this is a public space. How can this space be reclaimed and made into something more than a delivery laneway? We thought this claim of space could take form as we become...

urban farmers.

university project.

it is yours to use.

an estimated 50% of the world’s population lives in cities and urban areas, which poses new challenges and opportunities for design thinkers. most people will be aware of our cities’ impact on the environment and know of sustainable thinking. such thinking is a step forward in design thinking, providing a means for green design and living and minimising inputs of energy, water, food and waste output. however, we can take a step further ahead, not just thinking of a sustainable city, but a regenerative urban ecopolis, a system and lifestyle which provides food and power for itself, creating a full circle of energy consumption. This is something which will require a change in lifestyle which will take a long time to come about. critical small steps are required - it is important to note that small changes do make a difference and you don’t need large spaces or time commitments to do so.

It is also a method of working towards locavore living.

Food sold in stores is for the most part grown outside the city and transported extensive distances. An urban garden means less transportation and is also a great way for you to save some moolah and to find a new hobby which is also beneficial to your health. Studies also show that 45% of revenue of money spent on locally owned businesses go back into the same community; on the whole creating a community which is more self-sustaining and independent.

knox place,

there is much potential for this space. the amount of people who pass just a few metres alongside this space on a daily basis is immense, but here the question lies... how do we, as designers, get people to claim this space?

flowers growing well with little sunlight: astilbe goats beard fox glove hardy geraniums

drip line irrigation extremely efficient water irrigation system suitable for all soil and plant types. the localised water application means a small water loss due to wind, evaporation and run off (and therefore a reduction in soil erosion), and therefore also a minimal fertiliser or nutrient loss in soil. water to the root zone means fewer weeds, fungal infections and insects. the water distribution is also controlled; the supply being regulated by valves and nozzles. it is best to have different lines for each group of plants, seeing as they all have different water requirements. the water source will mostly come from roof run-off, which will be gathered in water tanks.

make sure your garden bed is at least 18 cm deep and in a good position where your vegetables will receive six or more hours of sunlight per day. be generous - give room for all plants, otherwise they will compete for the soil and its nutrients. make sure to prepare the soil beforehand, enriching it with manure or compost.
