EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW FEATURE

iPMIM SPEAKS WITH ARJAN TOOR, CIGNA GLOBAL INDIVIDUAL PMI MANAGING DIRECTOR JOIN CIGNA GLOBAL AT THE SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX The Cigna Global Individual Private Medical Insurance Broker & Partner Conference takes place in Singapore from the 17th - 21st of September 2015. Throughout the year, we will issue invites to 15 partners who are aligned with Cigna’s customer centric vision to support expatriates through their journey. You could be one of them.

15 Please introduce yourself and background in the international medical insurance industry:

You are now responsible for the continued profitable growth and expansion of Cigna’s Global IPMI business. What's the plan? We’ll only be successful if we continue to listen to customer and brokers. We need to understand their needs and expectations deeply so that we can shape our future propositions accordingly. Every Friday I spend time analysing feedback from our customers, and I frequently listen to the conversations we have with our customers on the phone. I’ve been very pleased with how open our customers are with us – they will tell us when things are going

great, but they’ll also tell us how we can improve – something I really value. Based on the insights that we are gathering from customers and distribution partners, Cigna will continue to innovate our products, services and distribution channels. We have never been a follower; we always find our success in breaking new ground. That’s why we’ll continue to work closely with local regulators to expand our global licensing capabilities, continue to enhance our proposition for our distribution partners, and develop new products and services for new and emerging customer segments. What challenges are you currently facing when it comes to worldwide iPMI plan distribution? Undoubtedly the biggest challenge is keeping ahead of the latest trends in the market. In the last couple of years we have seen new technology become increasingly important in supporting the sale of IPMI plans, and we have been at the forefront of that, particularly in the broker market, with the launch of our AppLink and Broker Quote

Tool platforms. The other big challenge that I see is around licensing and regulation. If you take the US for example, the Affordable Care Act continues to present challenges for all providers of expatriate health insurance plans. In other markets we see similar challenges, with expats finding themselves having to purchase mandatory local health insurance plans, even though these plans do not always provide the comprehensive global cover that globally mobile individuals require. As a global leader in this market, we will continue to leverage Cigna’s extensive global footprint and capabilities to find compliant solutions that meet the needs of these customers. For those global brokers, agents, intermediaries and IFAs who aren't currently offering iPMI, what is the Cigna message to them? First of all, I would tell these partners that the IPMI market will continue to grow, as more and more people see the n e e d to p urchas e comprehensive medical insurance.

Medical Health Insurance News

Let me first say how pleased I am to be joining Cigna’s Global Individual Private Medical Insurance business. We launched this business back in 2011, and since then the business has grown exponentially to become one of the leading providers of health and wellbeing solutions for individual expatriates around the globe. This is a great time to be joining the business. The team here has done great work over the last four years in building a very strong proposition, and we have built deep relationships with a large number of distribution partners who are now strong advocates for the Cigna brand and share our commitment to customer centricity. We have established a very successful business, and I’m honoured to take on the challenge of taking this business to the next level. As for my background, I’m joining Cigna Global IPMI after spending four years in Hong Kong as Chief Marketing Officer for Cigna’s International Markets. In this role, I had

responsibility for the development and execution of Cigna’s global marketing strategy, with a strong focus on individual customers. While working with our teams in Asia, Europe and the US, I was able to spend a lot of time with our customers and distribution partners in these markets. This cross-cultural exposure will undoubtedly be a great asset to me in my new role, and I fully intend to continue listening to our customers and distribution partners as often as I can.

