Mission The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission exists to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of the district through the development of recreation programs that promote a lifestyle of wellness, physical activities and cultural experiences for all ages. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Recreation District The Irmo Chapin Recreation District was formed in 1969 to serve community members living in the Lexington County portion of School District Five. ICRC has earned a reputation for program and facility excellence and has attracted participants from surrounding counties. Because their tax dollars support recreation services, ICRC district residents receive discounted rates for programs and facility rentals (excluding Saluda Shoals Park) upon proof of residency. New customers should call the park during business hours to establish an account before registering online. Registration is also accepted at each of the parks or by phone. Registration is confirmed upon payment. Because many classes fill up quickly, register one week before the class date so we can make class enrollment decisions. We will accept registration as long as there is space available. Fees: Activity and event fees in this guide are subject to change without notice, prior to registration. Weather: Many of ICRC’s activities are held in venues that make

them tentative based on weather conditions. Participants are responsible for checking to see if games have been cancelled, delayed, or rescheduled. ICRC ID Policy: Visitors to Crooked Creek and Seven Oaks Parks are required to present an ICRC ID with associated fees for admission to open gym, fitness and weight areas, racquetball courts, walking/running track and other unsupervised areas. Anyone age 6 and older must have a valid ICRC ID for admission. ID cards are valid for one year. Cancellation/Refund Policy: Refund requests must be received in writing no later than three days prior to the start of the program. A $5 service fee is charged. No refunds or transfers will be made once the activity has begun and certain activities, such as trips and special events, define a date after which no refunds will be made. Please check individual program requirements for guidelines. Full refunds/credits will be given if the program is cancelled by ICRC. Physical Requirements: Unless otherwise stated, activities

are open to beginners and do not require previous experience. Average physical condition is all that is needed for most programs. Please call for information about accessibility or concerns about physical ability required for participation.

Assumption of Risk: All activities, including those offered  

by ICRC, have inherent risks which include personal injury or property loss. Prior to participation, you will be required to sign a form which acknowledges your understanding and acceptance of these risks. Parents or guardians must sign for youth ages 17 and under. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety, and you may choose to withdraw from an activity at any time you feel your safety is a concern.

Exit Piney Grove Road and turn left. Proceed approximately 1.5 miles to St. Andrews Road. Turn right, then left at the first traffic light. Saluda Shoals Park will be 1.5 miles on your left. Meeting Facilities The Environmental Education Center The Environmental Center features a 100-seat auditorium, two classrooms/meeting rooms, an Exhibit Hall and a 3,776 SF deck. Picnic shelter rentals are also available. Picnic Shelters Saluda Shoals Park also offers six shelters that accommodate 24 to 250 people. Shelters are available for rent from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Shelters are equipped with lights, fans and grills. Parking is available at each shelter, restrooms are nearby and all are connected to the Greenway Trail and other walking trails. The two largest shelters, Cattail and River Birch, each accommodate 250 guests. The River Birch shelter is located near the beautiful Saluda River and the Cattail Shelter is directly off the boardwalk in the Saluda Shoals Wetland Preserve. Call 213-2053 for reservations.

River Center The River Center is a versatile, full-service conference center offering over 5,000 SF of meeting space. With its soaring two-story lobby, stone fireplaces, and bright spacious meeting rooms, the River Center can accommodate both small and large business meetings and social functions. A wedding gazebo is available for outdoor weddings. Call Jason White at 213-2026 for reservations and information. Real Team Challenge Course Bring your team to Saluda Shoals Park for a unique and effective team building experience. The Real Team Challenge course, for adults 18 years and older, is a series of challenging but achievable mental and physical activities designed to improve the performance of your group. All challenges are lead by our trained, professional staff. Healthy outdoor recreation, team building and fun are key components of the Challenge Course Program. For more information, call Alex Beck at 213-2054. The Saluda Shoals Park Train The SSP train is available for a two-hour rental to bring excitement to your event or child’s birthday party. Both adults and children can ride along selected trails through beautiful Saluda Shoals Park in the brightly painted train! Capacity 20 riders. Call 213-2053 to reserve the train for your next party. Fee: $144/2 hours. Pony Parties Arrange for a pony to be at your child’s next event! Our experienced equestrian provider will bring a pony to the park for an hour of assisted walking time. Meals are delivered by Crooked Creek Park and Seven Oaks Park volunteers by 1:00 p.m. Monday–Friday. Nutrition Sites A hot nutritious meal and social or physical activity is provided for older adults Monday – Friday at Crooked Creek and Seven Oaks Parks from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Physical Chairapy Sit down and enjoy a great workout. This class is offered at both nutrition sites twice weekly. Transportation Transportation to nutrition sites, medical facilities, and other necessary appointments is available to older adults in our service area based on identified needs. Loan Closet The Ruth Browne Memorial Loan Closet loans wheelchairs, walkers, and other durable medical equipment to older adults on a short-term basis. Donations of durable medical equipment are welcome at both Seven Oaks Park and Crooked Creek Park. Case Management Caseworkers are available at both Crooked Creek Park and Seven Oaks Park to help older adults and their families identify needs and interests. Our caseworkers will assist them in gaining access to programs, services, or benefits needed.

