Hilliard Gates Sports Center The Hilliard Gates Sports Center is home for the IPFW women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and men’s volleyball teams. The Gates Sports Center is also the practice facility for the IPFW men’s basketball program. The 68,000+ square foot, tri-level facility is located on the northeast end of the IPFW campus and features a multipurpose gymnasium with three practice/game courts. The Gates Sports Center seats 2,700 for events. The center also houses a 1/9-mile indoor tartan rubber track, five racquetball/handball courts, a fully equipped fitness center, and newly renovated athletic locker rooms.

Season Preview ead Coach Bruce Patterson enters this season with as much, if not more, optimism than when he came to IPFW and took over the coaching responsibilities for the 2001–02 season. “The anticipation is at that level because we feel that we have strengthened our team in many ways,” Patterson said.

Boyd does not average many points, she is productive in her shooting. Last year she was 35 of 66 from the field. She also blocked 20 shots and is very consistent at the freethrow line. According to Patterson, “For IPFW to be successful Kelly needs to give us quality minutes. Confidence is the key factor in her success.”

One major strength is the number of players gained and the few that were lost. By losing only two players (Amy Gearlds and Maggie Bruening) to graduation and gaining four freshmen (Lindsey Bayer, Sarah Glowacki, Johnna Lewis-Carlisle, and Natalie Roberts) and three redshirts (Michelle Manno, Molly Martin, and Hilary O’Connell) from last year, the team has added more depth and ability from beyond the arc. The Dons return seven letterwinners to the squad for the 2004–05 season.

Starla Williams returns for her sophomore campaign after a successful first year. Patterson stated, “Starla is the returning player who has appeared to have made the biggest move in her summertime preparation for the season. …She is leaner, stronger, and much faster and looks ready to play.” Although Williams only averaged 8.9 minutes per game, she was 9 of 30 from the field and 9 of 15 at the line. She also recorded 43 rebounds in her limited time on the court.

The redshirt class, Manno, Martin, and O’Connell, will bring excellent outside shooting and quality ball handling to this year’s squad. The freshman guards, Bayer, LewisCarlisle, and Glowacki, will provide additional speed that will be critical this year as will the addition of fellow freshman Roberts on the inside. Returning Players: Senior center Verea Bibbs returns from a very productive junior campaign. She averaged 13.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game last year. She recorded nine double doubles for the year as well. “Verea’s ability to run and jump make her very difficult to contain on the basketball court,” Patterson said. “She has the ability to defend and score over the top of much bigger players.” Currently, she holds a spot in three all-time records at IPFW, field-goal percentage, rebounds, and blocked shots. Junior center Kelly Boyd returns as a more aggressive and quicker player this year compared to last. Not only has her speed increased but her confidence has as well. Although 6

Senior guard Courtney Nicley returns for her final campaign as a Mastodon. Nicley averaged 11.6 points per game last year. She was 123 of 338 from the field, 24 of 64 from beyond the arc, and 55 of 77 at the line. “Courtney is a streak shooter who can manufacture shots in traffic,” Patterson stated. “We fully expect Courtney to have an All-Independent type season, and if she does, IPFW will have a great year.” During the summer months, Nicley and Green assisted in transforming the returning players into leaner, more effective basketball players through conditioning and skill development. Junior guard Jenny Green returns as the only junior captain that the current coaching staff has ever named. Her work ethic and drive were apparent over the summer during conditioning and skill development. During her sophomore campaign she posted some great numbers including 115 rebounds and 21 steals. She was 44 of 108 from the field and 38 of 64 from the line. “Jenny wants to win in the worst way and has done her best to drive the rest of the team through the summer months…she has made herself into a fine outside shooter.” 2004–2005 IPFW WOMEN’S MASTODONS BASKETBALL

Season Preview Paul, “I feel like we are deeper than we have ever been.” IPFW returns two competent players from medical redshirts in Hilary O’Connell and Michelle Manno for this season. Also, redshirt Molly Martin, who transferred from Bowling Green State University last year, is eligible to participate and expected to contribute to the team. One of the major areas of concern for the coaching staff this year is what the players begin to think about their abilities. The coaching staff knows that this team can compete at the very highest level; the players just have to convince themselves that they are good enough. Summer conditioning has proven effective, and Assistant Coach Alan Buck states, “Our conditioning from a team standpoint is as good as I have ever seen since I’ve been at IPFW. This team will really be able to get up and down the court.”

