HEAD COACH ARNIE BALL
E Embarking oon his 29th yyear at the hhelm of the IPFW men’s IP volleyball program, ccoach Arnie Ball’s phiB losophy has lo remained 29th Season cconstant. Ball State ‘67 Ball B has amassed over 460 wins as a Division I men’s volleyball coach and he continues to produce some of the most successful teams and players in the nation. Two years removed from a trip to the NCAA title game, Ball’s squad has many fresh faces and will return only two starters from a class that put together 71 wins over a four-year span. Despite the theory that men’s volleyball is more popular and competitive on the west coast, Ball continues to reinforce the Midwest as a plethora of volleyball as his program has made six trips to the season’s final weekend for the NCAA Tournament, and has won seven MIVA Championships. Also under Ball’s leadership, the Mastodon program has produced 15 All-Americans, two Olympians, and six MIVA Conference Players of the Year. The six Final Four four teams include finishing fourth in 1992 and 1994, third in 1991, 1999, and 2006 and second in 2007, falling 3-1 to Irvine in the latter. After the Mastodons trip to the 2007 Final Four, Ball was named both the AVCA Divistion I-II National Coach of the Year as well as Asics/ Volleyball Magazine Coach of the Year, firsts for the ‘Dons storied program. Ball was the third head coach of the women’s volleyball program at IPFW coaching from 1981-88. Under his leadership, IPFW won the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) four times and earned a place in the NCAA Division II Tournament

back-to-back years in 1987-88. He ended his eight year tenure with the women’s team with an overall record of 231-102 (.693). In 2005 Ball was presented with the prestigious Hilliard Gates achievement award for lifetime accomplishments and contributions to the sporting community of Fort Wayne. In 2003, USA volleyball called for Ball’s experience to lead a young but talented U.S. World University Team at the games in Daegu, South Korea. Ball’s team responded with a number of impressive wins, including a marathon, five-set match against France which clinched the team a bronze medal. In 1983, Ball served as coach of the North Squad at the National Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, CO. In ‘85 he served as an assistant for the World University Games men’s team in Kobe, Japan. In ‘87 he directed the North Team to the title at the Olympic Festival. In ‘88 he served as the director of the USVBA Junior Elite Camp in Boulder, CO. He served as the coach of the South Squad at the ‘93 Olympic Festival in San Antonio, TX. In ‘94 his North Team won gold at the Olympic Festival in St. Louis, MO. In 2000 Ball had the chance to be a scout for the U.S. National Team in Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. A graduate of Ball State University, Ball earned a bachelor and master’s degree from BSU in 1967 and ‘71, respectively. During his time at Ball State he enjoyed a successful playing career lettering three years and earning All-MIVA honors two times. During his senior year, Ball was chosen as team captain and Most Valuable Player. After leaving BSU, Ball took a teaching position at New Haven H.S. before moving to Paul H Harding High School in Fort Wayne where h led the boy’s team he to three Indiana Volle leyball Coaches Ass sociation Champions ships. Coach Ball and h wife, Sandy, have his th three children, Lloy, A Amy, and Jana. They h have four grandchild dren: Caden, Dyer, Jam mison, and Mya.

