A Year in Rock Creek Park, Deluxe Edition
War, to its ecological preservation and designation as a federal park in 1890, the same year Yosemite in California became a national park.
The Wild, Wooded Heart of Washington, DC Melanie Choukas-Bradley with photographs by Susan Austin Roth Rock Creek Park is nature’s gem in Washington, DC. Twice the size of famed Central Park in New York City, Rock Creek Park is the wild, wooded heart of the nation’s capital, offering refuge and a keen sense of place for millions of residents and visitors each year. Rock Creek Valley serves as the spine of the national park. Its history is long and storied, from native Indian tribes who fished the creek, hunted the woods, and quarried the rock outcroppings, to Euro-Americans’ claims on the land as mill sites, to widespread deforestation during the American Civil
Melanie Choukas-Bradley, a renowned naturalist, writer, and teacher in the DC area, spent a full year in the national park recording her observations. She walked and skied its trails several times a week and in all weather conditions, observing and recording natural events in such engaging prose and insight that we feel right at home when she explores the park’s many “environmental moments.” As Choukas-Bradley writes: “Rock Creek Park’s legendary ‘wildness’ has inspired not only American Presidents such as John Quincy Adams, who heralded Rock Creek as ‘this romantic glen,’ and Teddy Roosevelt, who led hikes and rockscrambles there, but also other devotees such as Edward O. Wilson, the world-renowned scientist who, as a boy, fondly studied in the park’s environs.” But this is more than a nature book, for Choukas-Bradley makes enlightened connections between the natural cycles of life within the park and her life as both a naturalist and writer and a wife and mother. Woven into her wanderings is an exuberance for the restorative powers of Nature and a yearning for better stewardship of our earthly home. Within these pages, Choukas-Bradley leads us on a personal discovery of the wonders of Rock Creek Park. Enhanced by the beautiful photographs of Susan Austin Roth, we are given the gift of an incredible and unforgettable journey. “Evocative of Thoreau and grounded in Leopold’s land ethic, Melanie Choukas-Bradley in A Year in Rock Creek Park invites readers into an unexpected urban wilderness in the heart of Washington, DC. As a naturalist, her extensive knowledge and keen observations note seasonal changes, and the reader naturally falls in step, as if on one of her walks. Choukas-Bradley paints a sense of place with her poetic descriptions of Nature and the cultural and historical information she imparts about the national park. Drawing on lessons learned from her deep connections to Rock Creek Park, she searches inwardly, reflecting on the interconnectedness of people and the land, realizing that our mutual well-being is dependent on the health of the land, which, in turn, is dependent on our responsible use. I have found another kindred spirit through this engaging book.” —Nancy Nye Hunt, author of Aldo Leopold’s Shack: Nina’s Story
Melanie Choukas-Bradley is a writer, naturalist, and teacher in the DC area and the author of three acclaimed books: City of Trees: The Complete Field Guide to the Trees of Washington, D.C., illustrated by Polly Alexander, now in its third edition (2008), An Illustrated Guide to Eastern Woodland Wildflowers and Trees, illustrated by Tina Thieme Brown (2004), and Sugarloaf: The Mountain’s History, Geology, and Natural Lore, illustrated by Tina Thieme Brown (2003), all published by the University of Virginia Press. She is also a long-time contributor to The Washington Post and other publications, has appeared as an author and guest expert on All Things Considered, The Diane Rehm Show, and The Kojo Nnamdi Show, and, in 2014, was awarded one of four inaugural “Canopy Awards” by Casey Trees, for her efforts to educate people about the trees of Washington, DC. Susan Austin Roth is a writer and photographer residing in the DC area. She is the author and photographer of ten popular gardening books (Rodale Press, Houghton Mifflin, Home Planners, and Better Homes and Gardens) and was honored with three awards from the Garden Writers Association. She worked for seven years as a field editor and assignment photographer for Better Homes and Gardens magazine, and her photographs appear regularly in books, national magazines, and calendars. Recently, she became a Virginia Master Naturalist and volunteers in local and national parks. IPM NORTH AMERICAN NEW BOOK CATALOG

Iluminaciones Jack Parsons with an essay by Frederick Turner How does a photographer learn to see? How does he create his own visual language—as unique as a fingerprint and as inimitable as the voice of a great writer? In Iluminaciones, Jack Parsons’s seventeenth book, he takes the viewer on a very personal, deeply intuitive journey that reveals how he has honed his photographic vision. The answer is subtle—and remarkable: It is by growing into his own photographs. Here he shares with us ninety-one of his favorite photographs taken over the long arc of his stellar career. These are images that, over time, taught him, as he says, “to see the everyday world with new and better eyes,” and that encouraged him “to look deeply instead of glancing and forgetting.”
The photographs in Iluminaciones were taken all over the world, from the vast expanses of America’s desert Southwest to a mosque in Turkey and temples in Laos, Burma, and Japan, of colorful streets in Mexico and Italy to quiet swimming pools in Southern California, from monumental urban landscapes in Eastern Europe to clouds forming over Ireland and Maui. Most of the pictures are of simple, commonplace things and places that we might not give a second glance. Yet Parsons did and in so doing both reveals and celebrates the subtle power and quiet beauty of the everyday. Complemented by the artful commentary of Frederick Turner, Iluminaciones is a stunning visual exploration of the beauty that shines through our world when we take the time to stop and look. “What Jack Parsons has learned from a life of photographing the ordinary and extraordinary in our daily environment he now passes on to us in Iluminaciones. This is a quietly beautiful book full of revelations for those who share his faith that images can teach us the world.” —Lucy R. Lippard, author of Undermining: A Wild Ride through Land Use, Politics, and Art in the Changing West
“Framed and recorded in time, in luminous depth beyond their surfaces, Parsons’s photographs reveal inscapes, with more to say than can be spoken.” —Godfrey Reggio, Director of Koyaanisquatsi

Based in northern England for almost thirty years, Carnegie Publishing has grown to be a significant publisher of high-quality history and non-fiction titles. Specializing in British history, both regional and national, Carnegie is expanding into subject areas of interest to a wider readership both nationally and internationally. Carnegie has very high production standards; their books are very well illustrated, written by established experts in their fields, and yet are aimed at the informed general reader.
Poverty amidst Prosperity
Many observers asserted that many of the poor were thriftless and feckless. They stated that the muckiness of the poor districts was caused by dirty people who did not wish to raise themselves out of the mire. Gradually, however, social investigators began to question these scathing generalizations, arguing that poverty was usually the result of economic conditions over which individuals and families had little or no control.
The urban poor in England, 1834–1914 Carl Chinn Poverty amidst Prosperity is the ideal introduction to those seeking to understand poverty from the grassroots. Its wide range of evidence, clear analysis and strong argument stress the importance of communities and give a voice to those whom traditional history has marginalized.
This book is infused with a sense of social justice and is deeply affected by Carl Chinn’s own background. The families of both his mother and father come from tough working-class streets in Birmingham which were marked out by their ties of kinship and neighborliness as much as by their bad housing and inadequate sanitation.
The upper and middle classes of Victorian England were marked out by their confidence: they boasted that the sun never set on their Empire; they believed they were destined to lead other nations; and they bragged that their civilization was pre-eminent. Their self-belief was assured because they lived in a country that had become rich through industrialization. But amidst great prosperity there was also much poverty. Deprivation and distress were widespread and obvious. In towns and cities, grand public and civic buildings were surrounded by poor dwellings later known as ‘slums’. The poor crowded into these insanitary districts; they rented badly built dwellings with inadequate facilities; they did the dirtiest, hardest and most dangerous jobs; they ate the worst food; they suffered ill health and early deaths. Poverty blighted their lives.

Murder in Victorian Liverpool
Notorious cases and how they were solved
David Parry NEW TITLES
Murder in Lancashire
CARNEGIE PUBLISHING
The thirty-three cases in this excellent book give a unique and fascinating insight into life in the Victorian period, in Liverpool and beyond.
Ian Hunter Murder in Lancashire provides a fascinating insight into policing in the north of England in the 1970s Detective Chief Superintendent Ian Hunter of the CID, retired, is a good old fashioned copper. He has been at the heart of the investigations into some of Lancashire’s most notorious murders, including the ‘Handless Corpse’ Case, the ‘Black Panther’, and the ‘Mad Dog of Pudsey’.
Each true crime is described in precise detail, and a vivid picture painted of the characters and their often wretched lives. David Parry draws on the original reports of the crimes and trials, including fascinating first-hand testimony from the accused and witnesses, and the grave comments of the judges.
In this revealing book, Detective Hunter tells us how, in these and other hideous murders across the county, the perpetrators were finally brought to justice. Modern science can certainly help to convict a criminal, but as these accounts show all too clearly, without instinct, observation and sheer bloody hard work at the start, no case would ever be solved.
All the accused in this book were found guilty, and to further chill the soul, the stark details of their executions are laid out in black and white. What makes this excellent book so haunting, though, is that the author doesn’t sensationalize the accounts, preferring instead to let the cold, hard facts speak for themselves.
Even in his 80s, Ian Hunter is still every inch your traditional British policeman. Tall, broad, warm, honest and friendly, he has the bearing of a man who can be trusted and relied upon, but who also has true grit, the kind of determination needed to sniff out the evidence of a murderer’s guilt. And what’s more, to do it by the book, through sheer bloody hard work.
So when we hear about 25-yearold Richard Morgan we learn that the ‘attack was so vicious that he was propelled across the street’. Or Ann Worthington, whose drunken husband ‘gave her one kick in the abdomen with such force that it broke one of her stays’. And what about poor 9-yearold Alice Barnes, ‘suffocated by a handkerchief that had been pushed down her throat’?

