INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E
director of athletics Mark Pope was named IPFW’s director of athletics in July 2001 as the university was transitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I. That transition was completed Sept. 1, 2002, as IPFW earned NCAA Division I certification — on schedule and on budget.
TM
Since that initial year, Pope has set about transforming IPFW Athletics into a program worthy of the name “Division I.” Among his accomplishments are the following: ▼ The annual IPFW Soccer Showcase was reorganized, drawing 11,500 fans in 2003 and 15,000 fans in 2004. ▼ Men’s basketball attendance increased tenfold from 2000, including the highest percentage increase of all Division I institutions in 2003. ▼ Women’s volleyball attendance tripled from 2002 to 2003. ▼ Men’s volleyball attendance was ranked third nationally in 2004. ▼ Contributions to Athletics have increased by 50 percent from 2001 to 2003. ▼ The Gates Sports Center and baseball field have undergone significant renovations. ▼ Men’s and women’s golf were added as sponsored sports. ▼ In cooperation with IPFW Alumni Relations and the Indiana–Purdue Student Government Association, IPFW’s Homecoming tradition was created. ▼ The IPFW Stomp Band was organized. With these successes, Pope has continued to focus on the student component of the IPFW student-athlete. Last year, Pope’s departmental goal of a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) was realized, as IPFW student-athletes achieved a 3.01 GPA. The IPFW softball, tennis, cross country, and track teams have earned All-Academic honors from their respective associations. IPFW Athletics graduates its student-athletes at a rate that is double that of the IPFW all-campus rate. Pope has a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from Indiana University. He has been a member of the bar of the State of Indiana for 27 years. Pope and his wife, Julie, are the proud parents of their two sons, Brent and Brad.

Head Coach Arnie Ball IPFW head men’s volleyball coach Arnie Ball reached a career milestone in 2005. Ball eclipsed the 400-career win mark. Only three other collegiate coaches have more wins than Ball, who is entering his 26th year at the helm of the Mastodons. Last year could have been one of Coach Ball’s best on the bench. Out of necessity, he put a patchwork lineup together that came within one game of making the NCAA tournament. This type of success should be nothing new to IPFW men’s volleyball fans. Under Ball’s leadership, the Mastodons have won five Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championships, produced 13 NCAA All-Americans, two Olympians, six MIVA Conference Players of the Year, and countless All-Conference Performers. Ball has also taken four teams to the NCAA Final Four, finishing fourth in 1992 and 1994 and taking third place in 1991 and 1999. In 25 years at IPFW, Ball has a career record of 411-299. In November 2005, Ball was honored by the Fort Wayne Sports Corporation. He was presented with the prestegious Hilliard Gates achievement award for lifetime accomplishments and contributions to the sporting community of Fort Wayne. 8
Ball also was the first head coach of the women’s volleyball program at IPFW. From 1981-1988, IPFW won the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) four times and earned a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1987 and 1988. He ended his eight-year run with an overall record of 231-102. Ball also has a wealth of international coaching experience.
Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1985, he served as an assistant for the World University Games men’s team in Kobe, Japan. In 1987, coach Ball directed the North Team to the title at the ’87 Olympic Festival. In 1988, he served as the director of the USVBA Junior Elite Camp in Boulder, Colo.
In 2003, USA volleyball called upon Ball to lead a young and inexperienced U.S. World University Team at the games in Daegu, South Korea. Ball’s team responded with a number of impressive wins, including a marathon five-set match against France, which clinched the team a Bronze Medal. In 1983, Ball served as head coach of the North Squad at the National 2006 IPFW MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Head Coach Arnie Ball and 1971, respectively. During his undergraduate years, he enjoyed an outstanding playing career, lettering three years, and earning All-MIVA honors twice. During his senior year, Ball was chosen as team captain and named Most Valuable Player. Ball has competed as a player in the United States Volleyball Association for many years, gaining numerous awards and honors, including All-American recognition in 1990 and 1991.
Ball also served as head coach of the 1989 World University Games team, before being selected as an assistant coach for the 1991 World University team. In 1990, Ball coached the ’90 Olympic Festival team to a Silver Medal. He was also asked to serve as the coach of the South squad at the 1993 Olympic Festival in San Antonio, Texas. In 1994, his North team won Gold at the Olympic Festival in St. Louis. Again in 1997, Ball was called upon to serve as an assistant for the World University Team. In summer 2000, Ball had the opportunity to be a scout for the U.S. National Team in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. It was the first time since 1994 that Coach Ball and his son Lloy, the starting setter for the U.S. Team, would reunite on the volleyball court.
After graduating from Ball State, Ball took a teaching position at New Haven (Indiana) High School. He then moved to Harding High School, where he stayed for eight years. At Harding, Ball was the coach of both the boy’s and girl’s volleyball programs. He led the boy’s team to an overall record of 74-19, with three Indiana Volleyball Coaches Association Championships. His girls’ teams posted a mark of 75-32 and captured one sectional and two conference titles. Coach Ball and his wife, Sandy, have three adult children, Lloy, Amy, and Jana. They have three grandchildren, Dyer, and twin boys, Caden and Jamison.

