IPFW at a glance

INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E

one university. two great names.

The university offers more than 185 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics. TM

As northeast Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning.

IPFW continues to grow, both in number of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as members of the community. IPFW now has Student Housing, offering a more traditional university experience to students. Plans for a new music building and medical education building are in the works. IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the colleges of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are more than 90 student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups include departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special-interest groups. There are also several intramural sports. IPFW receives its accreditation from The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. 2

Fort Wayne history of the summit city Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the Summit City, by being the highest place between the Maumee River and Wabash River basins.

Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are three professional teams based here: United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets, Midwest League’s Single A Baseball Fort Wayne Wizards (whose parent club is the San Diego Padres), and United Indoor Football Association’s Fort Wayne Freedom. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisies, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights. For those interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

…with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana.

Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of television, Philo T. Farnsworth, was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.

Mark Pope

INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY F O R T W AY N E

director of athletics Mark Pope was named IPFW’s director of athletics in July 2001 as the university was transitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I. That transition was completed Sept. 1, 2002, as IPFW earned NCAA Division I certification — on schedule and on budget.

TM

Since that initial year, Pope has set about transforming IPFW Athletics into a program worthy of the name “Division I.” Among his accomplishments are the following: ▼ The annual IPFW Soccer Showcase was reorganized, drawing 11,500 fans in 2003 and 15,000 fans in 2004. ▼ Men’s basketball attendance increased tenfold from 2000, including the highest percentage increase of all Division I institutions in 2003. ▼ Women’s volleyball attendance tripled from 2002 to 2003. ▼ Men’s volleyball attendance was ranked third nationally in 2004. ▼ Contributions to Athletics have increased by 50 percent from 2001 to 2003. ▼ The Gates Sports Center and baseball field have undergone significant renovations. ▼ Men’s and women’s golf were added as sponsored sports. ▼ In cooperation with IPFW Alumni Relations and the Indiana Purdue Student Government Association, IPFW’s Homecoming tradition was created. ▼ The IPFW Stomp Band was organized. With these successes, Pope has continued to focus on the student component of the IPFW student-athlete. Last year Pope’s departmental goal of a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) was realized, as IPFW student-athletes achieved a 3.01 GPA. The IPFW softball, tennis, cross country, and track teams have earned All-Academic honors from their respective associations. IPFW Athletics graduates its student-athletes at a rate that is double that of the IPFW all-campus rate. Pope has a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from Indiana University. He has been a member of the bar of the State of Indiana for 27 years. Pope and his wife, Julie, are the proud parents of two sons, Brent and Brad.

Bruce Patterson Head Coach American College, ’81 As Coach Patterson enters his fifth season at IPFW, the outlook is better than ever. The Division I frontier has been a tough one during the past four years, but this year the staff is cautiously optimistic regarding the upcoming season. In the last 15 years of college coaching, Coach Patterson has amassed a career coaching record of 272 wins and 186 losses (.594%). In his prior coaching career at the University of Saint Francis, Coach Patterson guided his teams to seven consecutive national tournament appearances. The team reached the Elite Eight in his last five years. Two of his teams made the final four, and the 1999 team was the national runner-up in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Coach Patterson believes the keys to success will rest in recruiting. He takes pride in surrounding himself with talented people. He knows that for the women’s team to be successful he must have great assistant coaches and players. Coach Patterson grew up and has lived in Fort Wayne all his life. He attended college at IPFW and played baseball on one of the school’s first intercollegiate teams. Coach Patterson enjoys all kind of sporting activities including golf, tennis, and waterskiing. He is also an instrument-rated pilot with more than 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time logged. Coach Patterson has been married for over 35 years to his wife, Sandy. Sandy is a very talented person in her own right. She just retired from a very successful career in nursing and nursing home administration. They have two wonderful children, Trisha and Emily. Both daughters graduated from the University of Saint Francis with honors and have gone on to attend law school. Trisha is a partner at Barrett and McNagny. Emily is in her second year as an associate with the law firm of Burt, Blee, Dixon, Sutton & Bloom. Trisha has given Coach Patterson two wonderful grandchildren, Jalen and Jackson. Coach Patterson loves playing the role of grandfather to both of them.

