CHORA are currently collaborating with the Chinese firm ALYA for the conversion of a former concrete factory site into a sports park. The project is part of a regeneration plan of the Wusong riverside in Shangai. The park provides facilites for education, and sports & leisure, both outdoors and indoors. The project has to take into account several factors: limited budget, short realization times, proximity of industrial activities and 24h usability. The distinguishing feature of the project is the use of “gabion baskets� filled with the rubble from the concrete factory, as a main design concept. These baskets become the construction module of walls and blocks that define the landscape. In this way sustainability takes shape through massive molitic structures that gain a significant social peculiarity. The project is developed in two phases: PHASE 1_ is the storage area of the concrete factory _ 13,800 m2 PHASE 2_ is the area of the concrete factory and the pit _ 259,000 m2

Phase 1 The north part is the first stage of the regeneration project, the concrete factory will be desmanteled at a later stage. During phase 1 the north part needs to be sheilded from the factory, which is still in operation. Consequently a big wall is placed between this area and the rest as a protective element, opened by three gates for access in the next phase, during which the north part will be amalgamated into the whole final park.

The former storage area includes approximately 55,000 m3 of end product, 30% of which is the rubble that will be used to fill the gabion baskets for the construction of the wall, the terrace, and the monolith.

CHORA are currently working with the city of Zhalantun, Inner Mongolia Province, China, to revise their urban development plans and build a number of smart city pilot projects. In April 2013, we came up with a longterm vision for the city’s expansion, combining Smart City planning with the analogy of a flower. Zhalantun has a rich cultural heritage with many layers of history but has also has great ambition, to form a new identity that stretches far into the past and the future. Its expansion needs to happen organically and in harmony with the existing city and countryside, like the spread of Mongolian flowers through a landscape. The forms of the flowers will form a new distinct architectural language to improve the identity of the new districts.

The area is located next to the Jiangning Exhibition Hall and between two important bodies of water: the Baijia Lake and the Qinhuai River. The aim is to create a modern hub of innovation and creativity where talent and knowledge in technology, business, science and art interconnect. The project is also characterized by social inclusion, sustainability and creativity. The Hub consists of a smart networks with low energy structures plus energy producing systems. I propose a new urban scenario where natural elements interact with sustainable technologies. Communal spaces that connects people, supplies energy for the adjacent districts and implements the goal to purify water and air. This new scenario can be a bridge towards showing how a future of lower energy use and lower carbon emissions in a city can look like while providing a high quality of life for local residents and creating a symbol of hope and renewal for the city.

The project area is crossed by a strong infrastructure system, that creates a big rift. The basis of the project is to use and modify this infrastructure making
it the main place of connection in which all the activities surrounding relate. The “PLUS “ can be distinguished in three different parts :
- the intersection of the two axes form the “plus”square, designed to create a flexible space to accommodate different functions and public events.
- the north-south axis serves as a link to the rest of the city. So it is characterized by the presence of crossing paths

The HUB as... ... a FILTER for the QINHUAI RIVER and a WASTEWATER REUSE SYSTEM
CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS within the Hub, consists in a system of tanks and canals for the phytodepuration of the Qinhuai River water and the local reuse of run-off water and gray water. This system of artificial naturalness has the purpose of the requalification of the area, on several fronts: environmental, urban - to design a new public spatiality – and economic because some of the existing structures are reused as research, education and monitoring centres.
In addition, to improve the sustainability of the intervention, some existing elements are reused and boosted: the system of canals and the pumping station located in the north-east, next to the Qinhuai River.
The HUB as... ... an URBAN AIR FILTER The project aims to adopt different natural filtering systems, based on the PHOTOCATALYTIC ACTION, to remove the urban air pollutants. After finding the main winds of the area, have been positioned and shaped these systems in strategic points and where possible, buildings and some urban spaces, have been modelled for this purpose.
The HUB as... ... an ENERGY GENERATOR A SMART GRID for the production and use of energy only from renewable sources to create an autonomous self-sufficient system. Different elements and flows are included into the urban fabric to form new scenarios in which technological advancement is not the ultimate goal but it becomes a means to design a new eco-active urbanity, aimed at improving the quality of relational spaces. Therefore the intervention pursues the principle of the hedonistic sustainability.
The HUB as... ... a WEB GATE The “WEB-HUB�, an interactive platform that connects the HUB to the Internet and to a specific network that characterize different palces where people can connect, have info about it and interact with the system.

The project involves the creation of different spaces dedicated to culture, leisure and education, through the inclusion of a shopping mall, a sports centre, several dining options, an auditorium, a outdoor forum for performances, pubs and clubs, a library, a University, In addition, in the north, is also provided a residential settlement equipped with semi-private park, underground parking and commercial activities on the ground floor. This is inserted between the “marina� on the north-west and a large square opening in front of the sea on the south-east. Regarding the fruition of the area, large underground parking has been foreseen only in some strategic points so as to create on the gorund level a blocked space, Indeed the area is completely penetrable by light vehicles and pedestrians and the urban space is characterized by the alternation of parks, paths and squares, becoming a flexible space that can accommodate various public activities.

Urban requalification of a wide brownfield and a vegetable market. The vegetable market includes a Baroque church of which only the roof is visible because the new ground level was built to a higher level. The west part is a storage area with some residual green. Furthermore the area is longitudinally split by a tube line trench. The project involves the establishment of a large park for leasure and cultural activities. Project actions: . reconversion of the existing vegetable market structures to temporary accomodations; . a large square in the southern part to link the nearby tube station and the area; . 4 public buildings ( an auditorium, a museum, a library and an academy of arts); . a path along the border that serves as a link with the surrounding city and as a buffer between the driveways and the park; . a large central wood as a green lung, planted with the typical Mediterranean greenery;
