These displays were designed and built by students at Lexington-Richland School District Five’s Center for Advanced Technical Studies in 2018 and 2019. Dominion Energy Awards $10,000 Grant for Virtual Environmental Education Program Dominion Energy awarded the Saluda Shoals Foundation a $10,000 grant to support the Virtual Environmental Education Program! This program was created to address the needs of school children, teachers, and homeschooling parents who might not be able to visit the Park for hands-on environmental lessons. Each year, more than 7,000 children take field trips to Saluda Shoals Park where rangers teach them about the importance of preserving and protecting our natural world. Children and teachers experience nature in new ways, opening their imaginations and helping their development in every major way – intellectually, emotionally, socially, spiritually, and physically. Due to Covid-19, nearly all school field trips have been canceled. To continue providing this vital education, Park rangers designed the Virtual Environmental Education program which consists of three components: 1) Environmental Education Virtual Field Trips, virtual classes hosted either in the Park or in a safe, socially distanced location at rural schools; 2) Backyard Saturdays, an in-depth once a month environmental education lesson (in person and virtual) held at the playground; and 3) Ranger School videos, short videos shared through social media featuring the wildlife and plant life found in the Park.
