The Show of Shows The Paris Motor Show always has a particular flair, as might be expected in a city that prides itself on its style as much as anything else. This year, with plenty of glister and glam, there was a good buzz around the place, and plenty of new metal. While most carmakers take the view that the internal combustion engine will be with us for some considerable time to come, the interest in electric vehicles that has been a growing evidence at other recent shows was quite strong in Paris 2010. Nissan is taking the lead here with its Leaf, for which more than a hundred firm orders have been made in Ireland, with European partner Renault planning to do the same with its Fluence ZE (zero emissions). Renault highlighted a dramatic DeZir electric sports car and the Zoe battery powered city car. The partnership is working with governments and utilities in many regions to make sure that the necessary infrastructures are in place as EV ownership grows. Chickens and eggs come to mind. Electric interest from many other makers was also in considerable evidence, and if most of it was in concept form, they were pretty well all working concepts. Audi, for instance, continued its e-Tron series with a convertible sports car concept, likely to surface as a smaller sports car than the R8, with both electric and conventional powertrains available. Citroen and Peugeot both emphasised their versions of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the former's C-Zero already on sale, and Volvo had an electric C30 prototype on show while Saab offered a batter-powered 9-3 wagon. There were many other indications that carmakers are getting on the curve in this part of whatever future there is for the motor car. But there was much more than the electric buzz, as you can see in the following pages.

Top marks for totalled Giulietta It might not be the sexiest picture st start a Motor Show report with, but this was the actual car used to test the Alfa Romeo Giulietta in the Euro NCAP crash protection regime. The car scored one of the highest number of points for passenger safety.
Audis to dream on Audi has been making dream cars for many years now, and Paris 2010 was no exception. The e-Tron Spyder concept will likely turn up in an R4 sports car guise, with an e-Tron variant powered like this beauty by a plug-in diesel-electric hybrid with a 300hp twin-turbo 3.0 V6 diesel engine to drive the rear wheels and 44hp electric motors driving the front wheels. The quattro concept shown at bottom right was built to celebrate 30 years of the company's AWD system, and features a 408hp 5--cylinder engine.

Beautiful Beemers A new BMW will always get a lot of attention and the men and girls from Munich played to the gallery with this concept (right) of the next generation 6 Series Coupe. Longer, leaner and altogether more smooth looking than the current car, there were no further major details except that it is 'close to production'.
The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept shown previously at Geneva was also worth a second look. The power from a 3-cylinder diesel engine and two electric motors is likely to feature in models not far away from reality.
The new generation X3 was also strongly in evidence at the show.
Citroen on st At the ordinary family level, Citroen revealed its new C4, alongside the upscale DS4 which will offer more style based on the former's running gear. Citroen's Lacoste concept city car will slot between the C1 and C3. It is stylishly minimalist, with a high waistline, bulging wings, and golf ballstyle alloy wheels. Power is from a 3-cylinder petrol engine.

Dacia ready for market dust-up When Dacia arrives in Ireland, as promised by the brand's owner Renault, it will shake up the market considerably. Built strong, simple and cheap, there will be the Sandero for the compact hatch budget buyer, and the Duster as a funky and practical rugged family estate. Fiat showed new applications of its efficient MultiAir engines, including this Bravo below. They also had a 500 with photographs of hundreds of their customers for the car. In Abarth performance mode, a convertible version of the 500 esseesse had its top lifted, showing 160hp from its 1.4L turbo engine. 0-100 in around eight seconds. And, as always, they had some of the sexiest women at the show.

Ferrari in fine form Although the 80 copies only SA Aperta was the star of the Ferrari stand, this 485 Italia was attracting just as much attention from fans of the prancing horse brand. The company also showed off its more frugal California, using stop-start for the first time as well as other fuel saving technologies.

