Men’s Basketball Season Outlook
The Tradition Begins The tradition begins as the Mastodons enter the first season of Division I men’s basketball. Last year IPFW concluded its final season at the Division II level of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Mastodons finished the season 7-23 overall, and 4-15 in the GLVC. “We’re committed to developing a long-term respect for our program,” Noll said. “Our players understand there will be new challenges and expectations to compete at a higher level this season. They want to maintain a pride in IPFW.”
The Backcourt The focus of this year’s team will turn to a talented group of guards. The Mastodons have three starting guards returning, with point guard DeAngelo Woodall, combo guard Brad Noll, and off guard Nick Wise. Each brings a different strength to the court and should give IPFW a strong first year of Division I competition. The Mastodons picked up two transfers in Leigh Batts from Milwaukee Tech and Terry Collins from Appalachian State University. “Batts has a good long-range shot and is very explosive to the basket,” Noll said. “We have Collins from Snider High School in Fort Wayne who will have to sit out the first couple of games, due to NCAA transfer rules. Collins is just physically strong.” IPFW has leading scorer Nick Wise back at the wing position. He averaged 18.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game last season while starting all 30 games. During the last 16 games, he averaged 19.7 points and shot 44 percent from the field. Brad Noll averaged 14.6 points per game while shooting 112-141 (.794) from the free-throw line. Woodall is the consummate point guard—not flashy and, more often than not, doing the right things at the right time. He averaged 7.4 points and 4.8 assists per game last season in starting all 30 games. Transfer Jeremy King from Owens Community College and sophomore Keion Henderson will add more strength to the wing position. The Mastodons’ wildcard this season could be the potential of Indiana All-Star sharpshooter freshman Ric Wyand.
The Front Court IPFW doesn’t have a lot of returners in the front court. Sophomore Jim Kessenich averaged 6.1 points and 4.4 rebounds in 21.4 minutes per game, and shot 51 percent from the field and 57 percent from the free-throw line. “Kessenich’s strength is his soft-touch,” Noll said. “He has gained strength and has improved his food speed over the summer.” The Mastodons also have last season’s leading rebounder, Matt Shepherd. Shepherd averaged 9.3 points and pulled down 6.1 rebounds per game. “Shepherd has added some strength and size that we will need for the upcoming season,” Noll said. IPFW has a transfer in 6-10 Baboucarr Njie from West Gambia, Africa. Njie spent his first two seasons at Cincinnati State. John Watkins will also be a key player this season.“He is very athletic and talented,” Noll said. Watkins sat out last season because he transferred from Wright State University. Don’t forget about freshman Zach Reuter from Martinsville, Ind., another big man that will be called on to help contribute to this year’s team.
The Schedule The Mastodons will open the 2001–02 season by hosting Morehead State University on Nov. 16 at Memorial Coliseum. IPFW will participate in the Spartan Classic on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in Lansing, Mich. The Mastodons will open up the Spartan Classic against host Michigan State University. The team will then travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., on Dec. 4 to face the University of Michigan. Towards the end of December, IPFW will make a trip to the West Coast, where the team will play Colorado State, Montana State, Oregon State, Long Beach State, and San Diego State. The Mastodons will return to the Hilliard Gates Sports Center on Jan. 8 to face Chicago State, and then return to the Memorial Coliseum on Jan. 28 to face Oakland University. IPFW will finish its 2001–02 inaugural Division I season with five of its last six games on the road.

Head Coach Doug Noll Coach Doug Noll begins his third season at IPFW, facing the biggest challenge of his coaching career— to lead IPFW into the NCAA Division I ranks. The upcoming season will see the Mastodons play at least 25 Division I teams. Noll, who came from Spring Arbor College, averaged 21 wins or more in six seasons. Under his leadership, the team set a record of 29-7 (.820) and was pre-season ranked no. 2 (NAIA Division II). One of Spring Arbor’s winningest coaches, with a 131-108 record, Noll was selected as Wolverine-Hoosier Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1997. He led the Cougars to the NAIA national tournament in 1995 and 1997, and in 1997 finished no. 4 in the nation. Noll moved to Spring Arbor from Grace College. From 1990 to 1992, he helped Grace go from a 10-22 team to 49-17, including 32-5 in 1991–92 to win the first NAIA Division II National Championship. His combined coaching record in the 1990s is 191-141 (10 seasons) for a .600 winning percentage. Noll was also a successful player at Grace after transferring from the University of Wyoming. He was a two-time NAIA All-American, and despite playing just two-and-a-half seasons, is fourth on Grace’s career scoring list with 2,250 points. Between 1976 and 1978, he stepped up to the free-throw line more often than any other collegian. He also found the net more times than anyone else, connecting with 654 of 741 free throws for an impressive 88 percent while averaging 27.7 points per game. Considered an excellent teacher by his peers, Noll has conducted clinics and camps throughout the United States and in 10 European countries. In 1990 he produced a free-throw shooting video. In addition, Noll has coached at Malone College in Canton, Ohio, and at South Adams High School in Berne, Ind.

