2002 Men’s Volleyball Season Outlook In the 2001 season the Mastodons struggled going 9-15 overall and 8-8 in the MIVA. “Last season we had no senior leadership and with the move to Division I it is hard to reload year after year,” Coach Arnie Ball said. A lot will depend on experience and leadership to guide the Mastodons to a successful 2002 season. Over the years, IPFW men’s volleyball teams always have had talent throughout their rosters. The 2002 Mastodons feature two ingredients that have been in short supply in the past: depth and height. “Every year we learn a lot. This past summer we set a goal for our players. Some have reached the goal quickly while others still need to work more,” Ball said. Once again, the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship has eluded Ball in 2001. IPFW has never won the NCAA championships, but have finished third twice and was fourth twice. The Mastodons haven’t been to the Final Four since 1999. Ball will rely on a mix of veterans and newcomers in its quest to get to the 2002 NCAA Championship at Penn State University. Many of the returnees have been moved to new positions. Here is a position-by-position look at 2002 IPFW men’s volleyball: Setter IPFW has a new setter from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, in Dennis Santiago. Santiago has been setting for only a few years and has great ball control and a passion to win. Ball said, “He is a pleasure to coach and his block ranks up there with one of our middles, Arcangel Ruiz. He is very quick and aggressive while enjoying every minute he is on the court. He will be a very exciting player to watch and coach for years to come.” Middle Blocker This year the Mastodons have two solid middles in senior Josh Sanders and junior Arcangel Ruiz. These two will be key leaders in this young team. Sanders saw action in 24 matches in 2001 and averaged 1.27 blocks per game to complement a .301 hitting percentage. Ruiz appeared in 24 matches and was second on the team with 254 kills and 102 blocks. According to Ball, “The middle is the position that concerns us the most in terms of depth. Both Sanders and Ruiz will have to be work horses on this year’s team, since we have no back-ups.” Jason Morgan who is a freshman from Plymouth, Minn., has played a lot of middle in the past but could see action at the outside hitter position. Freshman Mike Semrad, a 6-10 middle hitter, will be red-shirted this season to help on his hitting and blocking skills. Outside Hitter Jeff Ptak and Matt Zbyszewski both look to build on last year’s success. Ptak, a first-team All-MIVA, finished 2001 with 482 kills and a team-leading 1,044 total attacks in 24 matches. He proved to be a true all-around player, finishing third on the team in blocks (63) and service aces (21) while ranking in the top for kills/game with 5.88. Ball said, “Ptak is one of our most experienced players. He is a good ball-control player, passes well, and plays good defense.” He also helps keep the group loose when it’s needed.” At 6-4, Zbyszewski is the shortest at the outside position. Zbyszewski emerged as a consistent player, as the only freshman to start at the outside position last season. He also provided 55 blocks and 251 kills. “Technically, Matt is solid and probably the most consistent player for us this season,” Ball said. “His passing is outstanding, but this fall he had a setback injuring his knee. I look for silent leadership from him.” Matt McCarter is also a nice addition to the volleyball program. “Even though he has a lot of potential, McCarter will send time improving his passing and hitting,” Ball said. Opposite Hitters Freshman Mitch Dreisbach will be looked upon to provide the team with depth. Known for football, Dreisbach will see a lot of playing time this season to help improve his ball-handling skills and defensive blocking for the Mastodons. Ball said, “Dreisbach has been a pleasant surprise and, with a great work ethic toward the game of volleyball, should be a nice addition.” Libero This year we have four players who will battle for the libero position. Senior Aris Eracleous, junior Rhyen Staley, sophomore Dustin Sherman, and freshman Nick Belman could all see lots of playing time. Last year Staley was IPFW’s starting setter and will still be the back-up to Dennis Santiago. The work ethic of these four will determine who will play an important part, both offensively and defensively. IPFW will have a tough test early, opening at home against Long Beach State. The Mastodons will then play six matches at home against MIVA Conference opponents in a crucial stretch that could make or break the team. “The schedule starts out tough and does not get any easier because no teams are weak,” Ball said. “You can’t just show up and expect to win without trying. Every single match we play will be a challenge. Everybody wants to win, but if we just focus on the things we have to do day-to-day, everything else will fall into place.”

