Allen County War Memorial Coliseum TM

The Allen County War Memorial Coliseum is the home of IPFW men’s basketball. It is one of only a few facilities in the United States to feature two arenas under one roof.

The newly renovated Coliseum Arena has a seating capacity of nearly 13,000, with deluxe suites and club seating. The 108,000-square-foot Expo Center has a seating capacity of 8,000. The total exhibit area in the Coliseum tops out at 170,000 square feet. The Allen County War Memorial Coliseum brings IPFW fans right into the heart of Division I basketball. IPFW has hosted ESPN’s Dick Vitale, the world famous Harlem Globetrotters, and the National Invitation Tournament. This season should be no different, as the Dons play host to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

The Coliseum hosts professional hockey and indoor football as well as some of the hottest concerts in the country. Groups like the Eagles, Evanescence, Snoop Doggy Dog, Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, Aerosmith, and Van Halen have graced the stages of the Coliseum. Gates Sports Center The Hilliard Gates Sports Center is the practice facility for the IPFW men’s basketball program.

The Gates Sports Center is also home for the IPFW women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and men’s volleyball teams. The 68,000+ square foot, tri-level facility is located on the northeast end of the IPFW campus and features a multipurpose gymnasium with three practice/game courts. The Gates Sports Center seats 2,700 for events. The center also houses a 1/9-mile indoor tartan rubber track, five racquetball/handball courts, a fully equipped fitness center, and newly renovated athletic locker rooms.

2005–06 Season Outlook On March 24, 2005, Dane Fife was named head coach of the IPFW men’s basketball team. On March 25, 2005, the media frenzy began. Phone calls and requests poured in from ESPN, ESPN Radio, the Associated Press, and The Sporting News Radio, to name a few. Seemingly every sports radio talk show host in the Midwest, and beyond, wanted to talk to the NCAA’s youngest-ever Division I head basketball coach. Just two seasons removed from an appearance in the NCAA Championship game with the Indiana Hoosiers, Fife handled all the requests with a media savvy far beyond his then 25 years. “I’m not the type of guy that enjoys being in the spotlight,” Fife said. “More importantly, I want our kids to get that kind of attention.” As the excitement builds for Fife’s first season on the bench, one thing is definitely clear: his style on-court will be mirrored in this edition of the Mastodons. “Without question, I’ve told every single player, one-on-one and as a team, that I am defense first,” the former Hoosiers’ lock-down defender stated. “If you can’t play defense, you will not play. I really believe that the players we have are buying into that concept. Defense takes the pressure off to score, because when you know you’re going to get it done on the defensive end, you don’t have to come down and rush shots. You can relax.” While the Dons concentrate on defense, they will also learn the motion offense. “It takes a while to learn the motion offense,” Fife relayed. “I don’t expect that we will come out right away and score 70 to 80 points.” The motion offense will be a new twist for fans who have watched the Mastodons kick the ball inside to center David Simon, who graduated last year as IPFW’s fourth all-time leading scorer, as a first option. In fact, the entire make-up of this team has changed drastically. Fife will count on the leadership of a pair of returning juniors to bring together a squad that features 11 new faces. Guard Quintin Carouthers (Flint, Mich./Flint Central) and forward Justin Hawkins (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) are the only two returning Dons to have extensive game experience in blue and white. Carouthers, a speedy, slashing playmaker, averaged 8.6 points and 3.7 rebounds a contest, while Hawkins, a lock-down defender in his own right, averaged 3.9 points and 3.3 boards a contest. Even though they have been together for only a short time, Fife is well aware of his team’s strengths and weaknesses. “I do believe we are a fairly athletic team,” he said. “We do have speed and a couple of tough guys who will really dig in and fight to win ball games. I think speed and athleticism will be where we can beat some teams. We’ve got to get better inside though. We lost David Simon (who ended his career as IPFW’s all-time leader in blocked shots). I wish we had him for another year. We just have to be tougher…I’d say the knock on our big guys right now is that they are not very tough, but that is something that can easily be fixed. It is an attitude.” Looking to fill Simon’s shoes in the paint will be 6’9” junior college transfer Tyler Best (Lafayette, Ind./Paris [Texas] Junior College). Best helped lead Paris Junior College to an NJCAA Division I National Championship last season. “Tyler is as talented as some of the guys in the NBA,” Fife stated. “One, Tyler needs to realize that, and two, Tyler needs to decide whether he wants to be mediocre or if he wants to be a star.” Joining Best in the paint will be transfers Armend Ademi (6’9”/So./Pristina, Kosovo/Odessa College) and Mohamed Esseghir (6’11”/Jr./Sarasota, Fla./ Hillsborough C.C.). “Armend is raw,” Fife explained. “He’s been playing the game for only four or five years. He’s big and strong. He’s got a way to go, but 8

