IPFW at a glance one university. two great names.
INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E
The university offers more than 190 academic programs for undergraduate and graduate students who are taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics. TM
As northeast Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning.
IPFW continues to grow, both in number of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen soccer fields alongside the St. Joseph River has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as members of the community. IPFW has new apartmentstyle student housing, offering a more traditional university experience to students. A new state-of-the-art music building will be dedicated this fall, and plans for a new medical education building are moving forward. IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the College of Arts and Sciences; the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; the College of Health an Human Services; the College of Visual and Performing Arts; the Richard T. Doermer School of Business and Management Sciences; and the School of Education. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are nearly 100 student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups include departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, and special-interest groups. There are also several intramural sports. IPFW is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. 2007 IPFW WOMEN’s VOLLEYBALL

Fort Wayne history of the summit city Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins.

Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sportsminded, there are three professional teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets, the Midwest League’s Single A Baseball Fort Wayne Wizards (whose parent club is the San Diego Padres), and the United Indoor Football Association’s Fort Wayne Fusion. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisies, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights. For those interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Fort Wayne Ballet, Civic Theatre, Artlink, the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre. Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of the television, Philo T. Farnsworth, was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps. 4

The center is also the practice facility for the IPFW men’s basketball program. The more than 68,000-squarefoot, tri-level facility is located on the northeast end of the IPFW campus and features a multipurpose gymnasium with three practice/game courts. The Gates Sports Center seats 2,700 spectators for events. The center also houses a 1/9mile indoor tartan rubber track, five racquetball/handball courts, a fully equipped fitness center, and newly renovated athletic locker rooms.

Tommy Bell
INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E
director of athletics James T. (Tommy) Bell is IPFW’s new director of athletics beginning with the 2007–08 academic year and comes from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He has been the constituent development officer for the Saluki’s Department of Athletics since October 2001. As the director of athletic development, Bell oversaw a staff of two that managed all fundraising efforts within the department. He established the Saluki Athletic Scholarship Fund in fall 2002 and increased that fund by more than 450 percent.
TM
“I am honored and proud to be chosen to lead the athletic department at IPFW. This is truly an exciting time in the university’s athletic history as we enter the Summit League,” Bell said. “I am pleased that Tommy is joining the Mastodon family here at IPFW,” Chancellor Wartell noted. “He brings to us a wealth of knowledge and experience in NCAA Division I collegiate athletic administration and fundraising. Tommy’s high energy level, his people skills, and his natural warmth will make him an instant success in both the Mastodon and Fort Wayne communities. I’m sure that with his abilities and talents, the Mastodons will be reaching new goals in a very short time.” Most recently, Bell led the SIU athletic department’s comprehensive capital campaign efforts for The Opportunity Through Excellence: The Campaign For Southern Illinois University. This project facilitated the first phases of the proposed “Saluki Way” master facility plan. Bell received an undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech in 1979, and an M.S.Ed. from Radford University in 1987. His previous development experience was at Northern Illinois University as assistant athletic director for development from 1990–99. He also served as head athletic trainer at Radford University in Virginia from 1980–84, and then serving full time as athletic trainer for the Philadelphia Phillies AAA affiliate, the Portland Beavers from 1984–87. Tommy and his wife, Laurie, currently live in Makanda, Ill., and have two children: Joey (22) and Courtney (20). Both are attending SIU.

Meet the Coaches...
