WELCOME FROM BERNARD LAPASSET

Welcome to the IRB World Rugby Conference and Exhibition (ConfEx) Following the success of the inaugural event last year we are delighted to once again bring together a truly international gathering of stakeholders in Rugby at this pivotal point in our sport’s history. This edition of the event will unite leading figures and decisionmakers from across Rugby and the wider world of sport and business, with the aim of growing the game globally. The 2014 event is the last gathering of the Rugby family ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2015 and Rugby Sevens’ inclusion in the Olympic Games. A significant entry in the international Rugby calendar, ConfEx will be marked with several major announcements including the presentation of the new World Rugby brand. Thank you for joining us, I hope you find it valuable, informative and enjoyable. Bernard Lapasset IRB Chairman

Bienvenue à l’IRB World Rugby Conference and Exhibition (ConfEx).

IRB WORLD RUGBY CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION

About the IRB The International Rugby Board (IRB) is the global governing body for the sport of rugby union with 120 national member unions and six regional associations in membership. Headquartered in Dublin and with an executive staff of 93, the IRB drives the development, investment and regulation of a sport that is currently experiencing exceptional growth in participation, profile and interest. Among its portfolio of global events are its flagship Rugby World Cup, Women’s Rugby World Cup, Rugby World Cup Sevens, HSBC Sevens World Series, IRB Women’s Sevens World Series and the IRB Junior World Championship. Rugby Sevens will make its Olympic Games debut at Rio 2016. Driven by the commercial success of Rugby World Cup, the IRB is investing more than £180 million

between 2013-2016 to boost participation and increase the competitiveness of the men’s and women’s international Game. Key investment areas include: player welfare; education and training; competitions; massparticipation programmes; high-performance initiatives and union grants. Rugby is one of the world’s fastest-growing and most popular team sports in what is an increasingly competitive and congested sporting marketplace. Global Rugby participation has grown by 18 per cent in the past four years and there are now more than 6.6 million men, women and children playing

ABOUT THE IRB

the sport across 120 national federations affiliated to the International Rugby Board. From the stadium to the armchair, the sport continues to reach out, excite and engage new fans, broadcasters and commercial partners through its successful blend of compelling action and unique character-building values. At the very heart of this growth has been the IRB Strategic Plan. It has been the blueprint for growth of the sport worldwide, bound by the simple mission statement ‘growing the Rugby family.’ Central to the plan was the mission to create an environment in which the IRB and its member unions could flourish and develop the Game globally. The IRB World Rugby Conference and Exhibition is one such demonstration of this intention.

These factors combined with the Game’s unique character-building values and spirit are at the heart of Rugby’s growth. As we reach out to new territories it is important that we retain our central character-building values of: • • • • •

Integrity Respect Solidarity Passion Discipline

As the Game evolves and grows, we need to ensure that we promote, protect and nurture these values to ensure that enjoyment remains central to a sport for all.

A 2011 independent study into Rugby’s growth, commissioned by MasterCard, pointed to four main reasons behind an 18 per cent increase in global participation since 2007: • • • •

The success and strength of Rugby World Cup The IRB’s Strategic Investment Programme The IRB’s event hosting strategy Olympic re-inclusion www.irb.com/confex 05

WELCOME FROM OUR PARTNERS

With just under a year to go until Rugby World Cup 2015, the IRB World Rugby Conference and Exhibition falls at the most exciting time yet in Land Rover’s sponsorship of the global game. After the success of Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand, Land Rover has furthered its association with the showpiece tournament as a Worldwide Partner of Rugby World Cup 2015, where we will look to share our passion for the sport with fans around the world. As part of this commitment Land Rover is assisting England Rugby 2015 in taking the Webb Ellis Cup to places it has never been around the world as part of the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour. We are immensely proud and excited by the Rugby World Cup partnership, which continues Land Rover’s long-standing association with Rugby at all levels of the game. From the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup for under-11 and under-12 teams in England, to the ACT Brumbies in Australia, we have partnerships stretching across the world at all levels of the sport. Land Rover celebrates those who embrace life’s challenges and Rugby World Cup offers world-class teams the biggest challenge within the sport.

Alongside our sponsorship of Premiership Rugby here in England, Land Rover is also proud to be a partner of HITZ, an award winning social change programme which tackles some of the greatest challenges facing young people today – unemployment, crime and disillusionment. HITZ uses Rugby to increase young people’s resilience, self-reliance and confidence. To further help this initiative grow, we have recently also supported the introduction of the HITZ programme in Argentina, where we will help fund three coaches who will be responsible for training young people on a day-today basis. Not only does Land Rover support the elite players, teams and Tournaments around the globe but we are equally excited to invest in helping the next generation of young Rugby stars fulfil their potential – whatever and wherever that may be. On behalf of Land Rover we hope you enjoy the next few days at the IRB Conference and a very exciting next twelve months in the world of Rugby.

Airton Risk Management, a division of Paddy Power plc, is industry leader in providing corporate clients with financial cover related to the outcome of sporting events via two main products: • Player-bonus cover: for sports organisations / sponsors. Many sports clubs now utilise financial bonuses to incentivise their players for success. We can help hedge these bonuses for a fraction of the cost. • Conditional-rebates: for retailers. This service enables retailers to drive sales e.g. Rhino-Teamwear’s promotion for the Barbarians vs Lions match where customers who bought the Barbarians shirt received their money back if they won. We helped Rhino to offset this risk.