A History NEW TITLES
William Maguire Understanding the past—where we have come from and what has molded us—is important everywhere, and nowhere more so than in Northern Ireland’s largest city.
“… a terrific book: very readable, comprehensive, informative, balanced, useful and beautifuly produced with lots of good photographs and illustrations … a serious and realistic account of the development of the place as well as one which celebrates and enjoys it.”
For 250 years Belfast, though quite unlike anywhere else in Ireland, was similar to many of the other great industrial cities of the United Kingdom. It embraced the industrial revolution wholeheartedly, and witnessed enormous economic success and expansion as a result. In its heyday it was a great port, a powerhouse of linen manufacturing, ship-building, and engineering, and a truly dominant force in the northern Irish economy. As the iconic shell of RMS Titanic was taking shape high above her Queen’s Island birthplace, Edwardian Belfast was near the peak of her economic might. But within the city there developed patterns of community division and conflict—based on religion—which in their severity and seeming permanence have rendered it quite unique among the cities of the British Isles. From the seventeenth-century Ulster plantations to Catholic migration from elsewhere in Ireland, the particular mix of people in Belfast has always been different from everywhere else and has fundamentally shaped the city’s identity and history over successive centuries.
—Paul Harron, Queen’s University
William A. Maguire graduated with a MA (Hons) in Medieval History and English Literature at St Andrews University, and later completed a Ph.D. at Queens University, Belfast. His early career was spent in teaching before being appointed Head of History at the Ulster Museum. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Sam Tranum and Lois Kapila, editors
This fast-paced and gripping novel is politically/historically/ factually accurate and details the political, military and human aspects of conflict in 1940s Ireland
Joe Joyce
Love on the Road 2015 is the result of an international short story contest. Writers from around the world submitted stories about people making connections while travelling and editors Sam Tranum and Lois Kapila chose 12 to include in this anthology. An independent panel of judges chose three of those as the contest’s first-, second-, and third-prize winners. This is the second year that Tranum and Kapila have run the Love on the Road story contest, and this is the second Love on the Road anthology. Literary Traveller reviewed last year’s edition of the Love on the Road anthology, calling it: ‘a collection of “love stories”, but many are not love stories in the conventional sense. They are not fairy tales, and the “happily ever afters” come in many shapes and sizes . . . the twelve short stories that make up this anthology are not overly sentimental. They are not full of flowery descriptions, the protagonists do not wear rose-colored glasses as they view their circumstances. And, as in life, the happy ending isn’t the main concern. Instead all aspects of experience are given a voice—the beginnings, middles, not-so-happy ends, false starts, non-starts, could-have-beens, should-have-beens, maybe-someday-will-bes.’ This year’s edition will have a similar tone. Sam Tranum is an American journalist, author and editor based in Dublin. He is married to co-editor Lois Kapila who is an English journalist and translator based in Dublin. They have covered the energy business, government, politics, and human rights issues around the world. They lived in Kyrgyzstan, the USA and India before moving to Ireland. They started the Love on the Road project while living in Kolkata in 2012 because they needed a change from the sometimes bleak subjects they were covering as journalists.

Joe Joyce’s novel Echoland was set in WWII-era Dublin, a divided city with some looking to Britain as an ally and others to Germany. It introduced young lieutenant Paul Duggan, who was drafted into the army’s intelligence division, G2, and put on the German desk. Assigned to investigate a German spy who appeared to do nothing noteworthy other than write ambiguous letters, Duggan soon got sidetracked. With a twist that brought Irish politics to the forefront, Duggan attempted to help his uncle, a Fianna Fáil backbench TD, in the search for his missing daughter who had possibly been kidnapped. The young lieutenant delved into the double-dealing worlds of spies and politics, where ruthlessness, deviousness and occasional violence prevail, before confronting a surprising secret that challenged everything he had grown up believing. The sequel, Echboeat, picks up Duggan’s wartime story where Echoland left off. Joe Joyce is an Irish writer, playwright and journalist whose latest works include a history of the Guinness family and brewery, The Guinnesses: The Untold Story of Ireland’s Most Successful Family, and a play about James Joyce and Oliver St John Gogarty, The Tower. He is also the author of two thrillers Off the Record and The Trigger Man, published in London and New York, and co-author with Peter Murtagh of The Boss, a seminal book on Irish politics and one of the best-selling non-fiction books published in Ireland. He has worked for a number of national and international newspapers as a staff reporter and freelance journalist, primarily the Irish Times in Dublin and The Guardian in London. He is currently producing a weekly column for the Irish Times from its archives going back to 1859. NOW AVAILABLE Paper US $20.00 ISBN: 978-1-909718-57-9 330 pages

Thickets Wood
Memoir and Murder
Rebecca Reid
Andrew Nugent
A page-turning, ‘unputdownable’ psychological thriller from a critically acclaimed author
A semi-autobiographical murder-mystery written by a former barrister turned Benedictine monk Young, idealistic and eager for life experience, Andrew and his childhood friend, Eoin, leave Strasbourg, where they are both studying, to embark upon a summer hitch-hiking trip through Normandy and Brittany, escaping the political turbulence of the 1968 Student Revolution. Spending their days apart, Eoin and Andrew meet each evening to share their adventures on the road. The purpose of their adventure is the broadening of their world by engaging strangers in conversation, and listening to their stories. It is this opening that brings Eoin to his downfall, as he disappears one evening, only to be discovered dead, in a shallow grave weeks later, propelling Andrew on a climatic hunt to find his killer. In this fictionalized memoir, the drama of close friendship and the dynamic of young love between Andrew and his girlfriend Marianne, is played out against a traumatic murder mystery, where seasoned crime writer Andrew Nugent pens a strikingly tender depiction of friendship and self discovery. Andrew Nugent, OSB, took legal degrees at University College Dublin and at King’s Inns and qualified as a barrister. In 1961, after two years in legal practice, he entered Glenstal Abbey, Limerick. From 1964-1968, he studied theology at the University of Strasbourg, France. It was the era of Vatican II, when everything seemed possible, and it culminated in the Student Revolution of 1968 in France. He was ordained priest in August 1968. Between 1979 and 2001 he spent a total of ten years in a monastery in Nigeria founded by his abbey in Ireland. He has written several books, including The Slow Release Miracle (Paulist Press: 2006), Second Burial for a Black Prince (2010: St Martin’s Press/Minotaur), Soul Murder (2009: St Martin’s Press/Minotaur), and The Four Courts Murder (2005: St Martin’s Press/Minotaur). Thatchbury is a village much like any other, yet beneath the surface flows a stream of angst and superstition. The shadow of Thickets Wood creeps amongst its people like a primeval mist, bringing torment and desperation. Do Charlie Whitehall and young Tommy Tinkit come under its destructive power, driving their minds to despair, or is the darkness a consequence of their own guilt and fear? Thickets Wood is a compelling work of psychological suspense, and Rebecca Reid is an emerging writer to watch. Her self-published first novel, The Coop, was published in 2012 to much critical praise:

Lane Ashfeldt
A quirky, innovative and highly original novel from an acclaimed playwright and award-winning writer
Debut short story collection with a strong sense of place from an author who is carving a name for herself in literary circles both in the UK and Ireland
Tom Stacey has moved into his neighbour’s bedsit. He wasn’t asked. It was just that the door was open and his neighbors have gone on holiday. And it is so much bigger than his own bedsit. Plus, he has a lot to think about these days. The bees for one. He hasn’t seen any but he keeps hearing them, buzzing in the fridge at work, in the overhead lights, in the test equipment in the factory where he has spent the last fifteen years of his working life. They seem to be getting louder and more insistent, and they are beginning to affect the way he goes about his business. Then there is his search for Sarah McCarthy to worry about. Sarah was his first love, when as a teenager, he travelled around the country in the back of a horsebox with his grieving grandfather. But perhaps it is not the bees or the past which is the problem. Perhaps it is his ongoing loneliness. 22 dates with Happy Couples dating agency and nothing to show bar a dent in his bank balance and several complaints about ‘eccentric behavior’. Relationships are all about the details and there are just not enough boxes to tick in the Agency’s personal profile form. Armed with a wax model and a list of criteria, Tom sets out on a quest to create a personal profile to find his ideal match. On his journey, he will meet people just like him, warm but unable to show it, lonely and unable to remedy it, the lost, the misplaced and damaged.

