Season Preview

Taking it to the court Head Coach Bruce Patterson, who is returning for his third season with the Mastodon women's basketball program, is pleased with how the team progressed last season as a whole. "We had an extraordinary year, going from three wins to nine wins with our hardhitting schedule," Patterson said. That schedule saw IPFW win six of their last ten ball games. Included in that mix was a stretch of four straight wins, three coming on the road. The Mastodons have their work cut out for themselves this year with powerhouses like Wisconsin, Ball State and Indiana State. "Our goal this season is to reach the .500 mark along with not repeating anymore Indiana State embarrassments, " Patterson stated. The "embarrassment" that Patterson was referring to was a 96-28 loss to the Sycamores at Indiana State. "We want to be able to play with the big teams and make them play hard the whole game, without time off at the end of the game." So far Patterson has been please with the progress of his team, but knows looking good in practice doesn't always translate into looking good in game situations. "Practice tells you one thing, preseason tells you another thing, but nothing can simulate when the whistle blows, the ball goes up in the air, and the guys in the striped shirts start doing their thing." For IPFW to be successful this season, Patterson feels the following will have to happen: Better Bench Productivity, "Numbers wise we are there, but we won't know until the ball is thrown in the air whether we are basketball wise. We need ten, 11, 12 players that can walk on the court and contribute at any given moment." Solid Post Game, "To be able to set-up the perimeter game, we must establish a threat inside the paint." Better Defense, "We ranked in the bottom five, last year, among Division I schools." "We felt last year we could probably score on anybody but I am not sure we could stop anybody." To be sure, raising the defensive effort will result in more wins. With a 4/10 ratio of junior-senior to sophomore-freshman, Patterson will look to seniors Amy Gearlds and Maggie Bruening for leadership both on and off the court. They will be the lone captains but Coach Patterson will leave the option open to add one or two at a later date, giving the players the chance to earn it. Being a captain on Patterson's squad requires someone whose word is as good as a coach's when on the court. Bruening, who averaged 9.2 points per game, was named the Division I Independent Newcomer of the year. She shot 43 percent from the field and 33 percent from behind the arc. Bruening, a local standout (North Side High) is bouncing back from knee surgery performed at the beginning of the summer. "Bruening is essential in getting (the program) to where we need to go" praised Patterson," "She was definitely one of our best players last year." With the ability to penetrate on anybody, the coaching staff will be working hard on helping her make better decisions and also pushing the ball up the court to establish a quicker offensive threat. Even though she only played part of last season due to transferring, Bruening ended up leading the team in assists with seventy-seven. Gearlds, who garnered second-team All Independent Honors, led the Mastodons in scoring, averaging 14.3 points a game. In fact, Geralds was the only 'Don to average double figures. She also dished out 66 assists. The Beech Grove, Indiana native received the team MVP award at last year's banquet. Gearlds is making it a goal to receive "Best Defensive Player" this year. "I believe she has all the talent in the world to achieve this goal and hopefully our bench will be able to help her out", Patterson said. Gearlds broke into five different categories in the IPFW All-Time record books, including a second place tie in three-pointers made (163). Expect her to be number one in at least two of these groups by the end of the season!

