HEADCOACH

ARNIEBALL

Beginning his 30th season at the helm of the Mastodon volleyball program, head coach Arnie Ball continues a legacy on the courts of both the Mastodons and the national scenes. One of the longest tenured and most wellrespected coaches on the national scene, Ball has amassed 481 career wins and filled a trophy case with honors from around the world. With a resume that includes six trips to the NCAA Final Four, seven MIVA Championships and rosters dotted with All-Conference, All-American and U.S. Olympic team selection, Ball’s time in Fort Wayne has pushed IPFW to the forefront of collegiate men’s volleyball. IPFW’s finest national finish under Ball came in 2007, as the ‘Dons took home a National Runner-Up trophy, falling 3-1 to UC-Irvine in Columbus, Ohio. For the storied season, Ball was named both the AVCA Division I-II National Coach of the Year and Asics/Volleyball Magazine Coach of the Year. In addition to the Runner-Up season, Ball has led teams to fourth place finishes in 1992 and 1994 and third place finishes in 1991, 1996 and 2006. Fifteen players have been named AVCA All-American, six have been honored as the MIVA Player of the Year and two have gone on to play in the Olympics. The Mastodons men’s sideline isn’t the only that Ball has roamed during his thirty year tenure. Following a successful player career at Ball State, Coach Ball began his coaching career at Fort Wayne’s Harding High School, where he led the Hawks to three Indiana Volleyball Coaches Association Championships. In 1981, Ball made the move to IPFW, taking the helm of both the men’s and women’s programs. At the helm of the women’s team, IPFW captured four Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) championships and earned bids in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1987 and 1988. He wrapped his eightyear women’s team tenure with an overall record of 231-102 (.693). During this time, Ball enjoyed a handful of national appointments to US Volleyball coaching staffs. In 1983, Ball served as head coach of the North squad at the National Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo. He took the helm of squads in the Olympic Festival in 1987, 1993 and 1994, capturing a gold in

1994 in St. Louis. In 1985, Ball served as an assistant coach for the World University Games US men’s team in Kobe, Japan and in 1988 was the director of the USVBA Junior Elite Camp in Boulder, Colo. In 2000, Ball had the prestigious honor of serving as a scout for the U.S. National Team, selecting the team for the Olympic Games held in Sydney, Australia. Ball’s international coaching career was capped off in 2003 as USA Volleyball appointed Ball as the head coach of the U.S. Team in the World University games. Ball rallied the young team to a number of impressive wins, including a five-set victory over France, clinching a bronze medal. Despite the world travels that Ball has enjoyed in the sport, his focus has always remained a stronghold in the Fort Wayne community. In 2005, Ball was presented with the prestigious Hilliard Gates Achievement Award for his lifetime accomplishments and contributions to the sporting community of Fort Wayne. Coach Ball and his wife, Sandy, have three children, Lloy, Amy and Jana. They have four grandchildren, Caden, Dyer, Jamison and Mya.

ARNIE BALLlegacy endowment Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Chancellor Michael Wartell announced at a news conference this evening (Friday, Jan. 8, 2010) that the goal of raising $1 million dollars for the Arnie Ball Legacy Endowment has been reached. Wartell also announced that because the goal was met by Dec. 31, 2009, IPFW will match the donations dollarfor-dollar. “We started this campaign less than two years ago, and IPFW now has one of the few men’s volleyball programs in the country whose scholarships are fully funded from endowments. My hope is that we continue to build endowments like this one for the rest of our athletics programs. The generosity of our supporters is matched only by the dedication and hard work of Arnie Ball as he begins his 30th season as IPFW’s head men’s volleyball coach tonight and I couldn’t think of a better way to start the season than with this announcement.” Before the news conference, Tommy Bell, IPFW

Athletics Director said, “Arnie Ball is more than a legacy; he’s a legend in the world of men’s collegiate volleyball. In 2007, he was named national coach of the year by two different organizations and the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA). In that same year, he and his team gave all of us a thrill when they went to the NCAA Final Four championships and received international media coverage. Arnie has had two Olympic players come from his teams over the years, including his son, gold-medalwinner, Lloy. His teams have made six NCAA Final Four appearances in all and played in seven MIVA Championships. Twelve of Arnie’s players are in the IPFW Athletics Hall of Fame, 21 are AVCA All-Americans, and 59 are All-MIVA selections. These are just a few of the spectacular statistics Arnie has compiled in his 30 years at IPFW. I can’t tell you how proud I am to be a part of this campaign and how happy I am to have Arnie at IPFW.”