Jason Johnson follows up his first two novels, Woundlicker and Alina, with the tale of Baker Foley, a promising newcomer to the world’s newest sport: professional drinking
The Organised Criminal looks at the price of morality and the lengths a person will go to for family
Sinker thrusts us into the story of Baker Foley. He begins the novel as a sweet, unassuming Irish man who is revealed to be a promising newcomer to the world’s most controversial sport—professional drinking. Ambition fuels his talent as he strives to make something of his life, but he is plagued by worries that he could die from his job, through alcohol poisoning. Frequent fatalities occur, as players often drop dead during games. When his popularity lands him a spot at the infamous Bullfight competition in sun-baked Mallorca, Baker believes that his luck has turned. But when his drunken eye is drawn to a Saudi beauty, her bodyguard steps over and floors him. The bodyguard’s boss—a Saudi oil baron—invites Baker to his magnificent, surreal, Gaudi-designed palace to hear an apology. Baker—joined by his over-ebullient coach Ratface— gets an offer he can’t refuse: “Teach the crazy billionaire Sheikh to drink like a pro and in turn he’ll make you rich.” Later, as illicit lust flares between Baker and the oil baron’s sober wife; he learns the real reason why he has been asked along. It’s a set up, and he’s about to be framed for killing a Sheikh. After three days of industrial-level drinking and dealing with Ratface’s random groping, can Baker break free? “It's to Johnson's credit that the book is accessible and exciting, rattling along like a thriller, barely pausing for breath. It's a cracking book, a jolt to the senses." —The Irish Independent
Jason Johnson is a Northern Ireland-based journalist and author. His debut novel, Woundlicker (2005), is a ferociously raw story set in fraught Belfast times. With this book, and Alina (2006), he has garnered a reputation for his distinctively gritty style of writing. NOW AVAILABLE Paperback US $20.00 224 pages
Spiked with black humor throughout, The Organised Criminal introduces us to Jay O’Reilly reluctantly returning to his family home. A childhood steeped in dysfunction with his family of criminals made him determined never to return, but despite his attempts to leave the past behind, he comes home to bid a final farewell to his recentlydeparted cousin Duncan. Though Jay likes to think he’s turned his back on his community, his lost past still holds a bleak fascination for him. His father, a well-known smuggler in the city with a wealthy, far-reaching empire, comes to him with a proposal. As Jay contemplates the job offer he reacquaints himself with the place and the family he left, only to find that it is exactly as hard, cold and unwelcoming as he remembered. With the anxieties and troubles of Northern Ireland as a back drop, Jay’s story becomes one of fear, family ties and self-worth. When the truth behind his father’s offer is finally revealed, Jay faces the primal struggle between familial bonds and moral obligations. With a comic cynicism, The Organised Criminal looks at the fragile security that holds families and communities together. Gregory’s wry wit draws on questions of ethics and conscience as well as loyalty and unity. Jay’s feelings of loneliness, displacement, dissatisfaction and ultimately hatred have a universality that connects all audiences in a tale of truth-seeking. Jarlath Gregory grew up in Crossmaglen, County Armagh. He has previously published Snapshots (Dublin, Sitric Books, 2001); and G. A. A. Y: One Hundred Ways to Love a Beautiful Loser (Sitric Books, 2005). He lives in Dublin. MAY 2015 Paperback US $18.00 224 pages

“There’s a great élan and dúchas in these sonnets… and [I] took pleasure in the energy of the poems.” —Seamus Heaney ‘My sheaf of poems—took all my life to write’ This new anthology from the acclaimed poet Gabriel Fitzmaurice, whittled down by ‘time and the road’, explores a variety of themes celebrating both the local and the universal. His career as a primary school teacher and principal is at the forefront to many of his observations as he reflects on the worlds of education and childhood, and indeed a child’s perspective of the world. More personal reflections are conveyed as Fitzmaurice comments on the town in which he grew up. Local characters, events and traditions are documented and his admiration for his native town is evident. The poet clearly holds the role of the family in high regard and writes on becoming a father and, in turn, a grandfather for the first time. Love and relationships are integral to Fitzmaurice’s collection and special moments are immortalized in many of his poems, juxtaposed by lighter, more humorous, works. Themes such as an appreciation of the arts, history, sport and the Irish language intersperse the collection as well as a reference to Queen Elizabeth II’s historic visit to Ireland. For over thirty years Gabriel Fitzmaurice taught in the local primary school from which he retired as principal in 2007. He is author of more than fifty books, has translated extensively from the Irish and has edited a number of anthologies of poetry in English and Irish. He has published two volumes of essays and collections of songs and ballads. Poems of his have been set to music and recorded by Brian Kennedy and RTÉ Cór an nÓg with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra., and he frequently broadcasts on radio and television on education and the arts. A Modern Obsession
Barry Flynn Gripping account of intertwined careers of Belfast boxing legends by well-known journalist
Pat Devitt and Derek Beattie A timely and important contribution to the debate on the problem of suicide and related issues, of great interest to professionals working in the field of mental health and all those affected by suicide. In 2011, 525 people died by suicide in Ireland—an increase of 7 percent on the previous year. After these figures were published, the Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, described suicide as ‘a tragedy that we are constantly working to prevent’. Ireland, like most countries, has a national suicide prevention strategy, but there is scant evidence to support most of the initiatives set out in national suicide prevention strategies. In Suicide: A Modern Obsession, Dr. Pat Devitt and Derek Beattie explore suicide in different cultures and historical periods, survey various public-policy approaches to the subject (looking at what works and what doesn’t), investigate links between economic performance and suicide, and provide an in-depth examination of suicide prevention. They also look at the impact of media portrayals of suicide. Finally, they offer practical advice to those dealing with suicide and its aftermath. Dr. Pat Devitt is a Consultant Psychiatrist with a special interest in the area of suicide. Derek Beattie is a Master’s graduate in Social Research from Trinity College Dublin. He has worked in a research capacity with the Health Research Board and for the past four years with the Mental Health Commission, as project officer. MARCH 2015 Paperback US $20.00 224 pages

