NURSING CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Human beings are social creatures who live within families and communities, sharing a certain culture, living in a certain historical period and each with their own personality. Each of these factors make us unique, but also part of a greater whole. Throughout our life cycles, we strive to live in a state of harmony with ourselves and with the society that surrounds us, allowing us to consider ourselves as healthy. Nursing professionals, who work within multidisciplinary teams, help individuals find health harmony, and to maintain it, through the care or information they provide to patients, their family or the community. Nursing professionals are guided by the humanistic principle of respecting the values, culture and religion of those they care for. The School of Health nursing course awards graduates with a 4-year academic degree worth 240 credits. Each semester is made up of theoretical curricular units combined with clinical training (practical experience). Students follow a curriculum based on nursing, biomedical, social and behavioural sciences.

54

SPECIAL EDUCATION

SPECIALISING IN COGNITIVE AND MOTOR DEVELOPMENT One of the guiding features that both charges and justifies the study plan of this course is closely correlated with a solution being found to the problem posed by Special Educational Needs and Special Education. This solution is based on a humanist approach, reflecting a historically recent position adopted that rejects the practices of excluding and segregating more vulnerable members of our society, among which are people with disabilities. The educational system is responsible for contributing to the democratisation of society in a variety of dimensions, one of the most relevant of which is ensuring every member of society is guaranteed access to equal opportunities.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES The objectives established for this course have been drawn up based on the specialised training required for special education provided for by Joint Order No. 198/99, of the 15th February, which calls for skills to be developed in four dimensions: critical analysis; intervention; training, supervision and evaluation; consultancy. As such, this course aims to provide future professionals with the type of training that will enable them to: Understand the issue of Special Education and the educational and social inclusion of children/young people with cognitive and/or motor limitations;

88

Apply practical and theoretical knowledge in order to identify, plan, assess and take action with these children/young people; Encourage the social and educational inclusion of these children/young people through collaborative work conducted with their families and other educational agents and agents within the community; Develop a reflective and investigative attitude in their work.

TEACHING METHODOLOGIES Educational research on training processes has long demonstrated the importance of using active methodologies that encourage student involvement and contribute to an individual construction path, which is then supported by mediation and group reflection. The aforementioned processes apply to any level of education, which means they are even more justifiably applied to a Master's degree, which aims to develop multiple skills in students, the most fundamental of which will undoubtedly be those related to a rigorous, well-founded, productive thinking method that grants participants the ability to solve problems, innovate and establish a wide range of relationships between the various elements found in any situation they analyse.

Using dynamic, diversified strategies, this course seeks to encourage permanent critical reection, providing students with a sense of restlessness and curiosity.

As such, it aims to contributing to them developing personal, social and professional approaches guided by rigour, ethics, a sense of responsibility and creativity.

INTERNET OF THINGS The maturation of information technologies, data communication networks (of which the Internet must be noted, in particular) and electronic and computational devices resulted in a convergent process that gave rise to the concept of "Internet of Things (IoT). The definition is clear: "The Internet of Things is the network of physical objects embedded in electronic devices, applications, sensors, actuators and data communication that allows these objects to gather information and carry out their exchange." More specifically, the Internet of Things arises from sensors and electronic devices being associated with all types of objects, communicating with them in order to take advantage of the information collected, using all the cloud resources available, the Internet and mobile devices. Graduates of the Master's in the Internet of Things will be able to create new, innovative solutions to existing problems, working within multidisciplinary teams. OBJECTIVES AND METHODOLOGIES This Master's course aims to train professionals who have not only gained classic knowledge of

106

Computer Engineering (programming, databases, Internet, operating systems, communication networks, mobile communications) but also the knowledge required to create and programme software-hardware systems and their integration and communication. The graduates will be engineering professionals trained to work with specialists in different fields relating to a specific problem, who are able to build computer systems using hardware and software components applicable to different areas, including health and well-being, education, agriculture and tourism, smart homes and smart cities. As such, they will be able to apply a specific set of specialised computer knowledge, learned from a high-growth area, to problems in areas of local, regional, national and international relevance. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Software Engineer; System Engineer; development of systems for the Internet of Things in several areas including Home Automation, Health, Industry, Agriculture, Education and Tourism.
