Mission The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission exists to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of the district through the development of recreation programs that promote a lifestyle of wellness, physical activities and cultural experiences for all ages. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Recreation District The Irmo Chapin Recreation District was formed in 1969 to serve community members living in the Lexington County portion of School District Five. ICRC has earned a reputation for program and facility excellence and has attracted participants from surrounding counties. Because their tax dollars support recreation services, ICRC district residents receive discounted rates for programs and facility rentals (excluding Saluda Shoals Park) upon proof of residency.

New customers should call the park during business hours to establish an account before registering online. Registration is also accepted at each of the parks or by phone. Registration is confirmed upon payment. Because many classes fill up quickly, register one week before the class date so we can make class enrollment decisions. We will accept registration as long as there is space available. Fees Activity and event fees in this guide are subject to change without notice, prior to registration. Weather: Many of ICRC’s activities are held in venues that make them tentative based on weather conditions. Participants are responsible for checking to see if games have been cancelled, delayed, or rescheduled. ICRC ID Policy: Visitors to Crooked Creek and Seven Oaks Parks are required to present an ICRC ID with associated fees for admission to open gym, fitness and weight areas, racquetball courts, walking/running track and other unsupervised areas. Anyone age 6 and older must have a valid ICRC ID for admission. ID cards are valid for one year. Cancellation/Refund Policy: Refund requests must be received in writing no later than three days prior to the start of the program. A $5 service fee is charged. No refunds or transfers will be made once the activity has begun and certain activities, such as trips and special events, define a date after which no refunds will be made. Please check individual program requirements for guidelines. Full refunds/credits will be given if the program is cancelled by ICRC. Physical Requirements: Unless otherwise stated, activities are open to beginners and do not require previous experience. Average physical condition is all that is needed for most programs. Please call for information about accessibility or concerns about physical ability required for participation.

 

Assumption of Risk: All activities, including those offered by ICRC, have inherent risks which include personal injury or property loss. Prior to participation, you will be required to sign a form which acknowledges your understanding and acceptance of these risks. Parents or guardians must sign for youth ages 17 and under. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety, and you may choose to withdraw from an activity at any time you feel your safety is a concern.

Exit Piney Grove Road and turn left. Proceed approximately 1.5 miles to St. Andrews Road. Turn right, then left at the first traffic light. Saluda Shoals Park will be 1.5 miles on your left. Meeting Facilities The Environmental Education Center The Environmental Center features a 100-seat auditorium, two classrooms/meeting rooms, an Exhibit Hall and a 3,776 SF deck. Picnic shelter rentals are also available. Picnic Shelters Saluda Shoals Park also offers six shelters that accommodate 24 to 250 people. Shelters are available for rent from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Shelters are equipped with lights, fans and grills. Parking is available at each shelter, restrooms are nearby and all are connected to the Greenway Trail and other walking trails. The two largest shelters, Cattail and River Birch, each accommodate 250 guests. The River Birch shelter is located near the beautiful Saluda River and the Cattail Shelter is directly off the boardwalk in the Saluda Shoals Wetland Preserve. Call 213-2053 for reservations.