2005–06 Season Outlook the good thing is that he’s willing to learn. Mohamed is big, mobile, and crafty. But, this is another level, and if he wants to be good, he’ll have to step it up.” Fife and his staff have the luxury of two very good players who redshirted last season. DeWitt Scott (6’6”/So./Forward/Chicago, Ill./Maryland Eastern Shore) and Brad Pompey (6’1”/Jr./Guard/Elkhart, Ind./Grand Rapids CC) have been waiting in the wings for their playing time. Both are the hard-working-type players Fife can rely on. Three players who will also be fighting for minutes at the guard position are Kyle Savely (6’0”/Fr./Corydon, Ind./Fork Union Military Academy), D. J. Posley (6’3”/Fr./ Guard/Hazel Crest, Ill./HomewoodFlossmoor), and Jakari Johnson (6’4”/Fr./ Guard/Grand Rapids, Mich./Ottawa Hills). “Savely is a warrior,” Fife said. “He competes so hard. He can shoot it, and he’s a ball handler. I think once he gets his defense where it needs to be, he can provide us with some significant minutes. Jakari is a tenacious defender. He really takes pride on the defensive end. He wants to learn, he wants to get better, and he has. Posley needs to gain some size and strength, but he has been part of a winning program. We are expecting good things from those three.” This year’s schedule is as challenging as any in IPFW history. Notre Dame, Michigan State, Purdue, Northwestern, and Penn State jump right off the page. “Pound for pound, we probably have the toughest schedule in the country,” Fife said. “It is what it is, and we have to deal with it. It is a great challenge for our guys, and it will be a great gauge to help them understand where they are at. Are we going to struggle? I told the guys that there will be times when we are down by 10, 15, or 20 points. The challenge will be how we fight through that. There have been hundreds and hundreds of game where teams have come back from deficits like that. On the flip side, there are going to be games where we are up 10 to 15 points against good teams. The question then becomes, ‘Can we sustain our lead and have the mental toughness to keep working?’” Fife’s message to his Mastodons is clear and simple. “Believe in what we’re teaching you. Ask yourself, are you doing what we are asking you to do every minute of the day. Trust us — we’ve got four coaches who have played or worked in winning programs. We know how to succeed. Trust us.” At the end of the day, it won’t be wins or losses that Fife will judge as success. “The goal is to keep getting better,” he reiterated. “We know we will struggle at times and we know we will be good at times. All-in-all we want to keep getting better because this is a building process. There are high expectations and high standards within our program. Our guys have a lot of work to do, but I believe we can get there.”