EXCLUSIVE iPOLICY INTERVIEW FEATURE l

We also see a big increase in the number of globally mobile individuals which further reinforces this trend. This presents a big opportunity for brokers and other distributors, and Cigna is very willing to partner with you to get you set up to offer these plans in addition to your current product range. We have invested heavily in state-of-the-art technology solutions, and we can now offer brokers a very easy-touse Broker Quote Tool for generating quotes on behalf of clients, or a complete online affiliate solution whereby customers can hit the brokers site, get quotes themselves and proceed to buy online. The broker can get involved by calling out on these leads, or alternatively a lot of brokers are seeing success with this by allowing Cigna to follow-up and convert the leads on their behalf. You should really view us as an addition to your own sales team! Can you tell us more about AppLink? AppLink is a tool we launched last year to help support a growing band of brokers who prefer to trade online. We essentially provide a unique tracking

l

URL which the broker can place on their site, drive traffic towards it, and allow their customers to get an instant price online for expatriate cover. We then send an automatic email to the broker every 24 hours to advise when there are new leads, and the broker has the option of whether to follow-up on these themselves, or ask Cigna to do it on their behalf. It’s a really simple way of driving more international health insurance leads and finding different ways to support customers based on the ways people like to interact with their broker these days. January 2014 and Cigna announces the launch of local language sales and service capabilities for expatriate individual heal t h insurance products. How has the roll-out progressed and what challenges h ave yo u h a d t o overcome? Since 2014, we’ve expanded our language capabilities from English to include full French, German, Spanish and Dutch sales and service. This includes every touch point through which we interact with our customers , and means we have native

speakers on hand to pick-up any customer service or claims enquiry. The transition has actually been very smooth. The key here is finding people who speak the local language as their first language. This ensures we have someone who can effectively interact with customers and understands the cultural nuances that the customer experiences. After all, it’s not just about the words we speak, it’s about understanding where our customers are coming from and putting ourselves in their shoes. It’s also worth pointing out that we have native speakers on our broker teams as well, offering an additional service to brokers who would rather communicate with us in their mother tongue. Based on where we see the opportunity for further geographical expansion, we will continue to expand our language capabilities. Over the next 5 years, which geographic markets will represent your core strategic focus, and why? We’ve built a strong business over the last few years by focusing on key expatriate markets

around the world. We will continue to look at where the ‘up and coming’ countries are for expatriates, and expand our capabilities in those markets. That said, we are a global business, and I fully believe over the next 5 years that country boundaries will continue to blur and we will see a true ‘global marketplace’ emerge. Of course, there will always be local market regulations we need to adapt to, but my goal is to be able to support our customers and distribution partners anywhere in the world. How will the cost of iPMI rise in the coming year and why? This is a question I get asked a lot, and it’s not necessarily an easy one to answer. We all know that medical cost trends are highly dependent on where in the world medical treatment takes place. We will continue to be transparent with our customers and distribution partners about specific increases, but we will also continue to manage the overall cost of treatment for the benefit of our customers.

17

iPMI buyers have become more demanding. Insurance is a given and it's about the entire package and added value. How do you add value? I completely agree. It’s no longer enough to just provide a good quality insurance product, customers are now seeking a lot more value from their expatriate health insurer and it’s up to us to continuously challenge ourselves to think about what more we can provide. Let me give you an example: Living as an expatriate can clearly be very stressful at times, and we know our customers travel a

lot – both for business as well as for pleasure. So we’re now providing all our Gold and Platinum customers with access to the new Safe Travel by Cigna app for Apple and Android devices. This app has been developed in close collaboration with expats to support them when moving to a new country, but also while they are travelling. For example, the app pushes dynamic travel safety alerts which keep expats informed of emerging risks which may impact them on their travels, and secure document storage meaning the customer always has a copy of their insurance documents and passport electronically stored in case of emergency. Other than the app, we also regularly communicate with our customers to provide them with health and wellness tips, a quarterly customer magazine providing useful articles and hints for living well away from home, and a health and wellness portal providing access to online health risk assessments and wellness guides. Again, it is about listening to our customers, understanding what their needs are, and then

making sure we deliver added value while we continue to nail the basics. What should customers consider when choosing an IPMI plan with real global access? There are a few key factors customers should take into account when looking for a high quality health care plan which offers true ‘global’ peace of mind. Firstly, service is really important. At Cigna, we aim to consistently deliver high quality service, and part of this service is the ability for customers to get access to an actual person – our customers won’t have to press a series of numbers in a telephone menu to access who they need to speak to. Next, it’s about our customers knowing they have access to treatment nearby when they need it, regardless of where they are in the world. As I said before, Cigna customers have access to over 1 million doctors, hospitals and clinics around the world. Customers can search these on their online Customer Area to find the nearest specialist wherever they are, and brokers can also do this

