La Scuola d'Italia

Our Mission La Scuola d’Italia Guglielmo Marconi (La Scuola) is an independent, American educational institution based in New York. The mission of the school is a) to provide an outstanding bi-lingual, classical educational experience firmly rooted in the best Italian /European and American traditions for internationally oriented studies, and b) to award degrees to students who satisfy its rigorous academic requirements. La Scuola affirms the importance of the Western canon and its historic, literary and philosophical continuum, one of whose leading incubators, since Roman times, has been Italy. Academic programs shall be designed to use to the fullest extent the special resources of a highly skilled multi-cultural faculty, an international student body and the extraordinarily rich culture and history of Italy, the United States and New York City. Cultivating students’ minds, supplying them with a substantial fund of knowledge, and providing them with the basis for making sound ethical judgments remain the foundations of the school’s mission and philosophy. La Scuola pledges:

• To educate the whole human being, in a healthy and balanced manner; • To espouse a fundamental commitment to high academic achievement • • • • • • • • • • •

and the development of socialresponsibility; To provide a broad spectrum of enrichment activities which draws on the inherent talents of the international student body; To develop courses, seminars, and other programs that instill an eagerness to embrace the challenges of a more global future; To develop in its charges the skills and the learning habits that will make it possible for students to advance in their educational careers and beyond with maximum preparedness; To produce graduates who are sought after by the top American and international colleges and universities; To create an academic community that fosters intellectual pursuit freely and openly; To emphasize virtue, as in the classical Greek understanding of arête, as the goal of life’s and education’s undertakings; To work in partnership with parents in an atmosphere of mutual respect, trust, and open communication; To provide a physical environment that invites teaching and learning and that encourages excellence in both faculty and students; To promote and support a sound financial environment; To engage the international community in New York and in Europe to support La Scuola; To conduct its affairs with the utmost ethical and moral probity.

“Yesterday there wasn’t, today there is...” La Scuola’s new reality is visionary. From our stunningly capacious new facility to the advances in curriculum and instruction, we are reaching upward in every area of our endeavor – all, for the growing number of children in our charge. They are so beautiful and precious and so open to learning that we owe them a future built upon sound educational principles and instruction. This Annual Report presents a snapshot of the ways in which we make this work, from staff and faculty to the all important contributors who give of their resources to La Scuola so generously. Without this added financial boost, our vision would be limited and constrained rather than being ambitious and broadly forward looking. May we thank all of the contributors to our dream for an academically superior, competitively outstanding school and in the same breath call upon the entire La Scuola d’Italia community to contribute meaningfully to this most important enterprise. Through your generosity, we may say “Yesterday there wasn’t, today there is…..and tomorrow there will be" a bright beacon of Italian education and culture in New York, La Scuola d’Italia. Thank you, Board of Trustees La Scuola d’Italia

Comm. Stefano Acunto Chairman

From THe COO... Dear Members of La Scuola Community, La Scuola d’Italia is undergoing an amazing transformation from a quaint Upper East Side school to an International multilingual and multicultural educational and cultural institution. Our new facility will open in September 2016 and will feature brand new state of the art physical spaces, including: • State of the art 600+ square feet classrooms for a maximum of 18 students per classroom • General science laboratory • Specialty science laboratory • Gym/Auditorium • 200+ seat theater-style auditorium • Culinary arts center including a cafeteria and an espresso bar • Rooftop farm • 4 outdoor spaces • 2 libraries and computer labs • State of the art fiber optics internet access and building-wide wireless connectivity • Military grade security systems At La Scuola, we are currently working on upgrading all our internal and external IT systems to the latest cloud-based technologies. Brand new state of the art IT infrastructure and computers are being installed. A dedicated team of IT and audiovisual experts work every day at La Scuola to support our academic and cultural programming needs. Additionally, we are working towards the goal of creating one the most relevant European cultural centers in New York. Our new team will focus on building a set of amazing programs in various fields: performing arts, visual arts, culinary arts, literature, science and technology, sports, etc. Our cultural programming will happen outside regular after school hours, in the summer and on weekends. Our team is building new ways to support La Scuola. We are currently building our Advancement team. We would like to acknowledge the extremely valuable pro bono help of many supporting parents; in particular, Domenico Vitale, Lou Gasco and Antonio Sullo. Finally, I would like to express a warm thank you to our Trustees of the Board and sincere appreciation to our school community. Thank you to our outstanding Parent Association, for their continuous support, La Scuola Faculty and Staff for their precious and invaluable work as educators, lastly but most of all the children for being the future of La Scuola. Three funds continue to help La Scuola address specific and timely needs at our institution: Technology Fund Paolo Boscolo Berto Scholarship Fund The Can Akant “Johnny” Educational Fund for La Scuola Liceo Students

We would like to thank the following Families and Friends who showed their support this year and on the evening of the Gala Benefit Dinner by making gifts to these special funds. Since its creation, the Technology Fund has provided needed support to address pressing technology needs across our institution. With funds raised during the 2013-2014 academic year, at the Lower School another classroom was equipped with a smartboard and additional electronic notebooks were purchased for faculty use. Software and hardware upgrades were also made at both campuses to improve the overall performance of the network and WiFi stability.

