IPFW at a glance one university. two great names.

INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E

The university offers more than 190 academic programs for undergraduate and graduate students who are taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics. TM

As northeast Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning.

IPFW continues to grow, both in number of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen soccer fields alongside the St. Joseph River has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as members of the community. IPFW has new, apartmentstyle student housing, offering a more traditional university experience to students. Plans for a new music building and a medical education center are in the works. IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; the Richard T. Doermer School of Business and Management Sciences; the School of Arts and Sciences; the School of Education; the School of Health Sciences; and the School of Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are nearly 100 student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups include departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special-interest groups. There are also several intramural sports. IPFW is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. 2

Fort Wayne history of the summit city Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee River and Wabash River basins.

…with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana.

Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sportsminded, there are three professional teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets, the Midwest League’s Single A Baseball Fort Wayne Wizards (whose parent club is the San Diego Padres), and the United Indoor Football Association’s Fort Wayne Freedom. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisies, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights. For those interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Fort Wayne Ballet, Civic Theatre, Artlink, the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre. Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of the television, Philo T. Farnsworth, was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.

Mark Pope

INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E

director of athletics Mark Pope was named IPFW’s director of athletics in July 2001 as the university was transitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I. That transition was completed on Sept. 1, 2002, as IPFW earned full NCAA Division I certification—on schedule and on budget.

TM

Since that initial year, Mark has set about transforming IPFW Athletics into a program worthy of the name “Division I.” Among his accomplishments: ▼ IPFW will become a full member of the Mid-Continent Conference in 2007; ▼ The annual IPFW Soccer Showcase was reorganized, drawing thousands of fans each year; ▼ Men’s basketball attendance increased tenfold from 2000, including the highest percentage increase of all Division I institutions in 2003-2004; ▼ Women’s Volleyball attendance doubled from 2004 to 2005; ▼ Men’s Volleyball attendance was 3rd nationally in 2006, reaching the 2006 NCAA Final Four; ▼ Contributions to Athletics have increased by 50 percent from 2003 to 2005; ▼ Gates Sports Center and the baseball field have undergone significant renovations; ▼ Men’s and women’s golf were added as sponsored sports; and ▼ In cooperation with the IPFW Alumni and Student Government Associations, IPFW’s homecoming tradition was created. In addition to these successes, Mark has always focused on the “student” component of the IPFW student-athlete. Pope’s departmental goal of a 3.0 Grade-Point Average has been reached for the past three years. The IPFW softball, tennis, cross country and track teams have earned All-Academic honors from their respective associations. IPFW Athletics graduates its student-athletes at a rate that is double that of the IPFW all-campus rate. Pope holds a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from Indiana University. He has been a member of the Bar of the State of Indiana for more than 25 years. Mark and his wife, Julie, are the proud parents of two sons, Brent and Brad.

A Look Ahead... After a tumultuous 2005–06 season, the women’s basketball team is looking toward the future. The ladies return three of the five starters from the 2005–06 season and look to improve on their previous records. IPFW started to rebound—after going 5–1 at the end—and finished the season with a 7–21 record. The Mastodons return their two top scorers in senior Ashley Johnson and junior Johnna Lewis-Carlisle. Together, the ladies combined efforts led to 813 points last year. In the scoring ranks, the Dons return every player but one who scored more than 100 points last year. Guards The Mastodons host seven guards for the 2006–07 season. Seniors Ashley Johnson, Hilary O’Connell, and Pavla Pletková, along with junior Johnna Lewis-Carlisle, look to improve on last year. Together, the ladies combined for 1,012 points last year. Sophomore Nanyamka Moore and freshmen Courtney Reed and Hannah Thieke will also be looking for playing time in 2006–07. Ashley Johnson received many accolades in 2005–06. She was named Independent Player of the Week (Feb. 28) and was named to the All-Independent WBB Second Team. Topping the list was the breaking of a record that stood for 15 years. Johnson connected for 22 of 23 free throws against North Dakota State on Feb. 26 to set a new individual game record. Johnson is a captain for her senior year and is the leader of the team on and off the court. Coach Chris Paul will be counting on her continued leadership in 2006–07. Hilary O’Connell is returning to the Dons’ lineup after surgery in the off-season. O’Connell is a captain again this year, and Paul looks for her to get back on the floor because her strong point is her outside shooting. O’Connell capped last year with 6.9 ppg and 3.2 rpg averages. She was named to the Independent AllAcademic Team. Pavla Pletková is a strong, hard nosed player. Although she didn’t see a lot of game time last year, the junior college transfer is a presence. Her experience from two years at Yavapai, as well as last year, makes her a great leader for the underclassmen, according to Paul. Pletková was named to the All-Academic team for Independents in her first season with the Dons. Junior Johnna Lewis-Carlisle led the Dons in all scoring categories last season. She averaged 14.7 ppg as a sophomore and hit 73.2 percent of her free throws in 2005–06. LewisCarlisle was named Independent Player of the Week (March 3) and was named to the Second Team All-Independent Team. “She’s a very quick guard who has the ability to score on anyone at anytime,” Paul says. “I expect a break out season for her this year.”