2000–01 Season: Wise led the Dons in scoring last year at 18.2 ppg. He had a high of 34 points against Southern Indiana, 28 points vs. Quincy, and 25 points against both Ferris State and Indiana Tech. He also scored 22 against Division I Ball State. Wise led the Dons and the GLVC in three-point baskets with 93 in 231 attempts while shooting 40 percent from the perimeter. He had seven three-point baskets vs. Southern Indiana and 6 threes in five other games. Wise started all 30 games for the Mastodons and played the second most minutes on the team at almost 33 minutes per game. Wise married LeAnn Diruzzo this past July. 1999–00 Season: Wise’s first year at IPFW, after transferring from Ball State, was a success in every way. Wise started nearly every game for the Dons and scored 398 points on his way to a 14.7 points per game average. Wise’s high game was 32 points vs. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. This game and the previous game earned Wise Player of the Week in the tough GLVC. Wise had a high in rebounds vs. Ferris State with 12 and averaged 4.4 rebounds per game for the year. Before Coming to IPFW: Wise, a sophomore transfer from Ball State, has enjoyed much success on the court. In high school, Wise averaged 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. He took the team to Final Eight and twice to SemiState. He had a career record of 89-10. Wise was second-team All-State his senior year, three-time All-NCC, and was selected to the North-South All-Star game. He was first-team All-State Tight End and three-time AllNCC, both in football. He also took the baseball team to the Final Eight once and to Semi-State twice as a first baseman. Coach Noll on Nick Wise: This is Wise’s third year at IPFW. As one of two seniors on this team, he will be counted on for leadership on and off the court. Wise has a great work ethic, and will help the younger players develop a mental toughness and will teach them what the coaching staff expects. We are expecting a big year from Wise in minutes played and in the scoring department. He will be graduating this spring from Purdue University. Shepherd played briefly at Hope College before transferring to Muskegon Community College and Coach Gene Gifford. While at Muskegon, Shepherd scored 14 points per game and pulled down 6 rebounds per game. A smart and fundamental player, Shepherd will bring leadership and strength and rebounding to the Mastodons’ front line. Shepherd was first-team All-State in high school. Coach Noll on Matt Shepherd: Shepherd responded to our program with an attitude and effort second to none. He will be a key ingredient to our success. Shepherd, who is a pre-law major, had a 2.7 GPA the first semester and came back with a 3.7 GPA the second semester. Shepherd has gone from 225 last season to 245 this year with a “big time” work ethic in the weight room. He will need to be physical for us, using all five fouls each game.

Coach Noll on Brad Noll: It is sometimes a double-edged sword to coach your own child in intercollegiate athletics, but it has been a privilege to coach my son on the collegiate level. I can honestly say that there is so much more positive on my end then negative. Brad is an extremely hard worker and understands the game very well. What he lacks in size, he makes up with intelligence, heart, and great desire. He has shown, during our three Division I games in the last two years, that he can compete. I’m looking forward to his next two seasons. Keion DeWayne Henderson Gary, Ind. East Chicago Central Bobby Miles
2000–01 Season: Henderson played in 24 games last year and averaged about 15 minutes per game. He scored at a 5.2 ppg clip and pulled down almost 3 rebounds per game. He had 6 rebounds against both Indianapolis and Southern Illinois. 1999–00 Season: Henderson struggled with a back injury that kept him sidelined and was a medical red-shirt his freshman year while academically being a sophomore. Henderson is very athletic and will help shore up the wing position. A great shooter with a soft touch, he needs to become more physical in and around the basket to compliment his overall game. Henderson will attend seminary after graduation. Prior to IPFW: While in high school, Henderson averaged 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. He was a Hoosier Lottery All-Star his senior year and won four varsity letters, and was a Who’s Who in Sports. Business John Robert Watkins Hamilton, Ind. DeKalb High School Cliff Hawkins
2000–01 Season: Watkins sat out as a red-shirt last season and practiced with the team the entire year. Before Coming to IPFW: Watkins transferred into IPFW from Wright State University. A McDonald’s All-American nominee in high school, Watkins led DeKalb with more than 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. He was first-team AllConference in the Northeast Hoosier Conference his junior and senior years. Watkins was a member of the News-Sentinel Fab 5 and of Hoosier Magazine’s top 40 workout. He led Wright State in scoring twice in the first five games in 1999–00 with 18 points each. Watkins will bring leadership and a Division I flavor to the Mastodon squad. Coach Noll on John Watkins: Watkins has the ability to be a “big time” player in our program, if he will concentrate on doing the little things. He has to step up his defense and see the floor. He has great range and, at 6-8, can play the two, three, and four spots. Watkins rebounds very well for us and has gained about 25 lbs. in the last 15 months. If he works hard on the weaknesses of his game, the sky is the limit.