Geneva Murdock, a junior guard, returns after a year plagued with injuries. According to Patterson, “My admiration for this player is very high because of the pain she has had to go through to play. The only thing that separates Geneva from being a star is health.” Even with injuries, Murdock recorded 84 rebounds and was 57 of 160 from the field and 21 of 30 at the line. Sophomore guard Ashley Johnson returns from a productive first year. After one season, Johnson’s free-throw percentage (.762) landed her in the all-time records. She was 32 of 42 from the line as well as 32 of 89 from the field. She also recorded 33 assists and 19 steals in her freshman campaign. “Her shooting has improved significantly,” Patterson stated. “I believe that AJ feels that she has something to prove and we are anxious to watch her do just that.”

Another area of concern is the schedule itself. Early on, games against Bowling Green, Purdue, and Iowa State could attack the selfesteem of the team as a whole. Later in the season games against Illinois and Utah could also attack that confidence that the players have worked on all summer. To be successful this year, the team needs to win 50 percent of their games. One team goal for this year is to lead the nation in scoring. Coach Patterson hopes to complete this goal with the new up-tempo, aggressive style of play that they have implemented for this season. “We are going to press all over the court and run and shoot at every opportunity.” With these goals and the aggressive style of play, this should be the season that allows IPFW to show that it is a solid Division I program and can compete against anyone.

2004–05 Coaching Staff Head Coach Bruce Patterson teady progress has been realized by the Dons since Coach Bruce Patterson arrived on the scene three seasons ago. Coach Patterson enters his fourth year as the head coach coming off an 8-20 season last year. Over the last 14 years of college coaching, Coach Patterson has amassed a career coaching record of 267 wins and 163 losses (.621%).

In his prior coaching career at the University of Saint Francis, Coach Patterson guided his teams to seven consecutive national tournament appearances. The team reached the elite eight in his last five years. Two of his teams made the final four, and the 1999 team was the national runner-up in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Coach Patterson believes the keys to success will rest in the recruiting. He takes pride in surrounding himself with talented people. He knows that for the women’s team to be successful he must have great assistant coaches and players. Coach Patterson grew up and has lived in Fort Wayne all of his life. He attended IPFW and played baseball on one of the school’s first intercollegiate teams. Coach Patterson enjoys all kinds of sporting activities including golf, tennis, and waterskiing. He is also an instrument-rated pilot with more than 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time logged. Coach Patterson has been married for 35 years to his wife, Sandy. Sandy is a very talented person in her own right. She just retired from a very successful career in nursing and nursing home administration. They have two wonderful children, Trish and Emily. Both daughters graduated from the University of Saint Francis with honors and have gone on to attend law school. Trish is in her seventh year as an associate with Barrett and McNagny. Emily is in her first year as an associate with the law firm of Burt, Blee, Dixon, Sutton & Bloom. Trish has given Coach Patterson two wonderful grandchildren, Jalen and Jackson. Coach Patterson loves playing the role of grandfather to both of them.

2004–05 Coaching Staff Associate Head Coach Chris Paul Chris Paul enters his second season as associate head coach for the Mastodons. Paul spend the prior two seasons as first assistant coach. Before coming to IPFW, Paul spent six years as an assistant coach at the University of Saint Francis. At IPFW, he is responsible for all everyday activities, which include practice, game preparation, recruiting, and coaching defensive schemes . Paul is a 1994 graduate of the University of Saint Francis, where he was a four-year letterwinner and holds the school record for assists in a game (18) and in a season (147). He resides in Fort Wayne with his wife Trisha, and their sons Jalen (5) and Jackson (1).

