INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE

History of Fort Wayne Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins. With a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are two professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets and the Midwest League for Single A Baseball’s Fort Wayne Wizards, whose parent club is the San Diego Padres. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisy’s, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights.

...with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana.

Fort those who are interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre. Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of the television Philo T. Farnsworth was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.

IPFW at a glance

Born separately, decades apart, and conjoined in 1964 along the banks of the St. Joseph River, Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne offers an outstanding education at a great value. As northeastern Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning. The university offers more than 180 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs, taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics.

The university offers more than 180 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs.

IPFW continues to grow, both in numbers of students and in facilities. Spring 2002 total student enrollment was 10,625, an 8 percent increase from spring 2001. The addition of more than a dozen new soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as for members of the community. Plans for a new music building are in the works, and fundraising efforts have already begun. IPFW also plans to have student housing in the near future.

IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schools of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are dozens of student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups range from departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. There are also several intramural sports groups. IPFW receives its accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Season Outlook Arnie’s Army

Command Position

It’s back! The troops have been recruited, the ground troops have been massed, and the militia has been assembled. That’s right, Arnie’s Army has returned. Led by Commander-in-Chief Arnie Ball, the IPFW men’s volleyball team is declaring war on its opponents. “What exactly is Arnie’s Army?” you ask. In the early part of Ball’s career, his players nicknamed their team “Arnie’s Army.” The name stemmed from his drill-sergeant approach, which was how he taught his players the game of volleyball, and the grueling training regimen that they went through. Go hard, play hard, and when you are tired, keep going. This attitude is quickly catching on once more, as players, students, faculty, and staff don blue camouflage shirts pledging their allegiance to the Mastodons.

Returning for the Mastodons as setter is sophomore Dennis Santiago. “The setting position is the one that has to call a particular play not only from the physical standpoint but from the mental standpoint as well,” Coach Ball commented. Santiago, MIVA Freshman of the Year last year, stuck around for the summer to workout with Olympian setter and IPFW alumnus Lloy Ball. He has grown stronger and bigger since last season. His sparkplug enthusiasm is a great asset to the Dons.

The Mastodons are back! Coming off an 8-16 season, Coach Arnie Ball and the Dons have something to prove as they look to improve on last season’s performance. The Dons return five starters, including outside hitters Jeff Ptak and Matt Zbyszewski, both sidelined last season with knee injuries. With much of last season riding on the shoulders of underclassmen, many players gained valuable court experience. All the members have gone through an intense summer workout and preseason conditioning program that will pay dividends this season with 27 matches, 16 at home. Bigger, stronger, and quicker may be the best words to describe this year’s team.

The Front Line Senior Angel Ruiz returns to take on the role of the strong middle blocker/attacker for the last time at IPFW. After carrying the team on his shoulders as the main attacker with more than 400 kills last season and ranked 12th in the country in blocking, his leadership will be key to the defensive and offensive line for the Mastodons. Freshman Serdar Sikca from Turkey will round out the other middle position. Coach Ball calls him “the real deal.” Sikca is a well-rounded player with very good blocking skills that lends itself to the IPFW transition offense. His abilities as an offensive and defensive player will more than likely earn him a starting spot this season.

The Militia The libero, the player that wears a different uniform and plays back row only, will be critical for the Mastodons this season. The position requires the ability to pass and play defense. The leading candidate is sophomore Nick Belman. Coach Ball feels that Belman “has the right attitude” for the key role. Other players sharing time at this position are junior Dustin Sherman and freshman Jeremy Sawvel. Rhyen Staley, who can be described only as a “utility player,” will be the backup setter and will fight for outside and libero positions in the upcoming year. His hard work ethic and skills allow him to fit in anywhere in the Dons lineup.

Outside Artillery One of the team leaders this year is senior outside hitter Jeff Ptak, who is on track to break into the Mastodons’ career kill leaders. Ptak brings to the team his unwillingness to lose, and with that competitiveness he adds great ability to intimidate opponents. After being sidelined last year, Ptak is ready to get back onto the court and show what he can do in his final year at IPFW. Ptak has been a three-year starter for the Dons and his senior leadership will be crucial for the team this season. Back from knee surgery is Matt Zbyszewski who will move to the right side for IPFW. Zbyszewski has worked hard in the off-season on his skills and conditioning to regain his position on the team. With a quick arm swing and strong upper body, Zbyszewski will be one of the key players to watch in the Mastodon attack. Other players who might get some playing time at the outside position are juniors David (Isaac) White and Javier Garcia; sophomore Mitch Dreisbach; and freshmen Jason Hemphill, Angel Ruiz and Mike Daiga. This militia of players will be filling in gaps of the Mastodon offense and defense.

All in all, Coach Ball is very pleased with this year’s class of recruits. With well-rounded troops, strong ground forces, an aerial assault you won’t believe, and cunning strategic planning, IPFW is taking on all comers…WE WANT YOU…to come to the battle.