Head Coach Dane Fife On March 24, 2005, IPFW Director of Athletics Mark A. Pope announced that former Indiana University assistant Dane Fife had been selected as the new men’s basketball coach at IPFW. The former Indiana standout just completed his second season on Coach Mike Davis’ staff. “Dane brings a great tradition of basketball coaching experience,” Pope said. “His father was a collegiate basketball player and coach at the University of Michigan. Both of his brothers competed at the collegiate level. He has learned from two mentors, Bob Knight and Mike Davis. He has competed in an NCAA National Championship game. In short, he is a great fit for IPFW at this stage of our development. He brings a tremendous competitive spirit and a strong belief that he can get the job done here.” As a player, Fife was the defensive catalyst behind Indiana’s 2001–02 Big Ten co-champion and Final Four team. He broke the Hoosiers’ career steals record (180) en route to league Defensive Player of the Year honors as a senior. Fife also ranks among the Hoosiers’ all-time top 20 in assists (307) and three-pointers (99), and his .478 three-point field goal percentage in 2001–02 is sixth on IU’s single-season list. Fife also holds Indiana’s singleseason record for games started (37) and is tied for sixth in career games played (131). Fife was the Gary Steelheads’ first-round pick in the 2002 CBA draft and started five of the 34 games in which he played. He averaged 3.4 points and one rebound per game. “I am truly humbled by this tremendous opportunity,” Fife said. “My goal has always been to become a successful college coach and to help young men reach their full potential, both on and off the court. IPFW men’s basketball is on its way to becoming an outstanding program, and I will give everything that I have within me to bring it to the next level.” Pope added: “What most attracted me to Dane was that, more than any other candidate, he convinced me that he wants this position at IPFW — not just any coaching position. He has a passion for our student-athletes and has studied them closely. He has already developed a plan to further the development of our team. His preparation, attention to detail, and hard work will be his greatest assets. I am looking forward to starting this new era in IPFW basketball.” Fife, at 25, becomes the youngest Division I head coach. That distinction was previously held by 30-year-old Jeff Capel of Virginia Commonwealth.

Associate Head Coach Jeff Tungate Last season, Associate Head Coach Jeff Tungate was an assistant on the staff at Oakland University, helping the Golden Grizzlies earn a birth in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to joining the Oakland staff, he was the head coach at Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee for five seasons. While with the Railsplitters, of the tough Division II Gulf South Conference, he compiled a record of 60-74, including a 19-10 mark in the 2002–03 season. That mark was the most wins for the school in 15 years. Prior to taking over as head coach, Tungate spent one season as an assistant for Lincoln Memorial, helping guide the team to a 17-10 record and a Gulf South Conference-East championship. Before moving to Tennessee, Tungate was also an assistant coach at Rochester College for three seasons. Tungate resides in Fort Wayne with his wife, Kelley, and son, Jordan.

Assistant Coach Tony Jasick Assistant Coach Tony Jasick comes to IPFW after spending last season on the Middle Tennessee staff as a graduate assistant. The previous three years, Jasick was an NCAA Division II assistant, most recently at Newberry College. Jasick began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at the University of North Alabama (Gulf South Conference), where he worked under the school’s all-time winningest coach, Gary Elliot. At Newberry, he helped lead the Indians to the program’s most wins in more than 20 years, with a record of 16-13, in 2003–04. Newberry also made its first appearance in the South Atlantic Conference tournament championship that season. Jasick resides in Fort Wayne with his wife, Melissa.

Assistant Coach Jermaine Kimbrough Assistant Coach Jermaine Kimbrough comes to IPFW after spending last season at UMass (Atlantic 10) on the staff of Head Coach Steve Lappas. Prior to his stint at UMass, Kimbrough was an administrative assistant at Cleveland State where he aided the coaching staff with recruiting, scouting, student-athlete academic services, team travel, tape exchange, camp, and various other duties. Kimbrough served as an assistant coach at Howard College in Texas from 2001 to 2003 where he helped the Hawks to a ranking as high as no. 2 in the nation. Howard had a 23-game win streak during his tenure and finished ranked no. 15 in the nation in 2002, when they won their conference championship. Kimbrough helped promote the program performing various roles as an assistant coach, recruiter, and academic liaison.

Graduate Manager Dan Bere

This is Joel Cotton’s third season with the IPFW men’s basketball program. Cotton is IPFW’s director of basketball operations, a role he is returning to after assuming assistant coach duties last season.

Dan Bere begins his first year at IPFW as a graduate manager. Bere recently earned a bachelor’s degree at Indiana University and has begun pursing a master’s degree in liberal arts at IPFW this fall.