Along with leading the team in scoring, Gearlds scored double digits in nineteen of the twenty-six games in which she played. The Mastodons will also look to receive major contributions from junior guard Courtney Nicley. Patterson describes the Lebanon, Indiana native as "Probably the best defensive player last year. She has the ability to guard anyone." She has the knack to project the "go after them, stop them, and not enable them to get any freebies" kind of defense that IPFW coaching staff wants. Nicley averaged 9.4 points a game and grabbed eighty-eight rebounds last year. Verea "V" Bibbs will be making the transition from posting up at center, to fronting the basket as a power forward. The 6-0 junior from Euclid, Ohio grabbed a total of 175 rebounds last year along with averaging 9.1 points a game. "V has been working hard on her footwork and her shooting skills" comments Patterson. Combining those two things with her unbelievable jumping ability will make her a strong force on the team. Patterson is comfortable in this change with the emergence of sophomore Kelly Boyd and the arrival of newcomer Starla Williams. Boyd (6-5/So/North Judson, IN) who saw limited time as a freshman has shown good mobility in the preseason and, with a year of experience, is looking to take her shot. Williams, a 6-2 freshman from Lindenhurst, Illinois was nominated as a 2003 McDonalds High School All-American. North Side product Geneva Murdock will also demand playing time in the Mastodon's front court. Murdock had a season high twelve points against Notre Dame (12/21/02) and a season high seven rebounds against Detroit Mercy (12/6/02). Patterson has high hopes for the sophomore class. Conditioning could be a factor in 2003–04’ as well. Just as with many of the IPFW athletic teams, the women's basketball team has benefited from strength and flexibility training from Performance ONE. "My coaching staff and I are extremely happy with the physical progress of the team this past summer especially sophomore's Jenny Green and Michelle Manno," Patterson says that Green's work in the weight room has really paid off. "Just night and day…she has always been one of the hardest working kids around. Has always had the mental toughness, but the physical ability to do things wasn't there. She worked her tail off (this past summer) and has turned into a pretty outstanding athlete". The Mastondons will also feature some talented first year players. Along with Starla Williams, Ashley Johnson (Kokomo, Indiana), and Leisha Walker (Indianapolis, Indiana) comprise the 2003-04 freshman class. Johnson, a 5-9 guard, led Kokomo High School to a State Championship going 26-0. Walker, a 5-10 forward, was named All-State Honorable Mention her junior and senior seasons. A noticeable absence from the IPFW line-up will be Hilary O'Connell (Warsaw, Indiana) who will be a medical red-shirt this season. O'Connell averaged 6.6 points a game from the guard spot in 2002-03. With the improvement of the current players and addition of talented newcomers, 2003-04 should be a season that IPFW can use to continue its goal of becoming a solid Division I program.

INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE

IPFW at a glance

Born separately, decades apart, and conjoined in 1964 along the banks of the St. Joseph River, Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne offers an outstanding education at a great value. As northeastern Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning. The university offers more than 175 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs, taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics.

The university offers more than 175 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs.

IPFW continues to grow, both in numbers of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen new soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as for members of the community. Plans for a new music building are in the works, and fundraising efforts have already begun. IPFW also plans to have student housing in the near future.

IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schools of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are dozens of student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups range from departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. There are also several intramural sports groups. IPFW receives its accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

History of Fort Wayne Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins. Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are two professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets and the Midwest League for Single A Baseball’s Fort Wayne Wizards, whose parent club is the San Diego Padres. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisy’s, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights.

...with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana.

Fort those who are interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of the television Philo T. Farnsworth was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.

The NCAA—Common Ground of College Athletics By Debbie Harmison Byrne, Assistant Athletics Director, Old Dominion University

The NCAA’s new office building in Indianapolis

t was the flying wedge, football’s major offense in 1905, that spurred the formation of the NCAA in December 1905. Numerous sport-related injuries and deaths had prompted many institutions to discontinue the sport. Others were urging that football be reformed or abolished completely from intercollegiate athletics. So in 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt summoned college athletics leaders to two White House conferences to encourage such reforms. The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States was officially constituted on March 31, 1906. There were 62 charter members. In 1910, it took its present name of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and, for several years, served primarily as a discussion group and rulesmaking body. Now, more than 1,200 colleges, universities, conferences and related organizations count on the NCAA to be the organization through which they speak. It is a voluntary association devoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate athletics. Through the NCAA, member institutions consider an athletics problem that has crossed regional or conference lines

and has become national in scope. The Association, through its members, strives to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the educational program and the athletes as an integral part of the student body. The NCAA also stands for good conduct in intercollegiate athletics and serves as the colleges’ national athletics accreditation agency. The organization and its members recognize that creating an equitable college environment for its student-athletes is among their highest priorities. Working together to enact rules, policies, procedures and organizational goals, its members strive for the common goal of academic integrity for their programs. Just as integrity is key for the academic process, it is also a component in the competition among NCAA institutions. The NCAA and its staff is charged with enforcing the rules and regulations that the institutions vote and impose on themselves. While enforcement proceedings involving member schools seem to grab most of the headlines, they represent only a small part of the NCAA’s total program. The NCAA administered its first national championship in 1921— the National Collegiate Track and Field Championships. Today, the NCAA admin-