The boxing saga of John Caldwell and Freddie Gilroy is a story of two world beating Belfast boxers in an era long gone in the social history of Belfast. The two best friends—and Olympic medalists in 1956 for Ireland—became world famous within their sport and their story is one of fame and adulation, coupled with despair and poverty. A story of alcoholism, of troubles, of despair and glory, of rags to riches to rags again. The professional fight between Caldwell and Gilroy on a cold, sober night in October 1962 was dramatic and brutal. Caldwell and Gilroy attracted a crowd of 16,000 people to the King’s Hall. The Cuban Missile Crisis was still ongoing and atomic war was a distinct possibility between the USA and the USSR, but Belfast was more concerned about the fight between its own two super powers at the King’s Hall. From the top of their sporting career, both men would later enter the depths of alcoholism as Belfast and the Troubles impacted on their lives. Best of Enemies is a reflection of society in the 1960s and brings to life a re-lived rivalry which invigorated a generation, binding the social fabric of a city in a sporting event is a hallmark of Irish sporting folklore. Barry Flynn is from Belfast and has been writing on boxing for over a decade. He has worked as a sports broadcaster for BBC Radio Ulster and has contributed to RTÉ, Newstalk and Independent Network Newsin Dublin. He is the author of several books of Irish interest, including three on Irish Boxing: Legends of Irish Boxing, John McNally: Boxing’s Forgotten Hero, and Bernard Dunne: The Ecstasy and the Agony. Conversations on Identity
Alan Bailey
Mark Carruthers
True accounts of the events surrounding the disappearances of fifteen women over twenty years from the point of view of investigating detective Alan Bailey
A series of engaging and insightful interviews with well-known Ulster figures on the topic of what it means to be from that province of Ireland The province of Ulster—nine counties in total, six in Northern Ireland and three in the Republic of Ireland—is an ambiguous and complex patch of Irish soil. Known for the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the Ulster Rugby Team, the Red Hand of Ulster, Monaghan-poet Patrick Kavanagh, among a host other things, Ulster represents an eclectic mix of national and cultural identities, religious ideologies, and political allegiances. The idea of a communal or conclusive Ulster identity seems impossible and questions such as, ‘Are you an Ulsterman/woman? Are you Northern Irish? Are you Irish? What does it mean to be from Ulster? Are you proud to be from Ulster?’, can result in more confusion than certainty. In Alternative Ulsters, BBC NI broadcaster Mark Carruthers has interviewed a host of wellknown artists, writers, journalists, sportspeople, and political figures, all born in Ulster. Each interview begins with the question, ‘Would you say you are an Ulsterman/woman?’ and goes on to explore the complex idea of Ulster identity for those from a province characterized by fragmentation. Interviewees include Seamus Heaney, Ian Paisley, Anna Lo, Gerry Adams, Liam Neeson, Kenneth Branagh and Simon Callow, among others. Mark Carruthers joined BBC Northern Ireland in 1989 and currently presents political programs on television including Sunday Politics, Stormont Today and the new weekly flagship programme The View. Recently, his commitments have also included Good Morning Ulster, Let’s Talk, Spotlight and BBC Newsline. He was nominated for a Royal Television Society award for his work in 2003, and in 2005 he and Donna Traynor lifted a prestigious Irish Film and Television Award for Best News Programme. Between 1993 and 1998 six Irish women, ranging in age from eighteen to twenty eight, disappeared. The area in which these disappearances occurred shortly became known in the media and the public as ‘The Vanishing Triangle.’ To date, none of the missing females have ever been located. These six unsolved cases resulted in the creation of the specialist Garda taskforce Operation T.R.A.C.E. in the hopes of finding a connection between the women, but none was found. The taskforce went on to investigate dozens of unsolved cases of women gone missing in Ireland. Alan Bailey served as the National Coordinator for the taskforce for thirteen years, and the stories in Missing, Presumed all come from his personal experiences. Missing, Presumed sets out in detail the Garda investigations into the disappearances of fifteen women. These women disappeared over a period of twenty years, and in almost half the cases their badly mutilated bodies were recovered, sometimes months later, buried in shallow graves. Each chapter focuses on one woman’s story, from the moment of her disappearance through the investigation up to—when lucky—a conviction. These stories are haunting, terrifying, and true. Alan Bailey served thirteen years as National Coordinator for the specialist Garda taskforce ‘Operation T.R.A.C.E.’ as well as detective Sergeant in charge of the Garda Serious Crime Review Team. The Rise of Dublin as a Global Tech Hub
Overlooked, Forgotten and Uncrowned Classic Albums
Pamela Newenham
Dan Hegarty Foreword by Larry Mullen Jr.
Chronicle of the sudden transformation of Dublin’s Docklands into a global technology hub Once a thriving shipping hub, the Dublin Docklands fell into disrepair in the 1970s-80s. In the late 1990s, the Dublin Docklands Authority set about redeveloping the Docklands area in an attempt to bring technology and enterprise back to Dublin. The arrival of a new European headquarters for Google on the docks changed everything, with a sudden influx of major technology companies firmly initiating the Docklands as ‘The Silicon Docks.’ Silicon Docks: The Rise of Dublin’s IT Industry chronicles the history of the changing Docklands in Dublin. The first-hand experience of Pamela Newenham, a journalist, gives Silicon Docks a unique perspective on the technology boom on the Docks, Dublin, and the whole of Ireland. Other contributors include journalists and business people directly involved in the redevelopment of the Docklands. Silicon Docks contextualizes the impact of the sudden spurt of technology companies, from the sudden rise in real estate and enterprise in the area to the instigation of conferences and the influx of immigrants. The impact of the Silicon Docks is far-reaching and powerful. Pamela Newenham is a business journalist with The Irish Times specializing in the areas of technology, innovation, start-ups and entrepreneurship. She has previously written for the Irish Independent, Irish Examiner, Food & Wine magazine and NUI Maynooth’s ReSearch magazine among other publications. MARCH 2015 Paperback US $20.00 256 pages

Music/ Radio/ Memoir
Radio Caroline was an iconic pirate radio station, immediately capturing the imagination of millions of people when it started broadcasting rabble-rousing, cuttingedge music to Britain and Ireland from international waters in 1964. When he first went out to the radio ship, the Ross Revenge, in December 1985, Steve Conway, a 21-year-old IT executive, was fulfilling his dream of working on Caroline. Despite his young age, he soon became a vital part of Caroline’s renegade crew, broadcasting music and news programs, helping keep the vessel seaworthy during fierce storms, and making sure the station ran smoothly on a shoestring budget. He did this all despite staffing problems, technical crises and persistent harassment by the authorities. In this gripping memoir, Steve Conway tells of his time aboard the Ross Revenge: the excitement and danger of living on board the ship for long spells, the constant challenge of keeping complex electronic equipment working in occasionally treacherous conditions (including the collapse of the ship’s main mast in November 1987), and the camaraderie of working alongside people who, like him, were completely committed to the radio station and its fiercely bohemian ideals. His wild and wonderful tale builds towards the sad demise of Radio Caroline as a ship-based station, recounting how he and his few remaining companions narrowly escaped drowning after the ship ran aground on the notorious Goodwin Sands in hurricane-force winds in November 1991. This is the true story of the “boat that rocked”.

Explaining Libertarianism Philosophical Arguments J C Lester A clear and authoritative discussion of the philosophical underpinnings of Libertarianism Liberty is so supremely important to the entire human world; it seems desirable to try to put four main tenets as clearly and concisely as the philosophical complexity of the subject will allow: (1) Interpersonal liberty requires an explicit, “prepropertarian,” and purely factual, theory. (2) Liberty is—and need only be—morally desirable in systematic practice, not in every logically possible case. In practice, there is no clash between the two main moral contenders: rights and consequences. (3) It is logically impossible to justify, ground, or support any theory of liberty or its applications. Theories can only be explained, criticized, and defended within conjectural frameworks. (4) The state is inherently authoritarian and also negativesum. It reduces welfare overall, with the losses compounding over time. Libertarian anarchic order is the positive-sum solution to illiberal political chaos. J C Lester is a libertarian philosopher and the author of Escape from Leviathan and Dictionary of Anti-Politics (forthcoming), plus the philosophical dialogues The Naked Politician and The Philosophical Genie, as well as many scholarly and popular articles on libertarian matters. The Terrible Ones
• A magisterial publication: two volumes of over 650 pages each, including 80 maps and 600 photographs, most of which have never been seen before.
The Complete History of 32 Battalion (two volumes)
• There is a dedicated market for books on the subject. Piet Nortje’s first 32 Battalion book has sold over 26,000 copies.
Piet Nortje The Terrible Ones provides a complete picture with new insights, drawing from thousands of pages of documents in the Department of Defence Documentation Centre that have only recently been declassified. Definitive and magisterial, this is one of the most impressive military histories ever written. The soldiers of 32 Battalion were so feared by their enemies that they were called ‘Os Terriveis’—‘The Terrible Ones’. Founded in utmost secrecy from the vanquished remnants of an Angolan rebel movement, they were forged into an effective fighting machine that took on guerrilla forces and conventional armies alike. Undefeated in 12 years of frontline battle, the ‘Buffalo Soldiers’ became the South African Army’s best combat unit since World War II. This comprehensive two-volume work chronicles the unit’s explosive history. Starting in the early 1960s, it covers events in Angola that would eventually result in the formation of 32 Battalion, and it ends in the 2000s, when the soldiers of the unit unknowingly betrayed themselves. It describes in detail the 117 documented military operations that 32 Battalion took part in from 1976 to 1993, explaining how they were planned and executed, and illustrating them with maps. It also provides personal recollections from former 32 Battalion members and their allies and enemies, vividly recreating the experience of what happened on the ground.

If you are accused of a crime you did not commit, do you believe that justice will prevail in a court of law? Perhaps you should think again … An innocent woman is almost sent to prison for eight years because of a mistaken fingerprint identification by so-called forensic experts; a chicken farmer is hanged for a brutal murder he did not commit due to incorrect analysis of postmortem bruising; and a mother is sent to prison for murdering her baby daughter when a substance is falsely identified as blood … These are just some of the major forensic disasters that have occurred over the past 100 years, and which are exposed in Justice Denied. Contrary to what television series like CSI and NCIS would have one believe, forensic science does not provide instant answers to impenetrable crimes; in reality, forensic science is neither clear-cut nor easy to interpret, and practitioners are not all competent—as renowned forensic scientist Dr. David Klatzow proves in this book. He exposes the miscarriages of justice resulting from the faulty courtroom testimony of corrupt or incompetent forensic pathologists and unscrupulous public prosecutors who seek convictions at all costs. From the infamous Dr. Crippen case in 19th-century England to the dingo–baby trial in Australia and the unsolved murder of Inge Lotz, Justice Denied reveals the incalculable damage done both to people’s lives and to justice across the globe. Justice, while age-old, is not always served when bad science plays a hand.

