INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE

IPFW at a glance

Born separately, decades apart, and conjoined in 1964 along the banks of the St. Joseph River, Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne offers an outstanding education at a great value. As northeast Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized, high-quality learning. The university offers more than 180 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs, taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a television documentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging from dinosaurs to Middle East politics.

The university offers more than 180 degree options for undergraduate and graduate programs.

IPFW continues to grow, both in numbers of students and in facilities. The addition of more than a dozen new soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campus has greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as for members of the community. Plans for a new music building are in the works, and fundraising efforts have already begun. IPFW also plans to have student housing in the near future.

IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schools of Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Organizational Leadership and Supervision. There are dozens of student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups range from departmental organizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. There are also several intramural sports groups.

IPFW receives its accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

History of Fort Wayne Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins. Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, it offers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there are two professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets and the Midwest League for Single A Baseball’s Fort Wayne Wizards, whose parent club is the San Diego Padres. Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National Basketball Association and the home of the Daisy’s, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseball league. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseball game under lights.

...with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana.

Fort those who are interested in the performing arts, the Summit City offers venues such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the Civic Theatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne: the inventor of the television Philo T. Farnsworth was born here as was fashion designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of the washing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.

Two wins…That’s how close IPFW head women’s volleyball coach Kelley Hartley Hutton is to reaching the 100-victory plateau at IPFW. She owns a record of 98-57 entering her sixth year in charge of the Mastodons, after leading the squad to a stellar 22-10 mark in just its third year of Division I competition in 2003. That record, combined with its strength of schedule, was good enough for an impressive RPI of 79 (of 311 Division I volleyball schools), fourth best of the 10 Division I programs in Indiana. For this, she was voted the 2003 Independent Coach of the Year by her peers. The Dons rolled to a 12 match-win streak at one point last fall, en route to surpassing their team goal of a 20-win season. The Mastodons were just as successful in the classroom, with four student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and 75 percent of the team earning better than a 3.0 average. Hartley Hutton also serves as IPFW’s senior woman administrator and associate director of Athletics.

Carrying the torch through the Dons’ final two years of Division II play, Hartley Hutton led the Dons through a transition to the serious Division I volleyball force it is now. She directed IPFW to a 2000 regular-season championship its last year competing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and compiled an overall record of 23-7 that season. In 2001, the Dons’ first year of Division I play, the team posted a 13-14 mark followed by a 16-18 season in The Hartley 2002 — just shy of the .500 mark again. School W Walsh

For the educational and Walsh 30 cultural experience of 38 Walsh her student-athletes’ Walsh 35 Robert Morris 6 lifetime, Hartley Hutton IPFW 24 took the squad to Brazil IPFW 23 in May 2003 for IPFW 13 competitions, tourist IPFW 16 excursions, and team IPFW 22 bonding. It also meant Totals 235 “going home” for junior middle blocker Fabiana Souza (a native of Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and playing in front of her family in an IPFW jersey. Souza has led the Dons in kills since her arrival and last year led the team in kills (591), blocks (64), aces (55), and digs (296). She was named Most Valuable Player in 2003 and Offensive Player of the Year in 2004. Off the court, Big Brothers/Big Sisters is Hartley Hutton’s favorite nonprofit organization, and she has made time to

mentor an area “little” since 2002, a relationship she cherishes. IPFW women’s volleyball matches are standard fall events for the organization’s First Friends Program. After those matches, Hartley Hutton and her team use this relationship as an opportunity to talk to area youth about the importance of education and setting goals.

In 10 seasons as head coach, her overall career record stands Hutton File 235-124. She came to IPFW in 1999, after L Pct. Yr. serving one year at 13 .683 1994 Robert Morris College, 13 .697 1995 rebuilding that 8 .826 1996 program. In just one 10 .777 1997 23 .207 1998 year, her recruiting 8 .750 1999 class led the Colonials 7 .767 2000 to a Northeast 14 .481 2001 Conference 18 .400 2002 Championship and 10 .687 2003 NCAA Tournament 124 .654 10 yrs. berth in 1999 after a seventh-place league finish the year before. Hartley Hutton began her coaching career at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, for four seasons (1994-97), leading the team to back-to-back Mid-Ohio Conference titles and the NAIA tournament (1996 and 1997). At Walsh, she compiled a record of 131-44, earned MOC Coach of the Year twice, and was the league’s chairperson and regional representative. She also served as the assistant athletic director and senior woman administrator at Walsh. A 1991 graduate from the University of Toledo, Hartley Hutton played four years for the Rockets, serving as captain her junior and senior years. She earned an M.S. in sports administration from Bowling Green State University in 1993, while working at the Mid-American Conference office. After completing a one-year NCAA internship with the MAC, she was appointed to a fulltime position in 1992. Hartley Hutton and her husband, Craig Hutton, were married in February 2004 after meeting at IPFW. They reside in Fort Wayne with their dog, Jazz.

