Mission The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission exists to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of the district through the development of recreation programs that promote a lifestyle of wellness, physical activities and cultural experiences for all ages. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Recreation District The Irmo Chapin Recreation District was formed in 1969 to serve community members living in the Lexington County portion of School District Five. ICRC has earned a reputation for program and facility excellence and has attracted participants from surrounding counties. Because their tax dollars support recreation services, ICRC district residents receive discounted rates for programs and facility rentals (excluding Saluda Shoals Park) upon proof of residency.

New customers should call the park during business hours to establish an account before registering online. Registration is also accepted at each of the parks or by phone. Registration is confirmed upon payment. Because many classes fill up quickly, register one week before the class date so we can make class enrollment decisions. We will accept registration as long as there is space available. Fees Activity and event fees in this guide are subject to change without notice, prior to registration. Weather: Many of ICRC’s activities are held in venues that make them tentative based on weather conditions. Participants are responsible for checking to see if games have been cancelled, delayed, or rescheduled. ICRC ID Policy: Visitors to Crooked Creek and Seven Oaks Parks are required to present an ICRC ID with associated fees for admission to open gym, fitness and weight areas, racquetball courts, walking/running track and other unsupervised areas. Anyone age 6 and older must have a valid ICRC ID for admission. ID cards are valid for one year. Cancellation/Refund Policy: Refund requests must be received in writing no later than three days prior to the start of the program. A $5 service fee is charged. No refunds or transfers will be made once the activity has begun and certain activities, such as trips and special events, define a date after which no refunds will be made. Please check individual program requirements for guidelines. Full refunds/credits will be given if the program is cancelled by ICRC. Physical Requirements: Unless otherwise stated, activities are open to beginners and do not require previous experience. Average physical condition is all that is needed for most programs. Please call for information about accessibility or concerns about physical ability required for participation.

 

Assumption of Risk: All activities, including those offered by ICRC, have inherent risks which include personal injury or property loss. Prior to participation, you will be required to sign a form which acknowledges your understanding and acceptance of these risks. Parents or guardians must sign for youth ages 17 and under. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety, and you may choose to withdraw from an activity at any time you feel your safety is a concern.

Exit Piney Grove Road and turn left. Proceed approximately 1.5 miles to St. Andrews Road. Turn right, then left at the first traffic light. Saluda Shoals Park will be 1.5 miles on your left. Meeting Facilities The Environmental Education Center The Environmental Center features a 100-seat auditorium, two classrooms/meeting rooms, an Exhibit Hall and a 3,776 SF deck. Picnic shelter rentals are also available. Picnic Shelters Saluda Shoals Park also offers six shelters that accommodate 24 to 250 people. Shelters are available for rent from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Shelters are equipped with lights, fans and grills. Parking is available at each shelter, restrooms are nearby and all are connected to the Greenway Trail and other walking trails. The two largest shelters, Cattail and River Birch, each accommodate 250 guests. The River Birch shelter is located near the beautiful Saluda River and the Cattail Shelter is directly off the boardwalk in the Saluda Shoals Wetland Preserve. Call 213-2053 for reservations.

River Center The River Center is a versatile, full-service conference center offering over 5,000 SF of meeting space. With its soaring two-story lobby, stone fireplaces, and bright spacious meeting rooms, the River Center can accommodate both small and large business meetings and social functions. A wedding gazebo is available for outdoor weddings. Call Jason White at 213-2026 for reservations and information. Real Team Challenge Course Bring your team to Saluda Shoals Park for a unique and effective team building experience. The Real Team Challenge course, for adults 18 years and older, is a series of difficult but achievable mental and physical activities designed to improve the performance of your group. All challenges are lead by our trained, professional staff. Healthy outdoor recreation, team building and fun are key components of the Challenge Course Program. For more information, call Alex Beck at 213-2054. The Saluda Shoals Park Train The SSP train is available for a two-hour rental to bring excitement to your event or child’s birthday party. Both adults and children can ride along selected trails through beautiful Saluda Shoals Park in the brightly painted train! Capacity 20 riders. Call 213-2053 to reserve the train for your next party. Fee: $144/2 hours. Pony Parties Arrange for a pony to be at your child’s next event! Our experienced equestrian provider will bring a pony to the park for an hour of assisted walking time. Party guests will take a one-hour horse drawn carriage ride through the beautiful park. Rides will depart from the birthday party venue. This program is perfect for ages two and up. George Bryan Fall 55+ Golf Golf is a low impact sport, making it a great way to get active and re-energize a fatigued body. Our 55 and Older Golf Class is designed to study the entire game of golf. There is also emphasis on flexibility, conditioning, and nutrition. The facilities, curriculum, technology, and passion for players to learn golf ensures progress at the fastest possible rate. Golf has also been shown to increase life expectancy. Novice/Intermediate classes are for the new and intermediate skilled players. Advanced/Expert classes are available for players with experienced to advanced skill levels. Classes are held at the George Bryan Golf Academy. Meals are delivered by Crooked Creek Park and Seven Oaks Park volunteers by 1:00 p.m. Monday–Friday. Nutrition Sites A hot nutritious meal and social or physical activity is provided for older adults Monday – Friday at Crooked Creek and Seven Oaks Parks from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Physical Chairapy Sit down and enjoy a great workout. This class is offered at both nutrition sites twice weekly. Transportation Transportation to nutrition sites, medical facilities, and other necessary appointments is available to older adults in our service area based on identified needs. Loan Closet The Ruth Browne Memorial Loan Closet loans wheelchairs, walkers, and other durable medical equipment to older adults on a short-term basis. Donations of durable medical equipment are welcome at both Seven Oaks Park and Crooked Creek Park. Case Management Caseworkers are available at both Crooked Creek Park and Seven Oaks Park to help older adults and their families identify needs and interests. Our caseworkers will assist them in gaining access to programs, services, or benefits needed.

