CONTEXT ‘‘A true constructive regionalism would respond to local colours, materials and customs; it would embrace traditions and transform tradition; it would be wed to its setting, in either rural or urban landscape; it would foster craft and push the limits of technology; it would speak to the individual and search for the universal…A constructive regionalism would foster craft of building while at the same time encourage a new consciousness in the manufacture of machine products.’’ Anthony Alofsin.

KIZILIRMAK BRIDGE

Design Director : Melike Altınışık In collabration with B-Arch: Eda Tekirli B-Arch :Demet Çekiç B-Arch: Erenalp Saltık Intern: Ali Uçar Type: Competition Award: First Mention Client: Sivas Municipality

DESIGN APPROACH With Sivas’s morphological and structural elements defining its physical conditions, the formation and transformation of its fabric is crucial to investigate in order to fully grasp the entity of the city. Kızılırmak, being a natural border-line, harbors the potential of combining the mentioned transformations in the city Sivas’s organizational set up. When Sivas’s architectural typology and its historic evolution of the city figure is analyzed, it is easily noticeable that the new boulevard will play an important role fusing its two cultural and social hubs: Sivas Cumhuriyet University and Sivas City Centre. Integrating the bridge with the boulevard by combining its form and structure, taking an avantgarde looking design approach to obtain coherency between plan and sections, and harmonizing the bridge with its topography are the three main concepts shaping the design. The pedestrian and cycle routes that are surrounded by a heterogeneously yet continuously diffused vegetation to encourage an ecological city life-style become one of the most important proposals of the project. The green areas that are to be integrated along with the new route (the bridge) organizing the transportation will be nourished by the water flow of Kızılırmak. The greenery will also expose the demand for cultural and social activities around the new pedestrian and vehicle traffic flow. Thus, this demand and activating the site becomes equally important as the bridge’s architectural structure.

BORKLUCE SCULPTURE

Design Director : Melike Altınışık In collabration with B-Arch: Eda Tekirli Intern: Ali Uçar Type: Competition Award: First Mention Client: İzmir Karaburun Municipality

DESIGN APPROACH The aim was to understand and interpret through a sculpture design the social and philosophical values of a historical figure, Börklüce Mustafa, who became a symbol of equality, peace and justice of Anatolia in 600 years ago. Respecting the existing contextual patterns of a rural site, Karaburun, the sculpture heads for the unification of its people and creates a new social space for all. The design’s strong connection with the ground and its dependence on its users demonstrates its avoidance of a hierarchic ideology and evokes existing within a balance. The sculpture does not dictate its visitors on how to use their space but gives them the freedom to move or just be both inside and around it. Thus the sculpture will transform each ‘visitor’ into a fragment of a whole. The floating and reflective surface of the sculpture is held by a steel structure. It projects uniquely abstract and erratic views from the sky for each observer and creates a fluid reality.

VARNA LIBRARY

Design Director: Melike Altınışık Position: Project Leader In collabration with B-Arch: Eda Tekirli M-Arch: Muhammed Chabarek Intern: Ali Uçar Type: Comission Client: Kartal Municipality

DESIGN APPROACH With the design of the new Varna Library the city of Varna will allow an emergence of a new space which will enable people the chance to explore the art, history, and culture accumulated since the presence of the city. It will merge the local and the visitor community of all generations under a single roof with big public plaza in front to cherish Varna’s multicultural nature. The indoor spaces has been organised by following the access limitations of open, controlled and restricted access zones and the Cores and Book Storage (Archive) is located in the Center of the Building which allows open plan function all around. The Mesh Façade is designed to increase the energy efficiency by providing shading. The flow of İnformation rethought at a city scale by creating strong links within people and the urban context. The iconic character of the library creates the fluidity of the perception which is combined with the soul of the contemporary Library Design in the city of Varna.