Constand and Abraham Viljoen and the Birth of the New South Africa
Steve Hofmeyr A photographic celebration of the life and career of Afrikaans music’s superstar published in the year he turns 50 and celebrating his 25 years in the music business, this book is a must-have for all Steve Hofmeyr fans.
Dennis Cruywagen The fascinating story of Constand and Abraham Viljoen, identical twins who stood on opposite political sides but came together to prevent civil war in South Africa. Abraham and Constand Viljoen were identical twins who took starkly different paths in life. One was a deeply religious man, who opposed apartheid; the other was a man of war, who became head of the SADF. But together they would play a crucial role in preventing South Africa from descending into civil war. In the early 1990s, Constand came out of retirement to head the Afrikaner Volksfront, which opposed the negotiations with the ANC and made plans for military action. Realizing that war would destroy their country, Abraham approached his estranged brother and urged him to consider the alternative: talks with the ANC. What followed was a series of secret meetings and negotiations that ultimately prevented civil war. Brothers in War and Peace documents the crucial yet largely unheralded role the Viljoen brothers played in ensuring peace in South Africa. Based on interviews with the brothers and other key political figures, the book gives new insights into a time when the country’s future was on a knife-edge. Dennis Cruywagen is an acclaimed South African journalist and political commentator. He is a former deputy editor of the Pretoria News, and was a political reporter on the Cape Argus. He is a recipient of a Nieman Fellowship and a Mason Fellowship at Harvard University, and holds a master’s degree from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He is a former parliamentary spokesperson for the ANC. MARCH 2015 Paperback US $20.00 280 pages

The Campaign in South West Africa, 1914–1915
Allison Fast Illustrated by Wendy Paterson
Adam Cruise A fascinating account of South African Prime Minister Louis Botha’s successful campaign in German South West Africa during the First World War. Louis Botha was prime minister of the Union of South Africa when Britain declared war on Germany in 1914. As South Africa was a dominion of the British Empire, Botha was asked to lead his country on a campaign against the Germans across the border in South West Africa. In light of the relatively recent Anglo-Boer War, many Afrikaners balked at the request, but the prime minister was committed politically to unifying Boer and Brit and came down heavily in favor of taking up arms against Germany. So began a war on two fronts. While Union Defence Force troops gathered on the border and prepared to launch an offensive, a handful of Botha’s former comrades incited an Afrikaner rebellion intent on keeping South Africa out of the war, or worse, siding with Germany. Louis Botha’s War is the story of how a former Boer War fighting-general-turned-politician crushed a rebellion, rallied his country’s first united army to fight in harsh conditions and defeated the enemy in the Great War’s first successful Allied campaign. Botha’s actions and these events would determine the fate of South West Africa, and its relationship with its southern neighbor, for the next eighty years. Adam Cruise was born in Johannesburg and studied at the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University. He is a travel writer who has published articles in a variety of magazines and newspapers, as well as a book, In the Pursuit of Solitude, about a sixmonth journey through the remote recesses of southern Africa. He is also a conservation correspondent, whose commentary on significant wildlife matters such as the current elephant and rhino crises has been widely publicized. He currently lives in Nice, France. Marigold and the Faraway Tree is the story of a nine-year-old girl whose relationship with an old tree guides her through an important transition phase in her life. This charming story was inspired by the existence of a true-life tree growing at Imhoff Farm, behind the Blue Water Café, next door to the Higgley Piggeldy Farmyard in Kommetjie, not too far from Cape Point, one of the southernmost points of Africa. It is a simple tale of universal wisdom that will not only engage young readers, but teach them an important life lesson as well. Children will be able to think about concepts such as kindness, happiness and friendship. The author, Alison Fast, believes that the best stories are homegrown and involve simple things such as a village, a character or even the change of seasons, interwoven with imagination, curiosity and wonderment. The charming illustrations by Wendy Paterson will enchant readers both young and old as they complement this simple but appealing story. Alison Fast is a documentary filmmaker who loves storytelling across all mediums. Her inspiration comes from travelling, spending time in nature and leading community-based storytelling workshops. She lives in Los Angeles and New York, in the US. Marigold and the Faraway Tree is her first children’s book. RANDOM HOUSE STRUIK
This book takes the reader into an enchanted world where animals can talk and humans are often changed into different forms, where magic is commonplace and reality is turned delightfully on its head. Africa has a wonderfully rich store of folk tales that have been passed down from one generation to the next. There are stories about how the world came into being, stories that tell of the relationships between human beings and between man and his environment, and of the lessons to be learned from everyday experience. The tales are like the fairy tales told all over the world, but they have a strong African flavor that is as real as the smell of rain on hot earth. Despite numerous setbacks, things usually turn out all right in the end. Wicked and greedy people (and animals) come off worst and the good receive their just rewards. The gods are stern but fair, and every story has a moral for those who are wise enough to see it. The late Phyllis Savory was a well-established collector and reteller of African tales. This, her last collection of folklore, comprises 39 stories drawn from all parts of southern Africa and further afield. Illustrated with detailed drawings by Gina Daniel, it will delight adults as well as children. True to the spirit of African stories, the tales are especially suitable for reading aloud. Anyone who longs for a beloved grandmother’s famous milk tart or melkkos, or a great aunt’s delicious bobotie or vetkoek, should have this book in his or her kitchen! Traditional South African Cooking is a collection of wellknown South African recipes that will enable the modern cook to continue the tradition and produce the same delicious meals that our ancestors used to enjoy. South African cuisine is a unique blend of the culinary art of many different cultures. Dutch, French, German and British settlers, as well as the Malays who came from the East, all brought their own recipes to this country. The subtle adaptation of these ‘imported’ recipes by the addition of local ingredients and the introduction of innovative (at the time) cooking methods resulted in an original and much-loved cuisine that still sits comfortably alongside contemporary cooking. Soups, Starters & Snacks; Fish & Seafood; Poultry; Meat; Game & Game Birds; Vegetables, Salads & Side Dishes; Desserts; Biscuits, Scones, Cakes & Sweet Tarts; Bread and Rusks; Sweets & Sweetmeats: Preserves, Jams & Jellies; Pickles & Chutneys; Fruit Drinks, Beers & Liqueurs; Index. Magdaleen van Wyk is the author and co-author of a number of cookbooks, including The Complete South African Cookbook, published by Struik Lifestyle. A retired lecturer at the Department of Consumer Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Stellenbosch, Magdaleen was awarded medals by Silwood Kitchen School of Cookery in Cape Town and the SA Brandy Foundation. Pat Barton, a freelance writer, editor and translator, has collaborated on a number of cookbooks. She compiled the original The Complete South African Kilojoule, Calorie and Carbohydrate Counter, published by Struik Lifestyle.