Pinochle Come join a newly formed Pinochle group at Crooked Creek Park. Many members have not played in 30–40 plus years so a current level of knowledge is not required. Project LOVE Project LOVE is entering its 29th year this school year and we can always use more volunteers. Volunteers spend approximately one hour per week with students sharing their hobbies, interests, and/or stories. Project LOVE begins in late September/early October and runs through April. Examples of Project LOVE lessons include sewing, gardening, etiquette, various crafts, woodworking, quilting, geography/travels, life stories/history, stamp collecting, etc. For more information, contact Dena Long at 345-6181 or dlong@icrc.net. Apple Harvest Health Fair Join us for the 6th Annual Apple Harvest Health Fair, Wednesday, October 19 from 9:00 a.m.–12:00 noon at Seven Oaks Park. There will be free health screenings, more than 50 exhibitors with free educational materials, and door prizes. Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission invites the community to gather at Seven Oaks Park on Thursday, November 17th for a traditional holiday feast at our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. Please bring a dessert or fresh fruit to share. There is no charge for the luncheon, but please register by November 8. AKTION Club AKTION Club is a community service group for young adults with special needs. The club’s mission is to provide participants with an opportunity to develop leadership skills and serve their community. AKTION club meets the second Monday of each month at Seven Oaks Park at 6:00 p.m. and is sponsored by the St. Andrews Kiwanis Club. C.A.S.T. Carolina Actors with Special Talents (C.A.S.T.) is a theater program designed for young adults with disabilities. The program develops self-confidence and public speaking skills through theatrical performance. C.A.S.T. will have two performances of a Christmas-themed show, Nov. 18th and 19th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Square Theatre in Lexington. The fee includes transportation, dessert and a beverage. In October, visit The Cupcake Shop, then walk in downtown Columbia. In November, try Nestle’s Tollhouse Cookies and stroll through the Village at Sandhills Mall. North Pole U North Pole U is a holiday day camp for children ages 5–12 in K–6th grade. Daily activities include arts and crafts, organized games, play, social time and field trips. 2011–2012 School Year Afternoon Safari provides a safe, nurturing environment and offers a variety of opportunities for children to grow physically, socially and academically. Our daily schedule includes an afternoon snack, recess, supervised homework time, social recreation and physical education. Children are grouped by grades as they rotate through these program areas. Activities include arts & crafts, reading, character building exercises, guest speakers/demonstrators and organized games. There are no membership fees and no auditions. Kids’ Art Club This club teaches children arts and crafts techniques through hands-on experience. Students will explore a new exciting art project each class including: paper-making, mosaics, jewelry making, weaving, collage, macramé, and more. Charley’s Back Yard Treasure Hunt Come to Saluda Shoals Park and pick up a Charley’s Backyard Treasure Hunt map. Explore the park to find treasures like the silver fish and beautiful Corley Island. Treasure Hunt activities can be completed in one day or treasures can be discoverd over a few visits to the park. $4R/$5NR Parking Fee Applies. Saluda Shoals Park. Geocaching Explore Saluda Shoals Park and look for geocaches using a handheld GPS device. There are three microcaches (1.5 inches long) and four regular size caches (waterbottle size) hidden throughout the park. One cache each quarter is designated as the prize cache. Find it and provide proof to receive a prize donated by our quarterly sponsor The Backpacker. There are also numerous caches in the park that have been placed by other Geocachers. Upload Geocashing coordinates to your GPS at www.geocaching.com. Coordinates are also available at the Environmental Center front desk. GPS’s are available for loan at the Environmental Center. A valid driver’s license and credit card are required for equipment loan. GPS etiquette states to never to take items without leaving items. Parking fees apply. Saluda Shoals Park. Orienteering Course Saluda Shoals Park is offering an orienteering course of medium difficulty for groups of up to 20 participants. Each group will receive a brief period of instruction, orienteering coordinates, a compass and an orienteering sequence rubbing sheet. Participants should be prepared to complete the course in about an hour. Maximum 20 participants per group. Fee: $35. Saluda Shoals Park. New! Off-Site Team Initiatives If your group, school, or business cannot come to Saluda Shoals Park to participate in Team Initiatives, our experienced staff will bring them to your place of business! Team Building Initiatives do not require any heavy apparatus but participants have to work together as a team to solve problems. Activities include: Titanic, Thieve the Gold, Acid Pour, Invisible Maze, Group Juggle and many more. These initiatives will be available as indoor or outdoor programs for ages 18 years old and up. One or two-hour programs are available on week days from September through March. Fee: $150 per group of 20 participants for 1 hour. $250 per group of 20 participants for 2 hour. Saluda Shoals Park Challenge Course Adventures Bring a group out to the park and try an element on the Real Team Challenge course. This program is designed for older children and young adults. All challenges are led by trained, professional staff. Individual elements are perfect for scout groups, birthday parties and family reunions. Team Adventure This exciting alternative to the usual team building programs gives teams everything they need to navigate their way around the park, completing different objectives as they go. Challenges include physical team building challenges, puzzles and other mental brainteasers. If your team has done traditional ropes courses and team building sessions this adventure is for you! Teams receive a backpack, maps, decoding devices and more. Brief instruction is included. All participants must be 18 years or older. Minimum 15 participants/maximum of 40 participants per group. The “Real Team” Challenge course is a series of difficult but achievable mental and physical activities designed to improve the performance of your group. While the elements are challenging, none are too physically demanding, allowing adults to participate at their own level of ability. All challenges are lead by our trained, professional staff. Brownie and Girl Scout Workshops Enjoy a one-hour nature workshop at Saluda Shoals Park. Brownies can earn two Try-Its. Juniors can earn the Earth Connections Badge or the Wildlife Badge. Brownie Workshops Animals and Watching Wildlife – Learn about animals and the best ways to observe them. Binoculars and magnifying lenses are provided, or you can bring your own! Earth and Sky/Eco Explorer – Study soil by taking soil samples, temperatures, exploring nature, and even make rocks! Junior Workshops Earth Connections – Study soil, take soil samples and look closely at plants to understand the relationship between soils and plants. Learn to identify trees and determine their age. Wildlife – Study and identify animals using field guides, and binoculars. Learn a few bird calls and take an up-close look at an insect or plant using microscopes. Binoculars and field guides are available, or bring your own! Saluda Shoals Park NEW! Scout Camping Scout groups are invited to camp overnight at Saluda Shoals Park. Environmental Education School Programs The Environmental Education Center at Saluda Shoals Park provides educational programs for all grade levels. The programs cover Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science. Programs are inquiry based and are developed to address the South Carolina Education Science Standards. The programs have three components: 1) a classroom or outdoor laboratory lesson to establish the principle; 2) an interactive component including a visit to the Exhibit Hall or net dipping and specimen collecting for the Wetland Preserve Programs 3) “immersion learning” nature walk to a specific habitat