on their customers’ behalf in the Broker Portal. Finally, I’d say providing different products and levels of cover to give customer more choice is essential. We offer plans with varying cover levels, different module options and flexible deductibles and cost shares to let customers build a totally customized plan. We’re continuing to build this range of products by listening closely to our customers and distribution partners, and using solid insights to determine which products and services will be most valued by each segment. Last and not least, what do you think of iPMI Magazine? iPMI Magazine? My onestop resource to stay on top of what’s going on in this very exciting industry! l

Medical Health Insurance News

At Cigna, we can offer our customers access to over 1 million doctors, hospitals and clinics around the world. This extensive network allows us to negotiate substantial discounts on the cost of care in a lot of cases which means we can pass this saving back to our customers. This helps offset some of the rising premium costs, and in the case of our customers moving inbound into the US, this has actually let us reduce premiums by 25% for these customers in the last few weeks.

MUNICH RE CEO NIKOLAUS VON BOMHARD

25

FEATURED NEWS

| 13 33 iPOLICY

MUNICH RE TARGETS PROFIT OF €2.5–3BN 4MUNICH RE IS TARGETING A PROFIT IN THE €2.5–3BN RANGE FOR 2015. CEO NIKOLAUS VON BOMHARD BELIEVES THAT THE GROUP IS WELL POSITIONED WITH ITS COMPETENCE IN RISK TO MOVE INTO NEW FIELDS OF BUSINESS AND TAP NEW LONG-TERM EARNINGS POTENTIAL. MUNICH RE ANNOUNCED A FURTHER SHARE BUY-BACK TO ENABLE IT TO PAY OUT TO SHAREHOLDERS CAPITAL IT HAS EARNED, BUT DOES NOT CURRENTLY NEED. A MAXIMUM OF €1BN WORTH OF OWN SHARES ARE AGAIN TO BE BOUGHT BACK UP UNTIL THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING IN 2016. EO Nikolaus von Bomhard said, "Looking back, 2014 was a good year for Munich Re despite widespread uncertainty. We were able to surpass by almost €200m our original result target of €3bn." He continued: "The Supervisory Board and the Board of Management are proposing to the Annual General Meeting an increase in the dividend to €7.75 per share in order to allow our shareholders to participate commensurately in Munich Re’s success. Our dividend policy, and our business, are based on the principle of sustainability. We are increasing the dividend only to a level that we can maintain even after a less successful year and that will permit us to comfortably finance profitable growth and innovation." On the outlook for 2015, von Bomhard said: "We are targeting a consolidated result of €2.5–3bn in 2015." The comparatively wide spread of the result guidance is due to the unchanged high level of political and economic uncertainty.

The flood of liquidity in important markets means that Munich Re must expect declining returns on its investments again in 2015. However, Munich Re's strategy for a number of years has been to base its profitability primarily on the technical result achieved in its insurance business. "That strategy is paying off in the current capital market environment", underlined von Bomhard. "We are also attempting to diversify our investments even more", he added, "for example by increasing our investments in alternative asset classes such as infrastructure." In primary insurance, in January ERGO also extended its new generation of life insurance products to company pension schemes. "This enables us to provide an innovative and forwardlooking answer to the challenges posed by low interest rates", noted von Bomhard. Both the capital markets and the reinsurance markets will remain challenging in 2015. Munich Re

expects the fierce competition to continue. "Rigorous cycle management and underwriting discipline, and excellent client service, will therefore still be extremely important", emphasised von Bomhard. "This requires great determination from our staff and management to let go of even substantial levels of business where it is no longer possible to maintain adequate prices. This soft market phase will show just who takes their returnon-equity targets seriously." In addition to the current intense competition – particularly in reinsurance – there are also indications of structural changes in the insurance industry. In particular, significant changes are expected in the context of increasing digitalisation. “Here it is good to know that throughout our history we have already seen many groundbreaking changes and mastered them successfully. In our core business – the assumption of risk