Assistant Coach Alan Buck Alan Buck enters his fourth season as an assistant coach at IPFW. He coached for eight years at the University of Saint Francis. At IPFW he is in charge of the recruiting program, coordinating academics, and other coaching functions. Buck is a graduate of Lima Bath High School and has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Ohio University in Athens, where he played basketball for two years. Buck is the director of information systems at Our Sunday Visitor in Huntington, Ind. He is a member of the Fort Wayne MIS Systems Forum, and his hobbies include golf and tennis. He and his wife Nancy reside in Fort Wayne, and they enjoy movies, traveling, and finding new restaurants for dinner.

Assistant Coach Niecee Nelson This is Niecee Nelson’s first season with the Mastodons. She comes to IPFW from the University of Wyoming, where she was a graduate assistant. Nelson worked closely with the staff and team on practice and game day coaching, individual workouts, academic support, film exchange, and guard and post development. Nelson was a two-time NAIA All-American at Concordia University in Portland, Ore. She was also named to the Lutheran Brotherhood All-American Team and was a scholar-athlete. Nelson was chosen as the Cascade Conference Freshman-of-the-Year in her first year at Concordia. Nelson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 2002 and a Master of Science in kinesiology and health in 2004. She resides in Fort Wayne with her husband Steve. “The very first time I talked to Niecee I knew she was someone we had to look at,” Coach Patterson said. “She has a phone personality that will attract other young people to our school. I have hired a number of people over my career and I have never had a group of references more enthusiastic about a candidate. We look forward to having Niecee on our staff!”

#10 Courtney Nicley Guard Senior 5′8″ Lebanon, Ind. Western Boone 2003–04 Season: Nicley started 26 of 28 games…She averaged 30.6 minutes per game…Nicley averaged 11.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game…She recorded a double double against Valparaiso (2/28/04) with 22 points and 11 rebounds…Nicley finished the season going 123 of 338 (.364) from the floor and 24 of 64 (.375) from the threepoint line…From the free-throw line she was 55 of 77 (.714)…In 28 games she recorded 97 rebounds, 80 turnovers, and 64 assists.

2002–03 Season: Nicley averaged 9.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game…She played in 23 of the 28 games and averaged 27.6 minutes per game…Nicley had a season-high 26 points against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2/20/03)…She had a season-high eight rebounds against Murray State (1/7/03)…Nicley finished the season going 73 of 204 (.358) from the floor…She was 7 of 29 (.241) from the three-point line…At the free-throw line she shot 63 of 85 (.741)…In 23 games she turned the ball over 75 times, while dishing out 38 assists.

2001–02 Season: A primary starter as a freshman for the Mastodons, Nicley played in all 27 games last year. Her best game came against Cleveland State University in the Mastodons’ first appearance at the Memorial Coliseum where she had 19 points and seven rebounds. Nicley ended the season second in assists (68) and offensive rebounds (34) for the team.

Before Coming to IPFW: Nicley played four years at Western Boone in basketball, volleyball, and track and field. She was All-County, All-Conference, and All-Metro North. Nicley led her team in points, steals, rebounds, and shooting percentage her senior year. She holds the single game scoring record. Nicley finished her high school career averaging 20 ppg, 6.2 rbg, and 2.1 apg.

Personal: Born Aug. 5, 1983. Nicley is a criminal justice major. She is the daughter of Paul and Phyllis Nicley with two brothers, Wes and Caleb, and three sisters, Brooke, Brittany, and Trisha.

Coach on Nicley: “Courtney has matured as a player and a person over her three years here at IPFW. Courtney is a streak shooter who can manufacture shots in traffic. She is a consistent shooter and understands that we need her to rebound more this year. We fully expect Courtney to have an All-Independent type season, and if she does, IPFW will have a great year.”

2003–04 Season: Bibbs started in 25 of 28 games this season averaging 26.9 minutes per game…She averaged 13.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game…Bibbs recorded nine double doubles throughout the year…She finished the season shooting 144 of 256 (.563) from the floor…From the free-throw line she was 100 of 145 (.690)…Bibbs led in total rebounds with 235 and also recorded 37 steals and 22 blocks for the season.