Chris Paul Associate Head Coach Chris Paul enters his third season as associate head coach for the Mastodons. Paul spent the previous two seasons as first assistant coach. Prior to coming to IPFW, Paul spent six years as an assistant coach at the University of Saint Francis. At IPFW, he is responsible for all everyday activities, which include practice, game preparation, recruiting, and coaching defensive schemes. Paul received a B.S. in business administration in 1994 from the University of Saint Francis. While at USF he was a four-year letterwinner and holds the school record for assists in a game (18) and in a season (147). In his limited free time Paul assists in coaching teams for his son, Jalen, including t-ball, flag football, and basketball. He resides in Fort Wayne with his wife, Trisha, a partner at Barrett & McNagny, and their sons, Jalen (7) and Jackson (3).

Charity Middleton Assistant Coach Middleton attended the University of Saint Francis and was a point guard for coaches Patterson and Paul. While at USF, Middleton excelled in the classroom and on the court. She is ranked sixth for All-Time Scoring (1,310 points) and is in the top 10 for assists. Middleton was the starting point guard for Patterson and Paul’s 1999 squad that played for the NAIA Division II National Championship. During her career, the Cougars were never ranked lower than 10th in the nation, including her junior season when USF was ranked #1 the entire year. Middleton played in four Elite Eights, two final fours, and one national championship where Saint Francis was the national runner-up. Middleton graduated in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with an emphasis in sports management, and in 2005 with an M.B.A. with an emphasis in marketing. “I have known Charity since she was a high school player,” Patterson said. “Charity works hard at everything she does. When you try to hire someone to work with, you want to make sure they are as determined to be as successful as you want to be. We know that Charity wants to succeed.” Middleton (formerly Charity Richardson) was married to Seth Middleton in October 2005.

Meet the Mastodons

17

2005–2006 WOMEN’S MASTODON BASKETBALL

2005–06 Season Outlook Cautious optimism would be the best phrase to describe this year’s women’s basketball team for IPFW. After high turnover from last year and the loss of two key starters, the Mastodons have added eight newcomers to the eight returning athletes from last year. Although the Mastodons lost six athletes from last year’s squad, cohesion and team unity still exist and have grown stronger after the many additions made throughout the year. The Mastodons graduated two starters (Courtney Nicley and Verea Bibbs) and lost six letterwinners (Sarah Glowacki, Michelle Manno, Molly Martin, Lindsey Bayer, Nicley, and Bibbs) from last year’s 5-23 squad. This year the Mastodons have brought in two transfers and six underclassmen from around the region and the globe to add depth and strength to the team. Returning Players The Mastodon senior class is the backbone of this team. Kelly Boyd, Jenny Green, and Geneva Murdock return for their fourth and final season as Mastodons in 2005–06. According to Head Coach Bruce Patterson, the leadership and sacrifices made by these seniors will show the rest of the team what it means to be on that court. Every year these three women have made improvements to their game and the team at IPFW. Senior Kelly Boyd “has made strides each and every year she has been at IPFW,” Patterson said. The coaching staff looks for Boyd to be more aggressive on the inside this year both offensively and defensively. Although Boyd did not score the most points, she did make the best of the shots she did take. She was 16 of 35 (.457) from the field and pulled down 32 rebounds and blocked 16 shots. Senior Jenny Green “is one of the best leaders I have been associated with,” Patterson said. Her ability to direct and lead on and off the court makes Green a dynamic player. Over the summer Green worked hard on her perimeter jump shot, and the coaching staff expects that to help this year. Green improved her free-throw percentage last year after going 16 of 23 (.696). She pulled down 63 rebounds and 13 steals. Rounding out the senior class is Geneva Murdock. The Fort Wayne native has been plagued with injuries since she started at IPFW, but that has not stopped her from being there for her team. Even with the injuries, Murdock pulled down 46 rebounds and 10 steals in her floor time. She was 26 of 83 from the field and at the charity stripe was 13 of 23. Unfortunately the senior will not see play time due to injury this year. She will be instrumental though on the sideline and an important member of the team. Ashley Johnson leads the junior class and is a top returner from last year’s squad. Patterson said, “She understands what this coaching staff is looking for as much as any player that we have had here at IPFW. Ashley is an outstanding defensive player and she has always been a good penetrator on the offensive end of the court.” Last year Johnson scored 266 points and was 93 of 241 (.386) from the field and 68 of 88 (.773) from the charity stripe. Johnson also dished out 44 assists and had 93 rebounds and 42 steals to round out her sophomore campaign. Hilary O’Connell returned and shined last year after sitting out her sophomore year with a medical redshirt. In her second campaign as a Mastodon, O’Connell scored 162 points and pulled down 95 rebounds and 37 assists. “We expect Hilary to return to the confidence level that she demonstrated as a freshman,” Patterson said. Starla Williams returns as the most pleasant surprise of the preseason for the Mastodons. “Starla has played big and hard so far this year. We look for her to take that attitude and performance to game day,” Patterson said. Williams can give substantial help to IPFW in the rebounding and defensive sides and can shoot the ball well from the perimeter.

