Dublin Theatre Festival 2018 is a celebration of contemporary theatre that includes brand new work, fresh versions of canonical plays and adventurous international productions. It’s a programme that rides the performance spectrum to take in experimental theatre, new writing, classic drama, opera, dance and installation. Our programme will entertain, challenge and stimulate conversation. I hope it will also bind us closer together.

This festival is our contribution to the culture of Dublin. What’s great about theatre is that it is such a sociable art form and the more sociable we are, I believe, the more successful our city will be. I love that theatre happens in public: we have to leave our homes and be with other people in an act of civic and cultural participation. Taken together, the small but significant moments of connectivity that the festival offers can build stronger communities.

At the same time, the shape of Dublin is changing. Many of the places where we used to play are gone, with more to be torn down soon. A wish for the future is that Dublin will have spaces for culture appropriate to this city’s ambition and potential, so that its citizens can continue to flourish.

Our theatre-makers are proficient in wit and imagination. They have an extraordinary aptitude for stories as well as a restless scepticism for dominant narratives and received wisdom. These artists are creating work in a world where individuals, communities and the very environment are in real danger. Their response is to affirm a desire for human connection and the radical possibilities of imagination directed against approaching darkness.

We salute all the artists in the programme the funders, sponsors and stakeholders who have supported and encouraged us along the way, and our colleagues and partners who are making this year’s festival happen. In particular, thanks to our principal public funder, the Arts Council, whose support is the foundation on which all of this is built and whom we repay by being ever more ambitious in the range of work we present and the audiences we reach. If love is there – it has turned them blind. I’ve been quietly obsessed by the Bluebeard story (in all its variations) since I read it in fable form as a child. Over the years (and most recently) its horror has amplified, largely because of Béla Balázs and Béla Bartók’s opera version Bluebeard’s Castle. In their adaptation a young woman, Judith, elopes with the powerful but monstrous Bluebeard. Over the course of an evening he takes her through his castle and shows her the brutality he has enacted on the world. The house is a gruesome gallery of all his sins, the home of an oppressor whose rooms are full of blood and the blood money he has stolen. Judith has knowledge of the sort of man he is and yet feels certain that she is the one who can change him. But this is not simply a story of a deluded innocent who has convinced herself that she will be this monster’s saviour – though that is always a great story. For me (and this may all have changed in rehearsal*), the two of them are testing their love for each other and how strong and deep that love is.
04-05
Love has intoxicated both of them. Judith arrives into his house emboldened by it, drunk on her devotion for Bluebeard and what their union will make. For him their love has allowed him to forget who he is and what he has done. And so on the front steps it is this absolute but untested love that stares into the terrifying darkness of his house. At what point does Judith realise that love will not be enough for her to survive? And when does Bluebeard understand that yet again his past and this house need their villain? In the storm of Bartók’s extraordinary music we’re brought into this pitch-dark tragedy. Both of them are taken by the house and lost in the sins that Bluebeard has perpetrated. And yet, he is at home here. He is at peace with the atrocities he has inflicted on the world. At its final moments we are left with more questions. Have we been simply fooled by Bluebeard all this time? Was there ever a love for him other than the devotion he has for his own power? And with her love demolished – her light extinguished – how will Judith survive him and the castle? Enda Walsh

Founded in 2018, Irish National Opera champions Irish creativity in its casting, its choice of creative teams and in its commitment to the presentation of new operas. INO produces opera in the country’s larger theatres and also tours productions the length and breadth of Ireland. In its first year, INO performed in 13 Irish venues and will expand in subsequent years. INO’s repertoire includes well-loved operatic titles alongside less familiar works. Many productions are performed in partnership with the RTÉ Orchestras. Through collaboration with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Irish Baroque Orchestra and Crash Ensemble, INO delivers high quality productions of a broad repertoire from the Eighteenth century to the present day. INO’s commitment to new work saw the company bring the FEDORA – GENERALI Prize-winning co-production with Landmark Productions Donnacha Dennehy and Enda Walsh’s The Second Violinist to the Barbican Theatre in London in the company’s inaugural year. The INO Opera Studio is an annual programme providing a platform for emerging opera artists from several disciplines. INO reaches and engages the widest possible audience through outreach initiatives and by broadcasting and streaming its productions on a variety of platforms.

Introducing orchestral music to new audiences since 1948, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra has built a strong connection with the public that saw it named the World’s Favourite Orchestra 2015, winning 25 per cent of the vote in an international poll. The orchestra is committed to an eclectic range of programming across various genres, meaning that no two RTÉ CO audiences are ever the same. It is as likely to be found presenting the world premiere of Mise Éire with live performance of Ó Riada’s score in the presence of President Michael D. Higgins (2016) as performing live at Electric Picnic with RTÉ 2fm’s Jenny Greene (2017) or recording a one-off TV special with Niall Horan (2018).