Ford in Focus Ford's much-awaited new Focus was the centerpiece of that brand's showing, with hatch and wagon styles and a concept ST variant that will make onto the roads at the end of next year. The C-MAX coming to Ireland shortly was also there, alongside the newly-refreshed Mondeo. A plug-in hybrid version of the C-MAX is coming next year.
Ford's Fiesta WRC contender for 2011 (left) is powered by an EcoBoost 1.6 and will be driven by Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen, along with Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila.
Hyundai targets A5 A Genesis coupe, the new ix20 small MPV and a diesel-hybrid SUV were among Hyundai's show stars. The ix20 replaces the Matrix and competes against Opel's Meriva and Renault's Modus. A diesel hybrid ix35 SUV concept with C02 of 117gk/ m was also on the stand as well as a restyled version of the i10 minicar with a new 1.0 engine that emits just 99g/km. The rear drive Genesis will target Audi A5 and BMW's 3-series coupe with engine choices of a 303hp 3.8 V6 engine or a 210hp 2.0 unit.
Jet cat! The Jaguar C-X75 is in once sense a celebration of 75 years of Jaguar cars. But its powertrain is unique because it uses gas turbines in an automotive extended-range EV context. A plug-in electric car in the first instance, the quite gorgeous concept has four 195hp electric motors, one at each
wheel, and the onboard battery can power the car for 110km/h on a charge. On longer journeys, two micro gas turbines with a 188hp output capability can either recharge the batteries to extend the range to 900km, or directly supplement the electric motors. The powertrain can pull an awesome 1600Nm of torque.
Honda hybrids Jazz Honda's hybrid Jazz is a first for the supermini segment. And it is done without trading any of the Tardis-like interior space.

If you believe that Kia from Korea is still in the cheap and cheerful business, take a close look at the Optima given star billing at Paris. This one is coming to Ireland next year, and it won't be a competitor for the new VW Passat or the facelifted Ford Mondeo. Try the Audi A6. Or even its more embedded prestige rivals. Dare we say Mercedes-Benz? At the other end of the stand, the one which raised eyebrows, and smiles, was the three metres long POP electric city car concept. The company says coyly that POP doesn't indicate any next generation of Kia style, but 'looks even further into the future'. The designers call the car a 'wild atom', bouncing around the autosphere to see what it might provoke in reaction. They used nonautomotive elements in putting the shape together, including gliders and high-speed bicycles. The view for the passengers is likened to what they might get from a helicopter. POP is mainly a packaging exercise, but Kia suggests a 68hp electric motor and lithium battery powertrain. But, hey, it will probably have warp capability by the time any production variant gets on our roads. That's how fast things are moving.
Evoque shows off The Range Rover Evoque, the neweest and smallest Land Rover product, was the star of the brand's stand. We had seen the exterior before, but now got a chance to try the interior design for the first time. Lexus launches 2
Lexus used Paris to launch the CT 200h, the world's first compact premium full hybrid, aimed at younger drivers. Power is from a 1.6 engine combined with an electric motor and deliveries start in October. Meanwhile, the LFA supercar, which has been in development since 2005, is a carbon-fibre model with power from a 4.8 V10 engine offering 560hp and a 3.7 seconds sprint to 100km/h.

