Home of the Mastodons

The Allen County War Memorial Coliseum is the new home of IPFW men’s basketball. It is one of only a few facilities in the United States to feature two arenas under one roof. The newly renovated Coliseum Arena has a seating capacity of nearly 13,000 with deluxe suites and club seating, while the 108,000 square foot Expo Center has a seating capacity of 8,000. The total exhibit area in the Coliseum tops out at 170,000 square feet. The move by IPFW to the Coliseum now brings college basketball fans right into the heart of Division I basketball. The Mastodons are bringing the world famous Harlem Globetrotters and ESPN’s Dick Vitale to Fort Wayne, as well as exciting match-ups with teams from the Horizon League, Mid-American, and Mid-Continent Conferences. Along with a very high caliber of sporting events, the Coliseum also hosts some of the hottest concerts, including the Eagles, Cher, Toby Keith, Michael W. Smith, George Strait, John Mellencamp, Creed, and Aerosmith. Some of the most entertaining family events also occur here, like Bob the Builder Live, Sesame Street Live, Smucker’s Stars on Ice and the Shrine Circus. These are just a portion of the events that have taken place at the Coliseum in the past year! Thank you for visiting the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum and supporting your IPFW Mastodons. Please visit www.memorialcoliseum.com for an up-to-date listing of events. For more information on single event suite and club seat rental, or group ticket discounts, please call 260-482-9502.

Season Preview Adaptability: Webster’s Dictionary defines the term as “The ability to make fit (as for a specific or new use or situation) often by modification.” This could be the key to success for the 2003–2004 IPFW men’s basketball team. The Mastodons will have to adapt to new surroundings as they switch their home floor to the Memorial Coliseum, the addition of four new freshmen, and the continued job of carving out an identity at the Division I level. One thing that will not change, however, is the focus and game plan of IPFW Head Coach Doug Noll. Leading the Mastodons into a full second season of Division I basketball, Coach Noll is certain that his team’s brand of basketball will be exciting. “We like to get up and down the floor, and we like to play up-tempo,” Noll said. “One goal for us is to play 94 feet for 40 minutes.” Noll likes to give his players a longer leash than most coaches. “Why pass it 10 times and take a desperation shot at the shot clock buzzer, when on your second or third pass you’ve got an open look?” he questioned. “I think our kids play better that way because they are not under pressure. We want them to play with a lot of feel. If you’re open, take the shot. If not, move the ball, get it inside, and use mismatches. All in all, I think it is exciting basketball!” Exciting is an understatement when it comes to playing in the Allen County Memorial Coliseum. The prospect of playing in front of thousands of fans each game is not lost on the Dons. “Other than announcing that we were going to Division I, this is the second biggest announcement we have had at IPFW,” Noll said. “The rise has been phenomenal, even beyond my wildest expectations.” After playing in major arenas across the country, the Dons’ move to the Coliseum definitely gives the team a sense of belonging. “When you come back to a venue like the Coliseum, you really feel fulfilled that, yes, we are a legitimate D-I team, trying to become a good mid-major program,” Noll added. Getting to that level on the court has brought IPFW to the realization that some things had to be changed. Number one on the list was strength and conditioning. The coaching staff found that, on occasions last season, the squad would wear down a bit late in games. To that end, the players began strength training with Performance ONE. “Performance ONE has had a huge impact on our players,” the Dons boss stated. “It’s part of a missing piece. They are making huge strides in the areas of quickness, agility, and usable basketball strength.” Coach Noll says that the work in the weight room has given his team a new sense of confidence. “I think it is going to help us down the stretch in games, because we’ll know that we aren’t going to tire out, and we won’t let people control us physically.” Experience is another thing that will propel IPFW to the next level, and finally Coach Noll has players in place who have been with the system for a few years. “I’ve always been a seniors coach,” he stated. “I always feel like you are only as good as your seniors, no matter whether they start or not. I think another key for us is that we return four starters and others that have started at different times.” Those starters include junior two-guard Terry Collins, junior wing Ric Wyand, senior forward Jim Kessenich, and junior center David Simon. While he has returning starters, Noll likes how his team has battled for playing time. “The point guard position, right now, is up in the air,” he said. The position is vacant due to the graduation of DeAngelo Woodall and Brad Noll. The Dons have three players vying for playing time. Sophomore Tyler Clevenger and freshmen Byron Malone and Beau Bauer are each making their case to run the offense. “Any one of those three could get a lot of minutes for us,” Noll said. “We also have a wild card in Terry Collins who can play at the point.” Noll also has depth at the two-guard. Backing up Collins will be exciting sophomore Quintin Carouthers, who can also slash to the hoop and dunk with the best of them, and athletic newcomer Justin Hawkins. Noll can also plug in Bauer and Clevenger into the two spot if the situation dictates.