Assistant Coaches Dave Schmidlin has been an assistant coach at IPFW since 1993 and has helped the team to NCAA Final Four appearances in 1994 and 1999. Schmidlin began his coaching career in 1989 as an assistant coach with the Michigan State University men’s volleyball club for three years. In 1989, working under Sante Perrelli, Schmidlin helped bring the Michigan State men’s volleyball program to national prominence at the club level. He worked with Michigan State women’s program and coached the first Lansing Area Volleyball Association boys’ 18 and under team to a Michigan Boys’ Volleyball State Championship. In 2000, Schmidlin took a job at the University of Saint Francis as the head women’s volleyball coach. The team finished the 2000 season with a 16-17 overall record. In summer 2001, Schmidlin returned to IPFW to become the assistant coach of the men’s volleyball program. His main responsibility is recruiting coordinator, strength and conditioning coach, and academic coordinator. Schmidlin, a native of Birmingham, Mich., attended Wayne State University before transferring to Michigan State. He received a general studies degree at IPFW in 1999. Mark Franke has been involved with the IPFW men’s volleyball team in official and unofficial capacities since the team’s formation in 1981. Since 1989, Franke has been an assistant coach with the team and has been part of all four of IPFW’s NCAA Final Four appearances. Franke is an integral part of IPFW’s winning strategy because of his unique ability to record and analyze an opponent’s tendencies throughout the course of a match. A 1973 graduate at IPFW, Franke has been employed at IPFW for the past 24 years. He currently serves the university as the assistant comptroller and director of financial aid. Franke has also earned two master’s degrees at IPFW.

2001 Season Ptak was the go-to man last year with more than 450 total kills. With his fanatical presence on the court, the crowd kept screaming for more. He was named first-team MIVA as a junior. Ptak also finished the season being number one in the nation with kills per game with a 5.88 average. One of his best games was against Ball State where he had 25 kills, 4 blocks, and 14 digs. He is a captain for the second time in his IPFW career and is expected to lead this year’s team into a new era of Mastodon volleyball. 2000 Season Ptak started last season as the outside hitter position with Hector Soto. At the beginning of the season, Ptak ran into knee problems that would plague him throughout the season. He played in 91 of the 98 games during his sophomore season, had 387 kills (.302 hitting percentage), with a match high of 28 kills in a heartbreak loss at Ohio State in five games. Ptak was selected as a member of the second team AllConference in the MIVA. He is the team captain for IPFW 2001 season and will be expected to carry the Mastodons back to the MIVA finals in Quincy, Ill. 1999 Season Ptak began the season as the backup outside hitter. After coming off the bench against Ohio State in the third game of the season, Ptak earned a starting spot in the line-up. He played in 77 games during his freshman season and had 317 kills (.291 hitting percentage and 4.12 kills/game), with a match high of 29 kills against no. 1 (at the time) Lewis University, 28 kills against Ball State, and 26 kills against Lewis University in the MIVA semifinals. He had 131 digs (1.70 digs/game) (12 digs against USC) and a serving ace percentage of .34 (three service aces in MIVA semi against Lewis University). He was selected to the MIVA All-Tournament Team and named Freshman of the Year in the MIVA. Freshman Preview An extremely talented freshman, Ptak is a key to IPFW’s success this season. He is a true freshman who was a two-time New York State champion and all-state selection while accumulating 1,630 kills and 186 blocks during his high school career. In 1997, he was selected as a member of the United States Junior National Team, which traveled to Italy. Ptak comes in as a strong all-around outside hitter with an excellent vertical jump, and will provide IPFW with depth at the outside hitter position.

2001 Season Eracleous saw some playing time last year and is expected to be see more in the upcoming season. His best game last year was against Quincy with 4 blocks and 4 digs. With his ability to think quickly on his feet and to see the whole court, Eracleous will bring some significant leadership to the team. 2000 Season Eracleous will be called on to set up his game to the next level with a very young volleyball team. Last year, Eracleous saw limited playing time because he had to sit out for three to four weeks with a broken knuckle. When he was in the game, he contributed in all aspects of the game. Eracleous had his best game against Clarke College when he had 12 kills, 4 digs, and 2 block assists. With his powerful swing, Eracleous will have to help out Ptak and Zbyszewski on the outsides. 1999 Season Eracleous only appeared in 10 matches during his freshman season, seeing limited playing time behind Hector Soto, Javier Escobar, and Jeff Ptak. A very good technique player, he had a hitting percentage of .350 and a service ace percentage of .40. Freshman Preview Eracleous found IPFW on the Internet and contacted Coach Arnie Ball about playing for the team. He came to IPFW at the beginning of the 1999 spring semester after completing his military requirements. A former member of the Cyprus Junior National Team, he brings to IPFW valuable international playing experience. Eracleous is a consistent outside hitter with good all-around skills. He is quickly picking up on Ball’s and the team’s offensive systems and will provide IPFW with consistent depth at the outside hitter position.

