Inside one, suspended in the centre six metres above the water, an aerial dancer weaves up and down on a silk trapeze. Think of Billy Liar, Blood Brothers and Sliding Doors and you have the flavour of this romantic comedy set in the early 1980s, the era of 2Tone Records, when The Specials, The Beat, The Selecter and, most enduringly, Madness were the very British new sound. On the night of a young bloke’s sixteenth birthday, he commits a petty crime to impress the girl he loves. When the police arrive, Joe is confronted with one of those crossroad choices: to stay or to run. Our House follows the two courses his life would have taken had he stayed to face the music or made a run for it. Gallery Players present the area première of this awardwinning musical.

Now he brings his magical music to Ipswich, co-ordinating the town’s church bells into a synchronised Symphony of Bells. Be part of this celebration of our unique churches with the oldest ring of bells in the world.
Conductors in the church bell towers set stopwatches and the music begins. Bell towers call to each other, echoing across the town from the centre out to the Waterfront churches. The music draws on traditional bell-ringing skills, but with new kinds of sounds and patterns, leaving silences and space for the bells to resonate through the town.
At midday, three loud aerial fireworks signal the start of the symphony.

Sun 26 June The Saints Summer Street Fair Presented by: I Make Fun Stuff and Loveone Situated between the town centre and the Waterfront, the ‘Saints’ is one of Ipswich’s most historic and attractive gems and boasts an eclectic mix of great independent businesses and eateries. St Peter’s Street is closed to traffic on the day in order to host an interesting selection of stalls, celebrating a diverse range of art and design, vintage and contemporary products… and food! A variety of entertainment throughout the day adds to the convivial atmosphere. Building on the success of the fair, held for the first time during the 2010 Ip-art
festival, this year sees more stalls on St Peter’s Street; many of our contributors are local artists, and businesses will be open throughout the day, lending their support. And if you wander down to the Waterfront, you can also enjoy Art Comes Alive, an open-air art exhibition. We look forward to welcoming you to the ‘Saints’ and being part of the Ip-art festival. Venue: St Nicholas and St Peter’s Streets Time: 10am-4pm Admission free

Sat 25 June - Sun 18 September Roadside Britain: On The Road Sam Mellish The work in Sam Mellish’s latest photography project portrays the livelihoods that exist on the edge of society. This growing body of images documents traditional roadside services, taking its influence from Robert Frank, Paul Graham and Jack Kerouac, as well as countless On The Road-styled songs. Floating between the observational and the voyeuristic, documenting the mundane, the eccentric and a unique, much-loved Britishness, the work challenges the icons of the highway and brings home a real taste of Roadside Britain.
Venue: Ipswich Art School Gallery Time: 10am-5pm, Tue-Sun Admission free Info: 01473 433681 www.sammellishphotography.co.uk
First Exposure: Young People’s Photography This exhibition includes photographic work by students from Suffolk schools. It runs alongside Sam Mellish’s Roadside Britain: On the Road, and has been developed with guidance from him. Sam draws on his varied experience as a photojournalist, which spans documentary and commercial reportage, fine art practice and publications. From 35mm to digital prints and film, First Exposure explores the possibilities of lens-based media and its crossovers into other creative practices. It demonstrates approaches that consider formal technique, as well as contemporary responses to cultural ideas, as investigated and interpreted by young people.
Many thanks to Ipswich Borough Council, the University of Westminster, Babylon Gallery & ADEC, foto8 and the Arts Council England.
Sat 25 June Sun 18 September Darren Johnston / Array Award-winning artist Darren Johnston develops new work for the IAS Atrium space, providing a contemporary response to the themes being explored across the museums and DanceEast in collaboration with the Royal Opera House. Darren’s multi-disciplinary approach has seen him collaborate with Warp Records artists Aphex Twin / Chris Cunningham and Squarepusher, and create work for the Southbank Centre, the Roundhouse, major international festivals and television. Typically engaged in modes of performance, including choreography, filmmaking and sound design, this project sees a departure from black-box / performance venues towards the development of new interactive installation work for gallery environments and sitespecific interventions into the local urban space. Venue: Atrium, Ipswich Art School Gallery Time: 10am-5pm, Tues-Sun Admission free Info: 01473 433681

Mon 13 June - Sat 9 July Olwen Jones R.W.S, R.E, R.A.S Recent Watercolours & Oils Despite recently completing three years as Vice-President of the Royal Watercolour Society (2004-2007), this Essex-based painter-printmaker has been able to produce a whole body of new watercolours for this, her fourth major exhibition at The Gallery.
Venue: The John Russell Contemporary Art Gallery; 4-6 Wherry Lane Time: 9.30am-5pm, Mon-Sat Admission free Info: 01473 212051
With a painting and printmaking career spanning almost 40 years, followers of Olwen’s work will instantly recognise her strong sense of architectural design and her use of reflective images with superimposed shapes, which she marries together in perfect harmony. Standing out above all are her exemplary drawing skills. Olwen’s favourite theme of plants and reflections, whether in windows, glasshouses or conservatories, has often featured strongly in her many exhibitions and it is visible here too.
Fri 24 June - Sat 16 July Kirsty Tinkler Ip-art Award 2010 winner Kirsty Tinkler is an Australian artist based in the UK. She is interested in the psychology of architectural spaces and archetypal imagery as the language of the everyday that can reveal often hidden aspects of our humanity. Her work has shifted from the clean lines of the new world, to a preoccupation with ornamental facades and structures. Tinkler's enquiry aims to uncover the visual imprints and impressions of these hierarchical, classical structures on the colonial mind. Using experiential installations as her prime medium, she immerses the viewer in questions around power and solidarity. For Ip-art 2011, Tinkler creates a new site-sensitive sculptural installation for the UCS Waterfront Gallery Space, considering the gallery’s
interior, the viewer’s journey within the space and the waterfront location that it occupies. Presented in collaboration with University Campus Suffolk. Ipswich Borough Council & Turnstone Arts Grants sponsor Ip-art Award 2007-2010. 2010 Award Selectors: Catherine Hemelryk, Curator; Matthew C. Applegate, Winner 2009; Julia Devonshire, Arts Project Officer Colchester & Ipswich Museums.
