I am a young architect and urban planner with 3 years of experience in international architecture companies in France and Italy. Over the past years, I have been employed by Jourda Architectes in Paris and Mario Cucinella Architects in Bologna, Italy. During the course of my career I have been involved in the design of diverse projects worldwide, working from initial to construction stages with the constant ambition of reaching high quality standards. Efficacy of communication and graphical skills have always played a major role in the process of my work. In recent years I have had the opportunity to focus on sustainability and energy-saving technologies, lastly through the active participation at the annual international event on sustainable architecture and urban design, PLEA 2015 Passive Low Energy Architecture.

01 I PROFESSIONAL WORK New School in Guastalla Project: Mario Cucinella Architects Location: Guastalla, Italy Year: 2014-2015 (built) Type: public competition Client: Comune di Guastalla Surface: 1400 sqm Cost: 1600 euro/sqm Team: Mario Cucinella, Marco dell’Agli (project leader), Alberto Casarotto, Irene Sapienza, Alberto Bruno; Yuri Costantini (model) Construction: Scisciani e Frascarelli; Rubner Holzbau SpA; Saitec Company srl; Promo SpA Consultancy: Greencure (landscape) Photography: Moreno Maggi, Irene Sapienza Graphics: ZUP Design

Two schools were severely damaged by the earthquake that struck the region Emilia Romagna in May 2012 and the new kindergarten is to reconstitute one of them. The construction system is based on the multiplication and variation of wooden portal frames. The result is a fluid transparent space keeping the inhabitants in close communication with the surrounding park. The school garden is designed to represent a teaching path stimulating senses through the choice of materials and plants. Initially, I have taken part in defining the earliest concept ideas. Concerning design development, my tasks included editing masterplan documents, designing classrooms, special rooms and customized furniture, and managing the cooperation with our landscape consultant for the design of the didactic garden.

The new headquarters for the Unipolsai Group in Milano is part of the Porta Nuova Project, consisting in the renewal of a 340.000 m² area for the realization of a new financial district, a recent prestigious location in the Milanese and national architectural scene. The building is a 76 m tower with a timber structural glazed envelope. The base is a spaciuos common hall connected to the main square, the auditorium and cafeteria. Offices and training areas occupy the middle 15 storeys of the tower and a central void stretches from the hall to the highest end of the building. On top, a green terrace hosts several exclusive spaces for meetings and expositions. I have taken part in the development of the building during the competition phase and worked on the final documentation. Later on I have worked on the façade exploring the various possibilities for its realization.

New Winery in Castiglione di Sicilia Project: Mario Cucinella Architects Location: Castiglione di Sicilia, Italy Year: 2013- under construction Client: SocietĂ Agricola Piano dei Daini srl Team: Mario Cucinella, Nada Balestri, Alberto Menozzi, Giuliana Maggio, Daniele Morelli, Irene Sapienza, Yuri Costantini (model) Consultancy: Greencure (landscape) Photography: Irene Sapienza

The winery is located on the northern slope of mount Etna. The building is conceived as a stone terracing structure, in complete respect of the surrounding landscape. The area is mainly used for agricultural purposes and 5 hectares are employed as vineyards. The building includes a wine fermentation cellar, a barrique cellar, several storage rooms, a welcome area for the visitors and a tasting area on the rooftop. The employed materials and techniques are local. The façade and the outdoor staircase are made of lava stone from the Etna, either finished in order to obtain dark grey battens, or used naturally. I have handled the construction phase of the building from March 2015. Activities as coordination of construction-related matters and technical solutions, product acquirement, and cooperation with external partners and consultants were particularly insightful.

Residential building via Lamarmora Project: Mario Cucinella Architects Location: Milano, Italy Year: 2015 Type: architectural competition Team: Mario Cucinella, Enrico Pintabona, Irene Sapienza, Yuri Costantini (model) With: Enrico Iascone Architetti Photography: Irene Sapienza

The site for the new residential building in via Lamarmora is a small urban void in Milano’s historical city centre. The program includes a large number of small and medium size apartments, several luxury apartments and penthouses, new offices, and various facilities for the inhabitants. The project was developed by the MCA team in collaboration with Enrico Iascone Architetti. Coordination and efficacy have been essential elements for the advancement and the realization of the work, given the large and technical demand of the contest and the delicacy of the issues related to the intervention on historical centres.

