Did you know that the average American home uses an average of $2000 in electricity a year? That is just electricity not counting any type of heating fuel. The sad part about this amount is a lot of this money could be saved by simple things that everyone can do. Many people think that their electric bill is something they can do nothing about. They are frustrated and concerned over the amount, but what is a person to do? Well, you can do plenty. You don't have to fight the power company, just fight the energy wasters in your own home. Little simple steps can go a long way to cutting your power costs. Unplug where you can! A lot of electronics continue to use electricity even when they aren't in use. Cell phone chargers, computers, etc. drain little bits of energy when they are plugged in but not in use. Many people leave their cell phone chargers plugged in even when they aren't using them to charge the phone. Unplug the charger and shave a little off your electricity bill. If you aren't watching it, turn it off! Do you find yourself turning on the television when you are home just for background noise? Many do this, but it can be quite a power hog. If you aren't watching something, turn it off. It may take some time to adjust to the lack of background noise, but you will soon find that silence can be quite peaceful and nice. Plus the energy savings is worth every penny of that silence! If you need to buy a new appliance, make sure it is an energy efficient model. Look for the Energy Star symbol so you know you are getting an appliance that can help cut your electricity costs. This is especially true for washers and dryers. The dryer alone accounts for 12% off the total energy costs of a home. You can cut these costs by purchasing a dryer that has a moisture sensor. This type of dryer will turn off when the clothes are dry not when the timer runs out. This feature alone will go a long way to cutting your energy savings! In addition to buying energy efficient appliances, think about the time of day that you use your appliances. To cut costs use high energy using appliances on off hours. In other words, do laundry and run the dishwasher in the evening or early morning. This tip may not apply in your area, but some places to offer lower rates on off hours. Another option is to hang your laundry to dry. Clothes that are dried outside smell so fresh and wonderful. If you can't dry outside, at least hang a good portion of your clothes up on hangers to dry. This will dramatically cut back on the time that you use your dryer. Everyone can do simple things to cut back on their energy usage. Cutting back on your usage will also help you reduce your electricity bill. After all, everyone loves to save money!
