Season Outlook here are two truths about the IPFW men’s basketball 2003–04 season. The numbers are deceiving. And this is truly a resilient group of individuals. They endured a 3-25 season that saw the loss of three starters by January, forcing underclassmen into action. While no one wants to see 3-25, opposing teams had to work hard for that “W” — especially at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, where all but one home game went down to the final minute before being decided.

T

As a wise man once said, “What does not kill you makes you stronger.” With a nucleus of young, talented players and an AllAmerican candidate, IPFW is ready to turn it around in 2004–05. Leading the charge for the Dons will be All-American candidate, senior center David Simon (6′10″/Vernon Hills, Ill.), who will be overcoming some challenges of his own. Simon, who declared himself eligible for last year’s NBA draft, suffered a knee injury at the NBA Prospects Camp and will be brought along slowly at the beginning of the year. (He pulled his name out of the draft prior to the deadline.) Simon has been selected by Lindy’s Pre-Season Annual as the Division I Independent Player of the year. Last season, cbssportsline.com rated Simon as the second best center in the nation, trailing only Emeka Okafor of UConn. He was also rated as the seventh best overall player in the nation. Pretty lofty accolades for a player most people have never seen, but his 18 points per game and 9.8 boards per contest caught the eyes of some NBA scouts who project him as a possible first-round pick in the 2005 draft. “You have to look at both sides of the coin when it comes to Dave’s injury,” IPFW head men’s basketball coach Doug Noll said. “It is unfortunate that it happened, and he’ll be slowed the first part of the season. But on the flip side, it is fortunate for Dave that it didn’t happen during the first part of this season, because he would have lost his entire senior year.” “The sky is the limit with Dave,” Noll added. “He can be as good as he wants to be. His confidence level has soared, being able to compete with the guys at the NBA Pre-Draft camp. That will help him a lot this year.” Also helping Simon out will be an improved perimeter shooting game. Taking some heat 2004–2005 IPFW MASTODONS BASKETBALL

off of Simon on the inside will be improved shooting from sophomore point guard Beau Bauer (6′3″/Walton, Ind.) and freshman red-shirt Pete Campbell (6′7″/forward/Muncie, Ind.). Bauer, who started 27 of 28 games last season as a true freshman, has worked hard to improve his outside shooting (34 percent-31 percent from behind the arc). Campbell has a smooth stroke and is a pure scoring threat. “Pete Campbell can really shoot it,” Noll said. “If not Beau, I think Pete will lead us in three-point shooting. He’s just an exceptional talent.” Bauer, a team co-captain as a sophomore, will most likely start at the point, but will see some time at the shooting guard position. The two guard position will most likely be manned by sophomore red-shirt Quintin Carouthers (6′4″/Flint, Mich.) at the beginning of the year, until Simon works back into game shape. Carouthers is an athletic slasher who can get to the hoop. He was lost for the season after suffering a shoulder injury against Bowling Green State University. “He’s also improved his jump shot and is much stronger that he was last year,” Noll stated. “I think he is ready to take his game to another level.” 8

Season Outlook When Carouthers moves into the three spot, Noll has the versatility to move Bauer to the two and bring in sophomore Byron Malone (6′0″/ Indianapolis, Ind.) to the point. “Byron brings us some tough, hardnosed basketball,” the coach said. Malone was second on the team in assists in 2003–04 and gained valuable experience playing well against teams like Purdue and Air Force. Another player sure to be in the guard rotation is Byron Malone’s brother Jason. Jason Malone (6′3″/freshman/ Indianapolis, Ind.) can play either the one, two, or the three. “Jason is a mid-major plus type player,” according to Noll. “The only thing he is lacking at this point is experience, because he makes great decisions, is smooth with the basketball, and he’s physical. I think he is going to play a lot of minutes for us this year. Another player expected to log a lot of court time is forward Quintin Butler (6′7″/junior/Greenwood, S.C.). The former “Mr. Basketball” in South Carolina transferred to IPFW from Wabash Valley Junior College in Illinois, where he was an All-Conference performer. Butler averaged 9.6 points per game and hauled down 8.2 rebounds per contest for the Warriors. He’ll bring an added toughness to the Mastodons’ interior. “He’s not exceptionally big,” Noll said. “But he’s got a ‘hardhat’ mentality. He plays with a passion! He’s not an ‘I’ guy…he’s all about the team, and we are really looking for him to give us some quality minutes.” Also expected to see time at the four (and the three) will be sophomore defensive standout Justin Hawkins (6′7″/Garrett, Ind.). Hawkins was routinely called upon to shut down the opposition’s top scoring threat, and he did his job well as a freshman. “Hawk has put on more muscle,” according to Noll. “He’s figured out over the summer that he needs to be a little more aggressive on offense. He’s a blue-collar worker, and very physical inside.” A couple of freshmen could also manage some minutes on the interior. Red-shirt Charles Campbell (6′10″/ 2004–2005 IPFW MASTODONS BASKETBALL