Orania
The Thunder That Roars
Photographs by Michael Hammond Text by Hanlie Retief
Imran Garda A successful young journalist’s search for a missing Zimbabwean friend takes him to places he could never have imagined in this gripping, fast-paced novel.
This book of photographs captures the controversial South African town of Orania, its people, architecture and landscapes, with vignettes by renowned journalist Hanlie Retief. Orania is not located along any main route. In the barren Northern Cape in South Africa, somewhere on the R369 between Hopetown and Petrusville lies this town that has been steeped in controversy since its establishment as a nation state exclusively for white Afrikaners. Orania was founded in 1990 by the son-in-law of Hendrik Verwoerd, the architect of apartheid. It is a town of unusual combinations: a thousand white people and many thousands of pecan trees; the arid Karoo and the green banks of the Orange River; the ideology of some and the opportunism of others. People wonder about Orania. What is it like? What type of person would live there? Are there entrance gates? Is it neoapartheid? Photographer Michael Hammond aims his camera at the people of Orania, while accompanying narratives by writer Hanlie Retief provide a glimpse into their lives. Michael Hammond studied photography at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, where he specialized in portrait and creative photography. He was news photographer at Die Burger, Rapport, Beeld and Volksblad. He works in Cape Town, South Africa, as a commercial photographer. His interests are documentary photography and visual anthropology. Hanlie Retief is a journalist and the writer of the biography Byleveld. She is well known in South Africa for her weekly interviews with prominent people in Rapport newspaper. In 2011 a selection of her interviews was published in her book Hanlie Retief gesels met. Among the journalism awards that she has received are the Sikuvile and Piet Cillié awards, as well as Media24 Legends, ATKVMediaveertjies and a Cum Laude Alumni award from the University of the Free State. Richard Peirce and Jacqui Peirce
In 1998 a young South African arrives in Brooklyn, New York. He becomes barman at The Alibi, a dive full of blue-collar workers, drug dealers, music lovers and Guinness. At The Alibi, locals play pool and watch Jeopardy! as A-listers from Manhattan eye their rundown neighborhood’s tree-lined avenues and buy up its historical brownstones. Soon soy milk and organic vegetables take up shelf space where cheap cleaning products and anemic limes used to be. The Alibi is also the place from where they experience the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, which leaves New York dripping with distrust while terror ripens on its sidewalks. The Alibi Club, Jaco van Schalkwyk’s poignant debut novel, is a unique document about a city, a neighbourhood, and the lives of individuals changed irrevocably. Jaco van Schalkwyk studied fine art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He is an artist and musician and the great-grandson of prominent Afrikaans poet A.G. Visser. This is the story of Higgins and Lady, two rhinos on a game reserve in South Africa that defied the odds by surviving a brutal attack. Color images throughout, taken as the drama unfolded, bring the subject even more vividly to life. When wildlife conservationist Richard Peirce learnt about the targeting of three private game reserves in South Africa’s Western Cape in 2011 and the butchery of some of their rhinos, he embarked on a crusade to raise public awareness about the horrors of rhino poaching. This is the story of Higgins and Lady, two rhinos from the farm Fairy Glen that defied the odds by surviving a brutal attack. Peirce keeps the reader spellbound as he recounts the series of attacks and their aftermath in chilling detail: the unbearable savagery, suspect police work, shady characters, mysterious happenings and death threats. Reading like a crime thriller, this account of dogged survival, compassion and triumph—along with desperate strategizing to outwit the poaching mafia—will have wide appeal. Color images throughout, taken as the drama unfolded, bring the subject even more vividly to life. Richard Peirce and his wife Jacqui Peirce are confirmed nomads who spend half the year in South Africa; their love of wildlife takes them to the bush at every opportunity. Richard Peirce is best known as a shark conservationist—his main focus for over 20 years. Chairman of the Shark Conservation Society and the Shark Trust, he has authored several books on the topic. Originally published by the Standard Bank as part of a curated exhibition in May 2011, this prestigious volume celebrates the life and works of Peter Clarke (1929–2014), one of South Africa’s foremost artists. A mere 500 copies were originally published, all taken up at the exhibition, and continued demand has led to its re-release. Clarke left his job as a dockworker in Simon’s Town to devote himself to art. The wisdom of this decision is reflected in a remarkable career, which extended over some six decades and was acknowledged in the awards of the Order of Ikhamanga (silver) in 2005 and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. Listening to Distant Thunder: The Art of Peter Clarke recounts an artist’s life in the context of the social history of South Africa from the 1940s onwards. His images reflect the social disruption of the Cape Flats, and the trauma of his community’s forced removal from Simon’s Town to the bleak apartheid township of Ocean View. Yet Clarke’s images have avoided bitterness, and his work is a perceptive scrutiny and celebration of life in all its aspects. Illustrated with over 200 reproductions and photographs, this book was researched and written by well-known South African art historians Philippa Hobbs and Elizabeth Rankin, in close collaboration with the artist over almost seven years.

A Photographic Guide: Snakes, other Reptiles and Amphibians of East Africa
An Untamed Force
Bill Branch
This beautifully presented book showcases some of South African sculptor Dylan Lewis’ most ambitious works in a series of dramatic photographs, and includes images of preliminary sketches and working methods.
Comprehensively revised, expanded and updated, this compact photographic guide makes the ideal travelling companion on trips to the wildlife areas and nature reserves of East Africa.
The towering sculptures of Dylan Lewis are becoming wellknown landmarks in South Africa, where they grace botanical gardens, golf courses, the foyers of sophisticated buildings and the halls of discerning collectors. Increasingly, they are being snapped up by galleries and institutions abroad.
This compact guide to East Africa’s snakes, other reptiles and amphibians has long been a trusted travelling companion on trips to the wildlife areas and nature reserves of the region. Now comprehensively revised, expanded and updated, this new edition features • authoritative text describing key identification features;
This volume builds on an earlier publication, bringing the photographic record of Dylan Lewis’ work up to date. The brief text reveals how the sculptor’s boyhood in a happily bohemian, nature-loving family inspired him, and traces his artistic development, from what have come to be known as ‘the cat years’ to his current, more esoteric and mythical approach.
• full-color photographs illustrating 274 of the most commonly encountered, rare and beautiful species; • distribution maps showing the range of each species; • thumbnail outlines of each family group, enabling quick identification.
Co-developed with poet and kindred spirit Ian McCallum, who helps explain some of the formative influences at play, this classy and beautifully presented book showcases some of Lewis’ most ambitious and successful works in a series of dramatic photographs, and includes images of preliminary sketches and working methods.
Bill Branch is a well-known herpetologist and author of a range of books and papers on African reptiles and amphibians. He has done extensive fieldwork in over 20 African countries and has described over 40 new species. Bill has served on international conservation committees and co-authored the Atlas and Red List of South African Reptiles. He holds a doctorate in Zoology from the University of Southampton.
Born in Johannesburg in 1964, Dylan Lewis grew up in a family that valued and explored the natural environment and was also actively engaged in the arts world. His parents were both accomplished artists— his father a sculptor and his mother a painter. Lewis has pulled together the twin influences of wildlife and the arts and evolved into one of the country’s foremost artists, with growing influence abroad. He has exhibited widely—both in North America and the UK—and his works have found their way around the world. A powerful and influential figure in the world of sculpture, he lives on an estate outside Stellenbosch.

Shipwreck Stories
Following War Stories, Shark Stories and African Stories in the series, this book about shipwrecks and diving will make riveting reading like all of Al J. Venter’s books. There are hundreds of illustrations, sketches, photos, diagrams, plans as well as five color sections. The book runs to 30 chapters and is the fourth in Al Venter’s series of Southern African “stories”. Pulling together with a bunch of friends, Venter has created a book on shipwrecks that is both fascinating and beautiful.
Al J. Venter and Friends This book covers scores of shipwrecks —East Indiamen, warships from before and after the Napoleonic era, nineteenthcentury steamships, trawlers, some modern freighters that courted disaster, whalers and a handful that have never been properly identified.
Al J. Venter, now living in the UK, has written over 40 war books, including Allah’s Bomb, Iran’s Nuclear Option, and Iraqi War Debrief, and most recently, War Stories, Shark Stories and African Stories for Protea Book House.
Not everybody is aware that the ships that rounded the South African coast over the past five centuries are as closely linked to the history of South Africa as gold and diamonds. They were treasures then, they are all treasures today. The difference is that about 3000 ships were lost rounding the Cape of Good Hope some centuries ago on their way to and from the Spice Islands of the East. It has taken a rare brand of adventurer to discover the undersea locations of many of them and Al Venter and his friends detail their activities.

The Hunter Is Death
The Thirstland Trek 1874–1881
Through George Rushby’s many adventures, one is swept away to the romanticism of Africa in the twentieth century—when nature was king and man its humble subject.
Nicol Stassen
The Hunter Is Death tells the fascinating story of the life of George Rushby. As a child in England, Rushby devoured every book written about hunting in Africa. As soon as he set foot on African soil, the continent captured his heart. Starting out as a foreigner in a primitive land with no skill in hunting, he gradually evolved into one of Africa’s greatest hunters and adventurers. As ivory hunter, farmer, prospector, game ranger, conservationist, and eventually the man who defeated the dreaded man-eating lions of the Njombe district, he crossed paths with intriguing characters from different corners of the world. He came face to face with majestic elephants, poachers, witchcraft, cults and countless other challenges which he took on with an open mind and a sense of humor. The continent of Africa has for a long time produced its share of bush stories, some carried down generations, others more recent. Readers interested in traveling, travel writing, history and natural history will enjoy this book. Thomas Victor Bulpin (1918–1999) was a writer about African big game hunters, South African travel and history. He was a wellknown and very prolific travel writer—he wrote 29 books and thousands of pamphlets and features on southern Africa for magazines and newspapers. An inveterate traveler, he was the author of classics such as Islands in a Forgotten Sea, The Ivory Trail and the Illustrated Guide to Southern Africa.