Assistant Coach Mark Franke Mark Franke has been involved with the IPFW men's volleyball team in official and unofficial capacities since the team’s formation in 1981. Since 1989, Franke has been a volunteer assistant coach with the team and has been part of all four of IPFW’s NCAA Final Four appearances. He has no volleyball experience or background, having learned the sport on the IPFW bench. However, he takes pride in being known as the “most volleyball-ignorant” coach in the NCAA. Still, Franke is an integral part of IPFW’s winning strategy because of his unique ability to record and analyze an opponent’s tendencies throughout the course of a match, and then predicting the next play they will run. He is well-loved by the players, but only because he carries the team’s meal money on the road. A 1973 graduate of IPFW with a major in economics, Franke has been employed at IPFW for the past 28 years. He currently serves the university as associate vice chancellor for enrollment management. Franke has also earned two master’s degrees in business at IPFW. Coach Franke met and married his wife, Tommy, while they were undergraduates at IPFW. Tommy holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from IPFW. She is the principal and a 7th and 8th grade teacher at Ascension Lutheran School. She also serves as official scorekeeper for both the IPFW men’s and women’s volleyball teams.
Assistant Coach Dennis Johnson Dennis Johnson has been involved with IPFW volleyball since 1988. From 1988 to 1992, Johnson served as an assistant coach and helped the team to two NCAA Final Four appearances. After the 1992 season, Johnson left the team to pursue other avenues. In 1998, Johnson returned to help the team in an informal capacity and then became an assistant coach again in 1999 and helped the team to another NCAA Final Four appearance. Before coming to IPFW, Johnson coached the New Haven (Ind.) High School boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams from 1977 to 1988. In 1981, his boys’ team posted a 15-5 record and finished second in the state. From 1981 to 1988, his girls’ teams had an overall record of 150-50, winning the sectional title once and the conference crown twice. He also received Coach-of-the-Year honors once. Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in business education in 1968 and a master’s degree in 1973, both from Ball State University. At Ball State, he was a three-year letterwinner and a two-time All-Conference selection. Johnson also served as co-captain during the 1968 campaign when the Cardinals finished 33-3. Johnson has been a business law and economics teacher at New Haven (Indiana) High School since 1968.

2006 IPFW MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Assistant Coach Ryan “Rock” Perrotte Ryan Perrotte returns for a third season as the assistant coach of the IPFW men’s volleyball team. He is originally from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. A former four-year starter for the Mastodons, Perrotte presently holds the block assist record at IPFW with 429. He is also the current record holder for highest hitting percentage in a match (.850 vs. Ohio State, 1999). Perrotte played an integral role for the team that won the MIVA championship and participated in the 1999 NCAA Final Four at UCLA. That same year, he was selected MIVA All-Conference Second Team. In his four-year playing career for IPFW, Perrotte helped the Mastodons amass a 67-33 record. Since 1999, Perrotte has been a broadcaster with College Access Channel 56, providing outstanding play-by-play and insightful, color commentary for various IPFW athletic events. Perrotte received a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and just recently completed his master’s degree in communication.