His responsibilities have included film exchange, travel coordination, individual workouts, and supervision of minor basketball staff.

Bere spent the past four years as a manager for the Hoosiers under head coach Mike Davis. He was a member of the 2001–02 team that won the Big Ten and was national runner-up.

Cotton completed requirements for a master’s degree in professional communications this past May at IPFW. He is a 2003 graduate of Indiana University Bloomington, where he received a B.S. in kinesiology. He competed for four seasons as a member of the IU track and field program and was named Academic All-Big 10 for three years.

With the Mastodons, his duties include film exchange, film breakdown/scouting, assisting in travel coordination, supervision of student-managers, assisting with the recruiting database, and coordinating recruiting mail-outs. Bere is a native of Hinsdale, Ill.

Cotton played high school basketball in his hometown of Huntington, Ind. He helped lead the Huntington North Vikings to a regional championship, with a record of 20-5, his senior season. Cotton resides in Fort Wayne and is engaged to Jennifer Emley. They plan to wed in June 2006.

H e a d Tr a i n e r D a n F o x Dan Fox begins his sixth year as head athletic trainer at IPFW. He received bachelor’s degrees in both athletic training and health education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1988. Prior to his arrival at IPFW, Fox spent 10 years in the professional arena as an athletic trainer with both the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota North Stars. Today he brings his professionalism to IPFW and to the Fort Wayne sport community as not only an athletic trainer but also as a volunteer coach. Fox resides in Fort Wayne, Ind., with his wife Paula and his children Christopher (15), Sarah (12), and Cameron (8).

Justin Hawkins 6’6 ” Junior/Fo r ward Garrett, Ind./Garrett

2004–05 Season: Hawkins scored a season-high 14 points against Grand Valley State on Homecoming night. Was perfect from behind the arc in four contests in 04–05, 3-3 vs. Grand Valley State, 2-2 vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Utah Valley State, and Maine. Had a season-high eight rebounds on two occasions, 11/11/04 vs. George Mason and 1/15/05 vs. Youngstown State. Hawkins averaged over 23 minutes a game in 04–05, starting 17 of the 29 he appeared in. A consistent shooter, he shot over 43 percent from threepoint range and over 44 percent from the field. 2003–04 Season: Hawkins played in 27 of the Mastodons’ 28 games during his freshman campaign. Averaged 2.1 points per game to go along with 2.1 rebounds per contest. Hawkins main roll was as a defensive stopper. Consistently drew the assignment of putting a blanket on the opposition’s scoring threat. Registered a season-high 13 points and eight rebounds against Tri-State. Handed out a season-high three assists against IUPUI. Before Coming to IPFW: Justin was named All-NECC in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Named All-Area and Academic All-State in his senior season at Garrett High School. Personal: Born: 3/10/85 Major: Electrical Engineering Justin is the son of Dave and Lu Hawkins. He has a brother, Derek, and a sister, Jennifer. Coach Fife on Justin: “Justin is the type of guy that will do whatever it takes to get the job done, and he will do it with all his might. I expect Justin to set the standard for work ethic in our program, and then we’ll push him even further than he thinks he can go.”