- we are focused on innovation, digitalisation is now a part of this. Thanks to the inventiveness of our 43,000 staff across the world, we are well placed to take on structural challenges and generate profitable new business with innovative products," said von Bomhard. There is potential for growth not only from a geographical perspective, as in the booming regions of Asia. Munich Re is also working on pushing back the limits of insurability of risks not yet – or not yet adequately – covered in the market, such as cyber risk, energy, supply chain and business interruption, and protection of reputation. Munich Re has announced a further share buy-back programme: by the Annual General Meeting on 27 April 2016, up to €1bn worth of shares are to be bought back. The buy-back is conditional on no major upheavals occurring in the capital markets or in its underwriting business. On the basis of the current share price, around 5.3 million shares, or approximately 3.1% of the share capital, would be bought back. The buy-back currently in progress should be completed by the Annual General Meeting on 23 April 2015 and the acquired shares retired, as with the previous buybacks; so far, around 5.6 million shares with a value of approximately €905m have been bought back. Summary of the figures for the financial year 2014 In 2014, the Group posted an

operating result of €4.0bn (4.4bn). Currency translation effects were again negative, amounting to –€0.1bn (–0.3bn). Mainly as a consequence of a recalculation of taxes for prior years, in 2014 there was a net inflow from income taxes of €0.3bn (previous year: expense of –€0.1bn). Changes in the value of derivative financial instruments, and goodwill imp air m ent s ow ing to a resegmentation of the ERGO field of business had an adverse impact. Shareholders' equity rose by €4.1bn in 2014 to €30.3bn (31 December 2013: €26.2bn) The return on riskadjusted capital (RORAC), which serves as the key performance indicator for the Group as a whole, developed satisfactorily, rising to 13.2% (12.1%), whilst the return on equity (RoE) was 11.3% (12.5%). Gross premiums written by the Group in 2014 decreased to €48.8bn (51.1bn). As at 31 December 2014, Munich Re's available financial resources were 138% (153%) of its self-defined economic risk-capital requirement (economic solvency ratio). This internal capital requirement corresponds to 1.75 times the solvency level that will be required under Solvency II. Subject to any changes made pending supervisory recognition, the solvency ratio according to Solvency II requirements would thus be 242% (267%). Reinsurance: Strong result of €2.9bn The reinsurance field of business contributed €2.9bn (2.8bn) to the consolidated result. The operating

result was down –€0.3bn at €3.3bn. Gross premiums written decreased to €26.8bn (27.8bn). This was partly due to the development of exchange rates, which resulted in a reduction in premium income of almost –2%. Life reinsurance contributed €410m (403m) to the consolidated result. There were some unsatisfactory developments in the USA and Australia. Property-casualty reinsurance accounted for €2.5bn (2.4bn) of the result for the full year. The combined ratio for 2014 amounted to a very good 92.7% (92.1%) based on net earned premiums. As claims notifications for "basic losses" remained significantly below the expected level overall, Munich Re was able to release reserves: after adjustments for commissions, the net effect for the year was around 5.3% of net earned premiums. Munich Re maintained its conservative approach in setting loss reserves and in adjusting them over the course of time, so the safety margin in the reserves remained high. Overall claims expenditure for major losses in 2014 totalled – €1.2bn (–1.7bn). Reser ve strengthening and run-off profits for major losses from previous years almost balanced each other out in 2014. The major-loss burden amounted to 7.2% (10.4%) of net earned premiums, below the average expected figure of 12%. The cost of natural catastrophe losses for the full year was –€538m (–764m). At –€305m, a February snowstorm in Japan was the largest loss event of 2014. Man-

-made major losses amounted to –€625m (–925m), accounting for 3.9% (5.7%) of net earned premiums. Torsten Jeworrek, Munich Re’s Reinsurance CEO, “We continue to focus on our profit-oriented underwriting policy and offer our clients individual solutions. And we benefit from our diversification into primary-insurance-based and specialised market segments.” ERGO field of business: Result of €169m, significant rise in profits in the ERGO Group

