Description West Cork. November 1920. The Irish War of Independence rages. The body of a young woman is found brutally murdered on a windswept hillside, a scrapboard sign covering her mutilated body reads ‘TRATOR’. Acting Sergeant Séan O’Keefe of the Royal Irish Constabulary is assigned to investigate the crime, aided by sinister detectives sent from Dublin Castle to ensure he finds the killer, just so long as the killer he finds best serves the purposes of the crown in Ireland... The IRA has instigated its own investigation into the young woman’s death, assigning young Volunteer Liam Farrell to the task of finding a killer it cannot allow to be one of its own. Unknown to each other, the RIC Constable and the IRA Volunteer relentlessly pursue the truth behind the savage killing, their investigations taking them from the bullet-pocked lanes and thriving brothels of a war-torn Cork city to the rugged, deadly hills of West Cork, both seeking a killer, both seeking to stay alive in a time where ‘murder’s as common as rain and no one knows a thing about it, even when they do.’

Author Information Kevin McCarthy was born in Suffolk and served in the RAF before studying at Boston College and University College Dublin. In 2005 he was awarded the Fingal County Council Arts Bursary for Fiction Writing. He lives in North County Dublin with his wife and two children.

RIGHTS INFORMATION The Valley of the Squinting Windows Brinsley MacNamara ISBN: 978 094796 201 2 Format: Paperback Size: 215mm x 135mm Extent: 224pp Category: Literature Rights Available: All

Key Note The tragic interweaving of three lives, MacNamara’s powerful study of a rural community established him as one of the great Irish novelists.

Selling Points • Classic Irish literature • Well drawn, complex characters

4

Description This is a story of rural life, the power of gossip, public perception which people attempted to present of the family and individual, and of an inward-looking society, similar to the ‘Keeping up with the Joneses ‘ theme. The novel so enraged the author’s Westmeath rural Irish neighbors that the book was publicly burned, its author humiliated, and his father, a local schoolteacher, driven into exile. It also resulted in a high-profile court case by those who thought that they had been described. Hostility against the book led to its burning. ‘Valley of the squinting windows’ has become a colloquial term, particularly in Ireland, for a society obsessed with providing neighbours and peers with a good perception of one’s personal matters.

Author Information Brinsley MacNamara, whose real name was John Weldon, was born near Devlin, Co Westmeath, in 1890. He joined the Abbey Theatre Company in 1909 and toured with it in the United States. In 1912 he decided to devote his time to writing and ‘The Valley of the Squinting Windows’, published in 1918, established him as a leading Irish writer, though it raised a storm of violent protest. He went on to write six novels, two books of short stories and many plays for the Abbey of which he was for a time a director. He died in February 1963.

Key Note A national and international prize-winning collection of short stories from an author based in West Cork.

Selling Points * Author has won multiple literary prizes * Resurgence of interest in the short story genre * A beautiful gentle collection of stories about family relationships

5

Description Does a child come wailing into this world with the patterns that define it already beating in the blood? Do daughters ever believe that mother knows best and can a father come to respect the skills of a son? This collection of stories explores the ties that bind the generations together. It dips into the quiet beauty and the horrors of keeping those bonds intact. There’s lust and loyalty, joy and exploitation, innocence and trust, but deep in the heart of each story — from daughter to father perhaps, or mother to son — there is always the spark of love.

Author Information Joyce Russell grew up in the Yorkshire Dales and in 1978 moved to Bantry in west Cork to live the self-sufficiency dream. She has won or been shortlisted on multiple occasions for the Sean O’Faolain Short Story Award, The Real Writers International Award, the START Chapbook prize, the Bridport Prize, the RTE Francis MacManus Short Story Competition and the FISH Short Story Competition. She is a founder member of Friends of the Earth Ireland and is co-author with her husband, Ben, of ‘The Polytunnel Book’.

