hello, My name is Iris, and I am completing my second year of architectural studies at the University of Waterloo. My current interests in architecture are predicated on evaluating and shaping changes in social and ecological landscapes. I have particular interests in ecology and urbanism, as well as the development of new interfaces between people and their environments— especially in regards to materials science and technology. My education and life experiences to date have led me to conclude that architecture is inextricably linked to site and culture, though both are being increasingly stripped through the development of the modern city. The following selection of work is therefore a product of my speculation, curiosity, research, and expensive coffee addiction. :-S Thank you for your time. It would be a great privilege to work together.

Over fifty percent of immigrants to Arizona come from Mexico, and over ninety percent of Phoenix Hispanics are Mexican2. Therefore, Sonoran Latinos in Arizona are inextricably linked to the State’s local culture and traditions.

Due to the extreme climate conditions, water has always been a great asset and addition in developing an effective micro-climate for comfortable living in Arizona. However, an outrage of private pools now clutter suburban backyards and disrupt opportunities for community gathering. Floating City proposes an active urban boardwalk as a new form of public infrastructure in the residental neighbourhoods of Phoenix, Arizona. Bobbing on the surface of backyard pools, the modular, doublestorey units are made from standard steel sections: promoting community gathering up top, and providing shade for private programming below.

Lab: a bio-technology focused design company aimed on researching the applications of bio-pigmentation. Natural dyeing processes are water and space consumptative, and the environmental burdens of synthetic dyeing practices are well known. Bio-pigmentation offers a solution which is environmentally conscious, sustainable, non-toxic, and renewable. While investigation into bio-pigmentation has been conducted in the cosmetic and food industries, little has been published in the realm of fashion or technology. My current investigations are focused around determining the strength and longevity of pigment bonds to protein fibers, as well as the long-term capacity of the photo-protective properties of carotenoid pigments.

“Bacteria produce pigment for different evolutionary purposes, resulting in genetically useful colouration. For instance, the yellow-hued carotenoid pigments produced by M.luteus have the capability to absorb long wavelength UV radiation.1 Extracting and using this pigment in other applications, such as in sunscreen or to dye in fashion garments, utilizes a naturally occurring source of dye with beneficial properties for protecting human skin.2 Architecturally speaking, the obstruction of UV radiation is a primary goal of passive cooling strategies. Innovating sun shading technology with consideration of environmental sustainability and the biological characteristics of M.luteus is a foreseeable application of this research. By determining the UV absorption capability of the pigment produced by M.luteus dyed onto protein fibers, we can determine the economic and environmental viability of using this source as a naturally found colour in sun shading applications. The goal of this investigation is to design and test the pigment’s binding capabilities to protein fibres and its UV absorption rate over time.” Redinger, Iris and Whyte, Mark. “Testing the UV Absorption Capability of C a r t e n o i d P i g m e n t s t o I n f o r m S u n S h a d i n g M a t e r i a l s , ” Research Proposal, 2018.

Ae r i f o r m S / S 2 0 1 7 paris fashion week, 2017 | iris van herpen The Aeriform Collection marks the tenth anniversary of Iris van Herpen’s couture presence, merging high fashion with digital fabrication technology. The finale dress, Look 18, is made from over 300 domelike structures which have been laser cut from sheet metal and individually formed then shaped into place. The dress was made in collaboration with Philip Beesley Architect Inc. Soo Joo Park, a Korean influencer modelled the dress at Paris Fasion week; Miley Cyrus wore the dress to the MMVAs in 2017. The dress has since been acquired by the Royal Ontario Museum’s permanent collection in 2018, in anticipation for the Transforming Fashion Exhibition running from June-October 2018.