RYANPERROTTE

MARKFRANKE

Beginning his ninth season on the Mastodon sideline, Ryan Perrotte has spent much of his volleyball career in Fort Wayne. A native of Ontario, Canada, “Rock” came to IPFW in 1995 and was a four-year starter at middle blocker for the ‘Dons. Still the IPFW record-holder for hitting percentage in a match (.850 vs. Ohio State, 1999), Perrotte led the ‘Dons to an MIVA Conference Championship, 1999 NCAA Final Four and 23-4 record, one of the best in the program’s history. Perrotte holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and master’s degree in communication from IPFW.

MIKEMORICI

Mike Morici is a familiar face in the IPFW Volleyball family. A 2009 graduate and fouryear player for Coach Ball and the ‘Dons, Morici returns to the sideline as a graduate assistant coach. A libero for the ‘Dons, Morici tallied 104 digs in the 2009 season, closing out his four-year IPFW career with 884 digs. The native of Antioch, Illinois, and graduate of Carmel High School received his B.A. in Communication from IPFW. Morici resides in Fort Wayne and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in professional communication at IPFW.

Mark Franke has been involved with the IPFW men’s volleyball program in both official and unofficial capacities in every season since the program’s inception in 1981. An assistant coach since 1989, Franke has been a part of all six of IPFW’s NCAA Final Four appearances. Despite a career in volleyball that never included time on the court as a player, Franke’s ability to break down and scout opponents’ tendencies make him a valuable asset to the MastodonS. A 1973 IPFW graduate, Franke majored in economics. He resides in Fort Wayne with his wife Tommy.

JEREMYTHORNBURG

Jeremy Thornburg enters his fifth season as the manager of the IPFW men’s volleyball squad. A Nappanee, Indiana native, Thornburg facilitates all practice and scouting needs for the ‘Dons, including video scouting analysis, DataVolley computer work and statistical and equipment management. A graduate of Northwood High School in Nappanee, Thornburg was actively involved in the volleyball program as a student there as well. The son of Jay and Trudy Thornburg, Jeremy is a business/ general studies major at IPFW.

MASTODON VOLLEYBALL

2010 SEASONPREVIEW

For the second consecutive season, head coach Arnie Ball and the Mastodons enter a new schedule with a 12-15 record in the rear view mirror. For Ball’s 2010 squad, his 30th at the helm of the program, a steady mix of veteran leadership and young talent will look to break the trend of seasons’ past and return IPFW to the top of the MIVA. Leading the charge for the ‘Dons is senior middle blocker Oliver Kook. The most experienced player on Coach Ball’s roster, Kook led the squad in 2009 with 114 blocks (1.23 Blk/S) and second best on the team with 21 service aces. “We expect a great deal out of Oli,” said head coach Arnie Ball. “He’s got the most experience of anyone on our team so we expect him to do a lot for us.” The senior will be joined in the middle by one of the team’s youngest, but most highly-touted, newcomers in Rob Samp. Samp, a a 6-7 freshman from Wheaton, Illinois, was named to the AVCA First Team Boys High School All-American team in 2009. Also expected to see time in the Mastodons’ middle rotation are sophomores Corey Frain and Chris Brigson. Frain saw action in seven matches a season ago, logging six kills, while Brigson started in five matches, tallying eight kills and three service aces. The outside hitter position is stocked with a rotation of talented young arms. The pack leader is junior Darryl Shank. A second team All-MIVA selection in 2009, Shank was selected to the 2010 MIVA Preseason All-Conference squad in December, the lone Mastodon player to grace the list. Shank averaged 3.80 kill per set to lead the team in the ‘09 campaign while finishing second among returnees with 17 service aces. The London, Ontario native posted team-best in both kills (350) and total attacks (854) and will be looked to again this season as the centerpiece of the IPFW offense. Junior Jonathan Meyer and sophomore Ivan Matos will see action behind Shank. Meyer had an impressive 2009 campaign for the ‘Dons, posting 56 kills and 56 digs in 74 sets during his first full season of action. Matos played in 23 sets on the season, with 41 kills and an assist. His offseason improvement has caught the eye of head coach Arnie Ball and his staff. “Ivan Matos has played pretty well for us this Fall. We like his athleticism and the things he brings. He’s got a really live arm,” said Ball. The wild card of the group is Phil Peterson. After a successful freshman campaign in which Peterson finished with 144 kills, 57 digs, 29 blocks and 14 aces, the 6-7 sophomore fell ill during the Fall practice season. Still working his way back to full strength, Peterson could see time at both outside and opposite during the 2010 season. To crack the lineup at opposite, Peterson will have to beat

