Background

You are Fake News!

12 Truth Window

It was at Donald Trump’s first press conference as President-elect when the term “fake news” broke out of media discussions and into the mainstream. The fake news is interested by America, Canada, Australia and Germany. People searching for the term ‘fake news’ has increased since the November 2016 US Presidential election. Octavian famously used a campaign of disinformation to aid his victory over Marc Anthony in the final war of Roman Republic. In its aftermath, he changed his name to Augustus, and dispatched a flattering and youthful image of himself throughout the Empire, maintaining its use in his old age. Fake news also has a history in American politics. In the 1818 election, Andrew Jackson’s people started a rumor that John Quincy Adams had procured an American girl to satisfy the Jsar.

Fake News Exploration Party

An effective way of talking about my topic was with friends. I invited 12 friends to attend a Fake News Exploration Party. They provided creative and interesting perspectives which helped to promote the development of my topic. There was one idea from Thomas that the best way to spot fake news is to educate students. Yes, education could tell the students methods spotting fake news, but it was too slow. Now, what should we do to stop it? I was impressed and excited to get this idea. Thanks to my friends who provided so much useful advice on my topic. Three Insights  Some people believe that the news is true from mainstream media. Many people could figure out a news fact is false but they don’t know how to check it. 

Most people get news from social media. They think some fake news looks it like real news. 

Linlin: How are you James: How are you Linlin: First of all, thanks for accepting my interview. I’m a graphic designer, and doing my thesis that helping college students to figure out fake news. May I ask you several questions? James: Yes, I’d love to help you. Linlin: Our first question—How do you get the news? James: I get news from number of sources. I usually Online, like Google NEWS. Because that way you can looks at several different sources but I usually every three new sources biased so I look at news sources that don’t have any kind of interest in the news that they’re reporting. I’m still like BBC or British News for American News. You know good because there’s not an interest involved if it’s like middle Eastern News. I’ll try to look at other sources that are reporting is that don’t really have an interest involved because then people’s biases. Linlin: How frequently do you watch news? James: Everyday. Linlin: Me too. Because of my thesis, I always find news related my topic. Ok, which other social media platforms do you visit for news? James: Facebook. I don’t paint into a lot of news that’s on Facebook. I know stuff comes up on FB that sounds sensational. Most likely it is and then

I’ll take the extra step to go look it up. Yeah, I use snopes.com a lot they try to do fact checking. So all if I see a news story and I’m like what about that I’ll look it up and then find out it’s fake. Linlin: Do you share the news to others when you watch some interesting news? James: Yes. I do that. I kind of need to do that a little bit less because people get really even if people get offended. If it’s news that they don’t like you know and so I’ll think that are interesting but a lot it will offend somebody you know and it ends up coccyx like an argument. So I kind of I’m tending to not share as much news because it’s gonna offend somebody and then it will cause some kind of argument on Facebook. Linlin: Before sharing the news story, do you check it? James: I believe the news are true. Sometimes, I check and most time I don’t. Linlin: Which kind of fact-checker do you use? James: I look at Politifact, and snopes.com is really good. Linlin: If you find the news that it is incorrect, what will you do? James: If it’s a fairly close friends like all message him. I don’t want sometimes I’ll comment on it like hey and I’ll find this Snopes article where it says it’s fake news and put the link in there. So they see it which is kind of of rude I guess but I’m

Research 43

just trying to also like maybe make a point that they should probably check before they share stuff. Linlin: Totally Agree. Which news website do you always visit? James: I would say ap Reuters and BBC. I like reason. I’m kind of libertarian leading so I like reason as a news source. I’ll look at AL Jazeera but they have a pretty significant lien for like Middle Eastern News. They have their own priorities being like controlled partly by Qatari government so they have their own lien. They address things that a lot of that don’t pop up normally in a lot of news but you just have to realize that they have to.... Linlin: Wow. I need learn more about AL Jazeera. Do you think students should learn to spot fake news in school? James: I think it would be better as if we taught students more appropriate resources because that’s like what the big problem is there’s always gonna be big news and nothing we do is going to stop that from happening. Because a lot of times what is deemed as fake is really from the eye of reader. Because they can be skews fact that

01 Truth Window

fleen one way or another on a political spectrum. You know the US domestic political spectrum or maybe news that slightly bias an international source. A certain country’s priorities and stuff will obviously be lean one way or the other so I think it’d be better to actually teach students to look at what’s more appropriate sources. Look at AP, Look at Reuters. These are new sources that are trusted journalists and the sources that should more than clickbait. So I think we just have to teach students to be more judical and what sources they actually need to look up. I mean now it’s so easy to like quote something from Wikipedia or quote something that you see in Facebook ad or article that someone wrote online. But you just have to be more careful nowadays because there’s just so many bunk out there. I think now we really need to go back to our trusted sources that we know and have been around for a long time and our trusted sources because they’ve earned that. Linlin: So glad to talk with you. Your answers are important to improve my thesis development.