Quintin Carouthers 6’4” Junior/Guard Flint, Mich./Flint Central

2004–05 Season: Carouthers shook off the effects of his redshirt season to have his best year ever as a Mastodon. “Q” started all 29 of IPFW’s games in 04–05, averaging 8.4 points and 3.7 rebounds a contest. Scored a season-high 19 points in IPFW’s 71-63 win over Northern Colorado, at the Coliseum on 2/10/05. Scoring in double figures 11 times during the year. Had a season-high 10 rebounds against Grand Valley State to open the season on Homecoming. Averaged over 31 minutes a contest while shooting 38 percent from the floor and 71 percent from the line. Carouthers was fourth on the team in scoring (8.4 ppg) and third on the team in steals (23). 2003–04 Season: Carouthers showed flashes of brilliance early on but was lost to a season-ending shoulder injury against Bowling Green. Started five of the six games he played, averaging 4.7 points per game with 3.2 rebounds. He logged 26 minutes of action per contest and shot 38 percent from the field. 2002–03 Season: Carouthers averaged 2.7 points and 1.5 rebounds a game. He played in all 30 games acquiring 14.1 minutes per game and starting seven. Carouthers scored a career/season-high 10 points at UNLV (01/03/03) (5-of-5 from the field). Has scored in double digits only once against UNLV (01/02/03). Carouthers shot 29-of-80 (.363) from the floor and 3-of-22 (.136) from the arc. At the free-throw line he was 19-of-29 (.655). During the 30 games, he collected seven blocked shots, 21 assists, and 23 steals. Personal: Born: 2/23/84 Major: Fine Arts Quintin is the son of Ralph and Corinthian Carouthers. 50 Zeljko Egeric 6’9” Sophomore/ Forward Split, Croatia/Life Center Academy 2004–05 Season: Egeric saw action in 11 contests for IPFW in 2004–05. Scored a season/career-high three points twice during the season (1/15/05 vs. Youngstown State, 11/30/04 at UTEP). Pulled down a season/career-high two rebounds at Wyoming on 1/10/05. Before Coming to IPFW: Egeric played forward at the Life Center Academy in Burlington, N.J., for coach Darryl Gladden. Last season with the Warriors, Egeric averaged eight points and seven rebounds a contest, helping Life Center Academy to an overall 22-20 record. Jakari Johnson

6’4” Freshman/ Guard Grand Rapids, Mich./ Ottawa Hills Before Coming to IPFW: Johnson averaged 22 points, six assists, four steals, and three rebounds per game for the Ottawa Hills Bengals. Johnson, who is a pure shooter with excellent leaping ability and good ball-handling skills, was named to the Class A First Team Associated Press All-State Team. He is also a Grand Rapids Press All-Area Dream Team member. Johnson has been selected First Team All-City three years straight. Personal: Born: July 2, 1987 Major: Undecided Jakari is the son of Adrian Johnson and Dionna Bracey. He has four siblings, Kevin, Ken, Nikeya, and Terrance. DeWitt Scott

6’6” Sophomore/ Forward Chicago, Ill./Maryland Eastern Shore 2004–05 Season: Scott sat out last year to satisfy NCAA transfer regulations. 2003–04 Season: Scott played his freshman season at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. He played in 22 of the Fighting Hawks’ 28 games. At forward, he averaged 11 minutes per contest, shooting 37 percent from the floor. Scott averaged 2.5 point per game while grabbing 1.4 rebounds a contest. Before Coming to IPFW: Scott played power forward at Chicago’s Whitney Young High School. He was named All-Red Northwest Conference, All-City Second Team, and IBCA All-State Third Team with the Dolphins. Personal: Born: May 31, 1985 Major: Accounting DeWitt is the son of DeWitt Scott Sr. and Sheila Scott. He has one sister, DeNae Shanks. Coach Fife on Scott: “DeWitt is ready to go after sitting out one season due to transfer rules. We know DeWitt can be an offensive scoring threat, but it is crucial for him to improve defensively.”

6’3” Freshman/ Guard Hazle Crest, Ill./ Homewood-Flossmoor Before Coming to IPFW: Posley was an early signee for the Mastodons. He played point guard for head coach Roy Condotti at Homewood Flossmoor High School in Illinois. With the Vikings, Posley was part of a state runner-up team in 2004 and a team that reached the Sweet 16 in 2005. Posley was named Northwest Times pre-season All-Area. Northwest Times All-Area Honorable Mention, and Star Newspaper All-Area Honorable Mention in the Chicago, Ill., area. Personal: Born: Dec. 16, 1986 Major: Business D. J. is the son of the Rev. David W. and Marilyn Posley. He has a brother, Deon. Coach Fife on Posley: “ D. J. comes from a successful high school program. As he continues to develop, he will add some depth at the point guard position.”