KEPEZ LANDMARK

Design Director : Melike Altınışık In collabration with B-Arch :Demet Çekiç Intern: Ali Uçar Type: Competition Award: First Mention Client: Antalya Muratpasa Municipality

DESIGN APPROACH Antalya Kepez Landmark design proposal, carrying the spirit of its age and Antalya, creates its identity without contemporary formal-urban concerns, by adapting itself to the topography, taking into consideration of native, natural and cultural features (being Mediterranean ), with its modern iconic formation based on timelessness concept and aesthetic design integrated to the nature and urban context. The project site, located on the slope of Mount Mazı, Northern part of Antalya, has unique Mediterranean features like its topography, natural vegetation, climate, its flora etc. This design proposal has been developed by taking into consideration these native features. Main purpose of the design is to get maximum result with minimum touch to the existing project site. Therefore, we created each unit in the program list by making little change in natural topography lines except the landmark building, The landmark building (The tower) is located at the highest level of the Project site and directed to the city center. This directionality is emphasized by a panoramic bridge surrounded with tropical trees. This green axis connects ‘panorama basket’ that provides a wide-sweeping view of the city/the Mediterranean Sea /Mount Mazı and ‘panorama amphitheatre ’ that hosts socio-cultural events. This proposal was planned according to the development plan given by the municipality. According to these plans, the project site is going to be surrounded by residential and commercial buildings in the future. Furthermore, city center is going to be closer to our project site. Main design decisions were made by taking into account these changes and possibilities. Our project site could be the only green zone in its close environment. According to the future development plans, Eastern and Western sides of the project site is going to be full of residential buildings. So, when you look at the plan organization, you can feel the stress applied by these residential zones which result with staying away from these sides.

BEYLIKDUZU BRIDGE

Design Director : Melike Altınışık \ Elif Erdine In collabration with M-Arch: Gül Ertekin B-Arch :Demet Çekiç Intern: Ali Uçar Type: Competition Award: Third Mention Client: Beylikdüzü Municipality

DESIGN APPROACH BeylikdĂźzĂź Recreational Valley and Bridges National Competition has been organized by Beylikduzu Municipality in order to receive proposals for the rehabilitation and design of the Recreational Valley located in Beylikduzu, the canal running along the valley in the north-south axis, and its two bridges, the Pedestrian Crossing and the Motorway Bridge. The lack of green spaces in Istanbul, mainly caused by the high density of population and the constant flux of migration, has been a well-known fact for decades. Beylikduzu, a town on the western suburbs of Istanbul, poses itself with a high potential to offer green spaces not only for its immediate surroundings, but more importantly for Istanbul on an urban scale. Future zoning plans for Beylikduzu include the realization of numerous higher education facilities, emphasizing the fact that the area will become an attraction point for young population. Moreover, TUYAP Fair Convention and Congress Centre, located on the north-west of the site, is renowned for bringing together Turkish and foreign trade fairs as well as visitors from around Istanbul. As such, the project site, the Recreational Valley, should be equipped with facilities and characteristics which will have an overall impact on the Istanbul population with varying demographics. The Main Theme devised for the future of the Recreational Valley is the realization of Istanbul Urban Park, which comprises a holistic vision into generating green areas, sports and cultural facilities with an ecological approach. The urban and local scale proposals of the project all feed into and support the main concept.

THE PAZARS: The Urban and Tectonics Structures of Istanbul’s Open Markets Turkey’s neighborhood markets, pazars, penetrate every neighborhood one day a week for centuries. Yet, neither this ephemeral marketplace nor the man-made generative structure that defines its practice has changed with any significance despite social, cultural and technological transformations. The pazars’ fundamental practice of place-making, in its absolute agility, simplicity and responses to terrain and climate, has been nearly perfected along with the choreography of set-up and take-down. The structure is a distinctive practice of co-creation; using the forces of kinetics and redundancy to create compact or expansive market place. What is unique about it is the use of passive open space, like streets, watersheds or residual lands, but never an active public space as parks, highways or public
