Season Preview
Breaking New Ground
Last year IPFW participated in its final season of Division II competition in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Mastodons finished with a 19-8 record overall and 12-8 in the GLVC. With a new coach and a new division, the Mastodons plan to soar to the top of their game. This is the first season of Division I women’s basketball in Fort Wayne. Coach Bruce Patterson and his assistants are very excited for the challenge that awaits them. A very young team, the Dons will rely on the leadership of Lindsay Werntz, Teeara Dudley, Laura Douglas, and Hilary Kulik. With only three starters returning from the 2000–01 squad, Coach Patterson will have to rely on underclassmen to compete at a high level night-in and night-out. “I have been real pleased with the work ethic of the team,” Coach Patterson said. “I am real happy with the talent level of our freshman class.” This year’s team brings back three starters, three transfers, and five true freshman. “We have a solid performer back in junior Teeara Dudley, who is one of the strongest players I have ever coached,” Coach Patterson said. Also back is sophomore Amy Gearlds. Last season Gearlds averaged 11.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Starring in the backcourt for the Dons is grad student Lindsey Werntz. Werntz greatly improved last season and is ready to take on leadership responsibilities. Werntz and junior Hillary Kulik will do the
majority of the ball handling for the Dons. Freshman Courtney Nicley will also be an outside threat for the Mastodons. “Courtney Nicley is a type of player that can drive on you or spot up and shoot the jump shot,” Coach Patterson said. In the frontcourt, freshman Kathy Hay will handle the middle with Douglas and Dudley. Douglas saw little court time last season, but is expected to be an exciting addition to the Dons offense. Dudley is the team’s leading offensive rebounder with 2.5 per game last season. The Mastodons will see the return of Amy Meyer in the swing position at mid-season. Meyer played at IPFW in 1999 and was one of the top three-point shooters for the Mastodons. Her upperclassman leadership will be necessary for the Mastodons’ success at the Division I level. IPFW’s schedule this year features only a handful of opponents that have competed with the Mastodons in the past. For example, IPFW will travel to the Bahamas to face Bucknell and then California or Lipscomb. IPFW will also compete against Ball State, Toledo, Army, Cleveland State, IUPUI, and Maryland. “I know we have to take on Maryland and it will be a challenge,” Coach Patterson said. “Don’t expect us to go up there and roll over, because we are going to give them everything we’ve got.” With the new challenge ahead, expect the upperclassman leadership to help lift the Mastodons to Division I success.

Harvey
The Color of August
By Mary Chase Directed by Jane Purse-Wiedenhoeft Our family holiday production has enchanted audiences for years with the loveable Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend Harvey, a sixand-a-half foot rabbit. Problems quickly arise when Elwood’s sister, Veta Louise, decides to have him committed to a sanitarium because of his eccentric behavior. Veta herself, however, is mistakenly assumed to be on the fringe of lunacy when she explains to doctors that years of living with Elwood’s hallucination have caused her to see Harvey, too! Nov. 30, Dec. 1, 6, 7, 8 at 8 p.m. Dec. 2, 9 at 2:30 p.m. Special High School Matinees Dec. 5, 6 at 10:30 a.m. Williams Theatre
By Paloma Pedrero Directed by Betsy Breitenbach The Color of August is a moving and heartfelt exploration of two women’s relationship, artwork, and their relationship with the art. Tackling questions of inspiration, love, hate, and jealously, Paloma Pedrero’s modern Spanish masterpiece uses poetic imagery to tell the story of where these two women have been and where their love-hate relationship is heading. March 29, 30, April 4, 5, 6 at 8 p.m. Studio Theatre in Kettler Hall
Picasso at the Lapin Agile By Steve Martin Directed by Jane Purse-Wiedenhoeft Picasso at the Lapin Agile, a long-running offBroadway comedy, places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian café in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Steve Martin’s first comedy for the stage, the popular actor, comic and screenwriter plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune. Feb. 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 at 8 p.m. Williams Theatre
Tennessee Williams: The Foolish Dreamer Devised and directed by Larry L. Life Tennessee Williams: The Foolish Dreamer is a gratifying and provocative portrait of the extraordinary life and career of one of America’s greatest playwrights. Five men and women play Tennessee Williams and show his immense appeal and great complexity through his poetry, quotes, anecdotes, and plays. For all who know and love Tennessee Williams, this theatrical performance reveals a fascinating personality that could be alternately tender, generous, bitchy, profound, exasperating, paranoid, or wholly endearing. March 1, 2 at 8 p.m. Williams Theatre
On the Town The New York, New York Musical Music by Leonard Bernstein Book and Lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green Directed and Choreographed by Larry L. Life It’s 1943 New York during WW II. Three sailors on a 24-hour shore leave take a carefree tour of Manhattan in search of—what else— women! On the Town features a classic Bernstein score and a lighthearted and endearing plot. The wonderful score includes blues, jazz, and ragtime with a classical structure. Using the natural exuberance of sailors, and the jazzy rhythms and syncopation of Bernstein’s music, the show features fantastic dance numbers, no to be missed. April 26, 27, May 2, 3, 4 at 8 p.m. April 28, May 5 at 2:30 p.m.