2001 Season Sanders is part of the “duo in the middle” with Arcangel Ruiz that was able open things for Jeff Ptak on the outside last year. With his ability to fool blockers and put the ball away on a quick ball, Sanders was a big force in the offense. His big game came against Clarke College on April 7 with 15 kills, 5 blocks, and an attack percentage of .619. Sanders finished the MIVA conference season fifth in blocks per a game with a 1.41 average and 19th in hitting percentage with .294 average. With his court sense improving more every year, expect good things from him in his senior year. 2000 Season Sanders shared time at the middle hitter position last year with Arcangel Ruiz. This season you will see Sanders and Ruiz running the show in the middle. Sanders will be called upon to help make the Mastodons more diverse in the middle. In 2000, he had his game against Rutgers-Newark delivering 14 kills, 2 digs, and 1 assist. This year, he will have to play big in the middle to capture the starting spot. 1999 Season Sanders appeared in 16 games during his freshman season. He had a hitting percentage of .355 and a match high of five kills in a game against George Mason. A back-up middle hitter, he was one of the best athletes on IPFW’s team this season. A great shot maker, he quickly learned Coach Ball’s system and was a key player for IPFW off the bench. Freshman Preview Sanders, a true freshman, was selected All-Conference and All-County in his senior year of high school. He was also chosen to the All-Conference All-Academic Team throughout high school. He led his club team to a third-place finish at the United States Junior National Championship Tournament in 1998. Sanders comes to IPFW as a middle blocker with solid offensive and blocking skills. Sanders will provide IPFW with needed depth at the blocker position.

2001 Season Ruiz is part of the “duo in the middle” — with Josh Sanders — that contributed to the success of last year’s season. As a sophomore, Ruiz had a court sense that most players don’t acquire until their senior year. That enabled him to make many great saves out of broken plays and put the ball away. Ruiz had a team high of 12 blocks in the game against Ohio State. His best game was on March 9 against University of California Santa Barbara where he had a total of 22 kills, 10 digs, and a .436 hitting percentage. Ruiz finished the MIVA season with an 18 standing in hitting percentage at .297 and eighth in blocks per a game with 1.31 average. 2000 Season Ruiz saw lots of playing time as a freshman in the middle hitter position. He was the key person to go to if the outside hitters were being stopped and could finish with raw power. Ruiz is very athletic and can play nearly every position on the court. When you hear the term “man in the middle,” Ruiz comes to mind. Having had 101 block assists and 17 block solos he is a true man in the middle. Ruiz had one of his best blocking games on Feb. 25, 2000, against Ball State, where he put on a display with 11 total blocks. His game high for kills came against Clarke College when he put down 15 kills. Freshman Preview Ruiz is a true freshman who played volleyball at Colegio San Augustin High School in Puerto Rico. Ruiz was three-time All-Team and captain for two years in high school. While playing volleyball, Ruiz also competed in baseball and basketball. Ruiz hopes to eventually play volleyball professionally after his intercollegiate career at IPFW.

2001 Season Staley was thrown into the starting setting position last year with big shoes to fill after Chris Gisslen graduated. He was able to step up to the plate and deliver way beyond what everyone projected. Staley had a season high of 71 assists vs. Lewis University on Feb. 10. He achieved game highs in both Findlay and Clarke College matches with 10 total digs. Transfer Preview Staley is a sophomore setter who transferred from Rutgers-Newark in fall 1999. Staley did not compete last season, but will try to gain the setter position for this year’s Mastodons squad. He was All-Conference two years and All-State his senior year of high school. Staley also played club volleyball throughout his high school career. He plan to earn his degree in secondary education and one day teach and coach at the collegiate level.

2001 Season Zbyszewski saw a great deal of playing time as a freshman in the outside position. He was able to learn the offense quickly under Coach Ball’s guidance and patience. Recovering from off-season ACL surgery, Zbyszewski worked hard in rehab and will be in top form for the first game of the season. With his drive and love for the game, he will become one of the go-to players this year. His best game last year was on March 3 vs. Loyola-Chicago where he had 25 kills, 7 digs and a .319 hitting percentage. With a total of 251 kills as a freshman, Zbyszewski will ensure that number goes up and up with each year. Freshman Preview Zbyszewski is a 6-4 outside hitter from Toronto, Canada. Zbyszewski played volleyball at Martingrove C.I. and was team captain in 1998 and 1999. He was named to the Toronto All-Star Team, averaging 6.5 kills/game and 2.5 blocks/per game. He also helped lead his team to a first-place finish at the Ontario championships. Zbyszewski will have to prepare to compete at the collegiate level his freshman season. Zbyszewski and Jeff Ptak will be the go-to guys on the outside. Zbyszewski is majoring in geology and would like to play professional volleyball in Europe.