From 1874 to 1881, a number of organized treks left the Transvaal in search of political independence and better living conditions. These socalled Thirstland treks were complex phenomena as a result of economic, religious and political factors. During the late nineteenth century a number of organized treks left the Transvaal. The first of these left the ZAR in May 1874. Seven years later, in January 1881, after the amalgamation of the first three treks, they settled at Humpata on the Hufla highlands in the Portuguese colony of Angola. From 1892 to 1894 three further major treks followed. After the last major trek in 1907 the Portuguese government prohibited further treks. In 1928 about 2,000 Angola Boers were repatriated to South-West Africa, while 380-470 remained in Angola. Initially, resistance to the “irreligious” and the “liberal” government of T.F. Burgers was the most important reason for the trek but they continued in search of establishing a better life in general. Nicol Stassen has a bachelor’s degree in Languages, a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a doctorate in History. He is a research fellow at the University of Pretoria. His previous publications were William Chapman: Reminiscenses (2010) and The Boers in Angola, 1928–1975 (2011). MAY 2015 Hardcover US $33.00 712 pages

Forged in Battle follows the development of 32 Battalion from former enemies and terrorists into one of the best counterinsurgency forces and decorated units in the SA Defence Force. In 1975, 32 Battalion was formed in great secrecy from a group of badly trained, illdisciplined remnants of the Angolan guerrilla movement, the FNLA. Founding commander Colonel Jan Breytenbach, a former Recce, tells of the birth and early history of this elite “Buffalo” Battalion led by South African officers. He turned these unwanted orphans from the Angolan guerrilla war into one of the most respected and feared units to fight in Angola. His method was a simple one—he instilled in his soldiers a total commitment and loyalty to the unit, rather than to a country or cause. Nicknamed Os Terríveis (the Terrible Ones), they became one of the best counter-insurgency forces in the SADF. Forged in Battle follows the birth and growth of 32 Battalion from former enemies and terrorists into decorated soldiers. Colonel Jan Breytenbach, a living legend in South Africa, was the creator of three elite units of the SA Army: 1 Recce Commando, 32 Battalion and 44 Para Brigade. He led the successful assault on SWAPO’s main base at Cassinga in 1978—believed to be the largest airborne assault anywhere since World War II. He also formed the South African Army’s Guerrilla School, which he commanded until his retirement in 1987. He is the author of several books including Eden’s Exiles, The Buffalo Soldiers and They Live by the Sword.

A rich selection of photographs and memorabilia from archives in New Zealand and Italy illustrates the work. Stefano Fusi is a Provincial Councilor in Florence, Italy. He discovered the story of New Zealand’s liberation of the Chianti region while serving as Mayor of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, a community in the Chianti region between Florence and Siena. Jill Gabriel translated To the Gateways of Florence; Jill is a teacher and translator originally from Wellington, New Zealand who has called Tavarnelle her home since the 1980s. Bronwyn Elsmore The seminal work on the interaction of New Zealand’s indigenous population with the Old Testament message brought by missionaries in the 19th century The arrival of European missionaries in New Zealand had an immeasurable impact on Maori ¯ society. Like Them That Dream tells the intriguing story of early interaction between Maori ¯ and missionary, leading to the many distinctive responses to the arrival of Christianity. The book’s first two parts consider how the Christian word was spread and how Maori ¯ responded, explaining the identification they felt with the Israelites of the Old Testament. The third part relates the rise of indigenous religious movements, from the early Papahurihia through Pai Marire, Ringatu and the Parihaka Movement, and the later incarnations of the Arowhenua Movement in the South Island and what remains today’s leading Maori ¯ church, Ratana. Bronwyn Elsmore is a recognized authority on Maori ¯ religions and early spiritual interaction with Christianity. Brilliant overview of Maori ¯ leadership and history from pre-European times to present day with text in Maori, ¯ English and Musqueam (language of the First Nations people of Vancouver) From a leading Maori ¯ scholar and a renowned photographer comes this beautifully illustrated work that serves as a fine overview of leadership and challenges for Maori ¯ today. After a general introduction to Maori ¯ history, Te Ara focuses on the stories of iwi (tribes) in five regions—Hokianga, Peowhairangi (Bay of Islands) T¯amaki Makaurau (Auckland), Waiariki (Rotorua-Taupo) and Murihiku (Otago-Southland). This is a trilingual publication—in English, Maori ¯ and Musqueam, the rarely published language of the Canadian First Peoples band in the Vancouver region. This is a work of value for general readers, visitors, and students of the contemporary challenges facing indigenous communities. Te Ara grew out of an exhibition and combines succinct text (in English, Maori ¯ and Musqueam) with stunning photos that spotlight leadership in Maori ¯ culture. The best basic introduction to this important episode in British colonial history; summarizes complex history in simple terms suitable for readers from intermediate age onwards From 1845 to 1875, New Zealand experienced a succession of conflicts that stretched from the Bay of Islands to Wellington. What they meant has been debated ever since. To some they were land wars, to others, the Maori ¯ wars; lately we are calling them the New Zealand wars. Why were they fought? Who really won them? In reality these wars were fought over both land and sovereignty. In the process, the British, settlers and allied Maori ¯ ended up fighting other Maori, ¯ and by the late 1860s the wars had really become a civil war. And the fighting was tough for all who fought in them. Matthew Wright outlines what happened and why. Matthew Wright is one of New Zealand’s best-known popular historians, having authored more than 50 books. Wright’s most recent works are the Bateman Illustrated History of New Zealand and Trains, Tunnels and Bridges. He lives in Wellington. MARCH 2015 Paperback US $20.00 88 pages

Maori ¯ myths and legends have an important role in transmitting and regenerating traditional knowledge. Yet as Ross Calman points out in his introduction to this new edition, they are also simply great yarns—reflective of a time when telling and listening to stories was a key leisure activity in Maori ¯ society. Favourite Maori ¯ Legends is an invitation to enjoy over 30 of the most memorable legends, grouped into themes of the spirit world, patupaiarehe (ghosts), taniwha, supernatural creatures, heroes and deeds of daring. Concise yet complete, these gripping stories are enlivened by the timeless illustrations of Roger Hart. A.W. Reed (1908–1979) was one of New Zealand’s most influential writers and publishers. Meeting the Globalisation Challenge Smart and Innovative SMEs in a Globally Competitive Environment Bernice Kotey, Tim Mazzarol, Delwyn Clark, Dennis Foley, and Tui McKeown Meeting the Globalisation Challenge is the first of a series of annual publications from the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand (SEAANZ) targeted at those with an interest in the small to medium enterprise (SME) sector. SEAANZ has launched this work in order to provide a more accessible source of information for readers than is possible with traditional academic journals. This book brings together authors who represent a cross-section of the ‘four pillars’ that comprise the SEAANZ community—academic researchers, educators, public policy specialists and practitioners from the small business sector. Many SME owners are doing it tough in an uncertain environment where margins are squeezed and returns reduced. More than ever, Australasian SMEs are facing a unique combination of global, structural and cyclical forces than threaten their ability to take advantage of emerging opportunities. These threats—including rapid technological change, intense global competition, and unfavourable trading conditions—cumulatively create significant environmental uncertainty for SMEs. Meeting the Globalisation Challenge: Smart and Innovative SMEs in a Globally Competitive Environment identifies ways SMEs can tackle these challenges. The book comprises twelve chapters, organised into three parts. Readers are introduced to the sources of innovation in SMEs, proposals to reduce the regulatory burden for the sector, and systems that support innovation in SMEs in times of change.

Prices, Interest Rates and Aggregate Output A Macroeconomics Overview Jerry Mushin Prices, Interest Rates and Aggregate Output is an introduction to macroeconomic theory and policy. It provides the background of numerous issues that are of current importance. Although its primary purpose is to serve as a resource for undergraduate students, it will also be useful to other readers. Theory is related to practical issues. Particular attention is devoted to open-economy theory and the international constraints on the domestic economy. As is usual in economic matters, the conclusions are frequently tentative. Economic theory does not always provide answers. It does, however, encourage people to ask useful questions. Despite being an introduction to the subject, its approach is not superficial, and complex issues are not ignored.