Chicago, Ill.), a good leaper, can determine how much he plays by his performance early. He will be looked upon to possibly fill some of Simon’s minutes at the center spot. Zeljko Egeric (6′10″/Split, Croatia) has good size, can shoot, dribble, and pass. He’s fundamentally very sound. Noll describes him as “A great passer, and a player who really understands how to play.” IPFW’s success in the upcoming season will greatly depend on how the younger players learned their lessons from last year. They need to get healthy and stay that way, because once again, they will have a tough Independent schedule featuring nine teams that either made the NCAA or NIT tournaments. With last year in their rear view mirror, the Mastodons are hungry for the new year to begin. 9

2004–05 Coaching Staff IPFW Head Coach Doug Noll oach Doug Noll begins his sixth season at IPFW and third as a full-fledged Division I program, knowing what a fine line there is between winning and losing at the highest level. Noll, whose Mastodons finished the season 3-25, saw teams such as 27th-ranked Kent State hit a half-court shot to win by one, Oregon State of the Pac-10 win by two, and 17th-ranked Purdue fight for their lives to lead by one at half and win by 11 over their satellite campus.

C

Noll also saw 10 other games come down to the last minute with three buzzer beaters against his team, and yet he continues to believe in the course of action IPFW is taking and continues to persevere with a positive attitude, knowing that a conference affiliation is on the horizon. “When any team loses 60 percent of its offense, there will be struggles,” Noll said. “But I am grateful to the kids who stayed the course and worked extremely hard to finish out the second half of the year. I think our young kids definitely have gained a

plethora of knowledge and experience as most of them went from role players to impact players.” This year will be different as senior David Simon will lead a group of young and somewhat experienced talent with another very challenging schedule. The Dons visit Notre Dame, Xavier, Marquette, and Saint Louis, among many other quality teams, and have a home stand against Air Force, Utah State, Middle Tennessee State, and Maine. Noll has also added the former Mr. Basketball of South Carolina, 6′7″ power forward Quintin Butler, as the other upperclassman, but the rest of the young guns for IPFW will continue to work to gain more experience each day. At Spring Arbor University, Noll’s teams averaged more than 21 wins per year during a six-year span. Under his leadership, Spring Arbor set a record for wins in a season (29) and winning percentage (.820) and was nationally ranked Noll by the numbers at #2 in preseason NAIA COACHING CAREER Division II polls. School

One of Spring Arbor’s winningest coaches, with a record of 131108, Noll was twice selected as the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference Coach of the Year (1993–97). His 1997 team finished the season ranked fourth in the nation.

Before moving to Spring Arbor, Noll was the assistant coach at Grace College. From 1990 to 1992, he helped transform a 10-22 team into one that compiled a record of 49-17. In the 1991–92 season, Grace posted a mark of 32-5, winning the first-ever NAIA Division II National Championship. Coach Noll was also a successful player on the court. He transferred to Grace College from the University of Wyoming. At Grace, he was tabbed as a two-time NAIA All-American. In only two seasons with the Lancers, he poured in 2,250 points, which ranks him fourth All-Time. Between 1976 and 1978, he stepped up to the free-throw line more often than any other college player in the country. He also knocked down more foul shots 2004–2005 IPFW MASTODONS BASKETBALL