Munich Health: Profit of €109m (150m) In 2014, the Munich Health field of business posted a profit of €109m (150m). The operating

result declined to €118m. Munich Health's gross premiums written showed a year-on-year decrease of 18.5% to €5.3bn (6.6bn), which was attributable to negative currency translation effects, the reduction of Munich Re's share in a large-volume treaty and the sale of the Windsor Health Group. The 2014 combined ratio was 98.8% (98.3%). Investments: Investment result of €8.0bn Munich Re has made the disclosure of its investments more transparent in its annual financial statements for 2014. Insurancerelated investments (which mainly comprise investments for unitlinked life insurance contracts) are disclosed separately, as is the result from these investments. The figures for the previous year have been adjusted accordingly. With a carrying amount of €218.9bn (market value of €235.8bn), total investments (excluding insurance-related investments) increased to €8.0bn (7.2bn). Munich Re's consolidated financial statements for 2014 show the business managed by ERGO in the three new segments Life and Health Germany, Propertycasualty Germany, and International. As a consequence of this change in presentation, goodwill had to be reallocated and revalued, which, together with the revaluation of intangible assets, led to impairments totalling around €450m. The success of ERGO's business in 2014 enabled Munich Re to post a profit of €169m (408m) for the ERGO field of business, notwithstanding the high additional charges. The result also benefited from tax income for prior years, which, taking into account policyholder participation, contributed around €150m. The operating result fell by around 9% to €626m (689m). The combined ratio for the year in the Propertycasualty Germany segment improved to 95.3% (96.7%), whilst that for the International segment was 97.3% (98.7%).

ERGO CEO Torsten Oletzky commented on the result for the ERGO Group, "We have again done very well with the result of the ERGO Insurance Group, raising the profit from €436m to €620m." Gross premiums written remained stable in 2014 at €16.7bn (16.7bn), and total premium income across all lines of business in 2014 was also fairly constant at €18.1m (18.0m). In the Life and Health Germany segment, gross premiums decreased by 1.8% in 2014 to €9.8bn (10.0bn), and in the Propertycasualty Germany segment they remained at a similar level to the previous year at €3.1bn (3.2bn). In the International segment they amounted to €3.8bn (3.5bn). Torsten Oletzky said, "The pleasing progress made in international business, where we saw a rise in both premium income and the result, shows that we are well on track. And we will continue to work hard on expanding our international business. We are also focusing on innovative business in Germany. Examples of this on the product side are our new company pension scheme, and our new residential-buildings cover, which also takes in highhazard flood zones. And the new possibility of using digital signature is a great service for everyone who wishes to make full use of electronic processes.”

“IPMI MAGAZINE IS AN EXCELLENT MEDIA FOR BROKERS & INSURERS.” OLIVIER LE FAOUDER CEO AOC INSURANCE BROKER ipolicymagazine.com

Outlook for 2015: Group result target of €2.5–3bn

Assuming exchange rates remain stable, the Group anticipates that for the financial year 2015 its gross premiums written will be in the range of €47–49bn. Gross premiums of €26–27bn are expected in reinsurance, and €16–16.5bn in the ERGO field of business. Total premium income in the ERGO field of business (including the savings element in unit-linked life insurance and capitalisation products) should amount to €17.5–18bn in 2015. Gross premiums written of slightly over €5bn are expected for Munich Health. In property-casualty reinsurance, Munich Re is aiming for a combined ratio of around 98% of net earned premiums. The increase of more than 5 percentage points on the ratio achieved in 2014 is mainly due to the fact that in 2014 there were randomly fewer major losses than expected. For 2015, Munich Re anticipates major losses in the order of almost €2bn, corresponding to an unchanged 12% of net earned premiums. The combined ratio for the ERGO Property-casualty Germany segment should be at a very satisfying level of around 93% in 2015 provided major losses remain within normal bounds; a combined ratio of around 97% is expected for the ERGO International segment. The combined ratio for Munich Health is likely to be