River Center The River Center is a versatile, full-service conference center offering over 5,000 SF of meeting space. With its soaring two-story lobby, stone fireplaces, and bright spacious meeting rooms, the River Center can accommodate both small and large business meetings and social functions. A wedding gazebo is available for outdoor weddings. Call Jason White at 213-2026 for reservations and information. Real Team Challenge Course Bring your team to Saluda Shoals Park for a unique and effective team building experience. The Real Team Challenge course, for adults 18 years and older, is a series of difficult but achievable mental and physical activities designed to improve the performance of your group. All challenges are lead by our trained, professional staff. Healthy outdoor recreation, team building and fun are key components of the Challenge Course Program. For more information, call Alex Beck at 213-2054. The Saluda Shoals Park Train The SSP train is available for a two-hour rental to bring excitement to your event or child’s birthday party. Both adults and children can ride along selected trails through beautiful Saluda Shoals Park in the brightly painted train! Capacity 20 riders. Call 213-2053 to reserve the train for your next party. Fee: $144/2 hours. Pony Parties Arrange for a pony to be at your child’s next event! Our experienced equestrian provider will bring a pony to the park for an hour of assisted walking time. Fall Sports Registration: August 2–25, 2011 Coaches Wanted! ICRC needs volunteer coaches for all youth sports. Cheerleading Participants will cheer for one of the youth league football games each week and will practice 1–2 times per week. New! ICRC USSSA Baseball Irmo-Jackets Baseball Chapin-Talon Baseball Join us for some exciting, competitive baseball action with ICRC’s new USSSA Baseball program. Age groups offered will be 10U, 11U, 12U, 13U, and 14U. The aging date is May 1, 2012. An informational meeting will be held at Crooked Creek Park in Chapin on July 18 at 6:30 p.m. and at Seven Oaks Park in Irmo on July 25 at 6:30 p.m. Tryouts will be held in Chapin on July 23 and in Irmo on July 30. Times TBA. There will be a $300 fee for players that are selected for the teams. The fee covers two game jerseys, a fitted hat, game pants and belt, socks, USSSA registration, USSSA insurance and tournament fees. George Bryan Fall 55+ Golf Golf is a low impact sport, making it a great way to get active and re-energize a fatigued body. Our 55 and Older Golf Class is designed to study the entire game of golf. There is also emphasis on flexibility, conditioning, and nutrition. The facilities, curriculum, technology, and passion for players to learn golf ensures progress at the fastest possible rate. Golf has also been shown to increase life expectancy. Novice/Intermediate classes are for the new and intermediate skilled players. Meals are delivered by Crooked Creek Park and Seven Oaks Park volunteers by 1:00 p.m. Monday–Friday. Nutrition Sites A hot nutritious meal and social or physical activity is provided for older adults Monday – Friday at Crooked Creek and Seven Oaks Parks from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Physical Chairapy Sit down and enjoy a great workout. This class is offered at both nutrition sites twice weekly. Transportation Transportation to nutrition sites, medical facilities, and other necessary appointments is available to older adults in our service area based on identified needs. Loan Closet The Ruth Browne Memorial Loan Closet loans wheelchairs, walkers, and other durable medical equipment to older adults on a short-term basis. Donations of durable medical equipment are welcome at both Seven Oaks Park and Crooked Creek Park. Case Management Caseworkers are available at both Crooked Creek Park and Seven Oaks Park to help older adults and their families identify needs and interests. Our caseworkers will assist them in gaining access to programs, services, or benefits needed.

