The strategy studied to achieve this result is to bound ecological problem with social issue, because only a shared vision of transformation, a new utopia, can catalyze this big change, and because ecological awareness can actually strengthen the urban identity and the ownership feeling whose loss is at the basis of many social urban problems.

The starting point of this thesis is the consciousness of ecological and environmental problems that our planet is preparing to face due to the lifestyle western countries chose in the past fifty years causing climate change, biodiversity loss and resources depletion. My research aims to give an answer to a disturbing question: if the theories are now found and the solutions have been investigated and studied for years, why so little has been done to change the situation? The relationship between settlements and territory has faded until it disappears and now they depend on the global market and its continuous flux of goods, energy and money. This thesis suggest to come back to places to construct local resilience.

The thesis starts with a theoretical research on ecology, and in particular its social implications, and on the answers cities give to these kind of problems, both as bottom-up and top-down strategies. Then the thesis focus on the project area, a little historical centre, that is beginning to be abandoned, in Emilia Romagna region, near Forì. The analysis shows the invisible infrastructure the city needs to manage its waste, water system, energy and goods flux.

11
It is necessary to join the highest number of social group in the decision process, because the city is made of the interaction between the many activity and wishes that take place there.
7
1
MIND THE GAP / be inclusive
2
BEYOND LANDSCAPE Design need to focus more on the concept and on the process and less on the shape of its subject, aesthetics has a lot to do with management.
3

3
OPEN INFRASTRUCTURE Building infrastructure means to create the conditions to make things possible, then it will be all aboute each one individual decision.

PRIVATE vs PUBLIC We need to be more attached to the public space as if it was part of our own house. At the same time we need to be conscious of the impact the way we live in our own house has on the ecosystem, so we should see the private space under a public point of view.
9
3
LIFE CYCLE Study a project from birth to death in order to include it in the nature cycle and give the materials a second or third life.
2
7
4
HAND MADE Self construction of space has an educational meaning and it helps dwellers to perceive the public space as the place where common values are expressed.
3
1
LOCAL KNOW-HOW To give an actual conclusion to a theoretical idea we need to imagine a process that people can understand and care, so it should start from local know-how and best practice.
5
7
REPLICABLE MODEL Each result is an example and a model; it can be found and repeated in different places. It also allows to continue the same theme of project in different time.
3
8
OPEN SOURCE CITY The open source city is the city that everybody knows and everybody can modify, implement and improve.
5
10
SELF-GENERATING PROCESS The process must self-generate, after the take off phase, in order to continue to create urban identities and urban communities. Once it has started, its growth is spontaneous.

PHASE 0 // AWARNESS TIME: 6 months.
9
11
PHASE 1 // TAKE OFF TIME: 1-2 years.
9
PHASE 2 // IMPLEMENTATION TIME: 3-4 years.
NEW URBAN ROLES The dweller is the person who physically takes care of the city. The architect becomes the one who catalyze the spatial transition process that take place and shape the landscape.
PHASE 3 // EXPANSION TIME: 5-10 years.
PHASE 4 // UTOPIA TIME: one generation
SITE: no one - ideas are in the air.
SITE: focus on strategic point, urban acupunc-
SITE: growth of the previous phase points.
SITE: a network connecting the points is built up.
SITE: the place is the whole territory.
GOALS: catch the attention on the environmental problems, create a network among people who share the same values. PLAYERS: the association that start a collab oration with amministration. ACTIONS: conference, expositions, workshops, cineforum.
GOALS: create a shared vision. PLAYERS: the association that join people that want to work actually on the same concrete theme. ACTIONS: the main themes are waste, with local compost, food, with a mini-poultry farm and water, with a fountaine.
GOALS: the growth of the previous projects give them an importance in the urban landscape, the transformation stars. PLAYERS: the association that start a collab oration with amministration. ACTIONS: food, edible garden and urban forest, waste, waste collection centre.
GOALS: this is the most important phase, when the change become ordinary. PLAYERS: the big investments required are done by the amministration. ACTIONS: shop and workshop to sell food and products from the local network, urban camping, cogeneration, phytodepuration.
GOALS: the utopia is a not-existing phase, it’s the perfect world PLAYERS: everyb ody, the assocition do not exist anymore as long as everyb ody join its ideas. ACTIONS: retrofitting of exsisting buildings.