The Paolo Boscolo Berto Scholarship Fund celebrates the memory of an extraordinary young man who graduated from Bocconi University and went on to work in New York leading a brilliant, but all too brief, career as a finance manager and investor. La Scuola Liceo students who receive awards from this merit scholarship fund are those who demonstrate similar qualities of discipline, hard work, and academic achievement.

SPECIAL THANKS TO: Mr. and Mrs. Stefano Azario Ms. Lisa Charles Dr. Richard Marotta Mr. Ian James Schnirman Mr. Giulio Valente Mr. Peter Wolfenden Mr. and Mrs. Giovanni and Marie-Helene Zocche The Can Akant “Johnny” Educational Fund for La Scuola Liceo Students was established in the spring of 2012 to celebrate the memory of our beloved Can Akant Johnny who virtually grew up at La Scuola, attending from age 3 in the PreK through the Liceo, gaining the respect and love of those whose lives he touched along the way. An insightful and creative student, blessed with a kind heart and wonderful sense of humor, Johnny not only inspired his fellow students in the classroom but was also a great friend to all. Funds raised during the 2013-2014 academic year helped La Scuola address the needs of students at our Upper School through necessary improvements to the gymnasium, providing furniture and other materials for the new art classroom, and bolstering scholarship assistance.

La Scuola’s educational programs are rooted in the best Italian/European and American traditions for internationally oriented studies. Our programs offer substantive academic content, provide significant intellectual stimulation, promote personal growth, and encourage students to be open to innovation and new technologies. La Scuola takes great pride in its commitment to the integration of disciplines, cultures, and languages. Such integration is pursued by the dedicated, well credentialed, and highly skilled faculty working in a low teacher student ratio environment. The goal of our institution is to form students that are well prepared for the personal, university, career, social, cultural, and ethical challenges deriving from globalization. The preparation we offer aims to assist our students in two major ways: (1) to acquire the skills and knowledge in the sciences, history, literature, philosophy, languages, and arts that will provide them with the foundation to excel academically in higher education and (2) to help them develop an understanding of the dynamic interaction among disciplines, cultures, and languages that will lead them to successful lives and careers. The Chairman’s award this year went to a pillar of our school community, Director of Admissions and Deputy Head of School Pia Pedicini. In Mrs. Pedicini’s 35+ years of dedicated service she has left an indelible mark as an exemplary educator and a constant and caring presence for La Scuola’s students. A parent-teacher-student flash mob and a very special musical surprise by Jovanotti as DJ for the dance portion of the evening, added to the wonderful energy of the night. YEAR IN REVIEW Lower School

Upper School

This Fall, La Scuola introduced an expanded science program at the Lower School. Educators from the Science Museum of Long Island engaged students in grades 3-5 in hands-on experiments which served to reinforce the elementary science curriculum. Topics included electricity, volcanoes, and plastic/slime or kitchen chemistry.

Additional programs were launched in the fall to guide and prepare our Upper School students in their future studies and careers. College counselor Bernadette Walsh launched a broader program to support all Liceo students and their parents at different stages in the college planning process.

La Scuola’s Chess Team helped to usher in the spring with cause for celebration: Charlie McCutcheon, Gianmarco Costa, Giorgio Valente, Luca Costa, and Meriel Crowley-Wang placed first in the March 15th tournament, NEST + M: Novice 2. Though the weather was still cool in April, our Preschool students had a wonderful trip to the Queens County Farm in Floral Park. During their visit the children got to experience life on the farm. The children learned how to churn and make homemade butter, planted vegetables which they then brought back to the classrooms, and learned about the functions of a worm compost station. The children also enjoyed a hayride tour around the farm and feeding sheep and goats by hand. Students in the elementary division enjoyed performance art workshops during the spring which complimented their language and art studies. Students from the third grade participated in sessions with professional actor Massimo Zordan which helped them prepare for their end of year recitals. Pier Cortese, with the program “Little Pier e le Storie Ritrovate”, presented a series of performances which combined music with a real time view into the artistic process of a visual artist as audience members saw the creation of new work right before the eyes.

Middle School Students in the Middle School participated in a number of programs and social events over the year. Highlights include a Winter Formal with the theme “Winter Wonderland” and an evening reading of work created by the Middle School Poetry Club. Medie students also attended with Liceo students a performance by Improbable Players, a theater company that seeks to bring a valuable message to our youth through illustrating the consequences that drug and alcohol abuse can have even on the ideal family.