2004 Season Outlook While ball handling may be a weakness at first, one strength that will be constant throughout the season will be the play of Independent Division I Offensive Player of the Year and AllIndependent First-Team selection Fabiana Souza. Souza led the Mastodons in every offensive category in 2003. “People talk about the kills that Fabi had, but she also led us in digs, blocks, and service aces, which is amazing for a middle blocker,” Hartley Hutton said. “Even though she is only a junior, she has to provide leadership for us. I feel that your best player has to be a leader. If they’re not, something is wrong with your team.” Alongside of Souza in the middle will be senior Lindsay Brammer and sophomore Claire Jackson. Brammer really came on at the end of 2003 to give IPFW a solid blocking wall and steady offensive output. She was second on the team in blocks with 83 and had a career high in kills with 162. Jackson, as a freshman, saw action in 23 matches for the Dons and had 49 kills and 43 total blocks.

A

fter winning 22 games in 2003, what do the IPFW Mastodons do for an encore in 2004? How about taking on an even more ambitious schedule?

On the outside, the Mastodons return senior Janelle Pollard and sophomores Nicole Howell and Amanda Pfister. “At 5'8" Janelle really gets it done,” Hartley Hutton said. “Not just because she bangs the ball, but because she is smart and uses a variety of shots. She understands that you don’t have to hit the ball straight down to score points.”

Head Coach Kelley Hartley Hutton’s Dons will face 15 programs that registered winning seasons in 2003, including Valparaiso who at 27-8 won the Mid-Con, Georgia Tech (34-3) who captured the ACC, North Dakota State at 25-9, Temple University (27-8) who tops the Atlantic 10, and the University of Central Florida (23-7) who blazed through the Atlantic Sun Conference undefeated at 12-0. Add in the likes of LSU out of the SEC, St. John’s from the Big East, and Indiana of the Big Ten, and you’ve got one meat grinder of a schedule.

Howell, who packs a massive arm swing, started off strong in 2003, but injuries slowed her in the last half of the season. Howell registered 220 kills and 116 digs and was named to the AllIndependent All-Freshman Team. Pfister picked up Howell in the latter portions of the season, putting down 107 kills (1.34 per game) to go along with 48 digs.

“We scheduled as tough as possible and play sometimes five times a week,” Hartley Hutton said. “Being an independent, it is challenging enough just to get matches, and coming off a successful year, it makes it increasingly difficult to even find matches. We are most focused on our RPI (strength of schedule-win/loss ranking).” Even though the Mastodons won 22 games in 2003 and beat a number of teams in the NCAA tournament, they were not offered an invitation due to a lower RPI ranking than some other teams. Hartley Hutton added, “We are so proud of earning an RPI of 79 (out of 311 D-I volleyball programs), but we recognize that it just isn’t good enough to get you into the NCAA tournament.”

Setting the ball is in the steady hands of senior Lindi Bankowski and junior Ashlee Roth. Bankowski, the 2003 AllIndependent Setter of the Year, averaged 10.54 assists per game (1,212) to go along with 303 digs, (2.63 pg), 37 kills, and 32 service aces. “Lindi truly leads by example,” Hartley Hutton said. “Her work ethic is top-notch, and she is very committed to our program. At 5'4", she is one of our better defenders, and she’s someone who touches a lot of balls, slowing them down, allowing us to turn them around in transition. She knows the game extremely well.”

This year’s roster will showcase some depth on offense and an experienced defense but some questions with ball handling. “My biggest concern is ball handling,” Hartley Hutton said. “People say you only lost one hitter (Kirsta Solberg), but she was one of our primary passers every rotation. We lost two other defensive-oriented players (Sarah Leffers and Nicole Ray) who shared time at the libero position and at defensive specialist, so there are our three primary passers. So that being said, our ball handling at this point leaves a lot to be desired, and that is the area we need the most work in.” 2004 IPFW Women’s Volleyball

11

MISSION: POSSIBLE | OPERATION: BURN UP THE COURT

2004 Season Outlook Roth proved to be a solid backup in ’03. When Bankowski went to the bench, Roth averaged nearly six assists per game. Roth also averaged 1.12 digs per game. The service game will also be a strength for IPFW. “What I like about our roster is that we have a variety of serves,” Hartley Hutton explained. “Mixing up serves doesn’t allow passers to get into a rhythm. Nicole (Howell), Peachy Jankowski (Freshman/ Fraser, Mich.), and Fabiana (Souza) can rip top-spin. Then we have Lindi (Bankowski) with a jump float serve, and on the ground Cynara Martins (Freshman/Belo Horizante, Brazil) has an incredibly effective float serve. The float serve is one that can give passers nightmares.” Hartley Hutton’s team has a number of players who excel at different positions. One of those expected to move around and provide a strong defensive effort is sophomore Kristin Mann. “Kris is probably someone we will use in a defensive capacity more,” Hartley Hutton said. “The energy she brought as a substitute last year was fantastic. She is a great competitor with a great attitude, who will do whatever the team needs to win.”