On the wing, Ric Wyand returns, and at 6'7" and 235 lbs., presents quite a few matchup problems. Wyand finished last season by torching Wright State for 23 points and 10 rebounds. Also looking to get time at the three is senior Keion Henderson. Henderson’s potential has barely been tapped due to numerous injuries. Finally healthy, he is ready to make a major contribution as a fifth-year senior. The front court also gives Noll a tremendous amount of flexibility. “Wyand and Brandon Jennings can be a 3-4 combo. Kyle Thrasher sometimes goes at the 4-5, which we like, and Jim Kessenich can also go at the 4-5, but he is probably going to start at the four,” Noll explained. Then there is the problem for opponents called David Simon. The Dons center came on to average more than 17 points per game the last part of the 2002–03 season, while being named Independent Newcomer of the Year. “We are contemplating playing him some at the four because he can shoot the ball so well,” Noll said with a smile. “That’s something no team has seen yet.” Noll has that luxury because of the emergence of 7'0" freshman center Eric Bergstrom, who according to Noll, “has the biggest heart of any player he has ever had.” This flexibility will cause match-up problems for the opposition. “We can go big, small, strong, quick, or scoring,” Noll said. Noll also knows what he is looking for as a benchmark for a successful year. “We have a high mountain to climb, facing the talent that we are facing, and you need to be realistic,” he said. “But, you also need to set high goals for yourself. We think that a successful season for our team will be a winning record. We have 26 Division I games, and if we split those, we are at 13-13. If we win our two non-Division I games then we have our winning season. I can't think of a better place I’d rather be right now. We’ve started this…Now we’ve got to see it through." It’s all part of adapting.