* ‘Hilariously Irish, shrewdly accurate and richly creative.’ ‘Irish Times’ * Beloved Irish author in a strong nostalgia market

Description All human life is here, and Keane tells its story in an astonishing procession of remarkable characters and in rare humorous glimpses of his own career. There are more shades to John B. Keane’s humour than there are colours in the rainbow. Compassion, shrewdness and a glorious sense of fun and roguery are evident in this collection, which brings together John B. Keane’s tales. A fitting tribute to John B. Keane, for decades Ireland’s favourite storyteller, this winning short story collection typifies the late author’s folkloric imagination and storytelling arts.

Author Information John B. Keane, one of Ireland’s most prolific and respected literary figures, died on 30 May 2002 at the age of 73, after a long and difficult battle with cancer. He was born in Listowel, County Kerry, and it was here that he spent his literary career, running a pub which provided him with inspiration for his characters and ideas. RIGHTS INFORMATION Watering the Desert with Tony De Mello John Callanan ISBN: 978 1 85635 444 8 Format: Paperback Size: B format Extent: 160pp Category: Mind, Body, Spirit Rights Available: All

Key Note A book of Meditation Exercises celebrating the spirit and enthusiasm of a great Indian Master of Prayer, Anthony de Mello.

Description ‘New Zealand probably has more resident birds that can’t fly than any other place on earth. I’m told that long ago these birds could fly but life was so good in their land and enemies so few that they saw no reason to exercise and develop their God-given talent, and thus they let these attributes fall into disuse. If you don’t use the talent, you lose the talent, and that’s exactly what happened. ’We don’t want to be like the Kiwi bird. Faith may have been handed on to us, but if we let it lie dormant, it will surely wither. The philosophy of life and prayer practices offered in this book capture some of Anthony de Mello’s unique holistic approach to spirituality. Wherever he went, de Mello touched the minds, hearts and spirit of his listeners.’ This book hopes to continue his work. It blends the rich insights of eastern and western spirituality, thus encouraging Christians to keep going in their search for truth and vibrancy.

Author Information John Callanan, SJ, is a priest and Irish Jesuit who is currently chaplain and student adviser at University College Dublin. He has conducted retreats and prayer workshops in Ireland, France, the British Isles, the USA and Africa and is the author of a trilogy of books: The Spirit of Tony de Mello, Dreaming with Tony de Mello and Finding Fire with Tony de Mello.

RIGHTS INFORMATION Depression An Emotion Not A Disease Áine Tubridy and Michael Corry ISBN: 978 1 85635 479 0 Format: Paperback Size: 198mm x 129mm Extent: 296 pp Category: Self-help Rights Available: All

Key Note Depression is NOT a disease, it is an emotion triggered by traumatic events whose hazardous treatment with drugs by doctors worldwide is only a band-aid, not a cure — Tubridy and Corry

Selling Points • Depression has become an urgent health issue in Ireland. Last year one in five of the population was prescribed antidepressants at a cost of 100 million euro. • ‘Depression: An Emotion not a Disease’ takes on the medical community’s ‘hazardous’ use of medication in treating depression, calling for a re-examination of the scientific assumptions associated with it. • It is written by psychiatrists who see the full spectrum of depression, right up to suicidal intent, and see the inadequacy of medication and the biomedical model.

Description Depression is an emotion, just like fear, anger or love. It is the imprint felt after a stressful or traumatic experience. Depression is natural. It is not a disease process reflecting a change in brain chemistry. The sick brain model of depression is a hideous and terrifying concept, as it turns us into cogs in a machine where, if we find the going difficult and want to disengage, we are prescribed an emotional painkiller and advised to carry on regardless. Chemically-induced slavery has arrived. This book offers hope and understanding, and effective ways to create a new identity.