Head Coach Arnie Ball Success has been the constant that has followed Arnie Ball and catapulted his dream of building a powerhouse men’s volleyball program in the Midwest. That drive to reach the top and eventually bring the NCAA National Championship to his Division I program has led his clubs to capture or share five of the last nine Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championships, including NCAA Final Four appearances in 1991, 1992, 1994, and 1999. This year will bring a new challenge for the coach as he continues to build a winning foundation in IPFW’s quest to win the national championship. Entering his 23rd year at the helm of the men’s volleyball program, Ball has amassed a record of 369-261, which ranks him sixth on the all-time NCAA wins chart. Ball also ranks 11th on the all-time winning percentage list. Ball coached the IPFW women’s volleyball team from 1981 to 1988, winning the Great Lakes Valley Conference four times and earning a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1987 and 1988. He ended his eight-year stint with the women’s program with an overall record of 231-102. A graduate of Ball State, Ball earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in physical education in 1967 and 1971, respectively. During his undergraduate years, he enjoyed an outstanding playing career, lettering three years and earning All-MIVA honors twice. During his senior year, Ball was chosen as team captain and named Most Valuable Player. Ball has competed as a player in the United States Volleyball Association for many years, gaining numerous awards and honors, including All-American recognition in 1990 and 1991. After his graduation from Ball State, Ball took a teaching position at New Haven (Ind.) High School. He then moved to Harding High School for the next eight years, where he coached boys’ and girls’ volleyball. He led his boys’ teams to an overall record of 74-19 with three Indiana Volleyball Coaches Association championships. His girls’ teams posted a mark of 75-32 and captured one sectional title and a pair of conference crowns. Ball also has a wealth of international coaching experience. In 1983, he served as head coach of the North Squad at the National Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo. Then in 1985, Ball served as an assistant for the World University Games men’s team in Kobe, Japan. In 1987, he directed the North Team to the title at the 1987 Olympic Festival, and in 1988, he served as the director of the USVBA Junior Elite Camp in Boulder, Colo. Ball served as head coach of the 1989 World University Games team before being selected as an assistant coach for the 1991 World University Games team. In the 1990 Olympic Festival, Ball coached his team to a silver medal. He also served as the head coach for the South Squad at the 1993 Olympic Festival in San Antonio, Texas, and won a gold medal coaching the North Team at the 1994 Olympic Festival in St. Louis, Mo. Again in 1997, Ball served as an assistant coach for the World University Games team. In summer 2000, Ball had the opportunity to be a scout for the USA National Team in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. It was the first time since 1994 that Coach Ball and his son Lloy Ball, setter for the USA National Team, would reunite to try to capture the gold medal for the United States.

Assistant Coaches Mark Franke has been involved with the IPFW men’s volleyball team in official and unofficial capacities since the team’s formation in 1981. Since 1989, Franke has been an assistant coach with the team and has been part of all four of IPFW’s NCAA Final Four appearances. Franke is an integral part of IPFW’s winning strategy because of his unique ability to record and analyze an opponent’s tendencies throughout the course of a match. A 1973 graduate at IPFW, Franke has been employed at IPFW for the past 24 years. He currently serves the university as the assistant comptroller and director of financial aid. Franke has also earned two master’s degrees at IPFW.

Dennis Johnson has been involved with IPFW volleyball since 1988. From 1988 to 1992, Johnson served as an assistant coach and helped the team to two NCAA Final Four appearances. After the 1992 season, Johnson left the team to pursue other avenues. In 1998, Johnson returned to help the team in an informal capacity and then became an assistant coach again in 1999 and helped the team to another NCAA Final Four appearance. Before coming to IPFW, Johnson coached the New Haven (Ind.) High School boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams from 1977 to 1988. In 1981, his boys’ team posted a 15-5 record and finished second in the state. From 1981 to 1988, his girls’ teams had an overall record of 150-50, winning the sectional title once and the conference crown twice. He also received Coach of the Year honors once. Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in business education in 1968 and a master’s degree in 1973, both from Ball State University. At Ball State, he was a three-year letterwinner and a two-time All-Conference selection. Johnson also served as co-captain during the 1968 campaign when the Cardinals finished 33-3. Johnson has been a business law and economics teacher at New Haven High School since 1968.

Ryan Perrotte, former four-year starter for the Mastodons, takes on the role as assistant coach of the IPFW men’s volleyball team. He is orginally from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Perrotte presently holds the block assist record at IPFW with 429. He is also the current record holder for highest hitting percentage in a match (.850 vs. Ohio State, 1999). Perrotte played a key role for the team that participated in the 1999 NCAA Final Four at UCLA. He was also selected to the MIVA second-team All-Conference team. In his four years playing for IPFW, he helped the Mastodons achieve a 67-33 record. Since 1999, Perrotte has been broadcasting with College 56 providing colorful commentary and play-by-play for various IPFW athletic events. Perrotte received an undergraduate degree in accounting and is working toward a master’s in communication.

Since its inception in 1961, the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has undergone numerous changes. In spring 1961, 10 schools met in East Lansing, Mich., and formed the MIVA. The original schools were Ball State University, Earlham College, Michigan State University, Lansing College, Ohio State University, Wittenberg College, George Williams College, and the Detroit Institute of Technology. The MIVA was the first organization of its kind in the Midwest, and its primary function was the organization and promotion of collegiate volleyball. More than 40 schools have since competed in the MIVA, either on the varsity or club level. The MIVA currently has eight varsity members: IPFW, Ball State, Ohio State, Lewis, Quincy, Loyola, Mercyhurst, and Clarke. Each school is required to play the other MIVA members twice during regular season play. There are no requirements for interleague competition. Traditionally, the winner of the MIVA Tournament has represented the league at the NCAA Final Four.