2007 IPFW WOMEN’s VOLLEYBALL
10
Head Coach Kelley Hartley Hutton Kelley Hartley Hutton was named women’s volleyball head coach at IPFW in July 1999, where she has been charged with carrying the torch for a university with a rich volleyball history. Since that appointment, the Mastodons are 172–83 (67 percent) and coming off a redhot 26–10 overall record to mark their fourthstraight 20-plus win season. Hartley Hutton guided IPFW to the 2006 Independent Championship Title and was named Independent Coach of the Year for the third time in five years. With a 309–150 career record (67 percent), a home crowd joined Hartley Hutton in celebrating her 300th career victory when the Dons swept Buffalo on Oct. 14, 2006. Hartley Hutton is currently ranked 43rd in the nation in winning percentage as an active coach. Known for playing gutsy defense, IPFW ended the ’06 campaign ranked 19th in the country in digs per game (19.08 digs/game) with then-junior Peachy Jankowski ranked 24th individually. The Dons 88 RPI ranking was good for third-best of 10 NCAA Division I volleyball teams in Indiana, behind Notre Dame and Purdue. The women’s volleyball team “won” in the classroom a year ago, too. Hartley Hutton’s team turned in a combined 3.28 grade-point average last year while juggling a hectic travel schedule. In 2006, Hartley Hutton coached her first-ever Academic All-American in middle blocker Claire Jackson, who graduated with a perfect 4.0 in biology and is now enrolled in Indiana University’s School of Dentistry.
(a native of Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and playing in front of her family in an IPFW jersey. Souza shattered IPFW career records for kills, setting it at 2,305. The previous record stood at 1,895. She repeated as Independent Offensive Player of the Year in 2005. She was 16th in the nation in kills per game (4.94 kpg). Off the court, Big Brothers/Big Sisters is Hartley Hutton’s favorite non-profit organization, and she has made time to mentor an area “little” since 2002, a relationship she cherishes. IPFW women’s volleyball matches are standard fall events for the organization’s First Friends Program. After those matches, Hartley Hutton and her team use this as an opportunity to talk to area youth about the importance of education and setting goals. Hartley Hutton came to IPFW in 1999 after serving one year at Robert Morris University rebuilding that program. In just one year, her recruiting class led the Colonials to a Northeast Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 1999, redeeming a seventh place league finish the year before. Hartley Hutton began her coaching career at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, for four seasons (1994–97), leading the team to back-to-back Mid-Ohio Conference titles and the NAIA tournament (1996 and 1997). At Walsh, she compiled a record of 131–44; earned MOC Coach-of-theYear, twice; and was the league’s chairperson and regional representative. She also served as the assistant athletic director and senior woman administrator at Walsh. A 1991 graduate from the University of Toledo, Hartley Hutton played four years for the Rockets, serving as captain her junior and senior years. She earned an M.S. in sports administration from Bowling Green State University in 1993 while working at the Mid-American Conference office. After completing a one-year NCAA internship with the MAC, she was appointed to a full-time position in 1992. Kelley and her husband, Craig Hutton, were married in Feb. 2004 after meeting at IPFW. They reside in Fort Wayne, and their daughter, Kennedy, was born last April.
Directing IPFW through the Dons’ final two years of Division II play, Hartley Hutton then led the Dons through a transition to the serious Division I volleyball force it is now. She led IPFW to a 2000 regularseason championship its last year competing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and compiled an overall record of 23–7 that season. In 2001, the Dons first year of Division I play, they posted a 13–14 mark followed by a 16–18 season in 2002—just shy of the .500 mark again. But in 2003, the Dons rolled to a 22–10 record and have not won fewer than 22 matches since. For the educational and cultural experience of her studentathletes’ lifetimes, Hartley Hutton took the squad to Brazil in May 2003 for competitions, tourist excursions, and team bonding. It also meant “going home” for graduate assistant coach Fabiana Souza 2007 IPFW WOMEN’s VOLLEYBALL

Associate Head Coach Stephen Florio Stephen Florio begins his fifth season with IPFW. Florio has eight years of NCAA Division I coaching experience as well as nine years of high school, junior high school, and USAV Juniors coaching experience. He also serves as the AVCA assistant coaches representative for Division I for the Summit League.
Florio also has nine years of USAV Girls Juniors coaching experience. In New York, he coached for the Long Island Big Apple Volleyball Club for two years and the Creole Big Apple Volleyball Club for three years. Florio is currently the girls 18 and under coach and freshmen and sophomore training coach for the Fort Wayne Volleyball Club. He has been with FWVBC for four years.
Florio played two years of volleyball at Nassau (N.Y.) Community College in 1994 and 1995 before transferring to Division I St. Francis College (Pa.) and playing two years for the Red Flash. At Nassau, he helped the Lions to a regional championship in 1994 and a runner-up spot in 1995. At St. Francis, Florio served as a defensive specialist for the Red Flash.