Author Information Dr Aine Tubridy qualified in medicine from UCD in 1977. After working for a time in general practice, she trained as a constructivist psychotherapist and joined the Institute of Psychosocial Medicine in 1990. She has co-authored a book, Going Mad?, on the origins of mental illness. Dr Michael Corry qualified in medicine from UCD in 1973 and also trained as a constructivist psycho¬therapist. His interest in psychosis and altered states of consciousness developed from his work in St Brendan’s Psychiatric Hospital, Dublin. In 1987 he was appointed consultant psychiatrist to Clane General Hospital.

29

Description We all know what we should be eating and diet gurus abound, yet 66% of the population are still overweight. Why? Because most of us find it so damn difficult to get ‘in the zone’ long enough to stick to a new eating plan that we really couldn’t be bothered. Now two stone lighter, Susannah shares her secrets about how to get your brain to work with and not against you in weight loss, using research from neuroscience and cognitive and behavioural psychology. Susannah shares her kickstart eating plan that will get you motivated – and provide results. This book is not a life-long eating plan, but it will kick-start your weight loss, give you the motivation to keep going and stop all the rubbish clichés about ‘completely new you’ that are sabotaging your weight-loss goals.

Description Let love and friendship reign! – a worthy wish and the motto of the famous Claddagh ring. The earliest examples that can be dated are thought to be from about 1700 but it is known that the rings were popular much earlier than this. RIGHTS INFORMATION Irish Ghost Stories Patrick Byrne ISBN: 978 1 85635 285 7 Format: Paperback Size: 198mm x 129mm Extent: §44pp Category: Folklore & Tradition Rights Available: All except Czech language

Keynote ‘Irish Ghost Stories’ contains stories that tell of spooky goings-on in almost every part of the country.

Description There is a strong and ancient tradition of ghostly appearances in Ireland. The country is full of old castles with secret rooms, and while some of the stories are obvious figments of lively imaginations, there are other tales that cannot easily be explained away. Of the many bizarre occurrences related in this collection, perhaps the strangest is the case of the Gormanstown Foxes: on the death of a Viscount Gormanstown, groups of foxes would gather around the castle and sit there untouched by hounds until the funeral rites were over. ‘Irish Ghost Stories’ contains stories that tell of spooky goings-on in almost every part of the country. They include the tales of the Wizard Earl of Kildare, the Scanlan Lights of Limerick, Buttoncap of Antrim, Maynooth College’s haunted room, Loftus Hall in Wexford, and an account of how the poet Francis Ledwidge appeared to an old friend in County Meath.

Author Patrick Byrne was a fifth-generation Dubliner who was active in journalism and writing for many decades. His other books include ‘The Irish Ghost Stories of Sheridan Le Fanu’ (Mercier Press). He died in 1999.

Description Did you ever think there was something funny about Irish history? Turns out you were right. As the centenary of 1916 approaches, ‘The True(ish) History of Ireland’ reveals the funny side of Ireland’s story. Using hearsay, rumour and some brilliant cartoons, writer Garvan Grant and cartoonist Gerard Crowley have created an (almost) factual look at the birth, childhood and adolescence of the nearly mature nation. Get to the very heart of what it means to be a True Gael by taking a look at the accidental invention of poitín by St Patrick, the conquest of the country by some evil, yet rather posh English people and the discovery of the legendary Everlasting Pint in a cave in east Galway.

Author Information Garvan Grant is a writer, editor, historian and award-winning short story writer. He worked for ‘The Sunday Business Post’ from 1999 to 2013 and is now working as a freelance editor and writer. Gerard Crowley is one of Ireland’s best-loved cartoonists. His comic strip, ‘The Last Resort’, has been appearing in ‘The Sunday Business Post’ for the past 20 years and his work regularly appears in ‘The Irish Farmers’ Journal’. His work has also appeared in the ‘Irish Medical Times’, the ‘Irish Independent’, the ‘Herald’ and the ‘Irish Daily Star’.

