HILLIARD GATES SPORTS CENTER The Hilliard Gates Sports Center is the home of the IPFW men’s volleyball program. The Gates Sports Center is also home for IPFW women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, and the practice facility for the IPFW men’s basketball team. The 68,000+ square foot, tri-level facility is located on the northeast end of the IPFW campus and features a multipurpose gymnasium with three practice/game courts. The Gates Sports Center seats 2,700 fans for events. The center also houses a 1/9-mile indoor tartan rubber track, five racquetball/handball courts, a fully equipped fitness center, and newly renovated athletic locker rooms.
CHANCELLOR MICHAEL A. WARTELL Academician and scientist Michael A. Wartell came to IPFW as vice chancellor for academic affairs and chemistry professor in 1993. On July 1, 1994, Wartell was installed as chancellor. His prior experience includes positions at Sandia Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif., and James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. He received a B.S. in chemistry from the University of New Mexico, and both an M.S. and Ph.D. from Yale University in physical chemistry. Wartell currently serves on the U.S. Army Science Board and has worked on such projects as chemical warfare, manpower and logistics, and decontamination. He also serves on the Defense Science Board and chairs the Defense Intelligence Agency Science and Technology Advisory Board. Wartell stays involved in the Fort Wayne community by serving on the Board of Directors of the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce, Corporate Council, Leadership Fort Wayne, and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MARK POPE Mark Pope was named athletic director of Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne effective July 2, 2001. Pope came to IPFW from Lincoln National Corp., where he was senior counsel for Lincoln Re. Prior to serving in that position, Pope was Lincoln’s vice president of federal government relations, directing the representation of all Lincoln companies on federal legislative and regulatory matters. Pope has a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from the Indiana University School of Law. Upon graduation from law school, Pope was a corporate and defense litigation attorney for an Indianapolis law firm. He came to Lincoln in 1989, working in the litigation section of Lincoln’s Law Division until 1995, when he began his position with federal relations. Pope is a graduate of Leadership Fort Wayne and has served the community as a board member for ARCH, the Fort Wayne Historical Society, United Way, Junior Achievement, Bishop Luers High School, and the Fort Wayne Bicentennial Council. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Law and is a fellow of the Indianapolis and Indiana Bar Foundations. Pope and his wife, Julie, have two sons, Brent and Brad.

2003 Season As a Mastodon, Sherman is a three-year letter winner. Participated in 15 matches. In the 2003 season, Sherman racked up an impressive .889 serving percentage.
2002 Season Sherman played in all 24 matches to earn his second letter. He had a career best four digs in back to back matches against Quincy and Lewis.
2001 Season Sherman saw very little court time but when he did get into the game, he made his presence known. Proved to be a team favorite right away.

#11 Matt Zbyszewski 6’4” Senior Outside Hitter Toronto, Ontario, Canada/ Martingrove H.S. 2003 Season Named All-Conference 2nd Team. Started in 24 of 25 matches, Zbyszewski was second on the team in kills with 370 (.354). At the MIVA Quarter Finals, where the Mastodons faced the Ohio State Buckeyes, Zbyszewski had a career high 28 kills. His 4.51 kills per game was 3rd in MIVA and 13th in the nation.

2001 Season Zbyszewski played in a total of 85 games to earn his first IPFW letter. His most impressive match was against Loyola-Chicago (3/3) where he tallied up 25 kills, seven digs, and a .319 hitting percentage.

2001 Season Earned his first letter after playing in 21 matches as a Mastodon. Went an impressive seven for nine (.667) against Clarke College on April 7, 2001. He tallied up a career-best seven digs against both Ohio State and Penn State.

#1 Dennis Santiago 6’3” Junior Setter Bayamon, Puerto Rico/ Escuela Superior Catolica H.S. 2003 Season While starting in 22 of 25 matches as the Mastodon setter, Santiago recorded a total of 1,022 assists and team-high 156 digs. He is now fifth in all-time career assists at IPFW. Santiago broke the match service aces record against Mercyhurst (Feb. 21) where he fired nine aces.
2002 Season In his freshman year, Santiago started in all 24 matches to earn his first letter. He was named MIVA Freshman of the Year. He racked up 992 assist which put him seventh in the all-time career record at IPFW. Santiago dug up a career-high 15 balls against Long Beach State (Jan. 11). On March 29th, he roofed a career best nine blocks in a win over Clarke College.