It provides students with a foundation of ideas and understandings designed to shape their thinking and behavior so as to appreciate the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in modern economies, and to recognize their own abilities in this regard. Aimed at students studying entrepreneurship at both postgraduate and undergraduate level, this book creates entrepreneurial awareness, develops analytical and creative skills, and encourages the self-development of students into entrepreneurial business owners or employees. Religious Myths and Visions of America God and Apple Pie Christopher Buck
Religious Myths and Visions of America
Buck examines the distinctive perspectives held by ten religious God and Apple Pie traditions that inform and expand on the notion of America and its place in the CHRISTOPHER BUCK world. He covers Native American, Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Mormon, Christian Identity, Black Muslim, Islamic, Buddhist, and Bahá’í beliefs and invites serious reflection on what it means to be an American, particularly from a religious perspective At the heart of American studies is the idea of America itself. Here, Buck looks at the religious significance of America by examining those religions that have attached some kind of spiritual meaning to America. The author explores how American Protestantism and nine minority faiths have projected America into the mainstream of world history by defining—and redefining— America’s world role. Surveying the religious myths and visions of America relative to these ten religions, Buck shows how minority faiths have redefined America’s sense of national purpose. Religious myths of America are thought-orienting narratives that serve as vehicles of spiritual and social truths about the United States itself. Religious visions of America are action-oriented agendas that articulate the goals to which America should aspire and the role it should play in the community of nations.
“This is an ambitious and unique work, covering a broad range of religious visions of America in their global context. Buck’s firm theoretical framework and rigorous documentation make this a significant contribution to contemporary discussions of the place, role, and future of the diversity of religions that make up America today.” —Andrew Rippin, University of Victoria, Canada
Christopher Buck is a Pennsylvania attorney and independent scholar who has taught at Michigan State University, Quincy University, Millikin University, and Carleton University. That is the question: are we going to make it—is the human race going to find the redeeming and transforming understanding of our ‘good and evil’afflicted human condition— or is our species headed for terminal psychosis and alienation? Humankind is in the balance: will it be selfdestruction or self-discovery? Well, astonishing as it is, this book by biologist Jeremy Griffith presents the 11th hour breakthrough biological explanation of the human condition needed for the psychological rehabilitation and maturation of the human race! IS IT TO BE is the concise presentation of Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith’s breakthrough biological synthesis on the human condition. Containing the culmination of 40 years of studying and writing about our species’ psychosis, IS IT TO BE delivers nothing less than the holy grail of insight we have sought for the psychological rehabilitation of the human race. It is, in short, ‘the book that will save the world’—a claim that no doubt appears absolutely extraordinary but one that is endorsed by Professor Harry Prosen, former president of the Canadian Psychiatric Association, who has written the Introduction to the book. Griffith has been able to venture right to the bottom of the dark depths of what it is to be human and return with the fully accountable, true explanation of our seemingly imperfect lives. At long last we have the redeeming and thus transforming understanding of human behavior! And with

that explanation found all the other great outstanding scientific mysteries about our existence are now also able to be truthfully explained—of the meaning of our existence, of the origin of our unconditionally selfless moral instincts, and of why we humans became conscious when other animals haven’t. Yes, the full story of life on Earth can finally be told—and all of these incredible breakthroughs and insights are presented here in this ‘greatest of all books’. ‘What this book of books, indeed this greatest of all books, does is take humanity from a state of bewilderment about the nature of human behavior and existence to a state of profound understanding of our lives. It is truly a case of having got all the truth up in one go—understanding has finally emerged to drain away all the pain, suffering, confusion and conflict from the world. This is it—THE BOOK THAT SAVES THE WORLD!’ —from the Introduction
Jeremy Griffith is an Australian biologist who has dedicated his life to bringing fully accountable, biological understanding to the dilemma of the human condition—the underlying issue in all human life of our species’ extraordinary capacity for what has been called ‘good’ and ‘evil’. Harry Prosen is a professor of psychiatry who has worked in the field for over 50 years, including chairing two departments of psychiatry and serving as president of the Canadian Psychiatric Association. Professor Prosen was recently appointed one of 500 Specially Selected Fellows of the American College of Psychiatrists, and a Distinguished Life Member of the American Psychiatric Association. He is also psychiatric consultant to the Bonobo Species Preservation Society. MARCH 2015 Paperback US $22.95 640 pages 6 ¼ x 9 ¼

A Species in Denial Jeremy Griffith Charles Birch, Foreword
Charles Darwin connected humans with nature but there biology has been stalled, unable to explain the dilemma of the human condition. Griffith’s answer defends and dignifies humans; it lifts the burden of guilt, making possible our species’ psychological rehabilitation, the real repair of ourselves and our planet.
A Species In Denial (2004) reveals the naked—but dignifying—truth about humans A Species in Denial is the revolutionary bestseller by Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith. In it the author presents a series of essays addressing the crux issue before us as a species of the human condition, our capacity for ‘good’ and ‘evil’, describing how humans have coped with the dilemma of the human condition by living in denial of it. Griffith then explains the biological reason for the human condition, thus ending the need for the denial and maturing humanity to psychological freedom from its historic insecure human-condition-afflicted state. With a foreword by Templeton Prize winning biologist Charles Birch, this book provides a deeply insightful examination of science, religion, politics, men and women, psychiatry and mythology. Professor Charles Birch (1918–2009) was Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney and Challis Professor of Biology for 25 years. He was awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion in 1990, a prize considered to be ‘the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for religion’. Professor Birch was described as ‘Australia’s leading thinker on science and God’ (Sydney Morning Herald, 27 Feb. 1998). NOW AVAILABLE Paperback US $29.95

It has been the favorite of top players throughout modern times. There are a number of systems and variations to choose from such as the Scheveningen, Dragon, Najdorf, Boleslavsky, Kan, etc. There are also a number of sharp, complex, theoretical systems and that is why it is aptly named The Sicilian Jungle. IM Dr. Danny Kopec s addresses the problem of trying to simplify the complexities of the Sicilian Defense from the perspective of STRUCTURE that is, sound structures for Black, particularly for the endgame. Dr. Kopec uses a unique method which he calls Mastery Lessons to guide the learner towards pawn structures and piece configurations which have been demonstrated to lead to success in certain Sicilian variations. First there is a spritely written 1st Chapter on Tactics and Combinations by Geoff Chandler of Edinburgh Scotland. Mr. Chandler has updated his popular work with observations of play and missed opportunities from Internet play. The 2nd Chapter introduces a new author (Life Master Ian Harris) and a new approach to how openings can be learned. It presents Dr. Kopec’s idea that openings can be learned from the perspective of the following five goals: 1) Development 2) Center Control 3) King Safety 4) Space and 5) Material Balance. Dr. Kopec has been espousing this idea for a number of years in his lectures and chess camps. If effective, it is a novel way of teaching a subject that entails volumes and volumes of books over a number of centuries! Mr. Harris has developed this Chapter spanning some 50 pages in conjunction with Dr. Kopec. Dr. Kopec has added new material to his Chapter 3: How To Analyze a Position including lessons on the topics: The Point Count Method, Grand Central Station, and Don’t Believe Everything Your Computer Tells You. 3rd Edition Danny Kopec and Hal Terrie An excellent tool for self-study and for study of chess in classes This book is the third in a series that represents testing and evaluation of human and computer chess players for over 30 years. The original work started with the BratkoKopec Test in 1982 whereby 24 positions proved very effective in evaluating the leave of both human and computer chessplayers. These tests are particularly knowledge-based covering all phases and all levels of chess play. The present edition, our third, adds five new tests, covering the openings including Novice (1000–1499) Intermediate (1500–1999), Advanced (2000–2199) and Super-Advance (2200–2700). A test covering the subtleties of King and Pawn Endings has also been added. The new 2013 edition also has the all the tests re-ordered by level of difficulty. All important tactical themes are illustrated in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 covers very important themes related to pawn structures, including good structures, bad structures, and pawn structure methods. Finally, Chapter 3 covers important themes from real play illustrating how and when the conditions suggest that an attack on the King is appropriate. Practical Middlegame Techniques also covers (in Chapters 1 and 2) the material in two of Dr. Kopec’s most popular DVD’s: “How to Visualize Combinations” and “Pawn Structures and How to Play Them”. Real Reads are accessible texts designed to support the literacy development of primary and lower secondary age children while introducing them to the riches of our international literary heritage. The books can be enjoyed by able readers in middle primary, and allow older children with literacy difficulties to engage with great stories. The books are also useful in the teaching of English as an additional language. Each book is a retelling of a work of great literature from one of the world’s greatest cultures, fitted into a 64-page book, making classic stories, dramas and histories available to intelligent young readers as a bridge to the full texts, to language students wanting access to other cultures, and to adult readers who are unlikely ever to read the original versions. These works are not lightly called ‘classics’, nor does Real Reads shy away from ‘difficult’ texts and strange foreign works. They make the world’s greatest literature, from William Shakespeare to Mark Twain, from Jane Austen to the Ramayana, from the New Testament to the Chinese classic Journey to the West, readily accessible through masterful retellings. Each Real Reads title reflects the depth and power of the original story, and retains much of the author’s vocabulary, style and tone. Real Reads bring great books to a wider readership, while always honoring the context and structure of the original. Each is richly and intelligently illustrated, each illustrator carefully chosen for their ability to convey the mood of the original text. The wonderful pictures, always historically accurate and laid out to complement the text, enhance the reader’s understanding and enjoyment. Real Reads are physically robust, giving the reader a sense of holding a beautiful book rather than a cheap paperback. They are section-sewn so they won’t fall apart with regular reading, and printed on heavyweight paper with board covers and an elegant dustwrapper. Real Reads are a joy to handle, works of art in their own right. Real Reads embody cultural values and traditions from around the world. They foster cross-cultural understanding and help the reader connect with the world’s most important literature and history. Each book has a section called ‘Taking things further’ which provides historical and human context, suggests links to useful resources, and asks the reader challenging and insightful questions relating to the story.