TOKYO REPLAY CENTRE MULTIPURPOSE SPACE FOR KARAOKE AND MUSIC IN AKIABARA, TOKYO TOKYO, JAPAN Akihabara is internationally known as the meeting point for otaku people around the world. Gadgets and products are for sale everywhere. Innovation and tradition meet at a single point. There is no better place for the Tokyo Replay Center than this central district of Tokyo. It is full of shops where you can buy new items, used, share equipment, etc. Akihabara Station is also one of the most important stations in Tokyo. The urban grid of Akihabara is made up of very narrow and very long plots. All of these conditions, put together with the high density of Tokyo’s urbanization forces most of the buildings in the neighborhood to grow in height.

THE IDEA User s creativity plays the main role in an undefined and multi-faceted volume. The pubblic space, wrapped in a glass box, is fragmented into small and cozy islands to enhance sociality and comfort. A complex interwoven space, as opposite to the straight forward path offered by the May Way Two. The whole ground floor is a diffused shopping area, where the shops are organised in a market/like arrangement. A tree structure, redundant routes, plenty of cozy rooms and rooftop terrace are the elements of an environment designed to break with the ordinary pubic spaces and make you feel like home. Karaoke rooms liquid crystal glass switches from clear to translucent and brightly lit when in use.

LUDOPARK THE POPULATION
Bella Fuori is a competition promoted by Bologna City Council and "Fondazione del Monte" a private foundation, that this year took place for the third time. The main purpose of the project was to is to provide new public spaces in some outlying areas of Bologna which have problems of urban blight or poor social cohesion. As this project wants to impact on life quality before the competition all the selected architects together with the neighbourhood dwellers were involved in activities, debates and discussion to give voice to the inhabitants' wishes. This process lasted for two month and gave us the chance to understand more people’s perception of the place.

Data about the population shows an increase of almost 500 familes in the past ten years, with many single-person nuclei but also a significant number of families with 6 or more members, and a remarkable growth in the population of foreign origin. It is a picture that corresponds to a environment in rapid transformation and increasingly heterogeneous in terms of the everyday, cultural and social habits.
ludopark goals What we wanted to achive with the project was a public space for everybody, where in particoular children could find a good place to play together.
1. The site of the competition is in the periphery of the city and two heavy infrastructures, a railway and an highway, divide it from the rest of the city. As a results the neighbourhood is introverted and not very lively. In particular the people living there feel that the city centre is far and that is dangerous to get there walking or by bike. The first goal of the project was to connect the area inside itself and with the bike path C4 that cross the city beginning in correspondence of the highway underpass.

INTEGRATION PLAY OUTDOOR CONNECTIVITY Because in a district which is rapidly changing and growing very multicultural integration of children also helps adults to develop social skills!
Because children who can play outdoor without their parents’ supervision are more responsable, healty and have a longer attention span!
Because in an area cutted out from the city by heavy infrastructures improving connections is a way to help people to enjoy the city life!

DYNAMIC HUB
The relax hub focus more on adults and old people, here many benches under the trees create the perfect place to stop with friends.
The playful hub is between the entry of the new primary school and the entry of the park, this is a place for kids and parents, to wait and play.
The protected hub is in particoular thought for the younger childreen who play under their parents supervision.
In the dynamic hub the focus is on boys and girls needs, it could be an aggregation point for them in the neighbourhood.

THE MAP The project concept is very simple: a double path for walking and biking connects a series of hubs dislocated in the fragmented competition site. The path cross the entire neighbourhood and connect it with the city centre while the hubs along the way are there to emphasize some special points. The idea of each hub, based on Van Eyck theories, is to have just few concrete elements that can be flexible to different uses, each hub is also thought to offer things to a wide range of people in this way we wanted to achieve a more dynamic atmosphere.

ANALYSIS Bologna is a city well known in Italy for the engagement of citizen in political and social issue, the public space in the past was really where people used to meet, discuss and, sometimes argue, about common problem and possible solution. This value of the space started to vanish many years ago, and right now the emotional connection between people and places is less present then ever. The city is made of his inhabitants, and their actual involvement in the city life is fundamental for the perceived ambient. What we need to do is to fight the loss of interest of the community in the city life and to support the identity of the place.