Mazda fettles 2 and adds 5 Mazda showed a face-lifted Mazda2 with upgraded upgraded engines and chassis and automatic transmission for the first time. A new generation Mazda5 which will come to Ireland soon was also given plenty of space. The Shinari concept highlighted a new design theme.
Hairy WRC Mini Mini launched a WRC concept based on the stretched Mini Countryman platform, a real race car which will take part in some segments of the World Rally Championship events next year, pending a full program in 2012. The Prodrive-prepared car is a direct fuel-injection 1.6 Garrett turbocharged engine from BMW Motorsport, along with an Xtrac 6-speed sequential gearbox. No power output is given.
Nissan in TownPod
CLS stars Mercedes-Benz showed its new CLS coupe and an electric version of the A-class. The CLS arrives here early next year. It is based on the E Class but is longer.
Nissan is taking still the electric lead here with its Leaf, for which more than a hundred firm orders have been made in Ireland, and it was well shown. There was also a new concept city car EV, the TownPod, which is something of a friendlier but similar shape to its Cube. It is said by the company to be a view of future city cars and features a 'disappearing' rear seat allowing space for luggage if necessary when being used only by one or two. There was also a lot of interest in the final version of the new generation Micra, due in Ireland before the end of the year. For this they have gone back to a more restrained, even retro design. 12
GTC concept scores high for Opel
Opel debuted its Astra GTC concept and the new Astra Sports Tourer. The GTC is muscular in style and the showcar is powered by a 290hp 2.0 turbo petrol engine. The company describes the theme as 'sculpture in motion' and the car will highlight the future, and bolder, shape of Opel cars. Although wagons aren't so popular in Ireland, we think the Sports Tourer version of the Opel Astra is something really nice.

Peugeot style and technology Peugeot concentrated on its new 508, a high-quality and roomy replacement for the 407, which is more restrained in style but has its own elegance. The 3008h diesel hybrid is a world first and showcases a technology that will spread rapidly through the Peugeot and Citroen models range. The HR1 Hybrid4 sports a new Peugeot 1.2 petrol 110hp engine in the front and a 37hp electric motor in the rear. Together the two engines give a combined power of 147hp, combined fuel consumption of 3.5L/100km and emissions of 80g/km CO2.
Renault sets Latitude Renault offered a new large car, the Latitude, which shows that the over-thetop styling days are at least temporarily gone in that company, following the disaster of the Vel Satis. A refreshed Laguna also appeared. On the EV front, where Renault is working to be European carmaker leader,
it showed the production Fluence ZE which will be in Ireland next year, and also the concept Zoe city EV that is production ready. The DeZir concept sports car EV again caught much attention.

Sporty SEAT IBe concept The first version of the SEAT IBe was presented in Geneva earlier this year and its design, technology and interior have been further developed. The little sports car is low and wide, with powerful proportions and a concentrated gaze delivered by the sharp lines of its LED headlamps. The all-electric drive outputs 102hp and the car is low in weight thanks to mixed-material construction.
Busy stand at Toyota
Toyota's Verso-S will be the shortest MPV on sale in Europe when it launches early next year being less than 4 metres long. It will compete with the Opel Meriva, Citroen C3 Picasso and Renault Modus. The brand also debuted the FT-CH concept, their first full hybrid for the subcompact segment.
The FT-EVIIconcept isa cheerful thought on a clean and quiet city car, and the FT-86 sports car concept once again hit the button with many who want Toyota to get back into the sports car business sooner rather than later.

Passat is VW's mains launch Volkswagen's main consumer interest was the new Passat, a more squarejawed design than the current car. Technology options now include sign recognition, blind spot detection and adaptive cruise control. In all there will be ten engines offering 105-300hp, some of them up to 10 percent more efficient than equivalents in the current car, The 105hp 1.6 diesel consumes 4.2 l/100 km, equivalent to 109 g/km CO2, while technologies such as the Stop/Start system contribute to greater fuel efficiency in the petrolpowered versions such as the 122hp 1.4 TSI which, with 5.8 l/100 km has emissions of 138 g/km. The new Passat will be available in initial European markets from midNovember.
Volvo electrifies with C30 EV Volvo plans to introduce a fully electric version of its C30 hatchback next year, starting in Europe and then extending sales to markets in China, Japan, North America, and eventually Australia. An evaluation fleet of about 250 electric C30s will be trialled in real world driving before full production starts in 2011. The Volvo electric car is fully equipped with the latest Volvo safety systems. Like all pure EVs, it has a range of about 160km between recharges. The electric car business is hotting up, with Nissan, Renault, Mitsubishi, Peugeot-Citroen having cars ready in place, and Ford and others not far behind. And extended range EVs are also rolling out, including the Chevy Volt and Opel Ampera.
