I’m currently working on my thsesis to graduate in July, from the National Technical University of Athens with Masters in Architectural Enginnering. Through my university projects I have dealed with d i f f e r e n t concepts, themes and scales. Though through the various architecture competitions, I have worked on mainly architecture synthesis and design. My passion also beyond the architecture design, is designing construction details. The designing process is a hard, but worthy procedure in learning and developing architectural skills. For me, architecture is not only about design, it is about the way each of us experiences life.

Amsterdan Children’s Playschool

Project Amsterdan Children’s Playschool Location Amsterdam Status International Competition Awarded Honorable Mention Area 1000m2 Year 2016 Collabarators Florian Liakos Alexis Visvinis

Our main influence on designing this playschool for this competition was Aldo’s Van Eyck’s playgrounds and his ideology where the children see the whole city as a playground we wanted to create a space that would become part of Amsterdam and would open up and relate to the city. On that way the proposal combines educational classrooms with patios that set different privacy gradients organized by the basic geometrical shapes, circle square triangle. As Aldo Van Eyck so strongly believed, the basic shapes help the children’s mind to organize, function and learn unconsciously about the basic structures in an architectural space in a way where the physical formation is just as important as an intellectual.

So the kindergarten is mainly a roof with openings that maximize the sun light and educational classrooms with patios which relate to each other in a way where the children are free to play and learn in protected areas during class hours. Also there is direct contact with the outside in a way that the children relate to the physical formation of their city. Lastly, the kindergarten was designed to be open to the society and to relate with the public space. So we created spaces were different events can be held and, in addition to that the whole kindergarten can be opened up in a way that its spaces can be used in combination with the events held in the area.

Poveglia University Island Campus

Project Poveglia University Island Campus Location Venice Status International Competition Awarded Honorable Mention Area 25000m2 Year 2016 Collabarators Florian Liakos Alexis Visvinis

Since the island Povilia has its center at the historic city of Venice, our first aim at theis competition was to identify some of special features of the floating city, famous for its rich architecture. Our observation was that Venice consists of free flowing repeating units-buildings, with atriums and façades that have a consistant rhythm. Povilia on the other hand is an island that has big free spaces of green and nature, as well as gaps that have been created by the pre-existing buildings. In order to integrate with the island we created an architecture concept that would respond to the above. So as our main theme was the repeating free flowing units-buildings.Firstly we connected the pre-existing buildings with four roof protected

Secondly since the size of the university required new buildings, we decided to respect and restore and reuse the old ones without many changes, and created new buildings which consisted of a units turning it in to a building with a an atrium. They are placed in such way and in such heights that they continue the imaginary boundary of the old ones, and respecting the nature of Povilia Island they are placed at the free green spaces mentioned above. Also in dialogue to the old we placed windows to the new buildings in the same rhythm as the old. Last but not least the construction of the new buildings is a façade of many louvers and by blurry glass that dresses the concrete building, in order to give the building an impression of the a venetian romantic style and in order to conserve the “ghostly sense” that has been created throughout the years

Lighthouse Art Hotel

Project Lighthouse Art Sea Hote Location Syracuse Status International Competition Awarded with Honorable Mention moung 330 entries Area 3000m2 Year 2016 Collabarators Florian Liakos Alexis Visvinis

This competition aimed on emphasizing the existence of the lighthouse in Syracuse, Italy, by asking to design a hotel at the site around the lighthouse. So for us it was very important to highlight the existence of the lighthouse Murro di Porco. So our designing concept was mainly inspired by the lighthouse and of its remaining at the center of the site to remind its meaning and emphasize on its history. Also our scenario was related to historic and traditional features of the historical center of Syracuse’s, as well as the natural features of the landscape

Mediterranean – Rock, Sun, Sea Syracuses – Traditional stone buildings, architectural typologies of facades, many buildings together one-next to each other with one sided faced looking to one direction, roof-type structures, hue of beige gold color which has been created by the years from aged stone and many historical and archeological piece of art and museums, from the ancient times. Murro di Porco – steep cliff and harsh vegetation, has very important marine species named as plemmirio marine area which is a protected and which can be explored by diving undersea and exploring the biological sea world, underwater there can be found different archeological itinerary.

Lighthouse Art Hotel

The lighthouse is in the center of the site and concept is inspired from the circular trackÂŹ of light that the lighthouse does when it lights-up. So we placed the two main structures of the hotel on a conceivable circle around the lighthouse. These two structures were placed left and right of the lighthouse, on the circular track and close to the sea. So using 4 tangents of the circle we created two x-shaped buildings. Also, in order to reserve as much as possible of the areas elements, the structures of the hotel were placed at the extension of the pre-existing paths of the lighthouse area and at the most flat areas of the site. The form of the building was inspired by the roof-type buildings of Syracuse. Finally the facade of the two x-shaped buildings, while approaching the site, has a pattern inspired from the lighthouse’s light, meaning that the frequency of the light which has a pattern of full and fill is imprinted on the openings of the building which extrudes from the main back-façade.