Season Preview Heading into his 29th year of coaching collegiate volleyball, IPFW head coach Arnie Ball has his work cut out for him. The 2009 team returns two starters from a team that lost seven seniors; one of the biggest personnel losses in program history. Of those seven seniors were a group of decorated and accomplished players who earned AVCA All-American, NCAA Finals All-Tournament, All MIVA Conference First and Second Team, MIVA All-Tournament Team, and MIVA All-Academic Team accolades over the course of their careers. Despite its youth, this year’s team has a lot to look forward to. “I guess in the old days they called this the youth movement huh?” Coach Ball smiled as he reflected. The 2007 AVCA and Volleyball Magazine Coach-of-the-Year searched for more words to describe this year’s squad. “I don’t know quite how else to say it,” Ball said, “We don’t have many veteran players who have played a lot.” That said, the Mastodons welcome 12 new faces to a team that returns nine. Of the newcomers, three are upper-class transfers, five are true freshmen, and four will red shirt this year. “It’s certainly going to be a season where we hopefully grow and develop as the year goes along just because of our youth,” Ball said. “We’re not starting off [the season] at the same point we have been in the last couple years. It’s just a matter of how quickly the freshmen become sophomores, and the sophomores become juniors.” Talking about tenured, the oldest ‘kid on the block’ is fifth year senior Mike Morici. After struggling with a seasonending injury in 2007, Morici still has a lot to offer the Mastodons in his final goaround. “He works unbelievably hard,” Ball said of Morici. “He’s quick and does a lot 4
of things people don’t realize. He’s fun to coach and have on our team.” Competing for time on the defensive back line is Matt Pliske. This is Pliske’s junior year, and he, like Morici has Final Four experience. Deciding on a leading libero could be a match-by-match decision for Ball. “Each libero has special characteristics that are positive when you put two and two together,” Ball said. “Matt’s a better passer than Mike is and Mike’s a better defender than Matt is, so it depends what our needs are. We’re actually able to take both of them and use them in a serving sub position and let them play across the back row which is not an advantage we’ve had in the past.” A year ago, Pliske led the ‘Dons in digs with 234 digs (2.46 digs per set), which is good for eighth best in IPFW record books. Ball looks for more of the same this season. “He’s just solid,” Ball said. “Consistently solid and has great leadership skills, he’s a great kid and student, doing some great things on and off the court. He’s just a solid individual.” IPFW’s other two seniors will have different things to offer the Mastodons this year.
Matt Pliske
Mike Morici Marcus Dos Santos and Kevin Goncalves will both be in their first full year with the ‘Dons in ’09. Goncalves played in six matches for IPFW last year in a reserve role each time. Dos Santos, a transfer from Mercyhurst, will see his first action this spring. “He’s got a canon for an arm,” Ball said. The Mastodons will look to their younger leadership often as well; players such as Corey Stewart, Oliver Kook and Darryl Shank come to mind. “Those three are the leaders right now,“ Ball commented. “It’s interesting because we also have two liberos that have both led us to the NCAA finals, but it’s really hard for them to be team leaders because of their playing time and the type of position they play.” Kook brings a dominating middle blocking presence to a team which, more recently, is accustomed to outside offense, and will be counted on tremendously for offense this season. “Oli,”’ as Ball refers to him, “hits the ball really hard and works hard everyday. He’s the total package and has the most experience.” Due to playing in Germany before coming to IPFW, Kook only has two more years of eligibility after playing his “freshman season” last spring. Corey Stewart will be counted on tremendously for experience and depth at the setter position; however Stew-

art brings more to the court than good sets. “Corey’s smart and very athletic,” Ball said. “He’s been plagued by injuries the whole time he’s been here, but he’s the kind of player I’d want to be a coach with us. If he’s not setting, he’s coaching the setters.” Also an offensive threat, Darryl Shank brings experience at outside to a team that needs it. Shank played in 21 matches last year and nailed 39 markers. When asked his opinions of Shank, Ball simply said, “untapped potential.” Other upperclassmen like junior Nathaniel Berg, and sophomore Ben Duckworth will need to be ready to play big roles once the season starts. Berg has a chance to play a significant amount this year and Ball has taken notice. “He’s really quick off the floor, works incredibly hard, and has a lot to prove,” Ball said. “There’s a big opportunity for him to play this season and he wants to take advantage of it.” Duckworth is in the same category. “Ben has a great arm and a good jump,” Ball said. “He could really help us.” The rest of the 2009 squad is a plethora of newcomers. Jonathan Meyer was a red shirt last year but has a lot to prove this season.
Garrett Bitter, Patrick Blubaugh, Eric Tomek and Chris Brigson will all redshirt this season for the Mastodons. Ball is excited about the progress his young players are making and the impact they could have down the road. “This class has unlimited potential,” Ball said. “The whole group has unlimited potential to be great sophomores and juniors. By that point they’ll be pretty darn good.” This season the ‘Dons play a total of 26 matches, including 16 at home. They begin the season playing Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras twice. IPFW also plays the defending national champion (Penn State) twice during the regular season, as well as Long Beach State, and Brigham Young during the Long Beach State University Tournament held in Long Beach, CA., March 13-14. “I’m happy with the schedule,” Ball said. “We’ve got 16 at home. I think with some teams that we can compete with relatively well early. Hopefully we will find success on the court and mentally so they can develop.” With former MIVA member Mercyhurst cancelling in its men’s volleyball program in the off-season, the MIVA now features six teams, all equally competitive. “On paper the top four teams are pretty strong,” Ball said. “Lewis could be really good. Loyola and Ohio State will both have a lot of good returning players and Ball State is right there with them. We’ve always been in the role of the underdog and is fits us pretty nicely this year.” Time will tell the story of this season as the young ‘Dons will look to bounce back from a sub .500 season in 2008 and return to the upper-echelon of the MIVA Conference as well as the national scene.
2009 SEASON PREVIEW
Oliver Kook
“Jon is somebody who has good volleyball knowledge,” Ball stated. “He’s someone that has continued to grow in his position. I like the ability he has on the court understanding the game.” The rest of the freshman will be counted on often. Dan Mader, Ivan Matos, Eric Hardek, Phil Peterson, and Corey Frain are all freshmen that will look to contribute this year. Mader, from Lombard, IL., has a good chance to see significant time in the setter position. “Dan’s a rookie setter,” Ball said. “He’s talented, but raw. He’s learning, but he needs to be on the fast track because he might start.” “Ivan Matos comes to us from Puerto Rico,” Ball said. “He’s got a really good arm; and an offensive-minded game. He just likes to play the game.” Other freshman like Hardek and Peterson could contribute immediately. “Hardek is a tenacious competitor,” Ball said. “He’s got a good left-handed arm, and is also a good blocker.” Peterson, one of the tallest players on the team, is a freshman that could make an instant impact. According to Ball, Peterson has untapped potential. “He has a potential to be the next star of the MIVA.” Frain, a middle blocker, is another true freshman that also has a great arm and good jump.