#3 Mitch Dreisbach 6’6” Junior Outside Hitter Mishawaka, IN/ Penn H.S.
2003 Season Dreisbach came off the bench to contribute in eleven games. He had a season high seven kills against the Mercyhurst Lakers, in a 3-0 win February 21st.
2002 Season Dreisbach played in 21 matches and 68 games to earn his first IPFW letter. He hit a career best .421 at Loyola (Feb. 22). On January 11th, Dreisbach recorded a double-double with 14 kills and career-high 10 digs against Long Beach State.

Sikca’s top performance came against Ohio State (Apr. 19) in the MIVA Quarterfinals. He went seven for nine in hitting (.778), with no errors, and a career high sixteen total blocks. ARNIE BALL HEAD COACH When USA Volleyball needed a coach to lead the 2003 U.S. World University Games team to Daegu, South Korea, they didn't have to look long or hard. They selected IPFW Head Men's Volleyball Coach Arnie Ball for the job. Ball had a plethora of international experience, and he was their top choice to lead a very young, and somewhat inexperience team, against some very tough international competition. Ball’s team responded, having a great tournament, including a five-set marathon win over the French to win the Bronze Medal. Success has been the constant that has followed Arnie Ball and catapulted his dream of building a powerhouse men's volleyball program in the Midwest. That drive to reach the top and eventually bring the NCAA National Championship to his Division I program has led his clubs to capture or share five of the last ten Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championships, including NCAA Final Four appearances in 1991, 1992, 1994, and 1999. This year will bring a new challenge for the coach as he continues to build a winning foundation in IPFW's quest to win the national championship. Entering his 24th year at the helm of the men's volleyball program, Ball has amassed a record of 384-271, which ranks him sixth on the all-time NCAA wins chart. Ball also ranks 11th on the all-time winning percentage list. Ball coached the IPFW women's volleyball team from 1981 to 1988, winning the Great Lakes Valley Conference four times and earning a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1987 and 1988. He ended his eight-year stint with the women's program with an overall record of 231-102. A graduate of Ball State, Ball earned a bachelor's and master's degree in physical education in 1967 and 1971, respectively. During his undergraduate years, he enjoyed an outstanding playing career, lettering three years and earning All-MIVA honors twice. During his senior year, Ball was chosen as team captain and named Most Valuable Player.

Ball has competed as a player in the United States Volleyball Association for many years, gaining numerous awards and honors, including AllAmerican recognition in 1990 and 1991. After his graduation from Ball State, Ball took a teaching position at New Haven (Ind.) High School. He then moved to Harding High School for the next eight years, where he coached boys' and girls' volleyball. He led his boys’ teams to an overall record of 74-19 with three Indiana Volleyball Coaches Association championships. His girls' teams posted a mark of 75-32 and captured one sectional title and a pair of conference crowns. Ball also has a wealth of international coaching experience. In 1983, he served as head coach of the North Squad at the National Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo. Then in 1985, Ball served as an assistant for the World University Games men's team in Kobe, Japan. In 1987, he directed the North Team to the title at the 1987 Olympic Festival, and in 1988, he served as the director of the USVBA Junior Elite Camp in Boulder, Colo. Ball served as head coach of the 1989 World University Games team, before being selected as an assistant coach for the 1991 World University Games team. In the 1990 Olympic Festival, Ball coached his team to a silver medal. He also served as the head coach for the South Squad at the 1993 Olympic Festival in San Antonio, Texas, and won a gold medal coaching the North Team at the 1994 Olympic Festival in St. Louis, Mo. Again in 1997, Ball served as an assistant coach for the World University Games team.

In summer 2000, Ball had the opportunity to be a scout for the USA National Team in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. It was the first time since 1994 that Coach Ball and his son Lloy Ball, setter for the USA National Team, would reunite to try to capture the gold medal for the United States.