2002–03 Season: Bibbs averaged 9.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game…She started in 11 of the 28 games and averaged 21.3 minutes a game…Bibbs had a season-high 22 points against Centenary (2/5/03)…She had a season-high 15 rebounds against ArkansasLittle Rock (12/1/02)…She finished the season shooting 103 of 189 (.545) from the floor…At the free-throw line she connected on 49 of 88 (.557). Bibbs led the total rebound category for the team with 175.

2001–02 Season: Although she was academically ineligible after 10 games, Bibbs showed that she could play with the competition at the Division I level. She had a game-high of 12 points against Eastern Illinois where she led the team in rebounds. Against North Texas, Bibbs had a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Before Coming to IPFW: Bibbs played four years of varsity basketball at Euclid, where she was one of the top female athletes. She averaged 16.6 ppg, 13.5 rbg, and 2.4 steals per game. She is very fast, strong, and coachable. Bibbs was All-Conference and named Player of the Week her senior year.

Personal: Born Dec. 25, 1982. Bibbs is a secondary education major. She is the daughter of Veree Bibbs and has two brothers, Ramondo and William.

2003–04 Season: Green started 25 of 28 games and averaged 22.3 minutes per game…She averaged 4.5 points per game and 4.1 rebounds per game…Green made 44 of 108 (.407) from the field…She finished 38 of 64 (.594) from the free-throw line…She finished the season with 115 rebounds, 26 assists, and 56 turnovers.

2002–03 Season: Green averaged 2.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game…She started in 7 of the 28 games and averaged 13.6 minutes per game…Green had a season-high nine points against Savannah State (11/24/02)…She had a season-high six rebounds vs. Arkansas-Little Rock (12/1/02) and Cleveland State (2/26/03)…Green finished the season 20 of 51 (.392) from the field…At the charity stripe Green struggled shooting 18-of-38 (.474)

Before Coming to IPFW: Green hails from Lansing, Mich., where she earned All-Conference Honors (three years) and All-Area Honors (two years). After her senior season, she received All-State honors and was also named MVP of her team. She is the first basketball player to have accumulated more than 350 points, assists, and rebounds at Lansing Catholic Central High School. Academically, she has made the Principal’s List for four years and was a member of the National Honor Society.

Before Coming to IPFW: Boyd is a three-year varsity basketball letterwinner. She helped her team to two regional championships and two trips to the Class 2A Final Four. She has numerous team awards, including a pair of Mental Attitude Awards and Most Improved Player. Boyd also holds the school record for blocks in the season with an impressive 131. She was named to both South Bend Tribune’s All-Area team and Post Tribune’s All Area team. Boyd has also been successful in the classroom, where she graduated with a 3.8 GPA and in the top 10 percent of her class, including an Academic Honors Diploma.

Personal: Born April 17, 1984. Boyd is a math education major. She is the daughter of the Rev. Michael and Ida Boyd and has a brother, John.

Before Coming to IPFW: In her senior year, Johnson received a blue ring after her high school team defeated for the Perry Meridian IHSAA State Championship and also finished the season with the perfect record of 26-0. Johnson led her team in assists with an impressive 171.

Before Coming to IPFW: Martin was a three-time All-County First Team athlete along with being selected to the Indianapolis Star “Super Team” (consisting of the top eight players in the area by the coaches’ vote). Martin was selected to participate in the Adidas AllAmerican Camp (top 100 players in the nation), which took place in Pittsburgh, Pa., during her junior year. In her senior year, she was ranked 25th best point guard in the nation by Adidas All-Star Report. Martin holds the single season assist record while at Noblesville and averaged 7.6 assists per game her senior year. In the classroom, Martin was on the High Honor Roll all four years along with being chosen to the Academic-All Conference team.

While at Henry Clay High School, Lewis-Carlisle was the MVP her senior year and had the best free-throw percentage of her team. She also participated in the Ohio & Kentucky All Star game and was on the All-Lexington team and made honorable mention for the All-State team.