Brad Pompey

6’1” Junior/ Guard Elkhart, Ind./ Grand Rapids C. C. 2004–05 Season: Pompey sat out last year to satisfy NCAA transfer regulations. 2003–04 Season: At Grand Rapids Community College, Pompey averaged 8.6 points per game to go along with 3.5 rebounds a contest. As a member of the “W” Conference All-Star Team, Pompey scored 10 points and had two boards in 15 minutes of action. Before Coming to IPFW: Played for Coach Mike Drews at Elkhart Central High School. Named to the NIC All-Conference First-Team his senior season. Pompey was named NIC Honorable Mention in his junior year. Led the Blazers in steals and assists at the point guard position. Personal: Born: Feb. 14, 1984 Major: General Studies Brad is the son of David Pompey and Angie Cole. He has two brothers, Davon and Nathan. Coach Fife on Pompey: “Brad has waited for his opportunity after battling some adversity. He plays with passion and that is something that will help him be a floor leader for us this year.”

Kyle Savely 6’0” Freshman/ Guard Corydon, Ind./

Fork Union Military Academy Before coming to IPFW: Kyle was named First Team All-State by Hoosier Basketball Magazine in 2004, playing at Corydon Central. In his senior year with the Panthers, Savely averaged 26.4 points per game, 4.9 rebounds a contest, and 4.4 assists and 3.9 steals a game. Savely was also named Mid Southern Conference Player of the year in 2003 and 2004. He led the Panthers to a Sectional Championship in ’04, while being named tournament MVP. His shooting percentages in ’04 were outstanding, hitting 61 percent from the field, 34.5 percent from behind the arc, and 84.3 percent from the foul line. He finished his career as Corydon’s All-Time leading scorer with 1,519 points. Savely spent last season playing at Fork Union Military Academy. Personal: Born: March 21, 1986 Major: Undecided Kyle is the son of Leroy and Laura Savely. He has a twin brother, Kurt, and two sisters, Mindy and Natalie. Coach Fife on Savely: “Kyle was good coming out of high school, but I really think he developed his game with one year at prep school. He is now ready to compete at the Division I level.” 24

Andy Stroud

6’0” Freshman/ Guard Martinsville, Ind./ Martinsville Before Coming to IPFW: Stroud played the three-guard position for Head Coach Tim Wolf at Martinsville High School. In 2005, Stroud was selected All-Conference Indiana. He was also tabbed as an All-Sectional performer in 2005. He led the Artesians in scoring and three-point shooting percentage. Named The Reporter Times Player of the week three times. Personal: Born: Dec. 3, 1986 Major: Education Andrew is the son of Larry and Becky Stroud. He has one sister, Amy. Coach Fife on Stroud: “There is no doubt Andy can shoot the basketball. Once he develops the other areas of his game, he will be a well-rounded player.”

30 Brandon Schumm 6’4” Freshman/ Forward Bluffton, Ind./ Southern Wells Before Coming to IPFW: Schumm played for Head Coach Brad Kauffman at Southern Wells High School. He was named honorable mention All-Allen County Athletic Conference during his sophomore season. Was selected as an All-ACAC Conference member during his junior and senior seasons with the Raiders. A stellar performer in the classroom as well, Schumm was part of the ACAC All-Academic team in ’04-’05 and was a member of the National Honor Society. Personal: Born: Jan. 14, 1987 Major: Mechanical Engineering Brandon is the son of Mike and Kay Schumm. He has two sisters, Ashley and Megan. Coach Fife on Schumm: “Brandon was successful at Southern Wells, and since he is from the Fort Wayne area, we jumped on the opportunity to keep him close to home.”