Pinochle Come join a newly formed Pinochle group at Crooked Creek Park. Many members have not played in 30–40 plus years so a current level of knowledge is not required. Project LOVE Project LOVE is in it’s 28th year and is always looking for volunteers. Volunteers spend about one hour per week with students sharing their hobbies, interests, and/or stories. Project LOVE meets at Chapin Elementary on Friday mornings and at Seven Oaks Park on Thursday afternoons. Senior Picnic Come join the fun at our annual picnic at Saluda Shoals Park on Thursday, September 15 from 11:00a.m. until 1:00p.m. We’ll have burgers from the grill with all the fixings! Therapeutic Recreation Super Summer Camp Super Summer Camp is for children with special needs and their siblings. The camp offers activities like crafts, games, canoeing and more. Campers will have two field trips per week and visit a local park every Friday for a picnic lunch. Bring a bag lunch each day. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Participants must be moderately independent in all activities of daily living. We will have a 1:3 staff to child ratio. If closer supervision is needed for your child, a personal assistant will need to be provided for attendance. There are no membership fees and no auditions. Children’s ’ Theatre t Participants learn all aspects of producing a live theatrical production and participate in a spring performance. Orienteering Course Saluda Shoals Park is offering an orienteering course of medium difficulty for groups of up to 20 participants. Each group will receive a brief period of instruction, orienteering coordinates, a compass and an orienteering sequence rubbing sheet. Participants should be prepared to complete the course in about an hour. Maximum 20 participants per group. Fee: $35. Saluda Shoals Park. Geocaching Explore Saluda Shoals Park and look for geocaches using a handheld GPS device. There are three microcaches (1.5 inches long) and four regular size caches (waterbottle size) hidden throughout the park. One cache each quarter is designated as the prize cache. Find it and provide proof to receive a prize donated by our quarterly sponsor Carolina Raptor Center. There are also numerous caches in the park that have been placed by other Geocachers. The Geocashing coordinates are on www.geocaching.com where you can upload the various caches on your GPS. Coordinates and information are also available at the Environmental Center front desk. GPS etiquette is never to take items without leaving items. GPS’s available for loan at the Environmental Center. A valid driver’s license and credit card are required for equipment loan. Off-Site Team Initiatives If your group, school, businesses or organization cannot come to Saluda Shoals Park to participate in Team Initiatives, our experienced staff will bring them to your place of business! Team Building Initiatives do not require any heavy apparatus but participants have to work together as a team to solve problems. Activities include: Titanic, Thieve the Gold, Acid Pour, Invisible Maze Group Juggle and many more. These initiatives will be available as indoor or outdoor programs for ages 18 years old and up. Saluda Shoals Park Team Adventure This is an exciting alternative to the usual team building programs. Teams are given everything they need to navigate their way around the park, completing different objectives as they go. Real Team Challenge Course Bring your team to Saluda Shoals Park for a unique and effective team building experience. The “Real Team” Challenge course is a series of difficult but achievable mental and physical activities designed to improve the performance of your group. Environmental Education School Programs The Environmental Education Center at Saluda Shoals Park provides educational programs for all grade levels. The programs cover Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science. Programs are inquiry based and are developed to address the South Carolina Education Science Standards. The programs have three components: 1) classroom lesson to establish the principle 2) interactive component including a visit to the Exhibit Hall 3) “immersion learning” nature walk to a specific habitat

All programs include pre-visit and post-visit activity sheets to help teachers prepare for the unit lessons. Each classroom holds up to 25 children. Teachers must be with the class. Additional chaperones are welcome. Arrangements can be made for schools bringing more than fifty students. Tour includes witnessing the legendary submarine in its 90,000 gallon conservation tank, artifacts excavated from inside the submarine, life size model from the TNT movie, the gold coin that saved the Captain’s life, and more. Calhoun Falls Trail Hike This rolling 1.7 mile blue blazed loop trail begins at the trailhead near the tennis courts in Calhoun Falls State Recreation Area. You will descend wooden steps into a mixed pine and hardwood forest bordering scenic Lake Russell. As you loop toward the lake, you will discover unexpected vistas as you hike up and down gentle hills and across numerous footbridges. At the far end of the loop, you can take a spur trail to the camping area, or continue and return to the tennis courts. Crooked Creek Farmers Market Crooked Creek Park is making it easier to adopt a healthy lifestyle by starting a local farmers market. Beginning in June, the market will be held on Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Get some items crossed off of your shopping list by buying fresh, local produce at the farmers market! Browse through the market after exercising at the park, come shop with the kids after you pick them up from daycare, or just stop by after work to stroll through and unwind. We are currently looking for local farmers and artisans of specialty goods to become market vendors - applications available at the front desk at Crooked Creek Park. An Evening with Ar thur Phillips and the SC Shakespeare Company Saturday, Sept. 24 7:00 P.M., Saluda Shoals Park Saluda Shoals Park will host critically acclaimed novelist Arthur Phillips as he discusses his controversial “lost” Shakespeare play — The Most Excellent and Tragical Historie of Arthur, King of Britain. Phillips’ splendidly devious (NY Times) novel, The Tragedy Arthur is a play within a novel, within a mystery. This recently unearthed and much debated Shakespeare work will be peformed /read by the South Carolina Shakespeare Company. Please join us for this evening of fraud, forgery and fancy! One night only. “The Tragedy of Arthur is an emotional and elaborately constructed tour de force from bestselling novelist Arthur Phillips, one of the best writers in America” (The Washington Post).