Since the center of the interest is the lighthouse, which worked throughout the year, it was important for us to keep the hotel open all four seasons. So we decided to make it an art station, in order to attract artist but also people interested in art, throughout the year. Also we led to this decision because of the many inspirations that an artist can have from the traditional center of Syracuse, to the natural thesaurus of the landscape, as referred above. Also it was important for us to separate functionally the hotel rooms from the studio workshops and exhibition places. So the hotel room is placed on the right-side, as approaching the site, and the galleries and art studios on the left side

Food and Wellness Club

Project Food and Wellness Club Location Bologna Status International Competition Awarded with Honorable Mention moung 210 entries Area 4000m2 Year 2015 Collabarators Florian Liakos Apostolis Giannaras

The Project

Spatial Context

At this competition it was asked to design a wellness area for the classy visitors of the F.I. CO food expo taken place in Bologna, willing to discover both nutrition and body care.

F.I.C.O. Wellness center for us was a space where the body and mind would relax, a place that would inspire elevation and balance. One of the first aims, while designing the project, was to emphasize on the meaning of the water, having always in mind that the aqua zone was the core of the project and that every space had to be in a close relationship to it. Our goal was to create a space that inspire, excite and activate all of the human senses of the visitor. Having the above in mind we designed a wellness space without a form, a space that would create an atmosphere such, that the visitor would dedicate himself completely to wellness.

Food and Wellness Club

Sustainability The matter of sustainability was also another factor that played a key role in the designing of the project. That was due to the large amount of water which by every mean is anti-ecological. Therefore, where there were water spaces, we placed underÂŹneath spaces where the water can be contained, filtered, cleaned and recycled. Also we designed the building having in mind the importance of energy-autonomy, so we situated photovoltaic panels on the roof. They were placed on a grid which became a construction and synthetic tool and finally an aesthetic choice of the roof of the building. Last but not least the choice of the material of the volumes was ideal for thermal water pools, since it is a mineral, that in combination with its dark color, draws sunlight and helps warm the material.

Shenzhen, SQ Expo and housing

This project concerned an intervention at the old industrial area of Shenzhen, SQ, in order to convert it in to a new productive area. Our thinking led us to believe that it is important to take advantage of the direct relationship of SQ ,through China’s national railway, with (a)the other cities of Pearl river Delta, (b)the rest of China and (c)Hong Kong. We decided to design a hub on the intersection of these rails with the area, so as to succeed a densification of random social should introduce visitors to the interests they can find in inner SQ, while being an autonomous attraction for foreigners as a convention and expo center.

Project Urban design 5th year studio Location Shenzhen, SQ region, China Status 5th Year studio Area 15000m2 Year Academic Year 2014-2015 Collabarators Stamatina Kostiani Elisavet Ktena Tutors Andreas Kourkoulas Ariadni Vozani Athanasios Pagonis

After locating the station on the block of the old railway cargo station and turning it into an expo - exchanging center, there was the need for transferring the thick passenge population to the inner SQ, choosing linear spaces in the geometrical center of each region (Sungang,Qingshuihe). So we created to urban enviroments one in each area. The tool for creating the station and, in the meantime, the more local commercial centers are the train-rails themselves. We imagined the national rails extending themselves in space and receiving a vertical forceso as to get off the ground. In this way, a kind of “wave” is created, hosting, underneath its width, the hub we are envisioning between Sungang and Quingshine.

Project Public Library Location Ilioupoli, Athens Status 4th Year studio Area 1100 m2 Year Academic Year 2013-2014 Collabarators Stamatina Kostian Tutors Sofia Tsiraki Vaselios Tsouras

This project concerns a public regional library at Ilioupoli, Athens. The main concept of the architecture design was to from the landscape in such a way that it would direct the visitor to the heart of the building. From there they would go up the main core of the building which is the library, standing high above the landscape as s clear geometry, reminding the form of the neighbourhood buildings, and last but not least to be seen from far away.

Project Student Acomodation Location Exarhia, Athens Status 3rd Year studio Area 700 m2 Year Academic Year 2012-2013 Collabarators Dimitrios Gianelos Tutors Konstantina-Valentini Karvountzi

At this project it was asked to design an accomodation for architecture students. The main concept of the project, since the site was at a crowded area of Athens, was to create an atrium at the core of the site. So two main building, one on each side of the road would create this atrium and would separate the rooms of the accomodation on one building and the working spaces and the cafe on the other smaller building. The height of the two buildings were adjusted to the height of the buildings next to them, and oriented in a way that the sunlight would be appropriate for the rooms and for the atrium.
