With the 1864 program, this photocopy of an article to
the editor in the Home Journal that was in reference to the poem that was read at the commencement ceremony. It was published in the paper, due to the return of the Hundred Day Boys. Col. William Sanford Brooks, started as a private in the
1st Iowa Infantry, and was promoted to the 19th Regiment, Iowa Infantry. He later became the Lieutenant Colonel of the 56th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry and eventually promoted to its Colonel. He died on July 26th, 1864, while commanding his troops. Wesleyan University where she received her Master of Science Degree. She married John A. Broadhead, an attorney at law, in Mt. Pleasant, in June of 1865. Their daughter Carrie May married Henry C. Wallace, who became the Secretary of Agriculture. Mrs. Broadhead died October 12, 1867.