Description Early on the morning of 30 May 1847, the Ajax weighed anchor in Dublin harbour with the passengers facing a six-week crossing of the North Atlantic to what they hoped would be a land of promise somewhere in Canada. Within a year after landing in Canada one of the passengers of the Ajax published a diary that gives remarkable details about the voyage from Dublin to Grosse Île, the Canadian quarantine station. The passenger signed his name as Robert Whyte. Whyte was a protestant gentleman of good education and position as well as being a professional writer who intended to publish his diary. The diary appeared in print in 1848. It is signed in the author’s own handwriting and features vivid descriptions of the spectacular scenery along the St Laurence River and striking delineations of the passengers, including the captain and his wife, the crew and the suffering travellers. Vessels constituting what has aptly been called the coffin fleet transported over 100,000 immigrants in panic flight from famine, fever and conditions involving deprivation of all human rights. Greedy captains and shipping agents were responsible for the crowding which resulted in much suffering and enormous loss of life on the ocean.

Selling Points • • • •

A gripping story of a tragedy at sea during the Great Irish Famine Resurgent interest in the Famine as evidenced by recent TV programmes Successful and dynamic author of several recent history titles Coincides with commemorations in Galway and Boston of the sinking of the St John and the tragic loss of life

Description The famine drove huge numbers of Irish men and women to leave the island and pursue their survival in foreign lands. In 1847, some 200,000 people sailed for Boston alone. Of this massive group, 2,000 never made it to their destination, killed by disease and hunger during the voyages, their remains consigned to a watery grave. The sinking of the brig St John off the coast of Massachusetts in October 1849, was only one of many tragic events to occur during this mass exodus. The ship had sailed from Galway, loaded with passengers so desperate to escape the effects of famine that some had walked from as far afield as Clare to reach the ship. The passengers on the St John made it to within sight of the New World before their ship went down and they were abandoned by their captain, who denied that there had been any survivors when he and some of his crew made it ashore. For those who died in the seas off Massachusetts, there was nothing to mark a last resting place; no name, no memory of them ever having existed, just another statistic in a terrible tragedy.

Author Information William Henry is an historian and archaeologist from Galway city. The author of numerous books, including the acclaimed and successful ‘Galway and the Great War’, ‘Forgotten Heroes’ and ‘Supreme Sacrifice: The Story of Eamonn Ceannt’. He published his first book for children: ‘Tír na nÓg: A New Adventure’ in 2008.

* A collection of evocative photographs from Ireland’s revolutionary period * Many of these photographs have never been seen before * Great value Christmas gift title, high quality production * Interest in this period has not waned and increases as the ‘Decade of Centenaries’ goes on

Description The period from 1913 to 1923 in Ireland’s history of rebellion, is undoubtedly the most significant. The period takes in the revival of interest in all things Irish around 1913, the heroic Easter Rising of 1916, the bloody War of Independence 1919–1921 and the bitter Civil War of 1922–1923. Here for the first time, are images of those episodes, the people, the places, city and country, with insightful commentary describing the context of each photograph. This book gives the reader glimpses of what happened and what life was like during the Irish revolution through photographs of the time. Photographs played an increasingly important role as the Irish struggle for independence took hold, first as memorabilia after the Easter Rising, later as propaganda and were also of vital importance in ‘the intelligence war’ fought between the IRA and the British. Includes previously unpublished photos sourced from private collections, the Irish Military Archives, Kilmainham Gaol and a variety of British military museums.

Author Information Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc is originally from Co. Clare. His first book was ‘Blood On The Banner: The Republican Struggle in Clare 1913– 1923’ and he has contributed to Mercier’s Military History of the Irish Civil War series with ‘The Battle for Limerick City’.

