DIARY DIARY

Winter 2020

Welcome When I penned the last welcome letter, I was hoping that the impact on weddings from the Coronavirus would be short-lived. Unfortunately, even my worst fears were surpassed by the chaos and confusion that has effected all the bride and grooms-to-be who had planned a summer 2020 wedding. If you are one of those, I’d like to take this opportunity to sympathise with your plight. What was supposed to be your big day, an event you had planned over the last couple of years, has suddenly been snatched away from you. Although, it has only been postponed, it will still feel like a loss to you, and you are bound to be feeling deflated, disappointed and even a little bit mad at the world that has thrown up this pandemic. On the bright side, remember that your rearranged wedding, whenever that will be, will still be the best day of your life. Realistically, we don’t think the weddings will be in full flow again until 2021 at the earliest, and what the traditional Irish wedding will look like in the near future is uncertain. To help shed some light on the situation, we’ve spoken with some of the top wedding suppliers to get their assessment of the current situation and how they think things will be going forward. Whatever the future of weddings is going to look like, some things remain a priority and Wedding Dresses are always top of the list for girls planning their wedding and we’ve got quite the selection. We’ve taken some dresses from top Irish bridal boutiques, and photographed them in a number of wonderful wedding venues. We travelled to the beautiful Ballykealey House in Carlow, across to the historic Abbey Hotel in Roscommon, and down to Dungarvan in the sunny south-east to a wonderful 360 Cookhouse Restaurant to showcase some wonderful wedding gowns in these very different but beautiful wedding venues. You’ll also find all the wedding suppliers you need for your dream dress, stunning venues, awardwinning photography, beauty tips for the big day, bands to set the tune. We have a gift section with some lovely items that you can put on your gift registry list – or just go out and buy them yourself as a special treat.

A honeymoon is the one part of the wedding that is truly only about the couple. With this in mind, we’ve put together a great selection of honeymoon ideas for you to dream about. There’s a big world out there and we’ve got some great ideas, both near and far. If you’re planning a wedding abroad, you’ll also find plenty of ideas inside. We all love looking at other people’s weddings, and we have a bumper selection of real weddings for you. In this issue, we have included six real-life weddings, with brides and grooms telling us their stories of getting married all around Ireland, and one couple who got married in Malta. Don’t forget our great mobile app, through which you can get the entire magazine, just as you see it here, on your IOS and Android device. Having the issue on your phone means you can check it out on your commute to work, or while sipping coffee. You can purchase a single issue for €2.99 or a yearly subscription for €7.99.

Vitamin A

What every bride should know to achieve a brighter flawless complexion on her big day.

Vitamin B

Retinol, aka vitamin A, is the absolute superstar in

preventing our skin from ageing. Retinol Clearing Oil

from Dermalogica is a brand new addition to the Active Clearing range, designed to give you the clearest skin ever. Its ingredients are so effective that, when applied on the skin, they actually tell it to stay young by thickening the deep layers of the skin, so they remain plumper, brighter and more glowing. It also contains salicylic acid, which magically encourages the skin to carry out its own exfoliation process. Retinol Clearing Oil targets breakouts and visible signs of ageing. It is perfect to use overnight for visibly renewed skin in the morning, or ideal for busy brides on the run-up to the big day. Dermalogica Retinol Clearing Oil €83

Be the best you can be on your wedding day and invest in some real skincare that actually improves your skin. Double up on your skin’s vitamins with Skin Good Fats by the Skin Nerd. Vitamin E never fails to appear in most beauty products and is well-known for being one of the best antioxidants available. This product combines that with vitamin B3, also known as niacinamide, which is renowned for its effective refining of the skin’s texture. This powerful pairing will work to hydrate, soothe and protect dry, irritated and sensitive skin that is prone to redness. The Skin Nerd Skin Good Fats €42

Vitamin C

Probably one of the best vitamins to incorporate into your bridal routine, thanks to its glowing results and anti-ageing benefits, Trilogy Vitamin C Polishing Powder really gives the skin the energising surge it needs to gain back its radiance. When mixed with water, the polishing powder activates to create a powerful polishing milk that gently buffs and cleans the skin by removing dead skin cells and cleansing pores, whilst smoothing and brightening the skin. To Use: Pour ½ teaspoon into hands. Add a splash of warm water and gently mix to create a cleansing milk. For the best results, use with Trilogy’s Vitamin C Energising Mist Toner. Try it and “C” the difference! Trilogy Vitamin C Polishing Powder €26.95

Love in a Pandemic By Kellie Brierley

rides, what a whirlwind! Let me start by saying your wedding day is going to be the most incredible day of your life. When the pandemic hit early this year, the wedding industry took a major hit. A lot of uncertainty was in the air and a lot of questions were left unanswered; the most popular one – when can weddings get back to normal? We may not return to “normal”, but let’s support one another and find the new normal together. If your wedding has been postponed or your

regulations.

