Irina Miranda was born on the 3th of September 1987 in Oporto, Portugal. At the end of high school she decided to enter one of the most prestigious universities of architecture in Europe and was admitted at faculdade de arquitetura da universidade do porto (faup) in September 2005. Learned with two of the best architects, pritzker award laureates Siza Vieira and Souto de Moura, which provided her a sensitive way of looking and thinking architecture, a solid and quality education and a passion for drawing, between 2005 and 2009. Looking for new experiences and realities she leaves for a year of studies in paris, in 2009, at ecole nationale paris val de seine (ensapvs), france, which provided her a new way of seeing life. She is currently doing her internship at Lexarq, a portuguese atelier specialized mainly in commercial and industry spaces, which is providing her work experience and also the execution and licensing of projects.

The Biblioteca Municipal de Gaia (BMG) is located at Gaia, in an area of profound and recent urban transformation, where the industry still marks the surroundings. The library was designed respecting the terrain morphology with two intersecting axes which formed the main element - the courtyard. It was thought like a solid concrete volume in which interior the structure marks the different spaces and where there are no
physical or permanent barriers. The program was distributed in three different floors, being the kids room and cafeteria directly connected with the courtyard,on the middle floor. The reading room interacts visually with the exterior space, on an upper level, opening up to the garden and two pedestrian pathways. An entire floor was dedicated to library functions connected directly to the street facilitating this way
the functioning of the library. It was also demanded, by among others elements, that the reading room had a direct access with the book repository.

The time dedicated to the Maison Seine project was relatively short (only two weeks) especially because the main goal was to answer increasing housing needs in the city of Paris. It was given us an imaginary field at the “berges du Seine” and demanded to build a three room house with the shortest budget possible. This exercise was part of a seminar so called “architecture between orient and occident” which leads into finding a relation
between these two, so different, realities. The house is imagined as a floating space marked by two closed nucleus – the stairs which connects the three floors and the “night space”. Invoking the traditional shoji of the Japanese architecture it was used wood panels to close the different spaces when needed (three rooms, one of which on the ground floor, parking for car or bicycle, a kitchen and living room). The house turns is back to the street “parisien”
movement and opens itself into the calm river Seine, punctuated with several openings.

How can architecture represent a dialogue between east and west? The project of the cultural centre is an attempt in finding a possible relation between the different realities - in one way it represents the Japanese culture but on the other it “exists” in Paris. The form adopted follows the alignment of existing buildings and appears as a light volume contrasting the urbanized surroundings marking its presence through the void. In the interior, the cultural centre is organised across two opposite systems – a
“day zone” in which the light marks it presence trough the slab openings (where exists the art gallery, auditorium and library) and a “night zone” (working areas and research offices). The light becomes the centrepiece of the building in a fluid and continuous space. How can architecture represent a dialogue between east and west? The exercise consisted in the treatment of a city block in which was proposed the opening of a new route (which facilitates the block connectivity’s) and the creation of a new residential unit and a commercial area. Three new buildings were thought to complete and finish the surroundings in wish one stands out and marks its presence by the exception. It was conceived a modular building with repeated
residential units on the upper levels and the ground floor, related with the public space, dedicated to commerce.

In mesa workshop the main goal was to rehabilitate the river side area with a program thought exclusively for the tourism and commercial development – a river cruise terminal, an art gallery, a restaurant, an outside events area and a parking lot. The group has proposed to solve three different issues: the different existing scales in the city (specially the Alfandega building and
the historical center), the Miragaia and the river (non)relation, and finally the discontinuity of pedestrian riverside path. It was thought to construct several platforms that are developed horizontally and silently evoking the river movement. The terminal appears as a light slab of relatively low-ceilinged which helped to reduce the impact of the nearby buildings. It was also designed a new limit of
the river and created a pedestrian path close to it, linking two previous paths maintaining this way the continuity.

During ten intensive days of work it was developed a project for an archeological area – Tongobriga where the main goal was to articulate and understand the different parts of architecture, archeology and landscape. The Tongobriga area is classified as National Monument whose name is Estaçao Arqueologica de Freixo, and where was found a roman city, revealed by the ruins found in the 80’s After a short analysis the group decided to
create two new paths – an “archeological” (connecting the existing city with the ruins) and a symbolic (related with the roman grid in which the ancient city was developed), connecting the entrance, the ruins and the museum. In these two pathways it was also projected two different “moments”, one related to the entrance and the reception building and a second that articulates the existing city with the archaeological remains. As a way of stand out in relief the wall (which
also marks the city entrance) it was also thought a pedestrian path along it, using steel as material.

40-41 The proposal seeks to value and preserve the identity of the historic center of Oporto city, keeping the character and identity of the three buildings that include the unity of Souto block (inserted into an area classified as World Heritage by UNESCO). Thus, the intervention preserved the configuration of the original facades, the main element taken. After a brief analysis and
knowledge of the interior of the three buildings it was considered that the total reconstruction was necessary, if not inevitable. We then decided to unify the three volumes into one, which allowed the different interior spaces to gain a greater quality and interest – a new concrete box was created. This box is perforated by small holes which continue into the roof and form four outdoor spaces
used exclusively by the residents (a garden, a lounge area, and an area for drying clothes).

The present dissertation is a reflection on the issue of travel in the act of projecting and its important contribution to the understanding of the project and the work, of the architect and his architecture. Considering the present work also as a journey, the first chapter, “Departing”, presents the object of study, sets up the final objectives and displays the structure chosen for the development of all research. The second chapter, “Travel”, outstands a theoretical approach to the proposed topic and it establishes the basic concepts for the understanding of the work that follows. This chapter presents travel as an important tool for the formation of the architect himself, which is further supported
with case studies, and its influence upon him. It also contextualizes a trip throughout Portuguese architecture, which is also illustrated with examples. The third chapter, “About The trip of Marques da Silva,” is defined by the approach to the object of study and is divided into two parts, the first of which leads us to get to know the architect, his identity and his formative path, whose description is indispensable to the necessary understanding of the second part. This second part conveys a research and an analysis on seven of the several trips made by the architect, each one structured according to trip motivations, destination and route and log analysis, this one providing vital information to the
development of the fourth chapter. The fourth chapter, “From the trip to the project”, is also divided into two parts: the first, consisting of the analysis to the case study, the Theatre of S. João, comprises one first moment where the whole process of design and construction of the project is described, and a second moment where the possible influences gathered by the architect while travelling are identified; in the second part of this chapter, it is reinforced this process of identification of common elements observed during his trips, but applied to other case studies. The fifth and last chapter, “Arriving”, the initial objectives of the work become explicit.
