If you've read the previous article called "Take The DeClutter Challenge", you'll already know the basics of how the 30 Day DeCluttering Challenge works. If not, here it is again, in a nutshell. You commit yourself to decluttering one area of your home, be it large or small, for 30 days straight. Read on to learn more about the 30 Day DeCluttering Challenge! Why would a DeCluttering Challenge like the 30 Day DeCluttering Challenge work? The truth is that any time you commit yourself to sticking to a specific plan you are guaranteed to accomplish more than if you had no plan at all, and simply attacked at will whenever you felt like it. Trust me, you RARELY feel like decluttering... your cluttered and disorganized home is evidence of this! If you challenge yourself, or have someone challenge you to do something, then your competitive nature will rise and help you meet the challenge head on! And you will see then results! The 30 Day DeCluttering Challenge is a relatively easy one to set up. All you need is a calendar with lots of write-able space, time to dedicate each day or evening to decluttering (even 5-10 minutes), and a will to succeed! Begin by grabbing a pencil and your calendar and wander around your house. What do you see?
You enter the front door and see a pile of old newspapers, flyers, and magazines. "Day One: Sort through pile of papers by front entrance and recycle or file as needed." You look to the left of the pile and see a huge pile of shoes, purses, gloves, umbrellas, you name it in your entry way. " Day Two: Organize front entry way - store shoes that aren't used on a regular basis, put away out-of-season accessories." You enter the living room and see the cluttered book shelves. "Day Three: Re-shelf all books. If not enough room for them all, create room by donating/recycling unliked or broken books." You see the TV corner and the pile of DVD open and empty DVD cases: "Day Four: Locate missing DVDs and re-shelf/re-stack the cases."
Do you see how this works? Continue throughout your house and make an action plan for the whole month. Then, each day at a designated time follow through with your planned activities. If you make the assignments seriously and realistically do-able, you will succeed! Here are a few helpful suggestions to keep you "on track":
Get your significant other or your children to commit to the plan together by making it a Family DeCluttering Challenge and you'll be able to help each other stay on track! Promise yourself or your family a nice reward if you complete the challenge successfully!
Blog about it... make it a public challenge so there is some accountability! Give yourself an occasional "day off" or "catch up day" in the schedule to allow yourself time to get yourself back on schedule if needed. Mix in "fun" (or more interesting) tasks with the "ugly" ones. Fill the entire month with decluttering challenges from one room only, if need be! That room will be beautiful once finished!
The 30 Day DeCluttering Challenge is one excellent way to get your cluttered house on the road to recovery. Stop sighing and groaning about your cluttered house and take action! The task is only overwhelming if you don't break it down in to manageable chunks!