The info graphic shows how no entertainment activities (in purple) take place at sunday morning, but in this moment it’s possible to find sporting and cultural ones.
Saturday afternoon is one of the times when the city comes alive more. there are only few white areas, where no activities take place.
On Wdenesday evening the events are mainly related to entertainment . Through this kind of display, you can easily identify in which areas the city is more lively.
IDEE *Not physical intervention but virtual infrastructures to gain a systemic view that emphasizes the existing activities. *Create an image of the city shared among the citizen and made of each one contribute. *Investigate the city identity and increase urban cohesion through participation and activism.
CONCEPT *An application for pc, tablet and smartphone which gives to the dweller an interactive picture of city possibilities. *A presonal agenda of bologna’s events to show out the many on going activities in details and just at once. *A device for the citizens that allowed them both to be informed about every event in which he could be interested in, and to submit new event, personally organized, giving his personal contribute to the life of the city. *A structure based on a mobility-support system that provides mobility road indications and encourages moving using public transport. *A program that improve as much as it is used by the people, thanks to the feedback of the users.

Through conceptual views of the map of bologna, the application gives an intuitive perception of the number and type of activities going on in the city at the considered time. This type of display within the application does not have a practical function but rather aims, on a theoretical level, to improve the collective consciousness and the cohesion of the city. In the images above three categories of example have been considered, illustrating how the use of the city changes during the week or within a single day.

Anyone who organizes an urban activity open to the public will be able to load it into the application Carpe Diem using his 'user profile'; it will necessary to indicate a category in order to classify and insert the event into the system, the idea of a taxonomy of urban activities is fundamental to keep users informed about what they might not want to miss. These activities will be visualized by every single user in a different way, depending on its features.

The activity is represented with a schematic symbol that provides some information and that remains associated to the activity itself in all the different screens of the application. This symbol is formed by a series of concentric dashed rings, so that each ring is associated with a color, in correspondence with the selected categories, while the number of strokes is proportional to the number of users who will participate. The symbol so grows over time, providing a useful feedback to understand the topic, the importance and the echo of activities. 20 M I N

THE CITY The outcome of this process aims to reassemble the fragmented and partial view of everyone in an image that represents the mood of the city and the fluxes through its space. We want to shows to the user his/her contribution in creating the city, not physically, but considering its intangible aspects. The application is completely geo-referenced, in this way it aims to reconnect the virtual square, on which information circulates and discussions take place, with the physical square which, instead, appears increasingly emptied of its meaning and identity.
INTERACTIVITY From the description page, the user can access a menu that lists the possibilities of interaction that are offered him. He/she can choose in this way: * ATTENDING to report his presence; * ADD TO FAVORITES to follow the activities identified by the same categories; * WEB to go to the web page of the event; * ADD A PHOTO to upload a photo taken during the activity, which will be also displayed on the screen plots; * SHARE to link the event in a social networks.
MOBILITY The application also offers a navigation system for pedestrians and cyclists, which works in connection with the website of the local public transport company (TPER) and other websites like Google Maps, and also carries all the information about bike lanes and bike-friendly roads. This will help users to be more environmentally responsible, trying to unravel the tangle of information currently available but not easily accessible. CALENDAR - this is the most practical view, it makes possible to have a list of all the activities day to day, showing also time and place. This is the only one that joins the symbol that encodes the activity with its name and type, making the consultation particularly fast, but traditional.
PARTEC I PATE
MAP - this screen opens onto a conceptual representation of the city and an overview of the latter, as shown in the third table. By zooming on the part of interest, you enter the traditional map and you can browse and discover what is happening around you.

AFFINITY - this kind of view can be defined “gravitational”, because it is based both on the position and the interests expressed by the user. In fact, more an activity matches the category of interest of the users and nearer to the user it takes place and more close to the viewfinder representing the user (in the center of the screen) the symbol will be displayed.