Tyler Best

6’9” Junior/ Forward Lafayette, Ind./ Paris (Texas) Junior College Before Coming to IPFW: Best helped the Paris (Texas) Junior College Dragons to the 2005 NJCAA title. Described as a “throwback” player with strong fundamentals who understands the game, Best’s size (6’9”/230) will help IPFW’s interior play. A 2002 graduate of Lafayette Central Catholic, Best averaged 16.5 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists per contest for the Knights. He was named All-Hoosier Heartland Conference, was team captain, and led Central Catholic to a 21-6 record, winning four playoff games before falling to the eventual state champion in the regional championship. Best began his college career at UNC-Charlotte (part of UNCC’s top-20 recruiting class). He played in 18 of the 49ers’ 29 games in 2002–03. He averaged just over six minutes a game and a point per contest. Personal: Born: March 28, 1983 Major: Mass Communications Tyler is the son of Ron and Helen Best. He has three brothers, Travis, Trinity, and Trumond. Coach Fife on Best: “Tyler brings experience to a young team. He has tasted success and wants to continue that success here at IPFW.”

34 MohamedEsseghir 6’11” Junior/ Forward-Center Sarasota, Fla./ Hillsborough C.C. Before Coming to IPFW: Esseghir played both the power forward and center spots for Head Coach Derrik Worrels last season at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Fla. Esseghir helped the Hawks to an overall record of 19-13 in 2004–05. As a prep, he played for Coach Phil Helmuth at the IMG Academy, graduating in 2003. He was named the Blazers’ team MVP in both 2002 and 2003. Personal: Born: Jan. 11, 1985. Major: Geography Mohamed is the son of Aicha Esseghir. He has three siblings, Mouni, Faiza, and Ferid. Coach Fife on Esseghir: “Mohamed is our tallest player and he is also very athletic. He will be quicker than many post players that we play against this year.”

42 Warren Wallace 6’3” Freshman/ Forward Indianapolis, Ind./ Lawrence North Before Coming to IPFW: Wallace played for Jack Keefer at Lawrence North in Indianapolis. With the Wildcats, Wallace was part of a squad that won backto-back 4A state titles. Lawrence North became the first team to win consecutive 4A state titles in IHSAA history. It was the Wildcats’ third overall state championship. Personal: Born: Dec. 24, 1985 Major: Undecided Warren is the son of Warren Wallace Sr. and Phoenicia Price. He has six siblings, Dre Welch; Megan, Shannon, and Aaron Latser; and Angel and Terrence Wallace. Coach Fife on Wallace: “Warren played for the best team in Indiana last season. He knows what it takes to win. If Warren continues to develop, he has the chance to be a very good player.”

Armend Ademi

6’9” Sophomore/ Forward Pristina, Kosovo/ Odessa College Before Coming to IPFW: Ademi played last year at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas. That program produced NBA players Craig Ehlo, Larry “Grandma” Johnson, and Moochie Norris. Ademi, who is originally from Pristina, Kosovo, began his collegiate career, redshirting at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, before transferring to the Wranglers. He played his high school ball in Kent, Ct., for Head Coach Don Gowan at Kent Prep School. Personal: Born: March 1, 1983 Major: Organizational Leadership and Supervision Armend is the son of Ismail and Hajrie Ademi. He has two brothers, Habib and Hashim.

15 Demetrius Johnson 6’4” Junior/ Guard Cleveland, Ohio/ Kent State `

Johnson is a transfer from Kent State University and will have to sit out the ’05–’06 season under NCAA rules.

Before Coming to IPFW: At Kent State, Johnson played in 19 games for the Golden Flashes last season, starting one. Johnson averaged 2.0 ppg and 1.45 rebounds a contest. At Warrensville Heights High School, Johnson averaged 34.1 points and nine rebounds a game. He led the state in scoring his senior season. He also averaged 21.1 points and 11 boards his junior season. He helped Warrensville to a state championship in 2000, a runner-up position in 2001, and three district championships. Personal: Born: Feb. 5, 1984 Major: General Studies Demetrius is the son of William and Narbell Johnson. He has four siblings, Sonny, Juby, Celina, and Charity. Coach Fife on Johnson: “Demetrius knows how to compete, and he knows how to score. He adds Division I game experience to a young roster.”