2004 IPFW Women’s Volleyball

Hartley Hutton has brought in players who will fill immediate needs as well. Peachy Jankowski is a talented freshman from Fraser, Mich. “We think Peachy can compete for the open libero position immediately. The libero will serve one rotation this year, and we are excited about her jump serve.” Cynara Martins arrives from familiar territory. Hailing from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the home of Fabiana Souza, Martins reminds Hartley Hutton of a current Mastodon. “She is going to be a player in the mold of Janelle Pollard. She’s not going to overpower anyone unless there isn’t a blocker in front of her, but she’s going to hit shots and score points.” Rounding out the freshman class is Jenny Cole, a local product from Northrop High School. “Jenny Cole is someone who can find her way on the court if she’s willing to scrap, play defense, and handle the ball.” Hartley Hutton summed up the upcoming season this way: “Offensively we do have more depth than on the defensive side. We have a long list of people who at any time can step up. Our starting rotation changed from time to time last year, and I expect the same thing to happen this year, which is a nice situation, and it makes practice very interesting and meaningful,” she said with a smile.

Putting the Student in Student-Athlete

O

ver the last few years, the NCAA and its member colleges and universities have worked hard to emphasize the student in the term student-athlete. Academic standards and rules have been developed and changed to ensure that student-athletes can excel in the classroom as they do in their sports. The result of these reforms has been that studentathletes are more likely than ever before to succeed in the collegiate environment. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program was developed by the NCAA to help prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing field. The focus of the program is on commitments viewed as critical to personal growth: academic excellence, personal development, service and career development. In addition, NCAA schools work hard to offer further academic support programs to help student-athletes prosper. These programs offer access to study facilities and tutors as well as monitor student-athlete progress. One result of these programs is that NCAA Division I student-athletes have been consistently graduating at a rate higher than the rest of the student body. For the class entering college in 1990, 56 percent of the overall student body at NCAA Division I institutions graduated, while Division I student-athletes graduated at a rate of 58 percent. The rate does not include student-athletes who transfer to and graduate from another institution. Minimum academic requirements that student-athletes must meet to play sports as freshmen in college are one reason for the higher graduation rates. In 1982, a group of college presidents, sponsored by the American Council on Education, proposed a set of minimum academic standards to determine freshman athletics eligibility. The first set of standards was implemented in 1986. They required that freshmen graduate high school with a minimum grade-point average of 2.000 in 11 core academic courses and a minimum standardized test score of 700 on the SAT or 15 on the ACT to be eligible to play sports and receive an athletics scholarship. Five years ago, the number of required core academic courses was raised to 13

2004 IPFW Women’s Volleyball

and in 1996, a grade-point average and test-score sliding index went into effect for Division I. This scale allows studentathletes with higher grades to qualify with lower test scores and vice versa.

Wanna Play? Know the Rules Any high-school student who is interested in playing sports at the NCAA Division I or II level should learn about the standards as early as possible. In addition, high-school student-athletes should talk to their guidance counselors and coaches to learn more. High-school students can also call the NCAA’s Eligibility Hotline, 800/638-3731. This number features recordings with information on a number of freshman eligibility topics, including accommodations for students with learning disabilities. Students can also order a free copy of the “Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete” by calling the hotline and following the prompts. Information about the recruiting process and about initial-eligibility requirements is available online at NCAA Online (www.ncaa.org). The NCAA’s Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse ensures that student-athletes have met the academic requirements and certifies their eligibility to play sports as freshmen. High-school student-athletes aspiring to play Division I or II athletics

should register with the clearinghouse after completing their junior year. Clearinghouse information and registration forms are available from highschool guidance counselors; from the NCAA Eligibility Hotline (800/638-3731) or from the NCAA Clearinghouse, P.O. Box 4044, Iowa City, IA 52243-4044, telephone 319/337-1492. The clearinghouse keeps registered student-athletes informed about the qualifications they have and have not met concerning freshmen eligibility. Once student-athletes are enrolled in college, there are more academic standards to be met. Student-athletes must show continuing progress toward a degree each year, including a minimum number of credits passed. From the junior year on, these standards place great emphasis on progress made toward a specific degree program and ensure that student-athletes don’t accumulate large numbers of credits that won’t help them earn a specific degree. The NCAA also has established various scholarship and grant programs to encourage student-athletes to pursue their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The Degree-Completion Grant program assists those who have exhausted their eligibility for institutional financial aid. There are also Women’s and Ethnic Minority Enhancement programs and several postgraduate scholarship opportunities. The end result? Student-athletes are now more likely than ever to enter their collegiate programs prepared and ready to succeed athletically and academically.