Jim Kessenich
No. 50 Ht. 6-10 Wt. 227 Sophomore Major: Full Name: Hometown: High School: High School Coach:
Mechanical Engineering James Kessenich Pewaukee, Wis. Memorial Catholic High School John Burns
2000–01 Season: Kessenich played in all 30 games for the Dons his freshman year and started 26 of those games. He averaged 6.1 points and 4.4 rebounds in almost 22 minutes per contest. He shot 51 percent from the floor and led IPFW with 12 blocked shots. Kessenich’s high games came against Southern Indiana with 16 points, 15 against both Southern Illinois and Indianapolis, and 12 vs. Quincy. He also had 9 rebounds vs. Kentucky Wesleyan and 8 against Southern Indiana. Before Coming to IPFW: Kessenich enters his freshman season with a lot of potential to help IPFW improve its interior defense and rebounding. He spent much of his senior year in high school getting back to form after a car accident sidelined him for most of the season during his junior year. As a senior, Kessenich knocked down 12 points per game and led his team with 8 rebounds. An honorable mention All-Conference player, Kessenich looks to get bigger and stronger for the Mastodons. He finished his high school career with a 4.1 GPA. Coach Noll on Jim Kessenich: Kessenich took a big first step his freshman season, and he matured as the season went along. I thought his games vs. Indianapolis, in which he had 15 points and 8 rebounds, and Southern Indiana, as he scored 16 points and had 9 boards, were “big time” games for him. Kessenich will continue to improve and is dedicated to a great work ethic. He is “big time” in the classroom as he finished his freshman season with a 4.0 GPA in mechanical engineering. He is skilled and will give us some good minutes at both the 4 and 5 spots.

Coach Noll on Leigh Batts: Batts was a qualifier out of high school, so he was able to transfer from MTJC after only one year. He is very athletic and a deadly shooter. As a point guard, he averaged 18 ppg last season and will give us solid scoring from the point. Batts will continue to get stronger and must use his intelligence to command control during a game. He has a quiet demeanor and will have to help our team by becoming more vocal at the point. Batts will have three years in our program and we’re looking forward to his athletic ability to help the Dons.

Due to Division I rules, Collins will have to sit out the first semester this year before playing his first game Dec. 17, when the Dons play Tri-State University. 1999–00 Season: Collins’s high school career was one of the best at Snider. He was the leading scorer in the city his senior year, an All-State performer, McDonald’s All-American nominee, top 40 workout performer, All-State in Indiana, All-SAC, All-Area, and all top 5 player in the city. Coach Noll on Terry Collins: How good does Terry Collins want to be? Ask Terry Collins. Collins has a chance to be one of the best players to come out of IPFW. He has the skill and the savvy and has become so much stronger with a great work ethic in the weight room. Collins will be able to combo for us playing some at the point and some at the shooting guard. He possesses the two key ingredients for a complete guard—strength and quickness. He will have to sit out 9 games, but look for Collins to come out strong.