During the summers of 2005 and 2006, Florio served as head coach of the Great Lakes High Performance Team at the USA High Performance Tournament. In 2006, he lead the team to a third place finish at the tournament and a bronze medal. It was the first time the Great Lakes Region had won a medal.
Prior to IPFW, Florio served four years as an assistant coach at Hofstra University. While at Hofstra, Florio assisted in leading the Pride to two conference championships and two consecutive NCAA tournament appearances in 1999 and 2000.
Since summer 1993, Florio has lent his experience to camps and clinics at the University of Illinois, Ball State University, Bowling Green State University, Syracuse, Hofstra, IPFW, the Premier Elite Camp, World Volleyball Training Center, and the Great Lakes High Performance Camp.
Florio’s eight years of high school experience is highlighted by five years as the head coach of the boys varsity volleyball team for Division Ave./MacArthur High School in Levittown, N.Y. During that time, Florio led the team to its first ever playoff appearance in 2000, and a Nassau County Conference II-A Championship in 2003. Along with winning a conference championship, Florio was named Conference Coach of the Year in 2003.
Florio received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from St. Francis (Pa.) in 1998 and a master’s degree in secondary education in 2002 from Dowling College. On June 3, 2007, he completed his first marathon, and raised $1,370 for charity in the process.
Graduate Assistant Coach Fabiana Souza Fabiana Souza enters her second year as a graduate assistant coach at IPFW. Souza started a master’s degree in communication in January 2006. She completed a bachelor’s degree in communication in December 2005. Souza currently holds the career kill record with 2,305 kills in her four year career at IPFW. In 2004, she set a new single season record for kills with 621. The previous record had stood for 20 years. Souza finished her collegiate career nationally ranked in kills per game, averaging 4.94 per game and was 16th in the nation. Souza finished with an average of 4.88 kills/game, 3.04 digs/game, and a .237 hitting percentage for her career.
Athletic Trainer Scott Knerr Knerr begins his eighth year as associate athletic trainer at IPFW. He received a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Ball State University in 1995. Knerr completed a master’s degree in sports management at the University of Utah. While at Utah, he was a graduate assistant athletic trainer with the Ute’s women’s soccer team and nationally ranked women’s gymnastics team. Knerr resides in Fort Wayne with his wife Jen, and his children; Parker (6), Claire (4), and Liam (2).
Souza was named MVP of three tournaments in her career and was named to eight All-Tournament teams. She was named to the AllIndependent team in 2003, 2004, and 2005 and was Offensive Player of the Year in 2003 and 2005. In 2004, IPFW won the Independent Tournament, and Souza was named tournament MVP.

Head Coach Kelley Hartley Hutton Ninth Year
17
A Look Ahead... Expectations will be very high on Aug. 24, as it marks the start of the 2007 IPFW women’s volleyball season. In the team’s first year competing in the Summit League, the Mastodons have their sights set on a championship and an NCAA tournament berth. “We recognize that our goal of winning a championship in our first year in the league is a lofty one, but it is one that we are excited about and ready to earn,” said ninth year Head Coach Hartley Hutton. “This team should have a very clear blueprint for how they need to work and prepare for Summit League competition. We are fortunate that we played many of these teams as an Independent and have a healthy rivalry with them already.” IPFW won the 2006 Independent Championship, its third title in five tries, defeating now-league opponent North Dakota State to reach the finals. The Mastodons have also faced IUPUI, Western Illinois, Oral Roberts, Cententary, Oakland, North Dakota State, and South Dakota State. Since the transition to Division I, the Mastodons have compiled a 22–6 record against the Summit League. Against IUPUI—the Dons instate rival—they are even at 3–3. Oral Roberts is the only institution with an upper hand against IPFW, defeating them last year at the UVSC/LaQuinta Invitational. Against fellow new members North Dakota State and South Dakota State, the Dons are 5–1 and 3–1, respectively. IPFW holds an 8–0 record against Oakland, 2–0 record against Western Illinois, and are 