2005–2006 WOMEN’S MASTODON BASKETBALL

From last year’s newcomers only two remain: Natalie Roberts and Johnna LewisCarlisle. Roberts saw minimal play time but, upon improvement, could see more time this year. “Natalie is the X factor, a talented player that needs to stay focused on the game,” Patterson said. “She has shown continued improvement in that area this year and we look forward to her doing that throughout the year. If she does, Natalie could get some significant minutes in the upcoming year.” Roberts pulled down 51 rebounds, 8 steals, and 4 blocked shots in her freshman campaign. Lewis-Carlisle could best be described as a pure scorer. “Johnna can score at will when she is on,” Patterson said. “She needs to be more consistent and let the game come to her. She is working hard every day, and we expect her to lead us in scoring much of the year.” Lewis-Carlisle put 260 points on the board in her freshman year as well as 43 steals and 36 assists. Newcomers This year’s incoming class has the most depth of any incoming class under Patterson. With the addition of eight women in all, the Mastodons look to improve greatly in all areas. This year the horizons were broadened with the inclusion of three players from Europe. Jessica Mast redshirted last year after transferring from Defiance College. “Jessica has a great stroke from the perimeter,” Patterson said. “She needs to work on her movement without the ball to be a major contributor. Look for Jessica to be used in spot positions when we need a 3.” Pavla Pletková, a native of Prague, Czech Republic, comes to IPFW from Yavapai Junior College in Arizona with two years of college play experience. “She is a very smart player that can defend and rebound,” Patterson said. Juliane Höhne will make the transition from European to U.S. ball this year. A native of Halle, Germany, Höhne is a 6’3” center who can run like a deer. She has the ability to change the way people think about IPFW basketball, with the help of a few others. “She is a good shooter who also has great hands,” Patterson said. “Come watch this player play.” Tina Moen rounds out the women from across the pond. Moen is a native of Oslo, Norway, and attended Wang Toppidrett, a sports academy. “Tina is a very good player who can run and jump,” Patterson said. “Excellent shooter from 15’ who also has the ability to finish on the run. Tina is one of two players that we have on the roster who has a chance of being independent newcomer of the year.” Moen has been a member of the Norwegian National Team for the last two years and just recently traveled home to compete with it in the European Championships. Victoria Grossnickle sat out last year and will need time to get back into basketball condition, but after that — watch out — she’s ready for the competition. “Victoria is a big player who likes to face the basket,” Patterson said. “It might take a little while for her to get back into game-day condition, but when she does, she could be a factor for us in years to come.” Nanyamka Moore may be the only player able to beat out Lewis-Carlisle when it comes to speed. According to Patterson, she is probably the quickest player he has ever coached. “Nanyamka can really run and jump. Shooting from 15’ and in is excellent. Before Nanyamka leaves IPFW, she will be a great point guard. We are excited to watch her grow into that role.” Although she was added late, don’t count out Katie Schneider. The Western Brown grad signed late in the summer with the Mastodons, but that isn’t a problem around here. “She’s a quality player who is not real flashy but just seems to find a way to get the job done,” Patterson said. “She’s a good perimeter shooter who knows how to get to the free-throw line. The coaching staff likes what we have seen in Katie.” The coaching staff isn’t making any big predictions about this year, but by the looks of the roster and the depth, this year will be much better than years past. “IPFW women’s basketball finally has enough talent and size to compete on a regular basis,” Patterson said. “The coaching staff is cautiously optimistic about 2005–06. We hope to get off to a good start so the players can start to believe in what we are doing and where we are going.”