2006 IPFW MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Season Preview When we last saw the IPFW men’s volleyball team, they had just lost a four game, heart-breaker to Ohio State in the finals of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament. A win would have sent them to the Final Four, a place the ’Dons haven’t been since 1999. On top of that, it would be the last match for former NCAA All-American Matt Zbyszewski. The Mastodons could no longer count on his 500-plus kills. Things looked bleak for the Mastodons…or did they?
Jason Hemphill (6-4/Jr./Opp/North Pole, Alaska), who plays there naturally is an option. We’ve taken Steve Rogers (6-6/So./Windsor, Ontario, Canada) out of the middle and put him out there, and Vitor Oliveria (6-7/So./OH/Cardias Do Su, Brazil) could possibly play out there, so we’ve got a number of options we can play with until we find someone to step up.” Offensively, the Army has quite a bit of firepower. “Brock Ullrich (6-6/So./Winfield, Ill.) will probably start at swing two,” Ball noted. “He's the best passer on the team, and he’s got a good serve. He worked really hard this summer. He jumps better, his arm swing isn’t nearly as funky as it was, but his blocking is questionable, but so is everyone else’s.” That may be a bit of an exaggeration from the coach, because the ’Dons led the MIVA in all blocking stats in 2005. Junior Josh Collins (6-3/Jr./Bancroft, Ontario, Canada) will also provide IPFW with quality minutes. “Collins, right now, would be the number three swing off the bench. He brings such a good arm, but his problem has always been that he doesn’t pass the ball consistently, and he knows that.” Ball shared. “But once again, he is a nice guy to bring off the bench, so is Quillen and so is Nick Belman (6-4/Sr./Akron, Ohio).”
Sophomore C.J. Macias
Head Coach Arnie Ball, entering his 26th season, took a good, hard look at his roster and went out to get the missing pieces of the puzzle. He replaced Zbyszewski’s 598 kills with sophomore transfer C.J. Macias. Macias (6-4/So./OH/Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), who was second only to Zbyszeswski in the MIVA in kills, with 536, came to IPFW after the University of Findlay decided to shelve its men’s volleyball program. Ball also filled a need for a setter with transfer Colin Lundeen (6-3/Jr./Camosan College). Along with another year of experience from his current players, things look good for Arnie’s Army. “I don't know whether we are more talented or not, but we’ve got more depth than we’ve had in a long time…probably as much depth as we’ve had since 1999,” Ball said. “This is the most depth we’ve had since turning Division I. I think we are ahead of where we were when we ended last year, with our ball skills, and certainly at the setter position.” Ball plans on playing Macias on the left side of the ’Dons offense. “I’ve always been a believer that you take really athletic kids and put them on the left side, because I think you win volleyball games on the left side and not the right.” Ball explained. “We did the same thing with (former All-American) Hector Soto in 1999. I put him on the left side, because when you get in trouble, you’ve got to have somebody out there that can stick the ball, and C.J. can do that.” IPFW has a number of options on the right side. “It's kind of by committee now,” Ball added. “When we played Long Beach State (pre-season) Jerrod Quillen (6-4/Jr./OH/La Grange, Ohio) played there, he certainly is a possibility.
While the opposite position may still be up in the air, there is no doubt where IPFW’s strength lies. “I don't think since I’ve been here, in 25 years, that we’ve had three guys that can go in and at a very high level in the middle,” Ball said. Coach Ball was referring to the talented, experienced trio of middle blockers that include All-MIVA First Team selection Serdar Sikca (6-7/Sr./Istanbul, Turkey), sophomore Josh Stewart (6-11/St. Mary's, Ontario, Canada), and senior Mike Daiga (6-6/Columbus, Ohio). “I don’t know if it is because we have three middles, or if it is because it is his senior year, but Serdar has really picked it up,” Ball said. “Serdar has really matured since coming here. He is doing really well in the classroom, and we've identified him as the real ‘senior guy.’” Stewart comes off an outstanding freshman campaign, finishing 4th in the conference in blocks per game at 1.22. Ball sees no letdown in Stewart's development. “I don't think kids who have the attitude that he has end up having slumps as sophomores, or ever,” he said. “He’s still doing a great job. His biggest problem is still lack of experience, but the longer he goes, the better he gets.” Senior Serdar Sikca