2003–04 Coaching Staff IPFW Head Coach Doug Noll Coach Doug Noll is an optimist. He’s also a realist. Having gone through a tough but exciting transition to Division I, Noll sees the progress that has been made and is very excited. He also sees the struggles that come with making the transition to Division I, but looks forward to the challenge. “How exciting is it to do something that few people get a chance to do — start up a Division I program," Noll said. “It is really our baby. We have to learn how to crawl, then walk, then run, and we have to do it the right way. I believe we are doing it that way by bringing in great kids, great students, very good players, and developing them from the freshman year. That is the right way for us to make this transition work and progress to the point of a good mid-major program." “I’m thankful every day that IPFW has given me a great opportunity to do what I love to do.” There are many people who want to coach at the D-I level, and I feel really blessed that I have the opportunity to do it at such a great institution.” Last season, which was IPFW’s first official season of Division I, Noll led the Mastodons to a 9-21 record. On the surface this looks like a tough season, but IPFW has learned what it takes to be competitive from playing the likes of UNLV, Utah, Oregon State, Colorado State, Wyoming, Nebraska, and the Butlers of the world, by finishing the last 13 games with a record of 7-6. The Dons were also in it, right to the end, of seven other games. “Most schools, during a transition period, play only four to six Division I teams so they can have a winning record. Our goal was to figure things out a little faster so we played 24 D-I teams in our transition year. It was difficult to play teams like the Michigan States and Michigans, but I think it really helped us understand more quickly what we need to do to be successful at this level.” The scheduling has also helped in recruiting. Noll, along with Associate Head Coach Joe Pechota and Assistant Coach Fred Andrews (IPFW’s recruiting coordinator), have brought in a young but talented group for the second consecutive year. “We still have 10 underclassmen and 5 upperclassmen,” Noll said. “But, I really like the way our kids have developed.” That development is being shown on the floor. Last season the Dons had a lead on Oregon State with under five minutes to go and led Wyoming, with seven minutes to go, before falling in both contests. IPFW beat NCAA Tournament participant IUPUI and finished the season with a 23-point win over Wright State of the Horizon League. With time comes experience, and progress is being made. “We always expect more from ourselves than other people do,” Noll stated. “That's why the only pressure we feel is what we put on ourselves. These kids, like Keion Henderson and Jim Kessenich, have made themselves into good Division I players.” “In our transition year, we just wanted to survive,” Noll said. “In our first year, wanted to compete…which we did, and this year we want to win.” Noll is the perfect operator for this roller coaster ride. His calm demeanor and steady hand help his student-athletes excel on and off the court. And, it is a safe bet that his format for success will continue with the leap to D-I. At Spring Arbor University, Noll’s teams averaged more than 21 wins per year during a six year span. Under his leadership, Spring Arbor set a record for wins in a season (29) and winning percentage (.820), and was nationally ranked at #2 in preseason NAIA Division II polls. 2003–04 Mastodons Basketball

12

One of Spring Arbor’s winningest coaches, with a record of 131-108, Noll was twice selected as the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference Coach of the Year (’93–’97). His 1997 team finished the season ranked fourth in the nation. Before moving to Spring Arbor, Noll was the assistant coach at Grace College. From 1990 to 1992, he helped transform a 10-22 team into one that compiled a record of 49-17. In the ’91–’92 season, Grace posted a mark of 32-5, winning the first ever NAIA Division II National Championship. Coach Noll was also a successful player on the court. He transferred to Grace College from the University of Wyoming. At Grace, he was tabbed as a two-time NAIA All-American. In only two seasons with the Lancers, he poured in 2,250 points, which ranks him fourth AllTime. Between 1976 and 1978, he stepped up to the free-throw line more often than any other college player in the country. He also knocked down more foul shots than any other player, connecting on 654 of 741 attempts for an impressive 88 percent. Noll averaged an outstanding 27.7 points per game. Considered an excellent teacher by his peers, Noll has conducted clinics and camps throughout the United States and in 10 European countries. He has also produced an instructional video on how best to shoot free-throws. In addition to his aforementioned coaching positions, Noll also coached at Malone College, in Canton, Ohio, and South Adams High School in Berne, Ind. Noll’s family includes his wife of 28 years, Carla, who is an office manager at International Isocyanate Institute. His son, Brad, played at IPFW from 1999 to 2003, is sixth All-Time on the IPFW scoring list, is also in five Top 10 All-Time categories, and is a successful realtor with Century 21-Bradley Real Estate. His daughter-in-law, Lindsay, is a registered nurse at Lutheran Hospital, and his daughter, Abby, was Player of the Year in Northeastern Indiana last season at Carroll High School. This year, Abby is a freshman at Bethel College and a member of the Lady Pilots basketball team.