THE COMPETITION Carpe Diem is an application for mobile devices that is part of temporary projects of an aggregative use, which are realized not planning a physical intervention, but rather creating a virtual infrastructure that enhances and put in relation to the wide offer of activities already existing in the area. We believe that the quality of public space results from any activity designed for the population and that a fundamental contribution comes from active citizenship that, with its spontaneous commitment, forms the many facets of the character of the city. The contemporary city has a problem of collective identity, weakened, among other things, by the loss of the process of self-construction of the city. In these times when identity is no longer expressed in terms of physical representation, we suggest to rebuild a connection that allows the collective expression. The application, in the logic of the smart city that allow you to hack the city, wants to create a shared and interactive image of the possibilities offered and, thanks to the contribution of each, represent the identity of the community.

BORNEO 2.0 FAMILY HOUSE PROJECT, BORNEO, AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS
This project takes place in the western part of Amsterdam's docks where a master plan by the studio West8 guides the transformation into a residential neighborhood. The main feature of the design concept was the balance between the high-density houses pattern which permit the maximum of architectural variation and which occupy the largest space and some big blocks that become landmarks in the vast residential area. The presence of the canals was also important to achieve high density with low rise buildings which were not supposed to overcome the empty space. In this project we design a new family house for the low rise residential area, it has to be integrated in the context and to propose our point of view playing with the rules of the West8’s masterplan.

THE IDEA The main ideas behind this project are, on one hand, the possibility to interrupt the continuous facade on the street side created by the houses situated side by side and to give the chance to perceive from there the water on the other side, and, on the other hand, the clear separation between the common space where the family stays togheter and the more privite space for each one. This gives shape to two different blocks, one, on the canal side, host the living room, the diningroom and the kitchen and is conceived as continuos space and the other one, on the street side, where there are the privete bedrooms for the parents and the child. In this way it is possible to achieve some indipendence inside the family life. 2011 / BORNEO 2.0 / 2

1 / URBANECHO / 2011
The project involves the design of a new residential and commercial settlement in “Prati di Caprara”, a disused area in Bologna. This area, located in the outskirts and not far from the historic center is characterized by important physical limits: the arterial road on the left, that lowers passing under the railway; the huge rail depot in the north part and the hospital to the south create barriers that effecti- vely separate the area from the rest of the city. It was therefore decided to try to preserve as much as possible the existing greenery, using the trees to protect the area from the road noise and creating a large park respect zone of the railway, in the hospital’s one we decide to put and rearrange the gardens that already was in the area and sports facilities provided for the new settlement.

The project provides two orders of separate paths: the driveway to ensure a car access to any court and the pedestrian one with shops( in orange in the plan), which is connected to the network of paths that enter the park behind. The courts are raised above the street level to separate the internal green from the public sector. Each court has a structure which does not divide clearly private and public space, but there are a number of shades that allow a complex and more free use of the space. The units are thought to save space in order to contain the prices, the presence of common space could actually support daily life. HOUSE BALCONY

GRANADA CONSERVATORY SCHOOL FOR MUSIC, DANCE AND VISUAL ARTS The project for the Conservatory of Music, Dance and Visual Arts of Granada proposes the creation of a public building to reconnect the area of the city under Camino de Ronda to the city center. The chosen site is characterized by being the point of intersection a number of important lines for the city structure: the axis of the street, an uninterrupted succession of facades from the Seventies and Eighties, the axis of the river, the Rio Genil, and the lineal park that connects the city with the surrounding countryside, which preserves a compact shape and defined edges. The intersection point is at present nothing more than an abandoned space used in part for parking and in part colonized by vegetation, the space is hidden from view by large billboards and thus excluded from the road when it could enrich the quality of public space. The main idea of the project is just to take advantage of the construction of the public to enrich the area with a lively public space. It was decided then to divide the program in two main buildings; the first one is out of land and hosts the climbing gym, dance classrooms, the cafe and the main entrance with the foyer and the auditorim. This body will be in adherence to the contiunous block which remained unfinished with a bild wall on the site side. The second part of the required program was inserted in the difference between grownd levels existing at the two opposit edge of the site, in this way it was possible to create a public square on the roof of this part just at the road level. The connection is anyway guaranteed by two ramps that permit a continuous percepiton of the space between the street and the green path towards the country. The idea of architecture that disappears could certainly be out of place in such a dense area of the city, but anyway it is prefered an approach in which the builing grows respecting ist context, more giving space to the city than taking it. 1 / CONSERVATORY / 2012