“Every wedding is unique and we want couples to have the most memorable experience from their big day. ” So, we now know the restrictions –, what is next? In order to adhere to these restrictions, the couple must re-look at their guest list. If downsizing your wedding is an option, Sandra Looney, wedding planner Wedding Planner and owner Owner of To Have and To Hold in Co. Cork, offers some great advice to those who are going ahead with a smaller wedding: “These more intimate weddings – or ‘microweddings’ –Micro Weddings’ have always been a thing, but not very popular in Ireland –, until now! With reduced guest numbers, if you can list everyone you really want to be at your (notso-big) wedding party on a single post-it note, then the micro-wedding is for you. “With the restrictions and different phases in place, the trick with a micro-wedding is to make a list of must-haves. We are finding that because the cost of the wedding has been dramatically reduced, more couples have then increased

Postpone your ‘official’ wedding to a different date, therefore you can still have the magical day you dreamed of with all your loved ones. The perfect compromise! Once you have your wedding date booked and your guest list is complete, save-the-dates and invitations are to be thought about next. But with this pandemic still in sight, couples fear that their wedding date may be thrown up in the air once again. Not to worry; Anne Dolan, owner of Annie Design Stationary, says, “One tip I am giving

details like a custom-designed menu to enhance their guests’ table on arrival or a welcome sign to their venue to remind their guests that they are still attending the biggest day of their friend’s or family member’s life.”

Say Yes to the dress, not to the stress! Let’s admit it ladies, shopping for a wedding dress is something of a journey! It’s a day we have dreamt of for so long. Well, good news: the shopping experience has changed for the better. In order to comply with social distancing measures, most stores will allow up to two guests with the bride for her appointment. “Don’t view this has a bad thing! Sometimes too many opinions can be overwhelming and ultimately blur your own. It gives you the opportunity to choose up to two people that know you and your style well and who will help choose a dress for YOU,” explains Donna, proprietor of Lilac Rose Bridal. “My advice to any brides going wedding dress shopping is to remember that Covid can never take away the fact that you are a bride to be.

While it may dictate how your wedding day might look, it doesn’t influence the type of dress that you can or cannot wear. “A smaller wedding need not mean a pared back dress if a detailed ballgown has always been your thing. Choose the dress that speaks to you and makes you feel amazing.” Up next: one of the most important elements on the “to-do list” – music. Choosing the music for your wedding can be one of the most enjoyable tasks of your wedding planning. I attended a showcase of The Bentley Boys

A Land Like No Other

On a recent trip to Vietnam I was bowled over by the charming people, the delicious food, the majestic landscape, the quaint villages and bustling cities .

you can explore the old quarters or shop in the upmarket boutiques – to the ancient, laidback towns of Hoi An and Hue, where restaurants, shops and ancient temples crowd the narrow cobbled streets in a glorious mix of the delicious cuisine, modern day commerce and ancient culture that typify Vietnam. The landscape is spectacular: from the deserted

Vietnam is a long way away. It feels even further away at the moment due to the global pandemic and all of the travel restrictions and border closures that have resulted. Pandemic or no pandemic, after the stress and strain of planning the wedding and the excitement and partying of the wedding itself, a long flight might be low on your wish list. But we’re optimistic that sooner or later the travel industry The Anantara Mui Ne

will recover and restrictions will be lifted. It’s always nice to dream of the perfect far-flung honeymoon spot. Eventually, once you’re on board your long-haul flight, you’ll have cabin crew bringing food and drink to your seat at regular intervals while you watch movies, read a book, or catch up on some shut eye. As it is your honeymoon, you really should spoil yourself with a business class flight as you’ll be treated like the VIP you really are. Bearing in mind that once you get to Vietnam you can live very cheaply indeed, this might be a treat worth taking; but even in economy the flight is quite enjoyable. I am a firm believer in treating the flight as part of your holiday and trying to enjoy the experience rather than treating it as something to be endured before your holiday