RYAN PERROTTE ASSISTANT COACH Assistant Coach Ryan "Rock" Perrotte, former four-year starter for the Mastodons, takes on the role as assistant coach of the IPFW men’s volleyball team. He is orginally from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Perrotte presently holds the block assist record at IPFW with 429. He is also the current record holder for highest hitting percentage in a match (.850 vs. Ohio State, 1999). Perrotte played a key role for the team that participated in the 1999 NCAA Final Four at UCLA. He was also selected to the MIVA second-team AllConference team. In his four years playing for IPFW, he helped the Mastodons achieve a 67-33 record. Since 1999, Perrotte has been broadcasting with College 56 providing colorful commentary and play-by-play for various IPFW athletic events. Perrotte received an undergraduate degree in accounting and is working toward a master’s in communication.
Mark Franke ASSISTANT COACH Mark Franke has been involved with the IPFW men's volleyball team in official and unofficial capacities since the team's formation in 1981. Since 1989, Franke has been a volunteer assistant coach with the team and has been part of all four of IPFW's NCAA Final Four appearances. He has no volleyball experience or background, having learned the sport on the IPFW bench, and takes pride in being known as the most volleyball-ignorant coach in the NCAA. Still, Franke is an integral part of IPFW's winning strategy because of his unique ability to record and analyze an opponent's tendencies throughout the course of a match, and then predicting the next play they will run. He is well-loved by the players, but only because he carries the team's meal money on the road. A 1973 graduate of IPFW with a major in economics, Franke has been employed at IPFW for the past 26 years. He currently serves the university as assistant comptroller, director of financial aid and student information system director. Franke has also earned two master's degrees in business at IPFW. Coach Franke met and married his wife Tommy while they were undergraduates at IPFW. Tommy holds bachelor's and master's degrees in education from IPFW. She is principal and 7-8 grade teacher at Ascension Lutheran School, and serves as official scorekeeper for both the men's and women's volleyball teams. They have two adult children who broke their father's wallet by attending college elsewhere and their mother's heart by living elsewhere after graduation.

DENNIS JOHNSON ASSISTANT COACH Dennis Johnson has been involved with IPFW volleyball since 1988. From 1988 to 1992, Johnson served as an assistant coach and helped the team to two NCAA Final Four appearances. After the 1992 season, Johnson left the team to pursue other avenues. In 1998, Johnson returned to help the team in an informal capacity and then became an assistant coach again in 1999 and helped the team to another NCAA Final Four appearance. Before coming to IPFW, Johnson coached the New Haven (Ind.) High School boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams from 1977 to 1988. In 1981, his boys’ team posted a 15-5 record and finished second in the state. From 1981 to 1988, his girls’ teams had an overall record of 150-50, winning the sectional title once and the conference crown twice. He also received Coach of the Year honors once. Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in business education in 1968 and a master’s degree in 1973, both from Ball State University. At Ball State, he was a three-year letterwinner and a two-time All-Conference selection. Johnson also served as co-captain during the 1968 campaign when the Cardinals finished 33-3. Johnson has been a business law and economics teacher at New Haven High School since 1968.

Putting the Student in Student-Athlete
O
ver the last few years, the NCAA and its member colleges and universities have worked hard to emphasize the student in the term student-athlete. Academic standards and rules have been developed and changed to ensure that student-athletes can excel in the classroom as they do in their sports. The result of these reforms has been that studentathletes are more likely than ever before to succeed in the collegiate environment. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program was developed by the NCAA to help prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing field. The focus of the program is on commitments viewed as critical to personal growth: academic excellence, personal development, service and career development. In addition, NCAA schools work hard to offer further academic support programs to help student-athletes prosper. These programs offer access to study facilities and tutors as well as monitor student-athlete progress. One result of these programs is that NCAA Division I student-athletes have been consistently graduating at a rate higher than the rest of the student body. For the class entering college in 1990, 56 percent of the overall student body at NCAA Division I institutions graduated, while Division I student-athletes graduated at a rate of 58 percent. The rate does not include student-athletes who transfer to and graduate from another institution. Minimum academic requirements that student-athletes must meet to play sports as freshmen in college are one reason for the higher graduation rates. In 1982, a group of college presidents, sponsored by the American Council on Education, proposed a set of minimum academic standards to determine freshman athletics eligibility. The first set of standards was implemented in 1986. They required that freshmen graduate high school with a minimum grade-point average of 2.000 in 11 core academic courses and a minimum standardized test score of 700 on the SAT or 15 on the ACT to be eligible to play sports and receive an athletics scholarship. Five years ago, the number of required core academic courses was raised to 13