Season Preview Then there is senior Mike Daiga, who is the pure definition of a “team player.” Last season, Daiga played wherever the team needed him. At times that was on the outside and others as a setter. “The nice part about Daiga is that he understands volleyball because he’s grown up with it,” Coach Ball relayed. “Unless something happens that we don’t foresee, we really believe that Mike will get a chance to stay in the middle this year and give us the depth we talked about. What a nice thing to have when you can bring a senior off the bench, with all the experience he has, and help raise the level of play. You don't get to do that very often.” There will be some stability on the back line as well for IPFW in 2006. Sophomore Mike Morici (5-6.5/Antioch, Ill.) will return after a solid freshman season. Morici was 10th in the MIVA in digs per game at 2.06. “Mike Morici has gotten better over the summer. His attitude is something you can never question. He’s so quick, and he does a lot of things that I don’t even realize until you look at the video tape and go…‘Wow.’” Senior Mike Randolph (63/Columbus, Ohio) will finally get a chance to play the position for which he was originally recruited. Forced into the setter’s roll last year, Randolph will provide Ball with Sophomore Mike Morici another one of those solid back-ups. “Randolph has always wanted to play libero. So now were in a position to allow him to train and play there, and if Mikey (Morici) is having trouble, he’s ready to go, and there is another senior. Mike (Randolph) actually handles the ball a little better than Mikey, so there is a nice trade-off with those two guys.”
fun right now. As long as the game is fun for me, I’d like to be part of it.” Ball also revealed another important reason why he's still going strong. “It’s the relationships. It’s all about those kids when they come back as alumni. Hector Soto e-mailed from Italy two weeks ago, asking me to help him get his transcripts because he wants to finish school. It's about Matty (Zbyszewski) playing in Greece and (Former MIVA Player-of-the-Year) Jeff Ptak playing in Cyprus. That is what it’s all about.” It’s also about winning a National Championship. “I voted us 5th in the conference pre-season poll,” Ball said, laughing. “Ohio State’s got (Andy) Cole and (Mark) Greaves back. We know Ball State will be a good team. I think the league will be good between us, Loyola, and Ball State. It’ll be fun, and our goal is the same as it was last year: to be ready at the end of April for a chance to play in the NCAA Championship at Penn State.”
The setter’s position had been problematic for the ’Dons in 2005 because of the unexpected departure of Dennis Santiago, but Ball has filled that need nicely with transfers Colin Lundeen and Michael Quinones (6-2/ Quaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa Bell). “It was so much fun this fall…just going to practice and knowing that people were going to stay where we thought they ought to stay,” Ball said, with a smile on his face. “Colin and Michael are both older, both transfers, and both can play. Colin is really athletic, and he can play outside too…he’s got a great arm. He’s willing to take some chances off the net. Colin is going to make a tremendous difference on our team.” Eclipsing the 400-win plateau puts Coach Ball in some very rarified air, but he shrugs it off by joking that he’s “just been around a long time.” And even though he is entering his 26th season, he shows no signs of slowing down and revealed what still drives him. “It’s just so much fun to still go to the gym and have a chance to work with quality young people. We don’t even have a study table with this group, and I think our grades are going to be better than they have ever been. They’re just good kids, they’re good students. They work hard, and the game is just 14

IPFW at a glance one university. two great names.
INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E
The university offers more than 190 academic programs for undergraduate and graduate students who are taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics. TM
As northeast Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning.
IPFW continues to grow, both in number of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as members of the community. IPFW has new, apartment-style student housing, offering a more traditional university experience to students. Plans for a new music building and medical education building are in the works. IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schools of Arts and Sciences; Business and Management Sciences; Education; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; Health Sciences; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are more than 90 student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups include departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special-interest groups. There are also several intramural sports. IPFW is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. 2006 IPFW MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Fort Wayne history of the summit city Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee River and Wabash River basins.

Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sportsminded, there are three professional teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets, the Midwest League’s Single A Baseball Fort Wayne Wizards (whose parent club is the San Diego Padres), and the United Indoor Football Association’s Fort Wayne Freedom. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisies, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights. For those interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre. Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of television, Philo T. Farnsworth, was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps. 2006 IPFW MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
