IPFW Basketball 2006-2007 he IPFW Mastodons are ready to embark upon their second season of basketball under Head Coach Dane Fife. In his first season at the helm, Fife led IPFW to a Division I record 10 wins, including an upset of Indiana State at the Hulman Center and a near upset of Notre Dame at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

T

With success comes a reputation, and IPFW has quickly built a reputation for being a difficult opponent. “We will not be sneaking up on anyone,” Fife said. “We’ve had schools now who will not schedule us because we scared so many teams last year.”

Season Preview

The Mastodons do have another challenging schedule which includes trips to NCAA Tournament teams Michigan State, Air Force, and NIT participant Notre Dame. The Dons will also host Kent State, which was in the big dance last year. The Mastodons return a good nucleus of players, including senior center Tyler Best (9.7 ppg), senior guard Quintin Carouthers (11.4 ppg), and sophomore forward DeWitt Scott (14.2 ppg). “Tyler is in the best shape of his life,” Fife stated. “He has really bought into hard work bringing results, and it shows. This is simply Quintin Carouthers’ time. I thought the last three games of last season were the best he’s played in his career. We’re just looking for him to pick up where he left off. One thing we tried to do with DeWitt during the off-season was to develop his all-around basketball game, his quickness, putting the basketball on the floor, and certainly on the defensive end. You will see a much-improved DeWitt Scott.” Also returning for his senior season is Justin Hawkins. “I thought [Hawkins] did a great job as an undersized four man,” Fife said. “He was overmatched in over 65 percent of our games, playing guys that were much taller and stronger than him, and I thought he did a great job of creating mismatches by taking guys outside. We’re expecting Justin to have a great senior year because he deserves it.” IPFW’s post men have put a great deal of work in this off-season. Junior Zeljko Egeric has packed on 20 pounds of muscle to allow him to bang more inside, and junior Armend Ademi has continued to work on his game. “Like Tyler, Zeljko has also bought into hard work, and it’s paying off for him as well,” Fife said. “Armend continues to make improvements. He’s really been playing the game for a only few years, and he continues to get better. Every player is a contributor on this team and we expect good things out of Ademi.” Also returning to this year’s team will be a pair of sophomore guards in Jakari Johnson and Kyle Savely. “We need to get to the point where we can take advantage of Jakari’s speed to push the ball up the floor and get him some easy buckets,” Fife noted. “He has great anticipation skills on the defensive end, and he’s been shooting the ball well this summer. “Kyle Savely is expected to compete for minutes at the point and two-guard spot. Kyle can do a lot of things. We need to tame his game, but he’ll improve as he matures.” Junior Demetrius Johnson is also expected to vie for playing time at the guard position, but according to Fife, he simply hasn’t been able to shake off the effects of a knee injury. “Demetrius is just having trouble getting healthy,” Fife said. “It’s hard to gauge where Demetrius is at because I haven’t seen him play basketball in a year and a half, but once he’s healthy, I expect him to contribute.” 10

Season Preview

Fife has also been busy bringing in players to get IPFW to the next level. Making their debut for IPFW in the 2006–07 season, and expecting to make an instant impact, are junior forward Jaraun Burrows, a junior college AllAmerica; junior Pat Lepper, a guard/forward combo with a deadly shooting touch; and speedy junior point guard Chris Perkins. “Pat will play the three for us,” Fife said. “He’s a very good shooter who understands the game. He’s mature both physically and emotionally and can flat out shoot it. You can expect Pat to be making some three’s right away. “Jaraun Burrows was a Junior-College All-America. We have high expectations for Jaraun. He is a bit raw, but I think he’ll overcome that with his athleticism. He’s long...he’s got a 7–1 wingspan. But the best part about Jaraun is that he is athletic and he wants to improve. “We really like what we have with Chris (Perkins). He has a general understanding of the way we play because he’s played in similar offenses in high school and college. He has a tremendous ability to get to the rim. He plays tough, he plays rugged, and he’s what we are looking for at point guard.” Fife also added a pair of talented walk-ons in Keevan Miller and Terry Jenkins. “Keevan is a tough, strong kid with a good work ethic, and Terry comes from a very good program and really understands the game,” Fife said. “Not only do we have more athleticism this year, but one of the major keys that we wanted to accomplish was to improve our basketball knowledge, and I think we’ve done that with the guys we’ve brought in,” Fife added. The Mastodons’ boss also said that his team will have a bit of a different look this year. With Best (6-9) and Burrows (6-8), along with juniors Egeric (6-9) and Ademi (6-9), IPFW will have the size it’s been looking for to improve the rebounding game. According to Fife, that will also allow the Dons to play a more up-tempo style of basketball. “We’re going to run the ball more,” he said. “Chris Perkins can really get out and push the ball up the floor. Jaraun Burrows runs like a deer. But it all starts with rebounding, and I think we’ve improved in that area. We want to find ways to get easy buckets because we didn’t get many of those last year.” All in all, Fife likes the look of his Mastodons. “I feel very good about going into this year with the types of kids and the character of our squad,” he said. “Our goal is to just keep getting better. In our last three games last year we looked like a Division I college basketball team. I thought we were outstanding. Moving into this year, we are just trying to do the same thing — keep getting better.”