Kevin Nelson

6’3” Senior/ Guard Southfield, Mich./ Central Michigan Nelson is a transfer from Central Michigan and will have to sit out the ’05-’06 season under NCAA rules. 2004–05 Season: With the Chippewas, Nelson averaged 17.0 points and 2.9 rebounds a contest. He has hit 153 three pointers in the past two seasons, and was 16th in the nation in ’05 with an average of 3.12 triples a contest. Voted team Most Valuable Player. 2003–04 Season: Drained 75 three-pointers, third most is CMU singleseason history. Ranked third in the MAC with 2.50 triples per game and eighth in three-point percentage (.389). Scored a career-high 27 points twice, 2/21/04 vs. Evansville and 3/6/04 vs. Ball State. Michael A. Wartell

INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E

chancellor Academician and scientist Michael A. Wartell came to IPFW as vice chancellor for academic affairs and chemistry professor in 1993. On July 1, 1994, Wartell was installed as chancellor. His prior experience includes positions at Sandia Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M.; Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif.; and James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.

He received a B.S. in chemistry from the University of New Mexico and both an M.S. and Ph.D. from Yale University in physical chemistry. Wartell currently serves on the U.S. Army Science Board and has worked on such projects as chemical warfare, manpower and logistics, and decontamination. He also serves on the Defense Science Board and chairs the Defense Intelligence Agency Science and Technology Advisory Board. Wartell stays involved in the Fort Wayne community by serving on the Board of Directors of the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce, Corporate Council, Leadership Fort Wayne, and Fort Wayne Philharmonic.

Mark Pope director of athletics Mark Pope was named IPFW’s director of athletics in July 2001 as the university was transitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I. That transition was completed Sept. 1, 2002, as IPFW earned NCAA Division I certification — on schedule and on budget. Since that initial year, Pope has set about transforming IPFW Athletics into a program worthy of the name “Division I.” Among his accomplishments are the following: ▼ The annual IPFW Soccer Showcase was reorganized, drawing 11,500 fans in 2003 and 15,000 fans in 2004. ▼ Men’s basketball attendance increased tenfold from 2000, including the highest percentage increase of all Division I institutions in 2003. ▼ Women’s volleyball attendance tripled from 2002 to 2003. ▼ Men’s volleyball attendance was ranked third nationally in 2004. ▼ Contributions to Athletics have increased by 50 percent from 2001 to 2003. ▼ The Gates Sports Center and baseball field have undergone significant renovations. ▼ Men’s and women’s golf were added as sponsored sports. ▼ In cooperation with IPFW Alumni Relations and the Indiana Purdue Student Government Association, IPFW’s Homecoming tradition was created. ▼ The IPFW Stomp Band was organized. With these successes, Pope has continued to focus on the student component of the IPFW student-athlete. Last year Pope’s departmental goal of a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) was realized, as IPFW student-athletes achieved a 3.01 GPA. The IPFW softball, tennis, cross country, and track teams have earned All-Academic honors from their respective associations. IPFW Athletics graduates its student-athletes at a rate that is double that of the IPFW all-campus rate. Pope has a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from Indiana University. He has been a member of the bar of the State of Indiana for 27 years. Pope and his wife, Julie, are the proud parents of two sons, Brent and Brad.

The university offers more than 185 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics. TM

As northeast Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning.

IPFW continues to grow, both in number of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as members of the community. IPFW now has Student Housing, offering a more traditional university experience to students. Plans for a new music building and medical education building are in the works. IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the colleges of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are more than 90 student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups include departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special-interest groups. There are also several intramural sports. IPFW receives its accreditation from The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. 34

Fort Wayne history of the summit city Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee River and Wabash River basins.

Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are three professional teams based here: United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets, Midwest League’s Single A Baseball Fort Wayne Wizards (whose parent club is the San Diego Padres), and United Indoor Football Association’s Fort Wayne Freedom. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisies, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights. For those interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of television, Philo T. Farnsworth, was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.