out freshman Elon Fyfield. A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Fyfield’s athleticism and leaping ability have brought a dynamic to the team that has impressed the coaching staff. “Elon is very, very, very athletic and very dynamic,” said Ball. “But he’s a freshman and he’s going to make a lot of mistakes out there. We’ll be working with him and get him right to where he needs to be for us.” Faced with the graduation of four-year libero Mike Morici, now a graduate assistant coach for the ‘Dons, Coach Ball will have the services of three young faces in the 2010 season, with junior transfer Shaun Dryden leading the race for the spot. Coming to Fort Wayne from Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California, the Texas native has clicked with his new teammates. “He has transitioned very well [onto the team],” said Ball. “He’s very athletic and does a lot of things at the libero position, with communication, passing and defense, very well. We’re real happy with him and the way he’s playing.” Also expected to see time are junior Patrick Pinto and sophomore Garrett Bitter. Freshman JW Kieckhefer will spend the 2010 season as a redshirt while he adjusts to the college game and the IPFW playing style. Sophomore Dan Mader will return to his position as the team’s number one setter. The native of Lombard, Illinois played in 68 sets in 2009, tallying 670 total assists, 63 digs and 29 blocks for the ‘Dons. A pair of seniors in Corey Stewart and Kevin Goncalves will also compete for time behind Mader. Fifth-year senior Corey Stewart will contribute most as a team leader and captain. “Corey is the most intellectual player on the team, as far as knowing and understanding the game,” said Ball. “We expect a lot from him from a leadership standpoint.” Kevin Goncalves, returns to the team after missing the 2009 season. Goncalves played in seven matches for the ‘Dons in ‘08, posting three kills and 19 assists. The 28-game IPFW schedule features a tough non-conference schedule with EIVA teams like NJIT, Penn State, Rutgers, George Mason and Saint Francis (Pa.). The ‘Dons will go on the road for a spring break trip to face off with the Roosters of the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. Arnie Ball and the Mastodons will kick off the 2010 season Friday, Jan. 8 as they play host to the NJIT Highlanders. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne.

ABOUT THE MIDWESTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE VOLLEYBALL ASSOCIATION

Lewis Romeoville, Ill.

Ball State Muncie, Ind.

Ohio State Columbus, Ohio

Loyola Chicago Chicago, Ill.

Grand Canyon Phoenix, Ariz.

IPFW Fort Wayne, Ind.

Quincy Quincy, Ill.

Now in its 48th year of collegiate volleyball competition, the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has undergone numerous changes. In the Spring of 1961, ten schools met in East Lansing, Michigan to form the conference: Ball State University, Earlham College, Michigan State University, Lansing College, The Ohio State University, Wittenberg University, George Williams College and the Detroit Institute of Technology. The MIVA was the first organization of its kind in the Midwest, and its primary function was the organization and promotion of collegiate volleyball. More than 40 schools have competed in the MIVA, either on the Varsity or Club level. The conference currently stands at seven members: IPFW, Lewis, Ball State, Loyola Chicago, Ohio State, Grand Canyon and Quincy. Each school is required to play the other MIVA members twice during regular season play. Traditionally, the winner of the MIVA Tournament, earns the right to represent the conference at the NCAA Final Four.

