IPFW at a glance

Born separately, decades apart, and conjoined in 1964 along the banks of the St. Joseph River, Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne offers an outstanding education at a great value. As northeastern Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning. The university offers more than 180 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs, taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics.

The university offers more than 180 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs.

IPFW continues to grow, both in numbers of students and in facilities. Spring 2002 total student enrollment was 10,625, an 8 percent increase from spring 2001. The addition of more than a dozen new soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as for members of the community. Plans for a new music building are in the works, and fundraising efforts have already begun. IPFW also plans to have student housing in the near future.

IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schools of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are dozens of student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups range from departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. There are also several intramural sports groups. IPFW receives its accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

History of Fort Wayne Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins. Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are two professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets and the Midwest League for Single A Baseball’s Fort Wayne Wizards, whose parent club is the San Diego Padres. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisy’s, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights.

...with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana.

Fort those who are interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre. Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of the television Philo T. Farnsworth was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.

2003 IPFW Women’s Volleyball Season Outlook 17-15 or 15-17 — two very similar records but with one huge difference. 17-15 denotes a winning program, the other does not.

2002. She also averaged 2.41 digs per match and had 64 blocks. “She is just very humble, and we ask her to do a heck of a lot,” Hartley said. “She had a phenomenal freshman year. She blocks, sometimes plays middle, and when we aren’t passing well, we move her to the outside.” Souza has also added a new wrinkle to her game this year, a jump serve.

So this is where the IPFW women’s volleyball team begins the 2003 season: In search of the school’s first Division I winning record. “We need to get past the .500 mark and become a winning Division I program,” said Head Coach Kelley Hartley. The Mastodons have been extremely close to that .500 mark in their first two seasons of predominately Division I play, and Hartley believes that this season will set the pace for years to come. “The primary goal is playing our best volleyball at the end of the season,” she said. “We need to peak at the end of the season in preparation for when we are in a conference and have access to play in the post season and possibly get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. So we are all about preparing this program for the day that we are in a conference and winning that conference in our first year.”

Getting the ball to Souza and the rest of the team will be setter Lindi Bankowski. The 5-4 junior has rehabbed from surgery on both legs and appears ready to go. “She is ready,” Hartley said. “The thing about Lindi is that at 5-4 everybody thinks they are going to hit balls over her, but she is a good blocker, she’s just not big. Offensively, she’s able to run down the ‘not-so-good’ passes…making something out of nothing.”

Hartley’s 2003 edition will play to the team’s strengths — defense and versatility.

Also, along with returners Ashlee Roth (So./S-OH/Leo High School), and Jenny Haslup (RS-Fr./OH/Bishop Dwenger), Hartley has brought in freshmen Claire Jackson, Amanda Pfister, Nicole Howell, Kristen Mann, and Brittany Brenner.

Hartley will also be looking for major contributions from juniors Janelle Pollard, “the type of player that intimidates other teams in warm-ups,” and Lindsay Brammer, “probably our best blocker on the team.”

“We are very defensive minded,” Hartley said. “I think that comes from having a men’s team here and our kids playing together. Getting behind a ball from (IPFW men’s volleyball standout) Jeff Ptak, and he’s probably a future Olympian, you just aren’t afraid of anyone…So our kids have that kind of attitude and take pride in that style of playing. We are also on the small side, so we have to defend well. We are not going to overpower too many teams, but I think we are better in that regard this year. We have added some size, and we’ve certainly focused on blocking.”

Hartley knows what the team has to do to reach its goal. “We need to become more powerful at the net, and need to terminate balls quicker. When we get a swing with no blockers in front of us, we need to put that ball away. We aren’t a team of one or two stars. We have a cast of really solid players. We have a lot of MAC teams on the schedule again, and we face Washington (a PAC 10 team). So it is a difficult schedule. We don’t have any opponents that are going to lay down for us, but I think our kids are prepared for it.”

The versatility factor comes from Hartley’s coaching style. She is not afraid to mix and match her line-up to play against other team’s weaknesses. “Our overall versatility allows us to make in-game matchup changes as needed,” she said. “We spend a lot of time working our athletes at different positions so that they are comfortable in game situations if they need to switch. It makes them a better all around player, and it makes us a better team.”

IPFW Hartley’s Angels

Hartley will count on her three seniors to provide leadership to this season’s team. Kirsta Solberg, Sarah Leffers, and Nicole Ray will be the Don’s tri-captains. Solberg, an outside hitter from Huron, Ohio, is the perfect example of what Hartley looks for in a player. “Kirsta has played every position but setter. We move her around quite a bit,” Hartley said. “She’s a very strong blocker, a very intelligent player, and has made herself one of our better players, defenders, and passers.” In 2002 Solberg registered 276 kills, 279 digs, and 65 blocks. Leffers, a Fort Wayne product (South Side High) who plays the libero position, “is very confident in her position and handles the ball extremely well,” Hartley said. Leffers averaged 3.72 digs per match in 2002. Ray, also a local talent (North Side High), is a defensive specialist. “Once in a while, we’ll put her outside with her swing at 5-6. She just has ‘hops’ and is extremely competitive,” Hartley said.

“We aren’t a team of one or two stars. We have a cast of really solid players.”

The Dons will generate much of their offense from sophomore middle hitter Fabiana Souza. Souza led IPFW with 591 kills (4.80 per match) in

Royal Dons Club Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Levels of Support

The Royal Dons Club As our teams compete throughout the United States, our designation as Indiana UniversityPurdue University Fort Wayne will characterize us as the university of northeastern Indiana. The economic impact to our community and our increased sense of pride will be felt with each new competition. We invite you to be a part of the new spirit of IPFW athletics! Because IPFW athletics receive no funds from the State of Indiana, Indiana University, or Purdue University, the support of the Royal Dons Club is crucial to our success. Your generous contribution will assist worthy student-athletes in their efforts to succeed in their studies, in competition, and in life. And because 80 percent of our students remain in northeastern Indiana after graduation, you will witness firsthand the continued benefits of your economic support today!