2006–07 IPFW MEN’S BASKETBALL

IPFW Basketball 2006-2007

Dane Fife begins his second season at the helm of the IPFW men’s basketball program. If the 2005–06 season is any indication, the program is in good hands and moving in the right direction.

Head Coach Second Season

Fife guided the Mastodons to their best mark ever as a Division I program with 10 wins. While the Dons may have started the year a bit slowly, they made up for it with an 8-7 record from January on. Included in that win total was an impressive 54-46 upset of Indiana State at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute. Fife took over the reins on March 24, 2005, after spending two years on the staff of former Indiana University Head Coach Mike Davis. However, it was his basketball pedigree that impressed Director of Athletics Mark Pope. “Dane brings a great tradition of basketball coaching experience,” Pope said. “His father was a collegiate basketball player and coach at the University of Michigan. Both of his brothers competed at the collegiate level. He has learned from two mentors, Bob Knight and Mike Davis. He has competed in the NCAA National Championship game. In short, he is a great fit for IPFW at this stage of our development. He brings a tremendous competitive spirit and a strong belief that he can get the job done here.” As a player, Fife was the defensive catalyst behind Indiana’s 2001–02 Big Ten co-champion and Final Four team. He broke the Hoosiers’ career steals record (180) en route to league Defensive Player of the Year honors as a senior. Fife also ranks among the Hoosiers’ all-time top 20 in assists (307) and three-pointers (99), and his .478 three-point field goal percentage in 2001–02 is sixth on IU’s single-season list. Fife also holds Indiana’s single-season record for games started (37) and is tied for sixth in career games played (131). Fife was the Gary Steelheads’ first-round pick in the 2002 CBA draft and started 5 of the 34 games in which he played. He averaged 3.4 points and 1 rebound per game. “I am truly humbled by this tremendous opportunity,” Fife said upon his hiring. “My goal has always been to become a successful college coach and to help young men reach their full potential, both on and off the court. IPFW men’s basketball is on its way to becoming an outstanding program, and I will give everything that I have within me to bring it to the next level.” Fife, 27, is the youngest current NCAA Division I men’s basketball head coach. He and fiancée Blair will wed in spring 2007.

The addition of more than a dozen soccer fields alongside the St. Joseph River has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as members of the community. IPFW has new, apartmentstyle student housing, offering a more traditional university experience to students. Plans for a new music building and a medical education center are in the works. IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; the Richard T. Doermer School of Business and Management Sciences; the School of Arts and Sciences; the School of Education; the School of Health Sciences; and the School of Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are nearly 100 student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups include departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special-interest groups. There are also several intramural sports. IPFW is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. 36

Fort Wayne history of the summit city Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee River and Wabash River basins.

…with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana.

2006–07 IPFW MEN’S BASKETBALL

Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sportsminded, there are three professional teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets, the Midwest League’s Single A Baseball Fort Wayne Wizards (whose parent club is the San Diego Padres), and the United Indoor Football Association’s Fort Wayne Freedom. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisies, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights. For those interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Fort Wayne Ballet, Civic Theatre, Artlink, the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre. Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of the television, Philo T. Farnsworth, was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps. 37