than any other player, connecting on 654 of 741 attempts for an impressive 88 percent. Noll averaged an outstanding 27.7 points per game. Considered an excellent teacher by his peers, Noll has conducted clinics and camps throughout the United States and in 10 European countries. He has also produced an instructional video on how best to shoot free-throws. In addition to his aforementioned coaching positions, Noll also coached at Malone College, in Canton, Ohio, and South Adams High School in Berne, Ind. Noll’s family includes his wife of 29 years, Carla, who is an office manager at International Isocyanate Institute. His son, Brad, played at IPFW from 1999 to 2003, is sixth All-Time on the IPFW scoring list, is also in five Top 10 All-Time categories, and is a successful realtor with Century 21-Bradley Real Estate. His daughter-inlaw, Lindsay, is a registered nurse at Lutheran Hospital, and his daughter, Abby, was Player of the Year in Northeastern Indiana in 2003 at Carroll High School. This year, Abby is a sophomore at Bethel College and a member of the Lady Pilots basketball team.

2004–05 Coaching Staff Associate Head Coach Joe Pechota hen Doug Noll first arrived at IPFW and began the task of assembling his coaching staff, he sought to bring together talented individuals dedicated to the growth of Mastodon basketball. Noll’s first hire was Joe Pechota. Pechota enters his sixth season with Coach Noll and his second as associate head coach.

W

Among his many responsibilities, Pechota is instrumental in player development. An excellent teacher of the game, he coordinates and administers the Mastodons’ fall and spring workouts. Pechota is also actively involved in scouting future opponents, recruiting, and working with players on academic projects. The Battle Creek, Mich., native is a graduate of Concordia College in Ann Arbor, Mich. With the Cardinals, Pechota finished 11th in school history in scoring. He was also the first Cardinal to earn First-Team All-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference honors. Pechota was named

Since that initial year, Pope has set about transforming IPFW Athletics into a program worthy of the name “Division I.” Among his accomplishments are the following: ▼ The annual IPFW Soccer Showcase was reorganized, drawing 11,500 fans in 2003 and 15,000 fans in 2004 ▼ Men’s basketball attendance increased tenfold from 2000, including the highest percentage increase of all Division I institutions in 2003–2004 ▼ Women’s volleyball attendance tripled from 2002 to 2003 ▼ Men’s volleyball attendance was third nationally in 2004 ▼ Contributions to Athletics have increased by 50 percent from 2001 to 2003 ▼ The Gates Center and baseball field have undergone significant renovations ▼ Men’s and women’s golf were added as sponsored sports ▼ In cooperation with the IPFW Alumni and Student Government Associations, IPFW’s Homecoming tradition was created ▼ The IPFW Stomp Band was organized Despite these successes, Pope has always focused on the student component of the IPFW student-athlete. Last year Pope’s departmental goal of a 3.0 grade-point average was realized, as IPFW student-athletes achieved a 3.01 GPA. The IPFW softball, tennis, cross country, and track teams have earned All-Academic honors from their respective associations. IPFW Athletics graduates its student-athletes at a rate that is double that of the IPFW all-campus rate. Pope holds a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from Indiana University. He has been a member of the Bar of the state of Indiana for 27 years. Pope and his wife, Julie, are the proud parents of two sons, Brent and Brad.

INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE

IPFW at a glance

Born separately, decades apart, and conjoined in 1964 along the banks of the St. Joseph River, Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne offers an outstanding education at a great value. As northeast Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning. The university offers more than 180 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs, taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics.

The university offers more than 180 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs.

IPFW continues to grow, both in numbers of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen new soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as for members of the community. IPFW has also opened Student Housing this year, offering a more traditional university experience to full-time students. Plans for a new music building and health education building are in the works, and fundraising efforts have already begun.

IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schools of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are dozens of student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups range from departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. There are also several intramural sports groups.

IPFW receives its accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

History of Fort Wayne Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins. Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are two professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets and the Midwest League for Single A Baseball’s Fort Wayne Wizards, whose parent club is the San Diego Padres. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisy’s, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights.

...with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana.

Fort those who are interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of the television Philo T. Farnsworth was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.