Wyand was a top 32 and top 40 player, and a first-team All-State with the Hoosier Basketball Magazine. He was a two-time All-Conference selection, twotime All-County selection, and two-time MVP at Franklin Central. Wyand was a 2001 McDonald’s AllAmerican nominee and an Indiana Junior All-Star. He slammed in 35 points this year vs. Pike High School, the no. 1 team in the state. He topped that with a school record 45 points vs. Pike during his junior year. He shot more than 40 percent from the three-point range. Wyand scored 1,288 points in his career as a four-year letter winner. He was also selected to the North-South Reebok All-Star game and was selected as Who’s Who in sports. Coach Noll on Ric Wyand: Wyand is the first Indiana All-Star to play for IPFW. He is very gifted and will contribute to our team immediately. He can post up, take it off the dribble, and shoot the three with the best of them. Being very versatile, Wyand will give us minutes at the 3 and 4 positions. He is a very hard worker and has a passion for the game, but is very humble about all of his achievements. Zach Reuter
No. 40 Ht. 6-8 Wt. 225 Freshman Major: Full Name: Hometown: High School: High School Coach:
Construction Management Zachery James Reuter Martinsville, Ind. Martinsville High School Tim Wolf
Before Coming to IPFW: Reuter had a difficult year last year as a senior in high school. After missing eight games due to injury, he got off to a slow start and never really got going. Reuter averaged 8 points and 6 rebounds per game. As a sophomore, he was All-State honorable mention and averaged 13 ppg. During his junior year, he received the Most Outstanding Freshman award. He had the most blocked shots as a sophomore, junior, and senior and had the best FG percentage as a sophomore. Reuter’s high game last year was 20 points against Bedford and his high rebounds were 14 vs. Bloomington North. Coach Noll on Zach Reuter: Reuter’s best basketball is ahead of him. No doubt, he had his best years as a sophomore and junior in high school. His senior season is behind him, and now he is ready to improve every day as a college player. Reuter’s physique is observed in the weight room as he is now up to 225 lbs., which will help us bang people in the post. Only Reuter can limit his abilities, depending on how good his work ethic is and how bad he wants to succeed. Unfortunately, Reuter broke his foot during the first practice of the season. We will see if the injury responds so that we can get him back in early December or if a medical red-shirt year is in order.

City of Fort Wayne History Located within a 250-mile radius of 17 percent of the nation’s population, Fort Wayne blends a rich heritage with new dynamic growth. Three rivers are key to Fort Wayne’s development. After the last glaciers receded, a continental divide was formed. On the east side of the divide, the St. Mary’s River and the St. Joseph’s River flow toward the city and meet to form the Maumee River. On the west side of the divide, the Wabash River flows west toward the Mississippi River. The Maumee River basin and the Wabash River basin were separated by just nine miles at the summit of the divide. Fort Wayne developed on that summit, thus earning the nickname Summit City. In 1835, construction of the Erie Canal brought a wealth of immigration to the area, and by 1880, Fort Wayne had developed into a highly industrialized city. At the time, Fort Wayne was the world’s largest distributor of railroad car wheels. Fort Wayne has many other claims to fame, ranging from actors to the invention of the television and many other common household items. Actresses Carole Lombard and Shelley Long are both Fort Wayne natives. Other famous Fort Wayne natives include the founder of Wendy’s, Dave Thomas; television inventor Philo T. Farnsworth; and designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the place of origin of the washing machine, baking powder, hand-held
calculator, jukebox, refrigerator, parking meters, stereophonic sound, garbage disposals, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps. Fort Wayne is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association, and the home of the Daisy’s, the first professional women’s baseball league. The first night baseball game was also held in Fort Wayne. With a population of 203,000, Fort Wayne is Indiana’s second-largest city and offers virtually all the attractions of a major metropolitan area. It hosts two professional athletic teams, the Komets of the United Hockey League (UHL) and the Wizards of the Midwest League for Single A baseball. Fort Wayne also has 16 high school athletic programs and three collegiate athletic programs. Fort Wayne has hosted many tournaments over the past years, including the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship, Mid-Continental Conference Tournament, Vera Bradley Classic, and Mad Anthony’s Golf Tournament. Fort Wayne offers a diversity of performing arts, including the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre. In addition, Fort Wayne hosts many festivals throughout the year, highlighted by the Three Rivers Festival, a 10-day party held every July.