While at Lincoln High School, Roberts was all conference, team captain, MVP, and MIP. Roberts also was named a Top 100 Senior and MVP of the All-Star Game for seniors.

Personal: Born Dec. 7, 1985. Roberts is a general studies major. She is the daughter of Darlena Roberts and has two sisters, Amber and Odessa.

During her senior year she was MVP, Midland Daily News Dream Team, Township Times Dream Team, All Conference, and All State Honorable Mention. She also played on the Michigan Gold Jr. Olympic team in 2003.

While at Norfolk Catholic, Bayer excelled in the classroom and on the court. She was a member of the National Honor Society and on the honor roll. On the court, she was named First Team All-State, state basketball runner-ups, and All Mid-States Conference her junior and senior seasons. She was also named to the All-Area team.

INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE

CHANCELLOR MICHAEL A. WARTELL Academician and scientist Michael A. Wartell came to IPFW as vice chancellor for academic affairs and chemistry professor in 1993. On July 1, 1994, Wartell was installed as chancellor. His prior experience includes positions at Sandia Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif., and James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. He received a B.S. in chemistry from the University of New Mexico, and both an M.S. and Ph.D. from Yale University in physical chemistry. Wartell currently serves on the U.S. Army Science Board and has worked on such projects as chemical warfare, manpower and logistics, and decontamination. He also serves on the Defense Science Board and chairs the Defense Intelligence Agency Science and Technology Advisory Board. Wartell stays involved in the Fort Wayne community by serving on the Board of Directors of the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce, Corporate Council, Leadership Fort Wayne, and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MARK POPE Mark Pope was named IPFW’s director of athletics in July 2001 as the university was transitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I. That transition was completed on Sept. 1, 2002, as IPFW earned NCAA Division I certification — on schedule and on budget. Since that initial year, Pope has set about transforming IPFW Athletics into a program worthy of the name “Division I.” Among his accomplishments are the following: ▼ The annual IPFW Soccer Showcase was reorganized, drawing 11,500 fans in 2003 and 15,000 fans in 2004 ▼ Men’s basketball attendance increased tenfold from 2000, including the highest percentage increase of all Division I institutions in 2003–2004 ▼ Women’s volleyball attendance tripled from 2002 to 2003 ▼ Men’s volleyball attendance was third nationally in 2004 ▼ Contributions to Athletics have increased by 50 percent from 2001 to 2003 ▼ The Gates Center and baseball field have undergone significant renovations ▼ Men’s and women’s golf were added as sponsored sports ▼ In cooperation with the IPFW Alumni and Student Government Associations, IPFW’s Homecoming tradition was created ▼ The IPFW Stomp Band was organized Despite these successes, Pope has always focused on the student component of the IPFW student-athlete. Last year Pope’s departmental goal of a 3.0 grade-point average was realized, as IPFW student-athletes achieved a 3.01 GPA. The IPFW softball, tennis, cross country, and track teams have earned All-Academic honors from their respective associations. IPFW Athletics graduates its student-athletes at a rate that is double that of the IPFW all-campus rate. Pope holds a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from Indiana University. He has been a member of the Bar of the state of Indiana for 27 years. Pope and his wife, Julie, are the proud parents of two sons, Brent and Brad.

History of Fort Wayne Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins. Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are two professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets and the Midwest League for Single A Baseball’s Fort Wayne Wizards, whose parent club is the San Diego Padres. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisy’s, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights.

Fort those who are interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of the television Philo T. Farnsworth was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.

IPFW at a glance

Born separately, decades apart, and conjoined in 1964 along the banks of the St. Joseph River, Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne offers an outstanding education at a great value. As northeast Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning. The university offers more than 180 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs, taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics.

IPFW continues to grow, both in numbers of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen new soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as for members of the community. IPFW has also opened Student Housing this year, offering a more traditional university experience to full-time students. Plans for a new music building and health education building are in the works, and fundraising efforts have already begun.

IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schools of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are dozens of student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups range from departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. There are also several intramural sports groups.

IPFW receives its accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