THE MIVA CONFERENCE
Now in its 48th year of collegiate volleyball competition, the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, has undergone numerous changes. In the spring of 1961, 10 schools met in East Lansing , Michigan, and formed the MIVA. The original schools were Ball State University, Earlham College, Michigan State University, Lansing College, Ohio State University, Wittenberg College, George Williams College, and the Detroit Institute of Technology. The MIVA was the first organization of its kind in the Midwest, and its primary function was the organization and promotion of collegiate volleyball. More than 40 schools have since competed in the MIVA, either on the varsity or club level. The MIVA currently has six members: IPFW, Ball State, Ohio State, Lewis, Loyola, and Quincy. Each school is required to play the other MIVA members twice during regular season play. There are no requirements for interleague competition. Traditionally, the winner of the MIVA Tournament has represented the league at the NCAA Final Four.

The month of August during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China was unlike any other for former IPFW setter Lloy Ball, who’s sets led his USA team to a gold medal. Its first in over 20 years. The journey was not easy however. Below is a match-by-match look at Lloy’s 2008 Olympic gold medal quest. 8/10 -- The United States Men’s Volleyball team looked like they would sweep past Venezuela in their opening match of the Olympic Games, but an injury to Lloy Ball and some inspired play by the Venezuelans caused the Americans to dig deep for a five set win. 8/12 -- Team USA shook off a sluggish start to top Italy, 3-1 and improve to 2-0 in Pool A competition on Tuesday in men’s Olympic volleyball action. 8/14 -- The United States Men’s Volleyball Team is now the only undefeated team in Pool A, following a 3-1 win over Bulgaria Thursday at the Capital Gymnasium. 8/18 -- IPFW’s Lloy Ball had 15 assists as the U.S. men’s volleyball team swept Japan, 25-18, 25-12, 25-21, Monday at Beijing’s Capital Indoor Stadium to finish 5-0 in pool play. 8/20 --The U.S. men’s volleyball squad survived perhaps its toughest match yet Wednesday night as it came from behind to defeat a talented Serbian squad 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, and 15-12). 8/22 -- The United States men’s volleyball team took the final steps to Olympic glory Friday afternoon, winning yet another five-set thriller against Russia 3-2 (25-22, 25-21, 25-27, 22-25, and 15-13). 8/24 -- Team USA defeated the defending Olympic champion Brazil Sunday afternoon to claim the men’s indoor volleyball gold medal 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23). Ball had an impressive match totaling 21 assists, 10 digs, two kills, a block and a service ace in his fourth trip as an Olympian.
8/28 -- Fort Wayne, IN -- Ball, pictured above with Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, received a grand homecoming in front of hundreds of his Fort Wayne bretheren, and was given the prestigious honor the day named for him.
“I’m very excited for him, for our family, and for our program. It’s very rare anyone gets a gold medal.” -Coach Arnie Ball