around 99%. Munich Re anticipates that market interest rates will remain very low overall in 2015, with correspondingly lower regular income from fixed-interest investments. Munich Re expects a total investment result of at least €7bn, representing a return on investments of at least 3%. The consolidated result in reinsurance should be at least €2bn in 2015. For the ERGO field of business, Munich Re projects a consolidated result for 2015 of around €500m, considerably better than the 2014 result, which was adversely affected above all by the goodwill impairment in the ERGO International segment. The profit target for the Munich Health field of business is in the range of €50–100m due to lower investment income and special taxation effects falling away. The Group is aiming for a consolidated result in the range of €2.5–3bn, subject to large losses being within normal bounds and to its profits not being affected by severe movements in exchange rates or the capital markets, significant changes in fiscal parameters, or other exceptional factors. conditions and appropriate returns. The proportion of investments in equities including equity derivatives as at 31 December 2014 was down to 4.3% (31 December 2013: 4.6%). Fixedinterest securities, loans and short-term fixed-interest investments continued to make up the largest portion of Munich Re’s investments, with a share of around 88% at market value. CFO Jörg Schneider was satisfied with the investment result:, “Thanks to our good portfolio mix and the long maturities of our fixed-interest investments, we have been able to largely ride out a capital market environment with extremely low interest rates, which is very pleasing. The low-interest rate policies of central banks come at a huge cost to savers and all forms of old-age pensions. As the representative of the interests of our policyholders in life insurance, we are openly voicing our criticism of these policies.” The Group’s asset manager is MEAG, whose assets under management as at 31 December 2014 included not only Group investments but also segregated and retail funds totalling €13.9bn (12.9bn).

International healthcare used to be very simple; you designed one product and used it everywhere. But now there are local restrictions on who can insure, how, and what can be insured. igna UK HealthCare Benefits (UKHB) has introduced two new benefits on group dental plans from 1st January 2015. Cigna dental plans provide easy and cost-effective care. The plans support employees with treatment costs and help employers to reduce employee absence and promote a healthy workforce. The first new benefit is cover for child orthodontic treatment¹. PACIFIC PRIME CLARIFIES INTERNATIONAL PRIVATE MEDICAL INSURANCE INFLATION Friday, 20 March 2015 05:55

T

he advisor analysed findings to explore the methodology used in reporting inflation rates, along with indications of where care should be taken when drawing specific conclusions. The article demonstrates a requirement for clarification between the data used in regards to promotions and discounts, taking them into account rather than omitting their significance by removing their impact on premium inflation analyses. The advisor deemed it “more beneficial to interested consumers to reflect true pricing at the time of our reporting to give a more accurate depiction of the current landscape of the market”. The article makes it clear that this decision left some numbers open to interpretation due to the final figures being presented with an emphasis on inflation percentage. This explanation was given to a

query on how some insurers have a seemingly high inflation % rate, which may not be an accurate reflection of a given year’s rate. The first example of this came in Pacific Prime’s position for William Russell, who appeared to have the highest annual inflation of the year among insurance companies covered within the report. The advisor showed that, at first glance, there could be an assumption that William Russell simply raised premiums at a greater rate than others. However, the issue becomes clear when the context of temporary promotions given as an additional discount to Pacific Prime clients is explained. Pacific Prime states they used this discounted rate as data for the annual report, which was not truly indicative of William Russell’s published rates. When the promotion ended, the data was

‘artificially exaggerated’ and could not be considered a true representation of William Russell’s actual inflationary rise between 2013 and 2014. They highlighted that William Russell actually had the 2nd lowest average inflation rate in 2013, and the lowest average inflation in 2012. William Russell has a long track record of providing quality insurance at an excellent value, introducing new measures to combat inflation in the form of new provider and limited direct billing networks. Although the insurer seemingly had the highest inflation in the report, Pacific Prime would like to acknowledge that the % increase is not indicative of actual premium price, and expects a return to lower inflation rates in the 2015 report. MORE POWER IN THE HANDS OF BROKERS WITH INTRODUCTION OF NEW CLAIMS TRACKING TOOL Tuesday, 17 March 2015 06:09