2001 Season Sherman saw very little playing time last year but when he did get into the game, he made his presence known. In his second match of his college career, Coach Ball sent him in to serve. He went back there and served a tough low serve that the player on the other side shanked. He started jumping up and down and, in no time at all, was enveloped by fellow players in a massive hug. Sherman disappeared within the other players and the scene looked like one that occurs after a championship victory. Another play took place during the Loyola-Chicago game on March 3. The team was down two games and was able to come back and win the next two. In game five, with a match point for us with the score of 16-15, Sherman dug the ball and made it possible for Ptak to put the ball away. This game was significant since Loyola-Chicago has never beaten us on our own court and Sherman was part of what made it possible to keep that streak alive. Freshman Preview Sherman is a walk-on freshman who attended North Side High School. He was All-Conference in 1999, 2000 while named to the first-team All-State setter. Sherman was also selected to the All-State All-Star Team his senior year. While at North Side, he helped guide his team to a fifth place finish in the state tournament. Sherman is majoring in undecided pre-medical.

Since its inception in 1961, the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has undergone numerous changes. In spring 1961, 10 schools met in East Lansing, Mich., and formed the MIVA. The original schools were Ball State University, Earlham College, Michigan State University, Lansing College, Ohio State University, Wittenberg College, George Williams College, and the Detroit Institute of Technology. The MIVA was the first organization of its kind in the Midwest, and its primary function was the organization and promotion of collegiate volleyball. More than 40 schools have since competed in the MIVA, either on the varsity or club level. The MIVA currently has eight varsity members: IPFW, Ball State, Ohio State, Lewis, Quincy, Loyola, Mercyhurst, and Clarke. Each school is required to play the other MIVA members twice during regular season play. There are no requirements for interleague competition. Traditionally, the winner of the MIVA Tournament has represented the league at the NCAA Final Four.

Harvey

The Color of August

By Mary Chase Directed by Jane Purse-Wiedenhoeft Our family holiday production has enchanted audiences for years with the loveable Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend Harvey, a sixand-a-half foot rabbit. Problems quickly arise when Elwood’s sister, Veta Louise, decides to have him committed to a sanitarium because of his eccentric behavior. Veta herself, however, is mistakenly assumed to be on the fringe of lunacy when she explains to doctors that years of living with Elwood’s hallucination have caused her to see Harvey, too! Nov. 30, Dec. 1, 6, 7, 8 at 8 p.m. Dec. 2, 9 at 2:30 p.m. Special High School Matinees Dec. 5, 6 at 10:30 a.m. Williams Theatre

By Paloma Pedrero Directed by Betsy Breitenbach The Color of August is a moving and heartfelt exploration of two women’s relationship, artwork, and their relationship with the art. Tackling questions of inspiration, love, hate, and jealousy, Paloma Pedrero’s modern Spanish masterpiece uses poetic imagery to tell the story of where these two women have been and where their love-hate relationship is heading. March 29, 30, April 4, 5, 6 at 8 p.m. Studio Theatre in Kettler Hall

Picasso at the Lapin Agile By Steve Martin Directed by Jane Purse-Wiedenhoeft Picasso at the Lapin Agile, a long-running offBroadway comedy, places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian café in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Steve Martin’s first comedy for the stage, the popular actor, comic and screenwriter plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune. Feb. 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 at 8 p.m. Williams Theatre

Tennessee Williams: The Foolish Dreamer Devised and directed by Larry L. Life Tennessee Williams: The Foolish Dreamer is a gratifying and provocative portrait of the extraordinary life and career of one of America’s greatest playwrights. Five men and women play Tennessee Williams and show his immense appeal and great complexity through his poetry, quotes, anecdotes, and plays. For all who know and love Tennessee Williams, this theatrical performance reveals a fascinating personality that could be alternately tender, generous, bitchy, profound, exasperating, paranoid, or wholly endearing. March 1, 2 at 8 p.m. Williams Theatre

On the Town The New York, New York Musical Music by Leonard Bernstein Book and Lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green Directed and Choreographed by Larry L. Life It’s 1943 New York during WW II. Three sailors on a 24-hour shore leave take a carefree tour of Manhattan in search of—what else— women! On the Town features a classic Bernstein score and a lighthearted and endearing plot. The wonderful score includes blues, jazz, and ragtime with a classical structure. Using the natural exuberance of sailors, and the jazzy rhythms and syncopation of Bernstein’s music, the show features fantastic dance numbers, no to be missed.
