HEAD COACH ARNIE BALL Arnie Ball is in his 32nd season as head coach of the IPFW men’s volleyball team. One of the longest tenured and most well-respected coaches in collegiate volleyball, Ball has amassed over 500 career wins and has filled a trophy case with honors from around the world. With a resume that includes six trips to the NCAA Final Four, six regular-season MIVA Championships and rosters dotted with All-Conference, AllAmerican and U.S. Olympic team selections, Ball’s time in Fort Wayne has pushed IPFW to the forefront of collegiate men’s volleyball. IPFW’s best national finish under Ball came in 2007, as the ‘Dons took home a National Runner-Up trophy, falling 3-1 to UC-Irvine in Columbus, Ohio. For the storied season, Ball was named both the AVCA Division I-II National Coach of the Year and Asics/ Volleyball Magazine Coach of the Year. In addition to the Runner-Up season, Ball has led teams to fourth place finishes in 1992 and 1994 and third place finishes in 1991, 1996 and 2006. Fifteen players have been named AVCA All-American, six have been honored as the MIVA Player of the Year and two have gone on to play in the Olympics. The Mastodons men’s sideline isn’t the only one that Ball has roamed during his thirty year tenure. Following a successful player career at Ball State, Coach Ball began his coaching career at Fort Wayne’s Harding High School, where he led the Hawks to three Indiana Volleyball Coaches Association Championships. In 1981, Ball made the move to IPFW, taking the helm of both the men’s and women’s programs. At the helm of the women’s team, IPFW captured four Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) championships and earned bids in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1987 and 1988. He wrapped his eight-year women’s team tenure with an overall record of 231-102 (.693). During this time, Ball enjoyed a handful of national appointments to US Volleyball coaching staffs. In 1983, Ball served as head coach of the North squad at the National Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo. He took the helm of squads in the Olympic Festival in 1987, 1993 and 1994, capturing a gold in 1994 in St. Louis. In 1985, Ball served as an assistant coach for the World University Games’ US men’s team in Kobe, Japan and in 1988 was the director of the USVBA Junior Elite Camp in Boulder, Colo. In 2000, Ball had the prestigious honor of serving as a scout for the U.S. National Team, selecting the team for the Olympic Games held in Sydney, Australia. Ball’s international coaching career was capped off in 2003 as USA Volleyball appointed Ball as the head coach of the U.S. Team in the World University games. Ball rallied the young team to a number of impressive wins, including a five-set victory over France, clinching a bronze medal. Despite the world travels that Ball has enjoyed in the sport, his focus has always remained a stronghold in the Fort Wayne community. In 2005, Ball was presented with the prestigious Hilliard Gates Achievement Award for his lifetime accomplishments and contributions to the sporting community of Fort Wayne. Coach Ball and his wife, Sandy, have three children, Lloy, Amy and Jana. They reside in Fort Wayne.

COACHING STAFF Former IPFW standout middle blocker, Ryan "Rock" Perrotte, returns for his tenth season as IPFW men's assistant volleyball coach. During his tenure, the Mastodons have reached a national title game, made two NCAA Final Four appearances and won two MIVA championships. He has coached three All-Americans and 14 All-MIVA selections. A proud native of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Rock came to IPFW in the fall of 1995 and was a four-year starter at middle blocker for the 'Dons. Perrotte's single-match hitting percentage record set against Ohio State in 1999, stood for 11 years until Oliver Kook's topped the mark with an .875 performance against Lewis in 2010. In Rock's senior season, he was named to the All-MIVA Second Team, leading the 'Dons to a 23-4 overall record, a MIVA conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Final Four.

RYAN PERROTTE 10TH SEASON

In four seasons, Perrotte competed in 345 total sets, posting 681 kills, including three seasons of a hitting percentage greater than .350. His .405 hitting percentage as a senior is still one of the best marks in IPFW history. He finished his career at IPFW ranked third in career blocks with 429 and eighth in career digs with 579. In 2006, Rock was an All-America Selection at the US Adult Open Championships in New Orleans. In addition to his coaching duties, Perrotte aids in the planning of practicing, preparing scouting reports and strategic match plans, match analysis (statistics), daily administrative duties and recruiting. A graduate of IPFW, Perrotte received a master's degree in professional communications and a bachelor's degree in business accounting. Rock has been a sports broadcaster since 1999 for the College Access Channel, IPFW Athletics internet broadcasts and ESPN Radio, providing outstanding play-by-play and insightful color commentary. Perrotte currently resides in Fort Wayne.

In his seventh season as a part of the IPFW staff, Thornburg is in charge of the day-today managerial activities of the men's volleyball program. A native of Nappanee, Ind. and graduate of Northwood High School, Thornburg is a general studies major at IPFW.

JEREMY THORNBURG 7th SEASON

COACHING STAFF Mark Franke has been involved with the IPFW men’s volleyball team in official and unofficial capacities since the team’s formation in 1981. Since 1989, Franke has been a volunteer assistant coach with the team and has been part of all six of IPFW’s NCAA Final Four appearances. He has no volleyball experience or background, having learned the sport on the IPFW bench, and takes pride in being known as the most volleyball-ignorant coach in the NCAA. Still, Franke is an integral part of IPFW’s winning strategy because of his unique ability to record and analyze an opponent’s tendencies throughout the course of a match, and then predicting the next play they will run. He is well known across the country for the giant, six-sheet clipboard he uses on the bench, lovingly named El Guapo (see left) and not so lovingly carried by a freshman player when the team travels. He is quite popular with the players, but only because he distributes the team’s meal money on the road.

MARK FRANKE 23rd SEASON

A 1973 graduate of IPFW with a major in economics, Franke has been employed at IPFW for the past 33 years. He currently serves the university as associate vice chancellor for enrollment management, a subject he knows even less about than volleyball. Franke has also earned two master’s degrees in business at IPFW. Coach Franke met and married his wife Tommy while they were undergraduates at IPFW. Even so, he still encourages young people to go to college. The long suffering Mrs. Franke, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from IPFW, is principal and 2nd grade teacher at Ascension Lutheran School and serves as official scorekeeper for both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams. They have two adult children who broke their father’s wallet by attending colleges other than at IPFW and their mother’s heart by moving out of state. Both have redeemed themselves, however, by providing grandchildren who are now regular recipients of their grandmother’s credit card largesse.

A new, but familiar face on the IPFW sideline, Nate Kitrush returns to his alma mater from Penn State, where he served as Director of Volleyball Operations for the Nittany Lion women’s squad. A graduate of Fort Wayne’s Northrop High School and 2008 IPFW graduate, Kitrush played one season for the Volleydons before moving over to the managerial side. Kitrush’s coaching career also includes a volunteer stint with the Purdue Boilermakers’ women’s team. He resides in Fort Wayne.