IPFW 70 VOLLEYBALL

It all started about 10,000 years ago… That’s when mastodons roamed the southern Great Lakes region of North America. These stocky versions of modern elephants reached heights of about ten feet at the shoulder, with tusks that curved upward that were six feet or more in length. Mastodons were browsers who fed mostly on leaves and twigs from small trees and shrubs. One such mastodon found its final resting place about two miles south of Angola, Indiana, on land that would eventually become part of Orsie Routsong’s farm. In the fall of 1968, Routsong decided to expand a small pond on his property. An excavator was hired and instructed to pile the excavated material around the edge of the pond. Several days after the excavation was finished a heavy rain storm pounded the piles of dirt. The next day, a young neighbor boy of Routsong’s discovered a large bone in one of the dirt piles. Routsong knew it was something out of the ordinary, so he called Jack Sunderman, chair of the IPFW Geology Department, to identify the bone, and to ask for advice on what to do with it. Sunderman says his first question was, “How big is the bone,” with Routsong’s answer being “pretty big, maybe 3 or 4 feet long.” When Sunderman got to the farm, he identified the bone as a leg bone of a mastodon. He told Routsong a skeleton like this would have scientific and instructional value if a large portion of it could be located. Routsong agreed, and also agreed to have the IPFW Geology Department do the excavation. Sunderman got two more faculty members, Geoffrey Matthews and Bernd Erdtmann, and several geology students to help in the project. Using metal rods to probe through the sticky clay around the pond, the team located quite a number of rib bones, vertebrae, and leg bones; but the skull and tusks were missing. After they finished going through the clay piles around the pond, the team decided to venture further out, into undisturbed ground, eventually striking a large, solid object. Sunderman says they were all amazed when

they discovered the skull of the mastodon, including the cranium, the upper jaw, and both tusks. He recalled, The skull had been buried about four feet beneath the surface, and was upside down. The two tusks, about five feet long, were still in place—projecting from the skull! The team completed its excavation, still missing several leg and toe bones. At this point, they got help from an unexpected source: the Student Government Association. That group provided funds for an additional machine excavation that would double the size of the pond. Routsong agreed with the proposition and the machine excavation continued for a few more weeks. However, only a few small scraps of bones were found. After the original contracted time for the machine excavation ended, the operator independently decided to “go fishing” for bones for a few more hours. Sunderman picks up the story, Imagine our excitement when we, the Geology Department team, learned the excavator had uncovered a second mastodon! With one of his last scoops, the excavator had pulled up the skull of a baby mastodon! Unfortunately, Sunderman says that skull was not well preserved and had parts missing due to decay. After all the mastodon bones were collected, cleaned, and preserved, Routsong agreed to have the adult mastodon skeleton placed on permanent display at IPFW (pictured below); the skull of the baby mastodon is now on loan to Science Central. So that’s how the mastodon bones came to be encased in Kettler Hall; but how did the mastodon become IPFW’s mascot? In the spring of 1970, The Communicator began a drive to come up with a mascot for IPFW. Some of the suggested choices included the Boiler-Hoosiers, Warhawks, Marauders, Frontiersmen, Pioneers, Elfs, and Hobbits. Those names and others came from student suggestions. The original plan was that students would vote on ballots published in The Communicator. At the same time

the newspaper was running sample ballots, Steve Pettyjohn, who served as the student body president in 196869, wrote a letter to the editor about the school mascot. In his letter, Pettyjohn extolled the virtues of choosing the mastodon as IPFW’s mascot: “It sounds different, strange, and even icky (as one female student put it). That’s exactly why. It’s different and yes, even strange. I’m tired of slavishly copying what Bloomington, West Lafayette, and other big schools do. And I’m tired of these high school attitudes and high school nicknames…For God’s Sakes, let’s have the courage to be a little different.” In the meantime, Indiana Congressman Mark Souder, who served as student body president in 1969-70, recalls being lobbied by the Geology Club to choose the mastodon: “…a group from the Geology Club burst into the Student Government office, led by Dr. Erdtmann and Dr. Sunderman. I know Mike Nusbaumer was involved both as a student government leader and a geology club member.” According to Nusbaumer, “Souder appointed a committee in student government to select a name (I was a member of that committee) although he was lobbying hard for the mastodon.” Souder says he’s not sure who else was on the committee, but he does recall that the majority of the committee members favored the mastodon. After some discussion on the subject, Souder says a vote was taken by the committee and the mastodon came out the winner. Souder finished his recollection with these thoughts. “History shows that the advocacy of the geology club was correct. The fast, decisive action of the elected student government—though it did not please everyone and was not a precedent that the University desired to see— has also been upheld by history as IPFW regularly scores high in any list of unique university nicknames; even in this era when everybody strives to be different. We did it decades ago.”