2003–04 Coaching Staff Associate Head Coach Joe Pechota When Doug Noll first arrived at IPFW and began the task of assembling his coaching staff, he sought to bring together talented individuals dedicated to the growth of Mastodon basketball. Noll’s first hire was Joe Pechota. Pechota enters his fifth season with Coach Noll and his first as associate head coach. Among his many responsibilities, Pechota is instrumental in player development. An excellent teacher of the game, he coordinates and administers the Mastodons’ fall and spring workouts. Pechota is also actively involved in scouting future opponents, recruiting, and working with players on academic projects. The Battle Creek, Mich., native is a graduate of Concordia College in Ann Arbor, Mich. With the Cardinals, Pechota finished 11th in school history in scoring. He was also the first Cardinal to earn First-Team All-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference honors. Pechota was named Concordia’s Most Valuable Player and set a record for free-throw percentage during the 1993–94 season. After a stellar career as a player, Pechota began his coaching career as a student-assistant under Cardinal’s coach Larry DeSimpelare. He remained in that position until earning a B.S. in physical education in 1995. Pechota then spent the next three seasons as the top assistant at Division III Alma College in Alma, Mich. There he played a key roll in the rebuilding process of the Scots program. At the same time, he completed a master’s degree in athletic administration at Central Michigan University. After his stint at Alma, Pechota spent one season at Division II Ferris State University (Big Rapids, Mich.) Coach Pechota and his wife, Samantha, reside in Fort Wayne with their children Austin (9) and Emma (5). Noll on Coach Pechota: “It’s important to me that an assistant coach know X’s and O’s to be an asset to a program, but it’s more important I feel that he have a passion for the game. Joe’s top qualities combine both of these. Joe has brought a tireless effort to this program, which is why he has earned the title of associate head coach. He has a great feel on the court and can relate and teach the game of basketball. His drive to excel as a college coach allows him to compete at a high level every time out.”

14

2003–04 Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Fred Andrews In his fourth season at IPFW, Assistant Coach Fred Andrews heads up the Mastodons’ recruiting efforts. Andrews is also actively involved in scouting future opponents, scheduling, and academic development. The Decatur, Ind., native is a graduate of Purdue University, where he was a student manager for four years. During that time, the Boilermakers won back-to-back Big 10 titles and went to three NCAA Tournaments. Andrews earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Andrews began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kan. In his only season at BCCC, the Grizzlies finished with a 32-5 record and captured the Jayhawk West Conference, the Region VIII Championship, and finished third in the NJCAA National Tournament. Andrews also spent three seasons as an assistant at Wichita State University, helping to lead the Shockers to their first winning season in seven years. He also coached at Central Florida Community College in Ocala, Fla., helping lead the Patriots to a 21-7 record and a Mid-Florida Community College Championship. Coach Andrews resides in Fort Wayne.

Assistant Coach Prentis Phillips Prentis Phillips is the newest member of Head Coach Doug Noll’s coaching staff. During the last two years, Coach Phillips was a member of Head Coach Jason Kline’s staff at Indiana Tech. Prior to coaching at Indiana Tech, Phillips played professionally in Europe for teams in France and Ireland. He also played in the United States Basketball League. Phillips was a member of the Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs who were coached by former Philadelphia 76ers great Darryl Dawkins. Phillips is a 2000 graduate of Indiana Tech, where he received a B.S. in business administration. With the Warriors, Coach Phillips was a two-year starter, and was named as a NAIA First-Team All-American. Phillips’ duties with the Mastodons will include working with players on academic matters, coaching big-men, scouting, and working with on-court practices. Phillips resides in Fort Wayne with his wife, Julie, and their son, Preston.

IPFW at a glance

Born separately, decades apart, and conjoined in 1964 along the banks of the St. Joseph River, Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne offers an outstanding education at a great value. As northeastern Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning. The university offers more than 175 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs, taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics.

The university offers more than 175 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs.

IPFW continues to grow, both in numbers of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen new soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as for members of the community. Plans for a new music building are in the works, and fundraising efforts have already begun. IPFW also plans to have student housing in the near future.

IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schools of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are dozens of student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups range from departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. There are also several intramural sports groups. IPFW receives its accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

History of Fort Wayne Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins. Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are two professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets and the Midwest League for Single A Baseball’s Fort Wayne Wizards, whose parent club is the San Diego Padres. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisy’s, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights. Fort those who are interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

...with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana.

2003-04 Mastodons Basketball

Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of the television Philo T. Farnsworth was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.