Project LOVE Project LOVE is looking for volunteers to spend approximately one hour per week with students sharing their hobbies, interests, and/or stories. Project LOVE begins in late September and runs through April. AKTION Club AKTION Club is a community service group for young adults with special needs. The club’s mission is to provide participants with an opportunity to develop leadership skills and serve their community. AKTION club meets the second Monday of each month at Seven Oaks Park at 6:00 p.m. and is sponsored by the St. Andrews Kiwanis Club. C.A.S.T. Carolina Actors with Special Talents (C.A.S.T.) is a program designed exclusively for young adults with disabilities. The program will consist of weekly 75 minute classes and a production for friends and family. The program is designed to help these young adults develop self-confidence and public speaking skills though theatrical performance. Each participant will also receive a C.A.S.T. t-shirt. Outer Limits Outer Limits is a program that is designed to foster social skills, increase leisure opportunities and create friendships in a social setting for adults with disabilities. In November, we are off to Frankies Fun Park for games and prizes with a quick dinner at Wendys. The cost of the program includes transportation, cost of dessert and drink. In October, we will go to Bruster's and then walk in Saluda Shoals Park. In November, we will try Nestles Toll House Cookies and stroll through the Sandhills Outdoor Mall. Holiday Festival of Lights Capture the magic of the season with a trip to the Annual Holiday Festival of Lights in Charleston, SC. Begin with dinner in Charleston followed by a drive through of millions of sparkling lights and hundreds of light displays. Stretch your legs at Winter Wonderland. PALMETTO provides a variety of activities in order for participants to attain the following goals: • Develop independent living skills, communication and socialization. • Improve physical and mental health through community based recreation and leisure activities (Tuesday). • Increase self-esteem by participating in community service projects (Wednesday). • Gain work experience through a variety of work related activities (Thursday). Racquetball Crooked Creek Park is home to 2 racquetball courts. A court can be reserved in 1-hour increments by calling the front desk. The courts are open during normal park hours, and players must hold an Adult or Youth Basic Pass. The court fee can be paid each time or players can purchase a punch card for multiple visits. It’s filled with seasonal activities that are fun and full of nature facts. X-Plorer Packs are available on a first-come, first served basis. Driver’s identification is required to borrow packs and no registration necessary. Packs include: Field guides, a magnifying glass, binoculars and seasonal nature activities. Saluda Shoals Park Geocaching Explore Saluda Shoals Park, Seven Oaks Park and Crooked Creek Park to look for geocaches using a handheld GPS device. Each quarter a cache is designated as a prize cache. Find it and provide proof to receive a prize donated by our quarterly sponsor, The Backpacker. There are numerous caches in the park that have been placed by Geocachers and Park Rangers. If you would like to place caches in the parks please call Alex Beck at 213-2054 for a cache application. Orienteering Course Saluda Shoals Park is offering an orienteering course of medium difficulty for groups of up to 20 participants. Team Adventure This exciting alternative to the usual team building programs gives teams everything they need to navigate their way around the park, completing different objectives as they go. Environmental Education School Programs The Environmental Education Center at Saluda Shoals Park provides educational programs for all grade levels. The programs cover Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science. Programs are inquiry based and are developed to address the South Carolina Education Science Standards. The programs have three components: 1) a classroom or outdoor laboratory lesson to establish the principle; 2) an interactive component including a visit to the Exhibit Hall or net dipping and specimen collecting for the Wetland Preserve Programs 3) “immersion learning” nature walk to a specific habitat All programs include pre-visit and post-visit activity sheets to help teachers prepare for the unit lessons. Each classroom holds up to 25 children. Teachers must be with the class. Additional chaperones are welcome. Arrangements can be made for schools bringing more than fifty students. History Programs Interpretive History Programs at Saluda Shoals Park are South Carolina Standards based and cover a variety of topics for Elementary School. Classes are conducted in an indoor setting. Children will be able to compare and contrast daily life past and present, use maps and reproduction tools to experience settlers’ migration route to the colonies. Students will role play and hear stories of how children worked in the cotton mills and how farmers living on the Saluda River operated their flat boats to transport people across the river. Guided by a Park Ranger, paddle a water trail on the Saluda River to the confluence of Rawls Creek and discover the effects of cold water meeting warm water. Explore the “shoals” and understand the unique habitat they form. Paddle across the “Fall Line” and learn the geologic importance of this area. Learn the basics of canoeing and river navigation. Fee: $10 per student. Maximum 20 students. Required student/chaperone ratio: • Grades 5–8, 1 chaperone per boat (2 students). • Grades 9–12, 1 chaperone per 5 students. • Additional chaperones: $10 per person. Halloween at the Park Bring your little ghosts and goblins trick-or-treating on our outdoor trail from 6:30–7:30 p.m. Inside we will have plenty of carnival games and prizes, a costume contest, scream contest, a moonwalk, an inflatable slide, concessions, and all the fun you can imagine! This is a great safe and fun event for the whole family.
