I am Irma Veiga Schmitz, also known artistically as Irmaslane. I am a Spanish artist whose work is characterized by figurative and expressive creations against flat backgrounds, creating a contrast with meticulously crafted areas. The central theme of my work revolves around the female body and nature, exploring the duality between elaborated and discarded spaces. My primary interest is in conveying ideas and emotions through the interplay of color spots, textures, and brushstrokes. I find a profound connection between my art and the creation of environments. Beyond mere artistic expression, I see my artwork as a space to express ideas and emotions, as well as a means to dress a space, actively participating in the world of decoration. I believe in how the influence of the external environment affects each person’s interior, transforming my art not only into a visual expression but also into an element that impacts and transforms the space it inhabits.

Being self-taught, I honed my skills over the years by working as a fine arts model in various locations and contexts, from public bodies to studios of painters and architects in different countries. Although I felt the call of painting from a young age, participating in competitions, it was later when I decided to fully dedicate myself to art, merging my background in theater, circus, costume, and design with my passion for expressing emotions through the visual arts. As an artist, I engage in both custom commissions based on demand and pursue my personal artistic endeavors. If a client requests a piece from my catalog that has already been sold, I will replicate it in the specified size and incorporate any changes they may desire. It’s important to note that each artwork is treated as unique, ensuring it will never be an exact replica.

One of the predominant colors in my work is blue. The reason for the repetition of this color is none other than the contrast it creates in relation to skin tones. Specifically, the blue used is a somewhat muted, bluish-gray.

I might depict birds frequently because of my early exposure to ornithologists studying them in my home since childhood. Early experiences tend to shape the artistic preferences and themes.

FLYING IN CIRCLES
The act of painting birds and other animals doesn’t evoke as much for me. It’s more about establishing their connection with the human experience.