All programs include pre-visit and post-visit activity sheets to help teachers prepare for the unit lessons. Each classroom holds up to 25 children. Teachers must be with the class. Additional chaperones are welcome. Arrangements can be made for schools bringing more than fifty students. Guided by a Park Ranger, paddle a water trail on the Saluda River to the confluence of Rawls Creek and discover the effects of cold water meeting warm water. Explore the “shoals” and understand the unique habitat they form. Paddle across the “Fall Line” and learn the geologic importance of this area. Learn the basics of canoeing and river navigation. Fee: $10 per student. Maximum 20 students. Required student/chaperone ratio: • Grades 2–8, 1 chaperone per boat (2 students). • Grades 9–12, 1 chaperone per 5 students. • Additional chaperones: $10 per person. Enjoy an adventure with the senior travelers. Day and overnight trips are offered approximately once a week. Register by phone or at Seven Oaks Park or Crooked Creek Park. ICRC trips are designed specifically for individuals 50 years old and older, but are open to anyone 18 years old and older. Anyone under 18 years must be approved by the Recreation Commission prior to registration. All fees must be paid at the time of registration! Lake Ashwood Trail Hike Located in Lee County, this pleasant walking trail provides a small piece of history and a wide variety of wildlife. The two-mile loop circles 73-acre Lake Ashwood, which is said to have been created when slaves diked up McGrits Creek during the last century. During the hike, see many beautiful birds like Carolina Wrens, Northern Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Redheaded Woodpeckers. The area is mainly open woodland, with beautiful yellow Jessamine, South Carolina’s state flower, and wild grapes. Following the hike, stop for a dutch treat lunch at Watford’s BBQ in Bishopville. Halloween at the Park Bring your little ghosts and goblins trick-or-treating on our outdoor trick-or-treat trail through Crooked Creek Park from 6:30–7:30 p.m. on the Friday before Halloween. Inside we will have plenty of carnival games and prizes, a costume contest, a moonwalk, an inflatable slide, concessions, and all the fun you can imagine! This is a great safe and fun event for the whole family. Tickets for carnival games are $.25 each. Take a hayride to the boardwalk at the Wetland Preserve where Trick-or-treaters will hear animal sounds and see night creatures as they stroll along the boardwalk gathering candy. Nature Interpreters along the way will have nocturnal animal facts to share. Play Halloween games, listen to a storyteller, decorate a cookie, make s’mores, and enjoy some hot cider!