travel from Ho Chi Minh City in the south up to the Chinese border in the north in just two weeks flat. Travelling with Emirates from Dublin breaks the journey up into roughly two sevenhour chunks: first to Dubai, then on to Ho Chi Minh City. After a pleasant flight, we arrived into Ho Chi Minh City, a little tired but excited. The rather frosty reception from the immigration officer was immediately melted by the wonderfully welcoming greeting we received from the driver who had been sent to meet us from the Anantara Resort in Mui Ne, our first destination. We sat back in our air-conditioned, Wi-Fienabled limo and sipped cold water from the mini-fridge as the driver skilfully negotiated the city traffic. We watched in amazement as what seemed like a million mopeds crisscrossed junctions and roundabouts with no rules I could recognise, but the riders seemed to have a

Once a small fishing village and then a place where the young and hip pitched tents by the beach, Mui Ne is now a 10 kilometre-long string of beach resorts with some up-market exclusive hotels such as the Anantara. Feted as the sunniest spot in Vietnam, it is perfect for beach lovers and, with the wind blowing waves into the beach, it is ideal for kite surfing if you’re not one to just sit and soak up the rays. We arrived in Mui Ne at around midnight and were welcomed into the five-star Anantara Mui Ne with a warm smile, a hot towel and a cold ginger tea drink. Quickly and efficiently, we

The Anam Cam Ranh

The Anam Cam Ranh

When we strolled down for breakfast, we were given a tour of the breakfast room and the range of foods on offer, which took quite a few minutes to cover. From the freshly squeezed juices to the noodles, curry dishes, exotic fruits, cold meats, fish, and omelettes cooked to order, the breakfast here will set you up for the day. We decided to take the day to relax and recharge our batteries, so we headed to the pool for a morning swim followed by a quick dip in the sea to truly wake us up, and then had a long walk down the beach to take in the wonderful setting of this paradise by the sea. This was pretty much how we spent the rest of the day: sitting by the pool sipping cocktails, walking the beach and watching the kite surfers grapple with the wind. Then we took an afternoon stroll, exploring the shops, bars and restaurants along the strip before heading back to the hotel for a full body massage in the Anantara Spa, where any stress knots left over from the wedding or lingering aches from the journey were expertly massaged away. After a quick shower and change of clothes, we headed to dinner in the restaurant overlooking the pool and beach. This was our first proper taste of Vietnamese cuisine and it didn’t disappoint. The service was first class and the food even better. If we had more time, we would have loved to stay there for a third night and try our hand at kite surfing, but the next morning, after another beautiful breakfast, we headed to our second stop-off point on our trip, the Anam at Cam Ranh.

Cam Ranh The drive up to Cam Ranh took about four hours through some beautiful countryside and we were constantly clicking out the window of our car while the driver gave us a brief history of the area. The Anam is a five-star resort and a haven of serenity and service, harking back to a bygone era with its Indochine-inspired design and commanding 300 metres of beach frontage on one of the world’s most beautiful bays. There are stunning views across the ocean with islands to the east and the rugged jungle clad

Dinner in The Anam is a delight and it was here I had my first taste of Pho Ga, which was described on the menu as chicken soup but bore no resemblance to any soup I’d ever tasted. If I told you I ate the soup with chopsticks, you might get a better idea. The flavours were so rich and varied that each mouthful was a delight to the senses and I know now why they say Vietnamese food appeals to all five senses. The look, the aroma, the texture, the crunch and, most of all, the taste were all just wonderful.

Our beach-side room was a stone’s throw from the beach and the balcony offered the perfect opportunity to take in the full beauty of the location.

“No shoes. No news. and No stress. After two days of no shoes, no news and no stress, we were heading to our next destination Hoi An. The Anam is just a short taxi ride to the Cam Ranh International Airport and we caught our 6am flight to Danang. It was either that or an eight-hour car ride, so we decided on the early morning flight which was made a little more palatable by the delicious packed breakfast The Anam had waiting for us when we checked out at 4am. Once again, we felt we could have stayed here for at least another night which would have given us the chance to visit the thriving city of Nha Trang just 30 minutes away. This would become a familiar feeling as we wound our way up to the north, we just needed more time.

