an octagon, which is how the center got its name. Its new location was formerly a Masonic building built 100 years ago. In 1966, the Octagon Center for the Arts was established by Veronika Ruedenberg, Martha Benson, Priscilla Sage

The Octagon Center for the Arts provides many opportunities for ISU students and faculty. It partners with the College of Design to host an event that allows students to show their work. Some ISU faculty currently serve on the Board of Trustees. Heather Johnson, executive director at the Octagon Center, said they are always looking for volunteers to teach classes and provide internship opportunities. The Octagon Center is hosting an exhibit that is full of artwork from ISU students and faculty. The exhibit is a multimedia show that includes digital art, tapestries, 3D art, ceramics, glass work, graphics and more. The center hosts a major annual event called the Octagon Art Festival.

Assault Care Center Extending Shelter & Support is a non-profit organization serving Story, Marshall, Boone, Tama and Greene counties with a mission to “address the roots and impact of domestic and sexual violence through services that enhance safety, empower survivors, and promote understanding and social justice within our community.” Founded in 1974 with the help of ISU’s Government of the Student Body, the organization has grown from being solely a rape crisis center to offering a 24-hour crisis hotline, a shelter for domestic violence victims and their children and individual counseling and support groups for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. ACCESS believes that domestic and sexual violence are caused by societal imbalances in gender roles, relationships and the distribution of power. They work to create a society stated by their vision as, “a community founded in respect and equality that is free from violence, abuse, and power imbalances” through education, advocacy and individual-specific care for each person that seeks their services. The organization provides legal advocacy for clients and initiates education programs in the community. ACCESS has a donation page on its website with information about how to donate directly to the organization or through the ACCESS endowment. The organization also accepts donations of household items, clothes and cell phones. For more information, check out its website assaultcarecenter.org. BEST Student Organization Dance Marathon One of the best things about college life is the events that unify the students. In Cyclone nation, one of the great unifying events is Dance Marathon. This ongoing philanthropy, started in 1991 at Indiana University, has since spread across the nation to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. This movement is completely student run and has been a part of Iowa State for 18 years. It not only includes its annual 12-hour weekend dance event, but year-round fund-raising events that include tailgates, 4K fun runs and many other special events. All proceeds go to the nearest children’s hospital, which in Iowa State’s case, is the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital in Iowa City. This year, Dance Marathon raised more than $440,000 in donations and pledges. The money goes toward research for multiple types of children’s cancer, cystic fibrosis and heart defects, as well as new technologies and care packages for kids. Dance Marathon is a huge inspiration across America not only for students in high school and college who take part in the event, but also for the families and kids who rely on Dance Marathon for life-saving care and services. Students can get involved in Iowa State Dance Marathon at any time, and donations are always accepted. Registering for Dance Marathon Weekend in January is a breeze. Students can stay involved by attending information sessions and additional fundraisers throughout the year. It’s never too late to get involved in the biggest student organization on campus, and it’s always for the kids. 1ST RUNNER UP: Student 2ND RUNNER UP: Iowa