and in 1996, a grade-point average and test-score sliding index went into effect for Division I. This scale allows studentathletes with higher grades to qualify with lower test scores and vice versa.
Wanna Play? Know the Rules Any high-school student who is interested in playing sports at the NCAA Division I or II level should learn about the standards as early as possible. In addition, high-school student-athletes should talk to their guidance counselors and coaches to learn more. High-school students can also call the NCAA’s Eligibility Hotline, 800/638-3731. This number features recordings with information on a number of freshman eligibility topics, including accommodations for students with learning disabilities. Students can also order a free copy of the “Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete” by calling the hotline and following the prompts. Information about the recruiting process and about initial-eligibility requirements is available online at NCAA Online (www.ncaa.org). The NCAA’s Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse ensures that student-athletes have met the academic requirements and certifies their eligibility to play sports as freshmen. High-school student-athletes aspiring to play Division I or II athletics

should register with the clearinghouse after completing their junior year. Clearinghouse information and registration forms are available from highschool guidance counselors; from the NCAA Eligibility Hotline (800/638-3731) or from the NCAA Clearinghouse, P.O. Box 4044, Iowa City, IA 52243-4044, telephone 319/337-1492. The clearinghouse keeps registered student-athletes informed about the qualifications they have and have not met concerning freshmen eligibility. Once student-athletes are enrolled in college, there are more academic standards to be met. Student-athletes must show continuing progress toward a degree each year, including a minimum number of credits passed. From the junior year on, these standards place great emphasis on progress made toward a specific degree program and ensure that student-athletes don’t accumulate large numbers of credits that won’t help them earn a specific degree. The NCAA also has established various scholarship and grant programs to encourage student-athletes to pursue their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The Degree-Completion Grant program assists those who have exhausted their eligibility for institutional financial aid. There are also Women’s and Ethnic Minority Enhancement programs and several postgraduate scholarship opportunities. The end result? Student-athletes are now more likely than ever to enter their collegiate programs prepared and ready to succeed athletically and academically.

Reloaded... All or Nothing For IPFW men's volleyball coach Arnie Ball, there is only one goal each and every season…an NCAA Championship. Anything short of that for Ball is an unsuccessful season. “I’ve never had a successful team here,” Ball said.” And, what I mean by success is winning a National Championship. Now, we’ve had some very good teams, we've won a lot of matches, and we've had kids named AllAmerican and make the National Team, but the only reason you coach is to win a National Championship. So, that is the bottom line.” Four trips to the Final-Four confirm that the IPFW head man is on the right track. The chips just haven't fallen the ‘Dons way. “To do that (win a title) we have to develop some team cohesiveness and believe in the concepts that we are trying to teach," Ball noted. “This team is a pretty close knit group, and people who get along and share the same goals, do some really great things. So, I think that is what we really have to focus on.” Going into the 2004 season, the Mastodons have huge shoes to fill in the departure of seniors Jeff Ptak and Angel Ruiz. Ptak, the MIVA Player-of-the-year, led IPFW with 5.18 kills per game. Ruiz contributed 267.5 points, but Ball has been pleasantly surprised with his team's early makeup. “We are probably better off than I thought we would be, even though we have four returners back. With Dennis (Santiago) and Matty (Matt Zbyszewski), who are the stalwarts of the four kids we have coming back, we played pretty well in Canada (pre-season).” “We are very athletic at three spots (setter, middle, right side). We’re just very inexperienced at the left side, and if that doesn't change, it will make it a very difficult season,” Ball added. At the setter position is Santiago, an athletic, 6’3” junior from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, who registered 1,022 assists in 2003, with a hitting percentage of .309. With his athletic ability, he has a penchant for trying to do some things that most players won't even try. Some good. Some bad. But, always exciting. “He is exciting,” Ball said with a smile. “He makes too many mistakes, but he is getting better…he'll do some things, and you'll just sit back and go..I can't believe what I just saw, but it was good.” The right side belongs to senior opposite hitter Matt Zbyszewski (Toronto, Ontario, Canada). Zbyszewski was second behind Ptak in kills with 370 last season. He was also named to the MIVA All-Conference Second Team. “Matty is just a workhorse,” according to Ball. “Offensively he is very good, and he's a good blocker. He is also our best server, so Matty is going to be a critical part of our success.” Sophomore Serdar Sikca (6’6”/MB/Istanbul, Turkey) is the anchor in the middle. Sikca tallied 122 total blocks for IPFW in 2003. He also had a hitting percentage of .377. “Serdar is very athletic with a lot of international experience, so that is a solid spot for us," Ball said. 2003–04 Mastodons Volleyball