1–0 against Centenary College. The senior class of Peachy Jankowski (libero), Cynara Martins (outside hitter), and Patricia Azevedo (outside hitter) has helped the Mastodons become a volleyball force in the Midwest. They do not know a season with fewer than 22 wins since the Mastodons have won at least 20 matches four years straight, including a 26–10 mark last season. Despite losing three seniors—all starters in some capacity (middle blocker Claire Jackson, outside hitter Nicole Howell, and outside hitter Amanda Pfister)—Hartley calls her 2007 team experienced. “We return our starting setter, libero, a middle, an outside, and our opposite. I’d say that is a seasoned group,” said Hartley Hutton. “It will be exciting to see the newcomers contribute, too, and I believe they will.” Setting Jessica Dominiak (Waterville, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) won the starting job for most of the 2006 season, but she had to use the spring season for surgery and then rehabilitation. With the most experience and leadership knowhow—as well as a point-scoring, left-handed attack—Dominiak looks to be the likely floor captain for the Dons again. Dominiak was 183rd in the nation last season in assists per game with 10.21. Dominiak hit at a .271 clip and averaged 1.10 kills/game. She was named to the Independent All-Academic Team. 2007 IPFW WOMEN’s VOLLEYBALL
Shannon Reuter (Tiffin, Ohio/Tiffin Columbian), another gifted athlete, received the starting nod for a segment of last season, too. Reuter saw action in 30 matches, averaging 5.62 assists/game and 1.38 digs/game. Despite her size, Reuter’s a leaper and good technical blocker on the right side. Her athletic ability makes her an automatic contender. “We are really fortunate to have two quality setters in Jess and Shannon. I hesitate to call either a ‘back-up’ at this point. And their strengths, as well as short-comings, are so different that they offer something completely unique to our team,” said Hartley Hutton. Outside Hitters The outside hitting position is wide open. Likely starters are the senior Brazilian tandom of Cynara Martins (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Centro Educational Miniero) and Patricia Azevedo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Western Nebraska C.C.). Martins led the Dons in kills, kills/game, points, and double-doubles. Martins had 18 double-doubles in 36 matches, averaging 3.23 kills/game and 3.50 digs/game. Azevedo averaged 1.43 kills/game in her first season at IPFW. Martins, a fierce competitor, was named All-Tournament Team at the Duquesne Omni William Penn Tournament and The Independent Championship, MVP of the IPFW Invitational, and Second-Team All-Independent last year. “Though Cynara is still not playing at 100 percent, she can help us with her back court play and competitive spirit. She has been a mainstay in our line-up since her freshman campaign, and I am certain she will look for a way to be a value to our line-up,” said Hartley Hutton. Ironically, both Martins and Azevedo are recovering from injuries and might not reach the 18
peak of their game until later in the fall. Newcomers Stephanie Lamberti (Clinton Township, Mich./L’Anse Creuse) and Mayara Schlindwein (Nova Petropolis, Brazil/Colegio Cenecista Frederico Michaelsen) could see early action. Lamberti is crafty and already understands that there is more than one way to score on the outside, while Schlindwein offers more size and an international style of play. “We will have to lean on Stephanie and Mayara early,” said Hartley Hutton. “They won’t be afforded a leisurely time to adjust to our style because we need them to perform at a high level immediately. As newcomers, this is a great opportunity for both of them.” Middle Hitters A lightning jump serve and a punishing quick attack earned nowsophomore Rebekah Roehm (Willshire, Ohio/Parkway) a starting position early during her freshman year. Not coincidently, the Dons finished the second half of 2006, losing just two of 18 matches after an 8–8 start. And the accolades piled on: Independent Newcomer of the Week: Sept. 5, Sept. 26, and Oct. 31; AllTournament Team at IPFW Invitational; MVP of the Independent Championships; and Honorable Mention All-Independent Team. Roehm also ranked nationally in aces per game (273rd, 0.35 aces/game) and hitting percentage (264th, .279). “Bekah gets better and better and offers consistency to our middle attack. She is aggressive and very competitive, so she’s a natural ‘go-to’ type,” said Hartley Hutton.