Hilliard Gates Sports Center and Athletic Facilities Named in honor of longtime area sportscaster Hilliard Gates, the 68,106-square-foot, tri-level Hilliard Gates Sports Center is on the northeast end of the IPFW campus. It is home to the IPFW Mastodon athletic programs, which compete in NCAA Division I. The facility features a multipurpose gymnasium with a 2,700-seat arena and three basketball/volleyball courts, a 1/9-mile indoor track built of a tartan rubber surface, five racquetball/handball courts, and the fitness center. The fitness center includes four state-of-the-art Life Fitness bikes; two Life Fitness treadmills, which have heart-rate monitors; elliptical EFX Cross Trainers; Stairmasters; Concept II rowing machines; and Airodyne bikes. Another facility highlight is the strength and conditioning room, which features a complete 15-piece Nautilus set and a spacious matted area for free-weight training. A wooden floor with mirrored walls is the meeting location of a wide variety of aerobics and dance classes. Personal training, fitness counseling, and nutrition consulting are available. Outdoor Sports Complex The outdoor sports complex is comprised of baseball, softball, and soccer fields. Teams compete on groomed and newly irrigated playing fields on the northeast side of the campus across the street from the Gates Sports Center. Tennis Courts Tennis teams play on six well-maintained and lighted tennis courts built in 1999. The courts are just north of the outdoor sports complex. Hours for the courts are from dawn to 11 p.m. The lights are activated with a geocentric timer so the lights come on at sunset or may be overridden by the Physical Plant or coach’s key. Hefner Fields The IPFW Hefner Soccer Fields are made up of 14 full-sized soccer fields. Located across the St. Joseph’s river from IPFW on California Road, Hefner Soccer Fields host numerous state soccer tournaments and the IPFW Soccer Showcase. Training Room/IPFW Sports Medicine IPFW sports medicine is directed by head athletic trainer Dan Fox, ATC/L, who is assisted by Scott Knerr, ATC/L. Fox and Knerr’s diverse backgrounds in athletic training allow for a comprehensive approach to injury management. Under the new direction of Fox, the athletic training facility has undergone many changes to better meet the needs of athletes participating in collegiate sports. The support staff includes team physicians Drs. John Pritchard and Brett Gemlick, both orthopedic surgeons, and Dr. Eric Jenkinson, a non-surgical sports medicine physician. These physicians are present or on call at all home competitions and see athletes in the IPFW training room on a weekly basis. The assistance provided by these physicians has greatly improved the level of care provided to IPFW’s athletic population. IPFW sports medicine is responsible for on-site injury evaluation, injury management, rehabilitation of athletic injuries, and injury prevention. The sports medicine staff also travels with a variety of teams to away competitions. The athletic training room is in the basement of Gates Sports Center. The training room is equipped to provide on-site treatment and rehabilitation for a variety of athletic injuries.
Head Athletic Trainer Dan Fox Under the medical direction of Orthopaedics Northeast, Fox is entering his second year as head athletic trainer at IPFW. Harvey
The Color of August
By Mary Chase Directed by Jane Purse-Wiedenhoeft Our family holiday production has enchanted audiences for years with the loveable Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend Harvey, a sixand-a-half foot rabbit. Problems quickly arise when Elwood’s sister, Veta Louise, decides to have him committed to a sanitarium because of his eccentric behavior. Veta herself, however, is mistakenly assumed to be on the fringe of lunacy when she explains to doctors that years of living with Elwood’s hallucination have caused her to see Harvey, too! Nov. 30, Dec. 1, 6, 7, 8 at 8 p.m. Dec. 2, 9 at 2:30 p.m. Special High School Matinees Dec. 5, 6 at 10:30 a.m. Williams Theatre
By Paloma Pedrero Directed by Betsy Breitenbach The Color of August is a moving and heartfelt exploration of two women’s relationship, artwork, and their relationship with the art. Tackling questions of inspiration, love, hate, and jealousy, Paloma Pedrero’s modern Spanish masterpiece uses poetic imagery to tell the story of where these two women have been and where their love-hate relationship is heading. March 29, 30, April 4, 5, 6 at 8 p.m. Studio Theatre in Kettler Hall
Picasso at the Lapin Agile By Steve Martin Directed by Jane Purse-Wiedenhoeft Picasso at the Lapin Agile, a long-running offBroadway comedy, places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian café in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Steve Martin’s first comedy for the stage, the popular actor, comic and screenwriter plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune. Feb. 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 at 8 p.m. Williams Theatre
Tennessee Williams: The Foolish Dreamer Devised and directed by Larry L. Life Tennessee Williams: The Foolish Dreamer is a gratifying and provocative portrait of the extraordinary life and career of one of America’s greatest playwrights. Five men and women play Tennessee Williams and show his immense appeal and great complexity through his poetry, quotes, anecdotes, and plays. For all who know and love Tennessee Williams, this theatrical performance reveals a fascinating personality that could be alternately tender, generous, bitchy, profound, exasperating, paranoid, or wholly endearing. March 1, 2 at 8 p.m. Williams Theatre
On the Town The New York, New York Musical Music by Leonard Bernstein Book and Lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green Directed and Choreographed by Larry L. Life It’s 1943 New York during WW II. Three sailors on a 24-hour shore leave take a carefree tour of Manhattan in search of—what else— women! On the Town features a classic Bernstein score and a lighthearted and endearing plot. The wonderful score includes blues, jazz, and ragtime with a classical structure. Using the natural exuberance of sailors, and the jazzy rhythms and syncopation of Bernstein’s music, the show features fantastic dance numbers, no to be missed.