20

Sophomore Nanyamka Moore averaged 4.3 ppg and 2.8 rpg in her freshman campaign. The 5’8” guard will vie for minutes once again after seeing action in all 28 games last season. “Probably the best athlete on the team,” Paul says. “Her aggressive style of play, both on the offensive and defensive ends, causes many mismatch problems for our opponents.” Courtney Reed comes to IPFW after a successful high school career at Fort Laramie. Reed is a true point guard and will give IPFW added depth in the backcourt. Reed averaged 13.93 ppg and 2.56 rpg during her senior season at Fort Laramie. Hannah Thieke rounds out the Dons’ guards. She also comes to IPFW after a successful athletic career. Thieke is a Kokomo, Ind., native and graduated from Western High School. Thieke is a hard worker and is an athletic wing player with a very quick release. Thieke was a three-sport athlete at Western, participating in soccer, track, and basketball. She averaged 16.3 ppg and 5.6 rpg during her senior season.

2006–07 IPFW WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Forwards Junior Natalie Roberts is the lone upperclassmen of the forwards. Sophomore forward Tina Moen has become accustomed to American ball and red-shirted freshman Samantha Edwards will look for floor time as well in 2006–07. Natalie Roberts averaged 2.7 ppg and 2.7 rpg in 2005–06 with participation in 24 of the Dons’ games. She averaged 12.04 minutes per game and she has come a long way during the last two seasons. “We will need Roberts to continue to show improvement and consistency, as she could become a very good player,” Paul says. Tina Moen returns after a learning experience of a freshman season. Moen, a member of the Norwegian National Team, had to get use to American-style basketball last season. Moen saw action in all 28 games last year and averaged 5.9 ppg and 2.5 rpg. Moen is an excellent shooter from fifteen feet. “We will look for Moen to be more aggressive, both on the offensive and defensive ends,” Paul says.

The Mastodons open their season with a home game against Toledo on Nov. 11. The rest of November, the Dons are on the road at two tournaments. In December, IPFW will host the second annual Hoopla event on Dec. 10. IPFW will play the Indiana Hoosiers in the nightcap, with Valparaiso and Ball State playing the opener. In December, the Dons will host Central Michigan and Marygrove in other home contests. They will be on the road to IUPUI and Illinois as well as Northern Iowa and Winthrop. The Dons hold the bulk of their home schedule in January and February. Butler, Valparaiso, Northern Illinois, Texas Pan American, Utah Valley State, and Tennessee–Martin all will travel to the Gates Sports Center to take on the Mastodons. The Dons will round out their schedule with the Dakotas in March at Gates.

Samantha Edwards, a six-foot freshman, sat out last season with a medical red-shirt. Now that she is healthy, Paul looks for her to contribute greatly due to her aggressiveness on the offensive and defensive ends. “Edwards is going to cause a lot of teams mismatch problems with her height and quickness.” Centers Senior Starla Williams and junior Juliane Höhne are both a threat on the inside. Freshmen Lieselot Malfait and Andrea Morrow will have to work hard in 2006–07 to vie for time. Senior Starla Williams posted her best averages last season. She averaged 1.8 ppg and 2.6 rpg, almost doubling her previous totals for the two previous seasons last year. Williams is a captain this season and a very determined player. “She is aggressive defensively on the glass,” Paul says. “We will be looking for her to give us an experienced post-presence.” Juliane Höhne, after a season of American ball, is still in the learning process. Last season, Höhne averaged 7.3 ppg and 4.0 rpg. She scored 204 points in her first season as a Don. Höhne is a very talented post player who is getting better everyday. “When she figures out American ball, she will be a dominant post-player.” said Paul. Lieselot Malfait is the third international player on the squad for 2006–07. Malfait is a member of the Belgium National Team and is a tremendous athlete who never tires out. “She runs extremely well and has very good footwork,” Paul says. “We need her to get adjusted to American ball very quickly, as we’ll be relying on her from day one.” Andrea Morrow rounds out the Dons’ underclassman. Morrow comes to IPFW from just across the border in Van Wert, Ohio. Morrow is currently battling injuries, but once she recovers, she will be used at the post. “We look forward to getting Morrow on the floor and getting her the experience she needs.” Paul says.

#3 Ashley Johnson 5’8” - Senior - Guard Kokomo, Ind. - Kokomo 2005–06 Season Johnson finished a successful junior campaign moving up in the All-time records and setting a new IPFW record. Johnson connected for 22 of 23 free throw shots against North Dakota State on Feb. 26 to break a record that stood for 15 years.