Dakota State on Oct. 7, 2006, and the season record for digs with 742. She was also named All-Tournament Team at the Michigan/Nike Invitational and at the IPFW Invitational, Independent Defensive Player of the Year, and First Team All-Independent. The coaching staff thinks Jankowski is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate in the Summit League as well. “Peachy has improved her game every year for us. She has been drilled, and drilled, and drilled and looks at practice as an opportunity to improve. We can’t ask for much more from her,” said Hartley Hutton. Junior Christine Simon (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) and sophomore Jamie Schwartz (Decatur, Ind./Adams Central) will serve as defensive specialists. Schwartz saw valuable court time as a freshman and continued to improve in the spring season. The Mastodons will look to capitalize on their experience to propel themselves to their first NCAA tournament berth at the Division I level. The Dons will travel to the Dayton Flyer Classic and the Clarion Classic hosted by Western Michigan before hosting the 8th IPFW Invitational on Sept. 7 and 8. IPFW will open the home schedule with Eastern Michigan on Aug. 28 and the conference home schedule with North Dakota State on Sept. 22. IPFW hosts the Summit League Championships on Nov. 16 and 17 at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center. The top four teams will converge on the IPFW campus for the championships and the automatic NCAA berth.
Junior Kylee Hervey (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) trained in the middle position all spring, and Hartley Hutton thinks she will contend for the remaining middle blocker position. “Kylee is quick and worked hard to learn the position last spring. I hope this is a break-out year for her,” said Hartley Hutton. Look for freshmen Taryn Parker (Alto, Mich./Caledonia) and Jordan Staus (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) to see action in the middle, too. Parker comes from one of the best clubs in Michigan (Far Out) and brings a combination of size, speed, and sound, technical training. Staus, a good leaper with a great attitude, is expected to add depth to the middle and possibly train at the pin positions, too. Opposite Junior Jessica Miller’s (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia) imposing block and versatility to attack a variety of play sets makes her the choice on the right side. Miller averaged 2.56 kills/game last season. She earned All-Tournament Team at the Michigan/Nike Invitational and the Utah Valley State/LaQuinta Invitational. “Jess is no doubt one of the most consistent and hardest workers on the team. And although she has a quiet demeanor, she wants to rip somebody’s head off. Gotta love that,” said Hartley Hutton. Defense Fans can count on the Mastodons to play their trademark solid defense and display patient and sound ball control. IPFW ranked 19th in the nation in digs per game last year, averaging 19.08 digs per game. The efforts were led by starting libero Peachy Jankowski (Fraser, Mich./Fraser), who ranked 24th individually with 5.62 digs per game. Jankowski set a match record of 34 digs vs. North 2007 IPFW WOMEN’s VOLLEYBALL

A little more about Peachy.... Best Trip of 2006? Oakland—because I get to go “home” to Michigan and the support from my local friends and family is awesome and makes playing there that much better for me. Best Memory of 2006? The Independent Championship game vs. North Dakota State when the NDSU fans rushed the floor when they thought the game was over and Amanda Pfister was running circles on our side of the court with her fists in the air. We ended up winning by 2 points! Superstitions? I always do a little handshake with Fabi before the games. It started when we played together, and we still do it before I go onto the court. Any plans after graduation? Become a translator or work for a business doing foreign relations while playing beach volleyball in California. If you could bring anything to Fort Wayne from your hometown, what would it be? SAGANAKI-OPA! Nobody knows what this is and I always rave about it. Every time I go home, I get this awesome appetizer. It’s flaming cheese! What is in your CD/MP3 plaayer before a game? This foreign song. I don’t know the name, but Christine knows what I’m talkin’ ’bout. What are you looking forward to this season? This season is different from every other season because we actually have the opportunity to go to the NCAA tournament, and I’m looking forward to every match being just as important as the next and getting after it this year. What do you miss most about youur hometown? I miss my family the most, plus the volleyball fanatics I grew up with. But mostly, I miss Coney Island and La Shish—awesome food. Road trip you don’t want to make? The Dakotas. There’s only so much Catch Phrase, and so many things you can do to occupy the 15 hour bus ride.