Hoi An Following a 20-minute taxi ride from Danang, we arrived at the Anantara Hội An, right on the river in Hội An. Ha Giang Ha Giang is one of the most remote provinces in Vietnam and can only be reached by bus. The seven-hour sleeper bus we took might explain why there are very few tourists there. The sleeper bus consists of lie-flat bunk beds and is crammed pretty tight. Hanoi After four days in the saddle, we headed back to Hanoi on another sleeper bus. As we had roughed it a bit up north, we were very much looking forward to the luxury of the Sofitel Legend Metropole in Hanoi; and what luxury! From the moment that you are escorted through the doors by the meticulously groomed doormen and greeted by the impeccably dressed ladies inside, the hotel oozes class. The classic French architecture of the Metropole wing and the more contemporary décor of the Opera wing create a harmonious blend between old world charm and modern luxury. The Metropole has hosted so many presidents and celebrities, the list is endless. From the Clintons to our very own President Higgins, from Prince William to Hollywood royalty Angelina and Brad, the great and the good make this hotel their favourite in Hanoi. If you’re on your honeymoon, you’ll be in good company, as Charlie Chaplin honeymooned here after eloping and marrying Paulette Goddard. The nine years of waiting were forgotten, and the wedding planning began! Because we both love to travel, we knew we would get married abroad. I had visited Malta as a child and loved its character and charm, along with its exceptional weather.

We began to search online and found Sarah Young, a fabulous wedding planner in Malta.

Most brides would panic in the days leading up to their wedding dealing with all the final details. Still, I felt completely at ease, knowing Sarah had everything in hand. John and I were able to enjoy our guests as they arrived in Malta, and for that, we are forever grateful. They made our day the best and the brightest it could be, while always ensuring that every detail exceeded our expectations. On the wedding day, Sarah Young and her team worked their magic and arranged to collect our guests after drinks at the Hotel to proceed to Garden Villa. We were fortunate to have both of our parents, 86-year-old Nanna and John’s 85-year-

hen we think of a honeymoon in the good old USA, we often think of a bustling city break on the east coast in New York, Boston or Washington, a West Coast road trip taking in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vegas and the Grand Canyon, or heading to the theme parks, beaches and keys in Florida.

the signature notes to a good Kentuckian, there is also some thrilling outdoor adventure, fine dining, a vibrant arts scene and a dash of history to go along with its southern charm. Rumour has it that Daniel Boone first discovered the beauty of Kentucky when he crossed the Appalachian Mountains from Virginia and saw the towering mountains, shimmering lakes and sun drenched forests. Nowadays he’d be more likely to see a team of thoroughbred horses cantering in the morning mist as Kentucky is world renowned for the quality of the horses bred here. Take a trip to the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington where you’ll see 40 breeds of horses over 1200 acres. After that take a trip to Northern Kentucky where their second most famous product - Bourbon Whiskey - is distilled. Similar to here in Ireland, there is a bit of a renaissance in bourbon with many new distilleries opening up each imparting their own style and flavour to what was already a world renowned product.

Dream Destinations While travel restrictions remain in place due to the current pandemic, we can only dream of foreign travel and plan for better times. Here are a few dream honeymoon destinations to whet your appetite.

Beachfront Cuisine If you want to combine a stunning beach honeymoon with world class cuisine, then the luxurious beachfront resort Meliá Koh Samui should be on your menu. Azizskandar Awang, the resort’s executive chef who clinched the Chef Hotelier of the Year award at the Hotelier Awards Asia, has created degustation, vegan, afternoon tea and Sunday brunch menus celebrating contemporary Thai, Western and Mediterranean fare. Served in the evening at the resort’s Breeza Beach Restaurant and Bar overlooking Choeng Mon Beach, Awang’s five-course Chef’s Tasting Menu includes ‘sea scallop with cauliflower puree, nantua sauce, pickled grapes and salicorne’ and ‘Jack’s Creek Wagyu beef with glazed carrot and parsnip puree, shallots, beetroot and red wine reduction’. Paired French, New Zealand, Spanish and Italian wines are optional. Awang’s five-course ‘Taste of Thai’ counterpart with optional Thai wine pairings features ‘salmon wrapped in betel leaf with light chu che sauce and pickled pearl onion’ and ‘Australian lamb in massaman sauce with peanut puree, crispy onion and potato gnocchi’.