Astana Memorial Project: Mario Cucinella Architects Location: Astana, Kazakhstan Year: 2013 Type: architectural competition Team: Luca Sandri, Irene Sapienza, Giuliana Maggio; Yuri Costantini (model) Rendering: MIR, Luxigon

The city of Astana wishes to build a new memorial next to the existing memorial of commander Kabanbai Batyr. The new memorial is composed of a multitude of hollow cylinders, gathered to generate a vast central void. The majestic full-height space aims to create a pervasive sense of community and respect. This primary space leads to the side chapels, lodging monuments and the most representative artworks of the country. My personal contribution includes the participation in the development of the initial ideas, through sketches, models and technical drawings, and in the collaboration for the production of the final materials.

Halle Pajol rehabilitation Project: Jourda Architectes Paris Location: Paris, France Year: 2013 (built) Client: Ville de Paris Surface: 9000 sqm Cost: 32 100 000 euro Consultancy: C&E (BET structure), Inex (BET Fluides), In Situ (Paysagiste), AEI (économie), Acora (scénographe), ABC Décibel (acousticien) Photography: JAP archive

The project for the rehabilitation of the Halle Pajol in Paris deals with the complex theme of rehabilitation related to the industrial patrimony of the XIX century. The Halle is the protective envelope of the building, including a hostel, a library, an auditorium and an urban park. Freed from its ancient structural function, the steel external structure holds a light wooden construction and a garden. On the shed roof, photovoltaic panels supply a high percentage of the needs in electricity of the hostel. My work consisted of construction site inspections with the JAP team during the final phase of the construction and in the consequent collaboration in drafting the technical reports of the visits.

02 I COMPETITIONS Drakkar bus stops Project: SUMs Architects Location: Sandnes / Stavanger region, Norway Year: 2016 Type: public competition Client: Statens vegvesen and Rogaland Fylkeskommune Team: Giulia Pentella, Fabrizo Bonatti, Fabrizio Mezzalana, Irene Sapienza, Enrico Pintabona, Pietro Marziali, Alberto Menozzi Consultancy: Chiara Zazzini, Sebastian Werge Rendering: Alberto Menozzi

State Highways Authority and Rogaland County Council of Norway seek to develop a new network for public transports in Sandnes and Stavanger regions. The authorities trust that the new Bus road will be an exciting new element in the landscape that will create new urban spaces in diverse environments. In our proposal, the structure of the bus stop consits of equal-shaped wooden slats. A curved wooden surface is added to the main structure to shapes seats, lumbar supports and shelves and integrate the facilities of the bus stop: dustbins for sorted waste, ticket machines, speakers, electrical outlets for smartphones and tablets, interactive displays for information and advertising, glass display cases with books and snack vending machines. The glass surface protects against severe weather. The prefabricated elements can be directly assembled on site. The modulate construction system provides the stops with wide versatility: on the one hand it facilitates maintenance operations by allowing the removal and replacement of broken parts; on the other hand this lets the bus stop adapt its shape to various landscapes (city, coast, park).

Tur(i)ntogreen Project: Irene Sapienza, Gabriele Motta, Enrico Pintabona Location: Turin, Italy Year: 2013 Type: International competition - 1st place Link: http://areeweb.polito.it/eventi/ turintogreen/competition-results/

The object of the contest is the transformation of a disused industrial area into a passive, low carbon neighbourhood. The proposed project provides a sustainable, wide program that considers social engagement, urban agriculture, passive architecture and low carbon solutions. The design features and elements support the integration of built and natural environment. The architectural language refers to the industrial heritage of the area such as bridge cranes, wagons and shed roofed buildings, and reinterprets each element into board-walks, hydroponic greenhouses, gathering areas. Wagons are used to transport the local grown products in manufacturing,

stocking,

consumption

and reselling areas. Community gardens, parks, loisir and sports activities are linked with the inner cycling and pedestrian mobility network and with the external vehicular access points.

03 I ACADEMIC WORK Sustainable living Project: Irene Sapienza Location: Turin, Italy Year: 2013 Type: Final project

Sustainable living is analysed through the design of a neighbourhood and its housing units. Change is a shared responsibility, therefore planners, business, government and individuals all must play their part. The presented solution, through its specific design and the employed technologies, aims at spreading awareness in the inhabitants, encouraging and facilitating sustainable lifestyles. Practical solutions and initiatives try to make it easy for this specific community and its individuals to reduce their ecological footprints in order to live sustainably within the carrying capacity of one planet.
