Women’s Volleyball Season Outlook The IPFW women’s volleyball team begins a new season in a new division and with a lot of new faces. In 2000, the Mastodons competed in their last year of NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Mastodons went out with a 23-7 overall record and the GLVC regular-season championship. This program has a history of seniors providing the kind of leadership that is vital to successful teams. Gone from last year’s Great Lakes Valley Conference regularseason championship team is Laura Douglas (GLVC Most Valuable Player, 5.09 kills per game, 3.88 digs per game, all-time career digs and kills leader), Tami Isch (first-team All-GLVC, 13.20 assists per game, IPFW records in career, match, and season assists), and Courtney Boissenet (all-GLVC, 3.91 kills per game). “I expect our seniors (Deanna Brown, Jenny Miller, and Chrissy Miller) to be our backbone,” Coach Hartley said. “They (Brown and Miller) have played in the shadows of upperclassmen over the course of their careers, so I am pleased they have take ownership of this team.” With more depth than the team has had in the last several years, fans and opponents can expect a fluid line-up and many new faces. “It’s never easy to predict exactly where you’ll be at the season’s end,” Hartley said. “That is almost impossible this year because every opponent on our schedule is new, with the exception of Northern Kentucky and Findlay. I do know that this team takes a lot of pride in playing relentless defense. If that attitude continues, we are going to surprise some people, Division I or not.” With an enormous chunk of IPFW’s offense from last season’s 27-8 team now gone, the Dons look to serve up a more balanced offense led by newcomer Chrissy Miller (senior, Drake University transfer/Concordia High School) and Deanna Brown (senior, Blue River High School). Senior Jenny Miller (New Castle High School) and freshman Melissa Meinhart (Bedford High School, Mich.) will offer an offensive threat in the middle. | Outside Hitter | Newcomer Chrissy Miller steps into the “L1” position with tremendous power and ball control. According to Coach Hartley, “Chrissy Miller is vital to our team’s composure and personality. It seems like she’s been with us for longer than one year and difficult to imagine that she has been away from the sport, competitively speaking, for more than two years.” Amy Grove, Janelle Pollard, or Kirsta Solberg will vie for the remaining swing job. | Middle Blocker | Jenny Miller owns the IPFW all-time block assists record (242) and will be expected to contribute more offensively this fall. According to Coach Hartley, “She’s an intelligent and mature player. Her determination to overcome both knee and ankle surgery shows you what she’s made of too.” Freshman Melissa “Mo” Meinhart is an early favorite to earn the other starting nod in the middle. With excellent back court skills too, Meinhart could play all-around for the Dons. Freshmen Lindsay Brammer and Catherine Deveau will battle for playing time in the middle and provide depth at the opposite position. | Setter | The Dons are down to one setter in freshmen Lindi Bankowski. She led her high school team to a Michigan Class A state title last year with an 89-1 overall record. A first-team all-state choice, Bankowski’s transition to the college game should be smooth. According to Coach Hartley, “Lindi’s location, ball control, and knowledge of the game is far better than any freshman setter I have ever worked with. She’s adjusting to our system quickly and improves daily.” | Opposite | On top of her game now, Deanna Brown will again fill the starting opposite position. IPFW’s most gifted leaper, she’s a constant physical threat at the net. According to Coach Hartley, “Deanna showed up extremely fit. She’s fun to watch and is deceptive because of her size. She has everything in order for an outstanding senior year.” | Defensive Specialist | Sophomores Sarah Leffers and Nicole “Coco” Ray eased into starting defensive roles last year and are expected to pick up and run from where they left off. According to Coach Hartley, “Sarah has made strides physically and intellectually, and because of her overall athleticism, Coco finds a way to get on the court.” Though the Dons don’t have the opportunity to win a conference title or go to the NCAA tournament, the team has high expectations for this season. According to Coach Hartley, “We have our sights set on winning a tournament in one of our first three weekends of play and expect to win a lot of matches this year. That can happen if we continue to improve and frustrate teams with our defensive effort.”