isters 84 championships in 22 sports for its member institutions, involving more than 40,500 men and women student-athletes. There are 25 championships on the Division I level, 24 on the Division II level and 25 for Division III members, along with 10 sports that have National Collegiate Championships for which all divisions are eligible. Beyond its annual championships, the NCAA also places a high priority on honoring its members and student-athletes, evident in its honors program and postgraduate scholarships program. The honors program recognizes accomplishments of current and former outstanding student-athletes, while the postgraduate scholarship program annually honors 174 high-ranking college student-athletes who are in their last year of intercollegiate competition by providing them scholarships of $5,000 each. The NCAA also recognizes the need to assist its members in career development in collegiate athletics and has addressed this area through its women’s and ethnic minority enhancement programs. The NCAA Hall of Champions presents a salute to the extraordinary “journey” of the student-athlete and the color, excitement and tradition of intercollegiate athletics in a state of the art facility adjacent to the Association’s national office building in White River State Park in Indianapolis. The Hall features all men’s and women’s sports and national championships in Division I, II and III sponsored by the NCAA. Visitors to the Hall will be treated to multimedia presentations and exhibits that define a new meaning of what it takes to be a “champion.” The NCAA Conference Center adjacent to the Hall provides the Association’s membership and external groups a comfortable and convenient meeting and gathering place. The NCAA’s members form a diverse group ranging from large state institutions to small, privately funded colleges. Their common goal, however, is the same—working for the advancement and achievement of the student-athlete and for the common good of higher educa■ tion.

Putting the Student in Student-Athlete

O

ver the last few years, the NCAA and its member colleges and universities have worked hard to emphasize the student in the term student-athlete. Academic standards and rules have been developed and changed to ensure that student-athletes can excel in the classroom as they do in their sports. The result of these reforms has been that studentathletes are more likely than ever before to succeed in the collegiate environment. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program was developed by the NCAA to help prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing field. The focus of the program is on commitments viewed as critical to personal growth: academic excellence, personal development, service and career development. In addition, NCAA schools work hard to offer further academic support programs to help student-athletes prosper. These programs offer access to study facilities and tutors as well as monitor student-athlete progress. One result of these programs is that NCAA Division I student-athletes have been consistently graduating at a rate higher than the rest of the student body. For the class entering college in 1990, 56 percent of the overall student body at NCAA Division I institutions graduated, while Division I student-athletes graduated at a rate of 58 percent. The rate does not include student-athletes who transfer to and graduate from another institution. Minimum academic requirements that student-athletes must meet to play sports as freshmen in college are one reason for the higher graduation rates. In 1982, a group of college presidents, sponsored by the American Council on Education, proposed a set of minimum academic standards to determine freshman athletics eligibility. The first set of standards was implemented in 1986. They required that freshmen graduate high school with a minimum grade-point average of 2.000 in 11 core academic courses and a minimum standardized test score of 700 on the SAT or 15 on the ACT to be eligible to play sports and receive an athletics scholarship. Five years ago, the number of required core academic courses was raised to 13

and in 1996, a grade-point average and test-score sliding index went into effect for Division I. This scale allows studentathletes with higher grades to qualify with lower test scores and vice versa.

Wanna Play? Know the Rules Any high-school student who is interested in playing sports at the NCAA Division I or II level should learn about the standards as early as possible. In addition, high-school student-athletes should talk to their guidance counselors and coaches to learn more. High-school students can also call the NCAA’s Eligibility Hotline, 800/638-3731. This number features recordings with information on a number of freshman eligibility topics, including accommodations for students with learning disabilities. Students can also order a free copy of the “Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete” by calling the hotline and following the prompts. Information about the recruiting process and about initial-eligibility requirements is available online at NCAA Online (www.ncaa.org). The NCAA’s Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse ensures that student-athletes have met the academic requirements and certifies their eligibility to play sports as freshmen. High-school student-athletes aspiring to play Division I or II athletics

should register with the clearinghouse after completing their junior year. Clearinghouse information and registration forms are available from highschool guidance counselors; from the NCAA Eligibility Hotline (800/638-3731) or from the NCAA Clearinghouse, P.O. Box 4044, Iowa City, IA 52243-4044, telephone 319/337-1492. The clearinghouse keeps registered student-athletes informed about the qualifications they have and have not met concerning freshmen eligibility. Once student-athletes are enrolled in college, there are more academic standards to be met. Student-athletes must show continuing progress toward a degree each year, including a minimum number of credits passed. From the junior year on, these standards place great emphasis on progress made toward a specific degree program and ensure that student-athletes don’t accumulate large numbers of credits that won’t help them earn a specific degree. The NCAA also has established various scholarship and grant programs to encourage student-athletes to pursue their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The Degree-Completion Grant program assists those who have exhausted their eligibility for institutional financial aid. There are also Women’s and Ethnic Minority Enhancement programs and several postgraduate scholarship opportunities. The end result? Student-athletes are now more likely than ever to enter their collegiate programs prepared and ready to succeed athletically and academically.