Rocky Ride

One of the most romantic ways to travel is by train, and for spectacular scenery, it’s hard to beat the California Zephyr, which winds its way up the west coast of the United States of America. Experienced travellers say the California Zephyr offers one of the most beautiful train trips in North America. As you climb through the heart of the Rockies and further west through the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas, you may find it hard to disagree. The Zephyr runs daily between Chicago and San Francisco, coursing through the plains of Nebraska to Denver, across the Rockies to Salt Lake City, and then through Reno and Sacramento into Emeryville/ San Francisco. Connections to San Francisco and Oakland stations are available via Thruway Bus Service at Emeryville, California.

Glamping on a lake From a top-notch restaurant to a floating glamping pod village: you’ll find all this in Rožna Dolina near Nova Gorica. Get to know the Pikol family and its brand-new product, Lake Village. Pikol has created the first floating glamping village in Slovenia. Romantic floating cottages have a tranquil effect and inspire their occupants with the feeling of freedom. Four cottages called Water Villas are perfectly suited for couples, while the Forest Villa is ideal for families on vacation. The mornings will impress you with a rich breakfast of local delicacies brought directly to your cottage. During the day, you can take electric bikes to explore the beautiful surroundings, including the picturesque vineyards and green expanses of the Vipava Valley. In the evenings, Pikol will pamper you with culinary creations from its top-notch restaurant, which won a Michelin Plate Award earlier this year. You will pamper all your senses during your stay in the floating glamping village. Relaxation in a luxury cottage on the water in the embrace of nature will be perfectly complemented by exceptional cuisine, fine wines, sparkling wines and the hospitality of the Gašparins, who will provide you with the carefree Vipava vacation of your dreams.

Alma has unveiled 196 pavilions, 384 suites and an awe-inspiring host of world-class facilities, such as an eclectic selection of restaurants helmed by leading chefs, a food court with an array of local and international cuisine, a classical bar, a pool bar, a beach bar and a mini supermarket. Other drawing cards include: science museum, waterpark, 13-treatment room spa, art gallery, cinema, convention centre, amphitheatre, youth centre with virtual reality games, kids’ club, water sports centre, gymnasium, yoga room and 18-hole putting green. www.alma-resort.com

Wedding in Thailand’s Koh Samui island Weddings abroad don’t have to be small—on Thailand’s island of Koh Samui, you can book the whole of Meliá Koh Samui with its 159 rooms and 41 suites. I guess you can say we are childhood sweethearts, together almost 13 years. We met at a young age of 18 & 19 years old. We both worked in the hospitality industry, weddings to be exact. I was a waitress and James was the bartender. I would catch him looking at me from across the ballroom, and I made sure to get his attention every time I went to the bar. Who would have thought that us two young ones would end up wedding one another in that same very setting we met.

Once we found The Armada Hotel, we instantly fell in love! There is something so magical about this place.

Once we finalised the date, we were eager to start on our stationary. Spanish Point showcased an untouched beauty of Ireland. We wanted to create a simple & elegant invite in our traditional Irish language honouring our beautiful country. Annie Design was the first supplier I came in contact with and we instantly clicked. my grandfather linked my arm, I looked up and saw James at the top of the alter. I felt so much emotions in that very moment, it was beautiful.

We added a huge amount of our own personal touch to the wedding day; from the music selection, to the food, the decor etc. We both come from musical families so music was on the top of our priority list - we knew it had to be amazing! We wanted a tenor for our ceremony. We contacted the very talented Derek Moloney, one of the Three Irish Tenors and thankfully he was available for our day. He received a standing ovation during his performance during our mass, we even used it as the music to our wedding video. He was incredible! For our drinks reception, we chose a swinging jazz band with Sharon Crosbie

The second our first dance ended, our guests fled to the dance-floor and we danced the night away! We spent a lot of thought on our decor. We wanted it to represent our journey and make it personal. We decided to have cherry blossom trees down the aisle of the church and also as centrepieces in the ballroom paired with hundreds of candles, the ballroom was

Wedding Photography G

etting a professional photographer is the most important step to capturing the first day of your married life for posterity. These memories should be precious and will be with you forever; don’t leave them to chance.

Dealing with a professional means that not only are the odds of anything going wrong much slimmer, but you also have ways to engage with your photographer should a genuine problem arise. In an over-saturated market, professional wedding photographers need to protect their reputations if they are to stay in business. Their mortgage payments and their ability to put food on their families’ tables depend on their standing in the market. Many professional associations, such as the IPPA, have a code of ethics that members must adhere to. These typically cover quality of work, professional standards and how clients should be treated.