In November, an enrichment program on international leadership and globalization was launched for III and IV Liceo students under the direction of Prof. Giuseppe Ammendola of New York University. Coursework was designed to better prepare them for the challenges they will meet in college and beyond. In the spring the program was expanded to include lectures and interviews which were open to Liceo students, parents and faculty. Among the lecturers in the series were Dr. Antonella Fabri who shared her experiences as an anthropologist and Professor Remo Caponi from the Università di Firenze and a visiting scholar at New York University. Liceo students at each grade level had opportunities for fruitful educational travel experiences. In November seventeen Liceo students traveled to Barcelona, Spain for their class trip and to participate in the Model UN sessions under the supervision of Ms. Pitti, Mr. Prater and Dr. Bartocci. First and Second Liceo students traveled to Boston and Cambridge in March. Among the highlights of the trip was a visit to Harvard’s main campus and its medical school where they met with Dr. Pier Paolo Pandolfi who discussed the cutting edge cancer research being undertaken in his laboratory.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS, EVENTS AND WORKSHOPS La Scuola hosted two very successful Open House Events in November for the preschool-elementary and middle school-high school at their respective campuses. In addition to the many PA parents, faculty, and staff, who gave generously of their time to attend, student leaders from Medie and Liceo also represented our school handsomely. Our students offered insights into our educational institution and responded to questions from prospective students and their parents with confidence and impeccable manners. On April 10th, La Scuola welcomed a delegation from Regione Lombardia, led by Assessore all’Istruzione, Formazione e Lavoro, Valentina Aprea, as part of the ongoing collaboration with students and educators from Lombardia. In addition to the summer visit detailed below of students selected for their excellence in school, La Scuola III and IV Liceo students who will participate in the Hamburg Model UN Conference will also have an opportunity to visit the 2015 Milano EXPO accompanied by representatives of the Regione.

Lombardia among those who received the highest possible grade for their 2014 Maturità, attended a special program in NYC from July 12th-18th. The project, promoted by On. Maroni and supported by Assessore alla Regione Lombardia Valentina Aprea, was realized through the joint efforts of Istituto per il Commercial Estero (ICE), the Italian American Committee on Education (IACE) and La Scuola. During their stay in New York, the students from Lombardia met with leaders of a number of Italian Institutions and attended a number of seminars which culminated in a stimulating event at La Scuola d’Italia where the students were received by the Rector, Dr. Maria Palandra, and took in a lecture on the complexity of the political and economic realities of the United States with Prof. Giuseppe Ammendola who conducts the International Leadership program for La Scuola’s Liceo students.

In June, il sindaco della città di Napoli (the Mayor of the City of Naples, Italy) visited La Scuola and spoke to parents and students. His visit, as have visits by other officials, represented an additional opportunity for our school to establish relationships with students and schools in Italy. Patrizia Nigi of Fondazione Torino, a Scuola Paritaria located in Belo Horizonte Brazil, visited La Scuola on July 9th. Their trip was an initial step toward establishing a partnership with La Scuola d’Italia. The two schools have much in common, being international institutions that go from preschool to high school, with an emphasis on bilingualism and multiculturalism. After touring La Scuola and discussing its current and planned programs, Dott.ssa Naves invited members of La Scuola’s community to visit Fondazione. La Scuola Fondazione Torino was established in 1975, through a partnership with the Italian government initially to offer the children of Italian families employed by FIAT the opportunity to continue their studies in Brazil. Eight university students, selected by Regione

Afternoon Adventures at La Scuola Afternoon Adventures expanded its bi-lingual after school enrichment programs with activities designed to enhance our children’s academic experience. This spring Afternoon Adventures included many entertaining and exciting courses for students from Pre-K through 5th grade, such as: Art at the Museum, Super Soccer Stars, Chess Club, and Lego Robotics. Students in the Art at the Museum program took trips to the Museum of Metropolitan Art as well as the Museum of Modern Art to explore the masterpieces of Matisse, Monet, Modigliani, and Picasso. Students also had the wonderful opportunity to attend a display of sculptures from the Duomo in Milan, at Eataly.

2015 Graduates of La Scuola d’Italia Guglielmo Marconi We are pleased to note the good academic performance of our students; all eight and twelfth graders completed their Esami di Stato successfully, with several of them achieving very high scores. Graduation ceremonies took place at the Italian Consulate June 22nd and June 24th respectively. From the numerous Model UN conferences in Rome, Mumbai, and Barcelona to shared extracurricular activities such as theater and performing together in a “flash mob” in Washington Square, the students who comprise the 2014-15 Liceo graduating class have always been close to each other in a bond of friendship that goes beyond the school environment. Unsurprisingly, this class was also always open to embrace and help acclimate new students who arrived to La Scuola from Italy and other parts of the world. In this sense, these outstanding graduates represent the global and multicultural ambassadors that La Scuola d’Italia prides itself in developing.

This year’s Liceo graduates were accepted to attending top-tier colleges and universities in both the United States and Europe:

• Arizona State University • Florida International University • Gemological Institute of America • George Washington University • King’s College • Tulane University • University of Bath • University College of London • University of Geneva • University of Warwick