Selling Points * Plenty of thought-provoking stories with mass appeal offering a new angle on the Rising for the centenary * Author is well known in Irish history circles * Attractive full-colour gift book should appeal to tourists and locals alike

Description In this book John Gibney tells the story of the Rising and its aftermath through 50 objects that survive from that time. Some of these are what you might expect – documents, uniforms, weapons and flags – but others are quirkier objects, like the cricket bat that died for Ireland, Sean Mac Diarmada’s hurley, the teacups the Pearse brothers used for their last cup of tea with their family, Thomas Kent’s rosary beads and Kathleen Lynn’s prison biscuits. This fresh perspective makes for a very readable book that will appeal to the lay person interested in history, but also provide plenty of new information for the enthusiast.

Author Information John Gibney holds a doctorate in History from TCD and has been a research fellow at the University of Notre Dame in the USA and at NUI Galway. He has written several books on Irish history and produced an acclaimed radio documentary on the folklore of inner-city Dublin.

RIGHTS INFORMATION One Day in My Life Bobby Sands ISBN: 978 1 85635 349 6 Format: Paperback Size: 198mm x 129mm Extent: 118pp Category: History Rights Available: All Illustrations: B&W images throughout

Key Note A tale of human bravery, endurance and courage from hunger striker, Bobby Sands.

Description Bobby Sands was twenty-seven years old and had been on hunger strike for sixty-six days when he died on 5 May 1981. The young IRA volunteer was world-famous by the time of his death, having spent the last nine years of his short life in prison and been elected, while still a prisoner, to the British parliament. The hunger strike was aimed at rebutting the British government’s attempts to criminalise the struggle for Irish freedom by changing Sands’ and his fellow cellmates’ status from political to criminal. While behind bars, Sands secretly wrote on toilet paper and cigarette papers with the refill of a cheap pen that he kept hidden inside his body. These writings were then smuggled out of the prison. With dry humour, they chart a man’s attempt to preserve his identity against appalling beatings, unimaginable filth, freezing cold and numbing boredom. In poetry and prose, he vividly evokes the enclosed hell of Long Kesh, the harassment and the humiliatingly invasive searches.

Author Information Bobby Sands was an Irish volunteer of the Provisional Irish Republican Army and member of the United Kingdom Parliament who died on hunger strike while in HM Prison Maze. He was the leader of the 1981 hunger strike in which Irish republican prisoners protested against the removal of Special Category Status. During his strike he was elected as a member of the United Kingdom Parliament as an Anti H-Block/Armagh Political Prisoner candidate. His death resulted in a new surge of IRA recruitment and activity. International media coverage brought attention to the hunger strikers, and the Republican movement in general, attracting both praise and criticism.

RIGHTS INFORMATION Lethal Allies British Collusion in Ireland Anne Cadwallader ISBN: 978 1 78117 188 2 Format: Paperback Size: 215mm x 135mm Extent: 416pp Category: History Rights Available: All

Key Note Incontrovertible evidence of collusion between loyalist paramilitaries and the state in dozens of murders in Northern Ireland.

Description Farmers, shopkeepers, publicans and businessmen were slaughtered in a bloody decade of bombings and shootings in the counties of Tyrone and Armagh in the 1970s. Four families each lost three relatives; in other cases, children were left orphaned after both parents were murdered. For years there were claims that loyalists were helped and guided by members of the RUC and Ulster Defence Regiment. But, until now, there was no proof. Drawing on 15 years of research, and using forensic and ballistic information never before published, this book includes official documents showing that the highest in the land knew of the collusion and names those whose fingers were on the trigger and who detonated the bombs. It draws on previously unpublished reports written by the PSNI’s own Historical Enquiries Team. It also includes heartbreaking interviews with the bereaved families whose lives were shattered by this cold and calculated campaign.

Author Information Anne Cadwallader is an experienced journalist, originally from London. She has worked for the BBC, RTÉ, The Irish Press, Independent Network News and Reuters, spending a large part of her time reporting from Northern Ireland. She is the author of ‘Holy Cross – The Untold Story’ (Brehon Press, 2004). In 2009 she gave up journalism to work for The Pat Finucane Centre for Human Rights in Armagh as an investigator and case worker.