E

serve is a web-based portal, accessible via desktop, tablet and mobile, that allows brokers to view all the claims they have in progress on AXA policies at their convenience, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Following a successful pilot with Bluefin, eServe has now gone into a second pilot phase with members of the Brokerbility group and will be made available to the wider market in Q2 this year. Eserve, developed with rapid application delivery platform OutSystems, allows brokers to view key claims information in real time including liability decisions, payment and settlement details and view the contact information of the relevant parties involved in the claim such as adjusters, solicitors and surveyors. Brokers will be able to view their private home and motor, commercial property and motor

and liability claims via the portal and although currently available only to brokers, the functionality to allow customers to track their own claim will be added in due course. Chris Voller, Director of Claims at AXA Insurance said, “Our ability to deliver a fast, efficient and pain-free claims process is vital if we are to fulfil our ambitions to be the insurer of choice for brokers. “Our award-winning claims service is greatly valued by brokers and we want to stay ahead of the game which is why we have invested so much in creating this portal. “We understand that customers are more demanding than ever and brokers are under a huge amount of pressure to deliver for their clients. Eserve allows them to cut out the unnecessary processes and delays that often cause frustration for their customers

and deliver a superior claims service.” Zahid Jiwa, VP UK and Ireland, OutSystems added: “By optimising eServe for PCs, tablets and mobiles, AXA can deliver a claims system that is user-friendly, accessible and one that fits into a broker’s trading day, not the other way around. “In addition, eServe allows AXA to react more quickly to any broker feedback or potential problems in the claims process.” Following the completion of the Brokerbility pilot, eServe will be made available to all brokers. Enhancements to the functionality of eServe will be made throughout 2015 and beyond. Thirty percent of people in poor health or who had a chronic health problem or disability were underinsured, compared with 16 percent of those who were healthier. Rising Deductibles Contribute to the Underinsured Rate Over the past 10 years, deductibles have contributed to underinsured rates in two ways: more people than ever before have plans with deductibles, and those deductibles are taking up larger shares of people’s incomes. According to the report, in 2003, 40 percent of people with private health insurance had no deductible, while in 2014 just 25 percent didn’t have one. In 2014, 14 million people had deductibles that were 5 percent or more of their income, while only 4 million had deductibles that high in 2003. The impact has been substantial. While many people were underinsured because they had high out-of-pocket costs and high deductibles, 7 million people were underinsured due to deductibles alone in 2014. When looking at high deductibles by type of insurance, the report found that 11 percent of people with employer plans and 24 percent with individual market plans had high deductibles in 2014, up from 2 percent and 7 percent respectively

INCREASING DEMAND FOR EXPAT HEALTH INSURANCE IN HONG KONG Tuesday, 27 January 2015 13:17

As the expat health insurance market in Hong Kong has experienced recent growth, Pacific Prime examines the reasons contributing to this and what it means for insurers. The market for expat health insurance in Hong Kong is growing at a considerable rate as opportunities for expatriates to work in Asia remain on the rise. Pacific Prime HK analysed data from a 2013 consensus which revealed that 0.6% of the estimated 50 million expatriates from around the world reside in Hong Kong, translating to 301,000 expats out of a population of 7.1 million people. This is an even more substantial figure when compared to the data from 2009 which estimated the expat population to be 252,000, revealing an increase of 4.6%. These figures place Hong Kong as 7th in the world for expatriate population percentage and with estimates for 2017 revealing a further population increase of 7%, it is likely that Hong Kong will maintain its position as a popular destination for worldwide expatriates.

At HealthCare International, we recognise that individuals and families are becoming increasingly mobile internationally, whether because of a temporary relocation through work or a permanent lifestyle change. These expats may find that public health services in their new location are basic and limited. The foreign health care that is available may not be of the same quality as the services they have been used to. When you or your family need worldwide medical care while you are away from your home country, the last thing you want is to find that it is costly and difficult to arrange, particularly in an emergency. That’s why having the right international medical and life insurance cover in place is more important than ever.