Coach Ball will be looking to a number of players to step up and take control of the left-side. “Mitch (Dreisbach), Nick (Belman), or Isaac (White) could play there. So, the six spot is the one we are not sure about. Dreisbach, a 6’6” junior from Mishawaka, Indiana, averaged 2.27 kills per game for IPFW last season. Belman, (6’4”/Jr/Akron, OH) is recovering from an arm injury, and it will take some time to get back into playing shape. He appeared in 25 games in ‘03. White, a 6’3” senior from Gambier, Ohio played in nine games last season, averaging just under a kill per game. Ball has decided on senior Dustin Sherman (5’10”/Fort Wayne/North Side) as the ‘Dons’ libero. “He has a great attitude,” Ball said. “The only thing suspect right now is his ability to pass the ball consistently. He plays with a great deal of enthusiasm and intensity, so we're OK there.” Sophomore Mike Daiga (6’6”/Columbus, OH) will also play the middle. And, as coach Ball explains, it is not his natural position, but unselfishly Daiga will fill a need. “Mike is not truly a middle, but we've had to put him there. He has the right size and work ethic. He's just a real hard working kid. Middle is a position that doesn't get a lot of the headlines…they do the dirty work, and Mike has the right attitude to do that.” As a freshman, Daiga appeared in 56 games so experience is not a factor. Added into the mix are three newcomers. Mike Randolph is a 6’3” sophomore transfer from Missouri Valley College. His impact will be felt immediately. “Last year we didn't have a back-up setter, and Mike will serve that roll for us. He has played really well so far," the coach said. Freshmen Trevor Newman (6’8”/MB/Middleton, WI) and Jarrod Quillen (6’4”/OH/LaGrange, OH) are also new to the club in 2004. “Trevor is a big kid, who needs a lot of experience,” according to Ball. “He’s a big, strong kid who works really hard, and he'll be our back-up middle.” “Jarrod has progressed nicely this fall, he also needs a lot of experience.” IPFW will also get the addition of another player in January. Cristiano Moreira will join the squad once the spring term begins. Moreira is a 6'4" freshman outside hitter from Belo Horizante, Brazil. The same city that produced IPFW women's volleyball standout Fabiana Souza. “I think this group has the potential to push the other teams in this conference,” Ball said. “Ohio State will be good. Lewis University (The 2003 National Champion) has all of their people back, but if we get all of our people in place, we’ll push those teams.” “And, obviously if that happens, we'll get a chance to go to the Final Four, and that is the initial goal. You can't win a championship if you don't go to the Final Four.” “I don't ever settle for anything less than getting a chance to go and win the "big thing", and obviously I haven't done that.” Ball added. One thing is obvious though, IPFW has one of the most talented coaching staffs in the NCAA, and if this edition of the Mastodons learns their lesson well, the sky is the limit.

IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schools of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are dozens of student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups range from departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. There are also several intramural sports groups. IPFW receives its accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

History of Fort Wayne Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins. Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are two professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets and the Midwest League for Single A Baseball’s Fort Wayne Wizards, whose parent club is the San Diego Padres. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisy’s, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights.

Raul Papaleo 1996 AVP Rookie of the Year IPFW graduate and former All-American Raul Papaleo was named AVP Rookie of the Year when he burst into the beach volleyball scene in 1996. Papaleo still ranks among IPFW’s career leaders in nearly every statistical category.
Lloy Ball Lloy Ball, who is currently the starting setter for Casa Modena in Italy and has been on the United States National Team, completed his collegiate career at IPFW in 1994. Named the top server in the world at the 1995 World Cup in Japan, Ball became the first IPFW alumnus to represent the United States at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He then returned to the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