Hilliard Gates Sports Center and Athletic Facilities Named in honor of long-time area sportscaster Hilliard Gates, the 68,106-square-foot, tri-level facility is on the northeast end of the IPFW campus. It is home to IPFW Mastodon athletic programs, which compete in NCAA Division I. The facility features a multipurpose gymnasium with a 2,700-seat arena and three basketball/volleyball courts, a 1/9-mile indoor track built of a tartan rubber surface, five racquetball/handball courts, and the fitness center. The fitness center has four state-of-the-art Life Fitness bikes; two Life Fitness treadmills, which have heart-rate monitors; elliptical EFX Cross Trainers; Stairmasters; Concept II rowing machines; and Airodyne bikes. Another facility highlight is the strength and conditioning room, which features a complete 15-piece Nautilus set and a spacious matted area for free weight training. A wooden floor with mirrored walls is the meeting location of a wide variety of aerobics and dance classes. Personal training, fitness counseling, and nutrition consulting are available. Outdoor Sports Complex: The outdoor sports complex is comprised of baseball, softball, and soccer fields. Teams compete on groomed and newly irrigated playing fields on the northeast side of the campus across the street from the Gates Sports Center. Tennis Courts: The tennis teams play on six well-maintained and lighted tennis courts, which were built in 1999. The tennis courts are located just north of the outdoor sports complex. Hours for the tennis courts are from dawn to 11 p.m. The lights are activated with a geocentric timer so the lights come on at sunset or may be overridden by the physical plant or coach’s key. Hefner Fields: The IPFW Hefner Soccer Fields are made up of 14 full-sized soccer fields. Located on California Road across the St. Joseph’s River from IPFW, Hefner Soccer Fields host numerous state soccer tournaments and the IPFW Soccer Showcase.

City of Fort Wayne History Located within a 250-mile radius of 17 percent of the nation’s population, Fort Wayne blends a rich heritage with new dynamic growth. Three rivers are key to Fort Wayne’s development. After the last glaciers receded, a continental divide was formed. On the east side of the divide, the St. Mary’s River and the St. Joseph’s River flow toward the city and meet to form the Maumee River. On the west side of the divide, the Wabash River flows west toward the Mississippi River. The Maumee River basin and the Wabash River basin were separated by just nine miles at the summit of the divide. Fort Wayne developed on that summit, thus earning the nickname Summit City. In 1835, construction of the Erie Canal brought a wealth of immigration to the area, and by 1880, Fort Wayne had developed into a highly industrialized city. At the time, Fort Wayne was the world’s largest distributor of railroad car wheels. Fort Wayne has many other claims to fame, ranging from actors to the invention of the television and many other common household items. Actresses Carole Lombard and Shelley Long are both Fort Wayne natives. Other famous Fort Wayne natives include the founder of Wendy’s, Dave Thomas; television inventor Philo T. Farnsworth; and designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the place of origin of the washing machine, baking powder, hand-held

calculator, jukebox, refrigerator, parking meters, stereophonic sound, garbage disposals, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps. Fort Wayne is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association, and the home of the Daisy’s, the first professional women’s baseball league. The first night baseball game was also held in Fort Wayne. With a population of 203,000, Fort Wayne is Indiana’s second-largest city and offers virtually all the attractions of a major metropolitan area. It hosts two professional athletic teams, the Komets of the United Hockey League (UHL) and the Wizards of the Midwest League for Single A baseball. Fort Wayne also has 16 high school athletic programs and three collegiate athletic programs. Fort Wayne has hosted many tournaments over the past years, including the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship, Mid-Continental Conference Tournament, Vera Bradley Classic, and Mad Anthony’s Golf Tournament. Fort Wayne offers a diversity of performing arts, including the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre. In addition, Fort Wayne hosts many festivals throughout the year, highlighted by the Three Rivers Festival, a 10-day party held every July.
